Get out your tissues, listeners! (Seriously.) This week, V and Emily split the episode in two parts: first, the very silly attempt to understand how the Forever Knight fandom went to WAR! for the thirteenth time in 2010. Second, a look into the fannish life and ongoing impact of Forever Knight BNF Susan M. Garrett, who seems like she was a completely awesome fangirl, writer, and person. V and Emily both weep like babies in this episode because sometimes, the fans who make history ARE well-behaved, and they rock, and we love to learn about and remember them. This week I had the privilege of being joined by Susan M. Shaw & Grace Ji-Sun Kim to discuss their new book "Surviving God: A New Vision of God Through the Eyes of Sexual Abuse Survivors". It is no secret that Sexual Abuse is a HUGE problem; not just in society as a whole, but within the doors of the Church as well. Grace and Susan both share their own experiences and the experiences of other survivors to help call out the systems and ideologies that are at play that lend themselves to sexual violence and abuse. Our theology is called into question as well as Grace and Susan invite us to look at our understanding of God through the eyes of sexual abuse survivors. I hope this conversation is both challenging and rewarding. Enjoy. Pro bono publico, a Latin phrase meaning “for the public good,” is most often associated with free legal services lawyers provide to people who need help but cannot afford to pay for it. No lawyer I know better reflects that commitment than Boston lawyer Susan M. Finegan, a Partner and Chair of the Pro Bono Committee of the Mintz law firm. In this episode of Higher Callings, I asked Sue about the pro bono work she and other Mintz lawyers perform. We also discussed a number of other topics about pro bono legal services, including why lawyers and other legal professionals choose to engage in pro bono work, how law firms incentivize their lawyers to take on pro bono cases, how working on pro bono cases provides important training for new lawyers, what Massachusetts has done to provide pro bono opportunities for retired lawyers, and how in-house corporate lawyers and government lawyers work with law firms to staff pro bono cases. I began the interview by asking Sue about an extraordinary scene I witnessed during a formal Boston Bar Foundation charity event on a cold Saturday night in January during the earliest days of the Trump presidency, when she and other lawyers were called into action to address a sudden legal crisis. You can find Sue Finegan's law firm bio here: https://www.mintz.com/our-people/susan-m-finegan

There have been many prolific events that have taken place over the years with sexual trauma and domestic violence; even to the point of domestic violence being coined that term. The legalaties of the system have not always been favorable toward a woman that was in the midst of a traumatic event. Over the years, there have been successes and failures in the areas of crimes against women, and the lacking of after care, leaving her feeling lost and sometimes confused about how she should feel and what to do to get back on track. Finding a light after sexual trauma can be very difficult if a woman has to do it alone. Latonia's guest Susan Omilian is a trailblazer in the area of helping women reclaiming their lives after abuse from start to finish and aftercare. Listen in on the conversation as they discuss Susan's long-standing career, the work she has done as an attorney advocating for women, and the hundreds of women she has helped to Thrive as they discuss, "A Legal Perspective!" --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/a-womans-soul-restored/message

Susan M. Cameron served as president and CEO, as well as executive and non-executive chair of the board of directors, of Reynolds American Inc. between 2004-2011 and 2013-2017. When RAI acquired Lorillard, Inc. for about $29 billion in 2015, it was reported to be the largest acquisition undertaken by a female CEO. In the period during which Cameron held leadership roles at RAI, the company's total return to shareholders increased 1,335 percent, and the company's stock price rose 627 percent. Cameron also serves as a non-executive director on the board of Tupperware Brands Corporation. Susan received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Florida and a master's degree in business administration Bellarmine University. A brand marketer at heart, Cameron started her career in the tobacco industry in 1981 when she joined Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. Susan worked in a number of countries around the globe before returning to the U.S. in 1999 and being named CEO of Brown & Williamson in 2001. When Brown & Williamson's U.S. business was merged with RAI's R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 2004, Susan was named CEO of the new parent company, Reynolds American Inc. Since then; RAI has grown from a market capitalization of about $6 billion to its current valuation of more than $60 billion. Susan's management philosophy is simple: in the consumer-goods industry, any company's greatest assets are its brands and its people. Investing in both is the best way to ensure success. An avid advocate for women's leadership, Susan frequently speaks to university and professional groups on leadership development. During her tenure as RAI's CEO, she was recognized multiple times by publications including Forbes magazine, FORTUNE magazine and the Financial Times as one of the most powerful women in business. In 2016, FORTUNE magazine named Cameron as one of its top 50 businesspeople of the year, based both on RAI's performance under her leadership as well as her record of taking “bold, visionary steps.” Susan is very active in community development activities and has served on the boards of two United Way organizations, the YWCA, Wake Forest University, Salem College, Experiment in Self Reliance, the Winston-Salem Alliance, and Old Salem. Since 2011, she has served on the board of trustees of her undergraduate alma mater, the University of Florida.
AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Kevin Lahmers, a veterinary pathologist from Virginia Tech, to discuss a disease recently introduced into the US. Theileria orientalis, and specifically the genotype ikeda, can cause clinical disease in affected cattle that present similarly to anaplasmosis. The majority of infected cattle are asymptomatic, however death can occur in 1-5% of cattle and anemia, fever, abortion and icterus. Lahmers states that often the disease is seasonal and associated with the calving season. One clinical syndrome that is different than anaplasmosis is that any age of animal can be affected with clinical disease. The transmission rate is high and many affected herds have 75-100% of the animals testing positive. The Asian Longhorn Tick is the primary biological vector for Theileria orientalis, however, mechanical transmission can occur through common use needles and biting insects. There is currently no effective treatment other than supportive care for clinically ill animals. The Asian Longhorn Tick can become hyperendemic and reproduces asexually, therefore it is common to find heavy infestations on animals. Tick control, pasture management, and maintaining a good plane of nutrition are important preventive measures that can be implemented. Currently a PCR test is available on blood (purple top tubes) or by submitting the spleen of necropsied animals to differentiate the disease from anaplasmosis. If you suspect the disease in your area, Lahmers is willing to discuss it with you by contacting him at klahmers@vt.edu. Also, a pedestrian footbridge connected Haines with nearby Crescent Park until it was swept away in the '38 Hurricane. A bath house was added in 1940. Finally, in 2002 it became the site of a seasonal farmer's market. Next, a fun activity to do today.. Head out to the Lighthouse Lawn in Stonington for Yoga. In this episode, we hear about Susan's zigzagging path from literature to science and back again. We chat about Susan's novels, Accidentals and Carbon Dreams—which deal with the science and politics of species extinctions and climate change—about incorporating knowledge of sciences like ornithology, wetlands biology, and geochemistry in realist fiction, and about how she got talked into writing Echoes of Life, a non-fiction book about the history of organic geochemistry. You can learn more about Susan's work—including all the birds in Accidentals!—on her website.
