The pantheon of elite cornerbacks has a high barrier to entry. Outside of quarterback, there may be no harder position to play in football than cornerback. The position requires a rare combination of size, speed, fluid hips, elite reaction time and overall toughness to play it at the highest level. As the NFL's crop of wide receivers continues to improve, it's never been more important to have shutdown cornerbacks to defend against them. Modern safeties are versatile, and teams are deploying them in different parts of the field with frequency. The latest trend in the NFL is utilizing a safety with size as a "big nickel," putting them in the slot to disrupt closer to the line of scrimmage. This year's safety group features at least two dozen quality players worth consideration but not many truly elite players.

The Detroit Lions Podcast

The Detroit Lions have a deep, flexible safety room that still needs defined roles. Injury concerns to both regular starters complicate the safety spot, and that will make for a very intriguing training camp in Allen Park. Is Kerby Joseph the turnover engine this defense needs? Yes, when Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph is on the field, the defense gains its best ballhawk. As Jeff Risdon noted, Joseph is "exceptionally good at creating opportunities for the defense to turn defense into offense." Risdon explicitly wants him healthy for 17 games because nobody else has provided that level of takeaways. Joseph had ups and downs last season, but his ability to flip possessions remains the singular swing factor in the secondary's ceiling and the overall NFL playoff push. Is Chuck Clark the answer while roles settle? Detroit Lions safety Chuck Clark looked like a starter and a tone-setter in minicamp. He played primarily in Joseph's role, handled every assignment, and, as Jeff Risdon put it, "impressed the hell out of me" as a leader and communicator. Clark can play over the top or in the box, and at 32 years old he still moved and directed traffic like an alpha. The only open question, per Risdon, is whether his best days are behind him, but his spring performance says he can anchor the room as jobs crystallize in camp. Where do Thomas Harper, Christian Izien, Avante Maddox and Dan Jackson fit? They are the versatile chess pieces who fill the gaps while starters settle. Detroit Lions defensive back Thomas Harper plays everywhere, with prior work in the slot, at free safety and at strong safety, and he aligned closer to the line of scrimmage in camp. Detroit Lions defensive back Christian Izien, an undrafted Rutgers product who became Tampa Bay's "positionless wonder," has started in the slot, over the top, in the box and even outside, and he profiles more as a slot safety. He missed the early part of last season, then resumed his value as a super sub. Detroit Lions defensive back Avonte Maddox is a veteran presence who can contribute in a sub role. Detroit Lions safety Dan Jackson, a Georgia draft pick who missed his entire rookie year, is a strong safety and core special teams type, but he remains an unknown until he stacks camp reps. How will the scheme changes unlock this group? Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil and the staff want to be less predictable on the back end, and the room's versatility enables that. Chuck Clark can blitz, and Dan Jackson showed last summer he can blitz from the slot and from depth. This camp is about someone, whether it be Clark, Izien or Harper, seizing a defined role so the coaches, including Kelvin Sheppard, can deploy fewer moving parts and more consistent combinations. If health cooperates and one or two players lock down jobs, the Lions field a very good safety unit, with depth that is far better than a year ago. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #kerbyjoseph #chuckclark #thomasharper #christianizien #avontemaddox #danjackson #detroitlionssafeties #jimo'neil #kelvinsheppard #nfltrainingcamp #slotsafety #boxsafety #nfldefense #takeaways Learn more about your ad choices. On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, the Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner and Christopher Carter discuss DK Metcalf's upside within the Steelers' offensive in 2026. How much will the star WR benefit from the return of Aaron Rodgers at QB and the arrival of offensively focused head coach Mike McCarthy? Will defenses be able to focus on him less than they did in 2025 because of Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard joining the receivers room? And what are reasonable totals to expect from him alongside other receiving threats including Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Roman Wilson, Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders new DC Patrick Graham's plans for the safety group. How will he mimic the choices coach Mike Tomlin and DC Teryl Austin made last season? And how could he differ in how he uses names like Jalen Ramsey, Jaquan Brisker, DeShon Elliott and Darnell Savage? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Hour 2 of The Drive featured a deep dive into Illinois football's evolving 3-3-5 defensive scheme, with a special focus on the safety positions and the versatile "Chief" role. The guys discussed how the position functions as a hybrid defender, blending responsibilities of a nickelback, linebacker, and safety while creating flexibility for defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck's aggressive approach. They also examined which current Illini players are best suited for the role and how the position could impact Illinois' defensive success in 2026. The show also previewed Team USA's critical FIFA World Cup matchup against Australia. Kurtis and Evan broke down the Americans' strong start to the tournament, key players to watch, and what a victory would mean for the United States' chances of advancing out of Group D. They also looked at Australia's strengths and potential challenges the USMNT could face heading into the highly anticipated match. Plus, the results are in from this week's Tuesday Draft as listeners crowned the winner of "Best Smells of All Time." From fresh-cut grass and bacon to movie theater popcorn and a new car interior, the guys reviewed the fan voting and debated which scents truly deserve championship status. Learn how modern NFL defenses use hybrid "Star" personnel and simulated fire zones to counter condensed formations and heavy personnel packages. Master the exact early-down blitz thresholds and schematic adjustments required to neutralize play-action efficiency without compromising your two-high safety shell.—In this episode:The Heavy Personnel Counter-Revolution: Modern offenses are moving toward condensed, heavy-personnel packages like 12- and 13-personnel packages to distort defensive spacing and pull perimeter defenders into primary run fits. The Play-Action “Tax”: Playing single-high safety coverage to handle a heavier box count hands an extra 2.0 yards per play to highly efficient play-action schemes.Early-Down Blitz Efficiency Limits: Keeping early-down run blitz rates within a 20%-22% sweet spot limits offensive success, while crossing the 25% blitz threshold triggers diminishing returns and more explosive plays.Simulated Fire Zones as a “Fix”: Defenses are increasingly using simulated pressure to create a heavy look, drop edge players into flats using an “action-and-coverage” mechanism, and preserve deep coverage. The Roster Requirement Shift: To match modern offenses, teams must carry three starting-caliber CBs and three starting-caliber Safeties, transforming the hybrid “Star” slot defender into a premium, first-round position.—Timestamps:00:00 - Solved 11 Personnel Run Defense02:16 - Heavy Personnel Surge07:33 - The 3x3 Roster Mandate11:20 - Condensed Formations Strain14:30 - Play-Action Single-High Tax20:14 - Traditional Slots & 5-Man Fronts25:33 - Hybrid Star Alley Fitters37:32 - The 25% Blitz Threshold41:00 - Simulated Fire Zone Spacing—» Join Felix and Cody each Wednesday as we dive deep into the game we love!MatchQuarters is a reader-supported publication. A draft that flips expectations Uncertainty rules the 2026 NFL draft. Only one quarterback looks like a first-round lock. The wide receivers, once viewed as light, surged into the star group. Running back thins after Jeremiah Love. The board pushes teams toward less celebrated positions. That creates value and hard choices. It also exposes which front offices are organized and which are guessing. Tight ends, safeties and OL carry the board This Detroit Lions Podcast episode zeroes in on where the talent sits. Tight end is a headline. Kenyan Sadiq grades as a top-tier prospect and projects to go very early. Safety is strong and deeper than usual. Interior offensive line offers starter traits into Day Two. Offensive tackle holds up well, too. The sweet spot stretches through Day Two and into Day Three for these groups. Teams willing to invest in non-premium positions can clean up. That mirrors how the Detroit Lions built recent drafts with results. The conversation tracked how recent cycles elevated quarterback, running back and wide receiver. This year tilts differently. Safeties and tight ends stand out. Interior linemen anchor the depth. It is not a bad class. It is a unique class that demands precision and a clear plan. Linebacker calculus and Detroit lessons Linebacker is still devalued on draft night, but the names have juice. Arvel Reed and Niese Styles headline. CJ Allen is climbing. Jacob Rodriguez could even sneak in, depending on need. Teams hesitate unless the traits scream All-Pro. The Lions have shown it can work. They invested in Jack Campbell. They added Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta. They hit on Jabir Gibbs. Non-premium positions produced premium impact. This class lines up with that approach, especially on Day Two and Day Three. Trade talk and board ripple The Dexter Lawrence trade drew measured praise. New York did well. Cincinnati's angle also tracks. They never truly replaced DJ Reed and missed that presence. Moves like that shift boards. Safety runs can start earlier. Offensive line plans adjust. Big-name safeties can still slide outside the top 10 or even top 20, but the overall depth gives teams options. For Detroit, the value bands match where the roster-building model has thrived. Tight ends, safeties and offensive linemen anchor this draft. That is where the 2026 NFL board feels strongest and where smart clubs can separate. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #2026nfldraft #tampabaybuccaneers #kenyonsaddiq #drewallar #minnesotavikings #draftinpittsburgh Learn more about your ad choices.
