This week we're jumping out of series for Labour Weekend with Aidan Wivell bringing us a message titled: Just Rest. Preaching out of Deuteronomy 5:12-15, this Labour Weekend as we remember the history of the 8-hour working day, we explore the Biblical practice of Sabbath, which thousands of years earlier placed limits on work and protected space for rest. We'll look at Sabbath though the Māori framework of Atua, Tangata, and Whenua, and see how Sabbath is an act of justice which creates space, not just for us, but for others and for God's creation.

Aotearoa's complicated history of land sales is the focus of a new series from the New Zealand Herald. Whenua: Our Land, Our History, is an interactive map showing how Māori land passed into Pākehā ownership and the stories surrounding it. It confronts questions some of us prefer not to ask because they raise uncomfortable issues about Aotearoa's colonial legacy, and how those impacts are still being felt today. On The Front Page today, we get the story of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei with their Trust's deputy chair, Ngarimu Blair, and discuss the decision to make this series with Chief Content Officer for the Herald and NZME, Murray Kirkness. To read more about how these land sales impacted all iwi around Aotearoa, and the stories by NZ Herald journalists, head to nzherald.co.nz.   Whenua is a New Zealand Herald data-led project, supported by NZ On Air, in association with Māori land legal expert Adrienne Paul.  Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. In the heart of Mt Albert, Auckland, is one of the oldest gardens in NZ. The Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Community Garden was first planted by Maori in pre-European times and hasn't been built on since. The vege gardens and food forest have been lovingly cared for over the years and flourished under the ownership of Carrington tech, now Unitec. But they face an uncertain future following the sale of the lands to Housing NZ. Despite assurances, the gardens remain zoned for residential development. Vincent is on a break this week so handed the reigns to writer and sustainability advisor Sarah Heeringa to interview gardens curator Trevor Crosby. This podcast first appeared at The Feed Weekly.

A Wairarapa hapū is overwhelmed by the support for their crowdfunding campaign for about $500,000 to buy back some of their whenua. Ngāti Kahukuraawhitia wants to purchase 182 hectares by the Waiohine river in Wairarapa, to build a papakāinga for their descendants to live on. The Givealittle page has raised over $40,000 already in just a day, but it's a race against time to pull the money together before tenders close Tuesday afternoon. Meriana Johnsen reports.
