Today's guest was another gentleman that I got to meet whilst over at the International at Stoneleigh, Russell Jones was the judge for the apprentice teams and the individual competition and if taking the piss out of somebody was an Olympic sport, I would have to say that he and Danny Bennett would be nose-to-nose for the gold medal. I wonder if this has anything to do with their military training. As you'll hear, Russell was in the army as a farrier, and I don't know if Danny has ever mentioned it before on his podcast, but he too was an army farrier. It was an honour to meet Russell and to spend some time with him. He was serious when he needed to be as the judge, but he was also fun when we would all hang out socially afterward. Connecting with an audience isn't always easy, especially when you can neither see nor hear them. One way to do this is by making the right connections in their thoughts and that is where the magic begins. My guest today is making a welcome return as a friend of the show to help us connect more. In fact, he's going to teach us how we can inspire, influence and energise anyone, anywhere, anytime. Are you ready to learn a new superpower?I first encountered Simon Lancaster watching his TEDx Verona talk on YouTube where I was introduced to the world and art of rhetoric. As someone with a keen interest in influence and persuasion, it was like being given the keys to enter a magical land that I had never known existed before. I find rhetoric just as exciting today as I did then and one of the people I have learned the most from in this subject is my guest on this episode.During the lockdowns, many of us were desperate for connection with our fellow humans and Simon felt that need very acutely too finding new ways to connect, keeping his speechwriting skills sharp and discovering a new platform as well as a new passionate hobby. The show was a live launch for Simon's book Connect which has taken somewhat longer than anticipated to publish as a podcast episode but I think it is a great way to close off 2022 and welcome 2023. Simon's book recommendations in this episode were Sense by Russell Jones and How Confidence Works by Ian Robertson. I added both to my own personal reading list.Make sure you learn Simon's 6 powerful speechmaking tools near the end of the episode and join us again in the new year when we will continue our series on the 7 Deadly Sins of Podcasting that you need to avoid and overcome to be a successful guest.Enjoying the content? Anhedonic Headphones Podcast 2 - Electric Boogaloo

In the first episode of SEASON SEVEN (whoa!), or the 37th episode overall, Kevin welcomes Duluth-based singer and songwriter Sarah Krueger to the program—you might know her as Lanue, the name she released a full length LP under in 2021, and the name she released a brand new EP under in mid-April. She and Kevin chop it up about her new batch of tunes, real hip-hop, the ability to separate the artist and the art they make, and the "scene" in Duluth; Sarah also brings an eclectic mix of 10 songs to the show and discusses what parts of her life they represent.  For more information about the "award winning" music criticism site, Anhedonic Headphones, click here! Welcome to a dive into the Sharing things archive and a selection of 5 episodes where the objects are not just starting points, but deeply woven through the lives of our guests. What do you hold close? In our first episode of this collection we revisit the conversation between Lori Watson and Russell Jones and talk about fringe coping strategies, pretty dogs, sci-fi nights, creative juices, video games and fish funerals. This episode is hosted by Amalie Sortland, who joined us un the summer of 2019 and stayed until March 2020. She graduated in politics as part of the class of Covid in 2020. Lori Watson is the first Doctor of Artistic Research in Scottish Music, and an authority on contemporary traditional music practice in Scotland. Drawing on her strong roots in the rich creative tradition of the Scottish Borders, she has become a leading interpreter of Scottish folk music and Scots song and her skills as a performer, composer, researcher and educator are widely recognised. Russell Jones is an Edinburgh-based writer and editor. He is the UK's Pet Poet Laureate, has published five collections of poetry and is deputy editor of 'Shoreline of Infinity', a science fiction magazine. Russell  is also the editor of 'Where Rockets Burn Through: Contemporary Science Fiction Poems from the UK' (Penned in the Margins), co-editor of 'Umbrellas of Edinburgh: Poetry and Prose Inspired by Scotland's Capital City' (Freight Books) and 'Multiverse: an international anthology of science fiction poetry' (Shoreline of Infinity). Russell writes novels, short stories for children, and has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Edinburgh.  Each episode of Sharing things is a conversation between two members of our university community. It could be a student, a member of staff or a graduate, the only thing they have in common at the beginning is Edinburgh. We start with an object. A special, treasured or significant item that we have asked each guest to bring to the conversation. What happens next is sometimes funny, sometimes moving and always unexpected.Find out more at www.ed.ac.uk/sharing-things-podcast This episode of Sharing things was recorded before the Covid thing. Russell Jones is a multi-sensory marketing expert that works with well-known brands like Heineken and Aston Martin to improve their products using the science of the senses. Remember when Cadbury changed the shape of their chocolate bar and everyone said it tasted different. The ingredients were exactly the same, but the shape altered the way our senses interacted and behaved. When you go into a supermarket, the speed of the music or the type of music will alter what you buy, regardless of if you notice it. ven the shapes and colours of the utensils you use to eat or drink with can change the taste of what you're eating and drinking. Russell is going to give you a load of examples and ways you can use your senses to improve just about every part of your life. I hope you enjoy the episode. Iwan spent 25 years as a TV and radio producer and director for the BBC before joining Regent's faculty as the Eugene and Jan Peterson Associate Professor of Theology and the Arts. Iwan is a passionate advocate for the importance of the arts in theological conversations, arguing that every generation and culture has to wrestle with the question of how the arts fit into the life of the church in that particular time and place. Is “Christian art” a real thing? Will artists see the fruit of their labour? Is Regent's Integrative Project in Arts & Theology better a thesis? Iwan has the answers. Content Warning: Suicide It's all pseudonymous folderol this week on Pod Sematary! Both movies are Stephen King adaptations about writers who are so tormented by their demons that... well, it's Stephen King, ya know? Don't get us wrong -- we love Stephen King, but is he just using us as his therapy at this point? First up is 1993's The Dark Half starring Timothy Hutton and Timothy Hutton. Thad Beaumont buries his alter ego to avoid controversy, but George Stark just doesn't want to stay buried. Ask Mama if she believes it, but it would really make no difference to us either way. Then it's on to 2004's Secret Window starring Johnny Depp and... Timothy Hutton again! Mort Rainey never used a pseudonym himself, but that won't stop John Shooter from taking credit for one of his stories -- and demanding that Mort fix the ending. The ending of this movie, on the other hand, doesn't do much to impress. Chris will argue that the movie is underrated, but by how much? But stick around for some spoiler-talk about Castle Rock's 6th and 7th episodes, "Filter" and "The Queen". There are also, as you’ll hear, poems about Edinburgh’s monuments and landmarks.
