The 10th Battalion, which came to be known as the Fighting 10th, was created from the prairies. Men from the Calgary Rifles and the Winnipeg Light Infantry were all a part of the 10th, along with men from the rest of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Over the course of the three and a half years that the unit saw action in Europe, they would receive more than 20 battle honours, and participated in every major Canadian battle during the entire war. They set the record for the most decorations earned by a Canadian unit in a single battle, during the Battle of Hill 70. They were at the 2nd Battle of Ypres, the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Whenever I think of the CEF, it is the 10th Battalion that comes to mind, because they seemed to be everywhere that the CEF went into action. This series will be covering the 10th Battalion in depth. But before we do that, we need to look a bit more about the overall picture of recruiting men, outfitting them, and training them.
