In March 2020, NZ Girl and Powered by Flossie co-founder, Jenene Crossan, (Ngai Tahu) flew back to NZ from London and a pesky spiky virus hitched on for the ride. Developing Covid a few days after landing, Jenene became NZ's 37th covid case but one of its most visible after going public on instagram. After a particularly brutal case she is still left with ramifications and has become a long covid survivor, spokesperson and case study. She also got horrendously attacked both from online trolls, but also from her own body as covid wreaked havoc on various organs and systems. She took some time to beam into Penny to talk about her endometriosis, her hysterectomy and early surgical menopause, her breast implants' reactions to covid, her fertility journey and how Disney can f**k right off. LONG COVID - Aotearoa only really started to hear about this at the 1pm briefings recently, when Dr Bloomfield acknowledged that 37% of Covid patients will experience some kind of longer term symptoms. Much of the NZ MOH response has been on the race towards 90% vaccination so we can roam free... The thing is, while our risks are greatly minimised with vaccination, "1 jab keeps you out of hospital, 2 jabs keeps you out of ICU...but what's the deal with Long Covid? We'll speak with Jenene Crossan, (and possibly her # 1 supporter Scottie Chapman) the 37th Kiwi to get Covid "the original strain" back in March 2020, and who suffered from Long Covid for more than 18 months. The long term impacts after a constellation of multi-factory symptoms is still unknown, but the group of people suffering from this is growing by the day. Jenene has collaborated with Dr Anna Brooks of The University of Auckland to look at Long Covid and the impact on our immune cells, a unique study that is well positioned in Aotearoa due to the low levels of Covid thus far. There are now over 1000 Kiwis suffering from Long Covid and the prospect of this growing exponentially, particularly in areas where inequity exist, it's critical that we really look under the hood and get a handle on this impact this can have on our communities, our whanau, our economy and health system. We have asked one of the key patient advocates, Jenene, to share about it to educate and make us aware of what's happening and why it's important.

Last night I watched the Sunday programme which concentrated on Covid 19 in Australia and New Zealand. I wondered beforehand whether it was going to be a dramatic scaremongering propaganda piece. It was not by design, but it was by effect. First we saw the tale of two New Zealanders who had been through a Covid infection and the effect it had on them. Jenene Crossan was enlightening. A 42 year old entrepreneur who returned from overseas. She was fit and healthy and surprised by the infection and the force of it. She talked about the debilitating cough and the pain and the exhaustion and the fear of breathlessness. She also talked about how she continues to be affected by the infection. From becoming allergic to dogs, to being continually tired and having a vicious cough that strikes from nowhere. This is the thing about viruses. They’re whole body experience. One of my friends died in his 40s of heart disease caused by damage from a tropical virus he caught in his 20s. Covid will live on long after the pandemic is over Jenene Crossan was at great lengths to say that her Covid infection was not just a cold or flu but something far more violent. That tallies with one of my friends in France who has beaten the Covid. He is late 40s, a skier, an amateur mountaineer, a tramper, a fit man. He described Covid to me as trying to climb Mt Everest - without oxygen. Meet the Kiwi faces of Covid-19 and why they say complacency is not an option. THIS WEEK.Plus why Melbourne is doing it tough. @Jenene @taniapage @MavaEnoka #Sunday pic.twitter.com/pCgcpWhpgw— Sunday (@SundayTVNZ) August 20, 2020Another episode was fly on the wall coverage of a Melbourne Emergency Department dedicated to Covid patients. It was a scene from a nuclear fallout apocalypse with all the PPE’s buzzing around. Doctors who were seeing the effect of the virus were telling the camera that this is not something to be underestimated. But the take away that stuck with me is something we don’t mention often. Covid is so new there is no treatment for it. If you can’t fight it off yourself all we can do is calm you down and stick a hose down your throat to help you breathe. This is why the globe is so concerned. We can treat cancer, we can prevent car crashes, but Covid has no enemy or foe. But the doctor at the centre of the piece gave me hope. With every case they’re learning more and bit by bit they’re learning how to fight this. The same way we learnt to make HIV non fatal. And the final piece was on the total shambles that was the Melbourne isolation regime. It made our problems at the border seem trivial. At the heart of Melbourne’s problem was the private security force. By giving the power for sub contractor’s to hire it gave them a profit motive to hire as cheap as possible resulting in an untrained and ill prepared staff who took outrageous risks and that has been a city’s death sentence. The provision of some public services by the private sector are always vulnerable to profit taking. We need look no further than Serco prisons in this country or the Public Private Partnership disaster that is Transmission Gully, now years late and half a billion over budget. I thought it was an illuminating programme to remind us that complacence and underestimation of Covid is a fatal mistake and that will kill not just your people but your economy.

Nathan had some tradies over across the long weekend and when he offered them chocolate they ate the entire block! The guys talked about giving an inch and taking a mile - Jess’s houseguest used much more than she anticipated, and Lisa’s brother in law literally took a mile when he borrowed her car.On Married at First Sight last night, Cyrell’s brother Ivan wasn’t happy with her getting married on the show, and he confronted her new husband about his apparent ‘sickness’ – he was shut down when he was told it was cancer. That’s one super awkward example of putting your foot in it, just like Jen who accidentally bad mouthed her friends wife in front of him, and Jenene who didn’t realise that a friends partner had more than just a sore leg….And Keith called the guys today. Yes, his name is Keith, and he is 27 years of age. Are there any more young Keith’s? Or for that matter, young Maureen’s? Turns out there are. Unbelievable. As business thinker Cindy Gallop says, there is a lot of money to be made by taking women seriously. But the reason there is that opportunity is that traditionally, particularly in tech and business, women and women’s interests have not been. One person that’s been creating more space and fighting this battle over the last 20 years is local entrepreneur Jenene Crossan. In 2018 it’s easy to take for granted the social web, paid independent female voices, and that Teen Vogue is political. But in 1999. it wasn’t this way. This was the year Jenene founded NZ Girl. It was also just after Google was founded. Jenene was already 4 years into building websites and living online, and saw where things were going with media. NZ Girl went on to be the biggest social magazine in the country and in 2015 was named best blog. It was also a business in the time before there was a clear business model for online media. This led Jenene to found companies to solve advertising online, to found Bloggers Club - one of the first companies around to monetise influencers - and more recently, Flossie. Flossie solves two problems at once. It helps women find curated and recommended salon services and book them efficiently and effortlessly, and put helps salons drive repeat and new custom, especially in quiet times. It was an industry ripe for such a service, that has grown into Australia and the UK, with big things on the horizon. To talk the ups and downs, the life of an entrepreneur and the journey, Jenene joined the podcast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
