Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s.  In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident.  His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father.  But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift.   You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. This week's Talkhouse Podcast is actually taken from a conversation that served as the online launch party for the second issue of our print ‘zine, The Talkhouse Reader, which was lovingly put together by Talkhouse music editor Annie Fell. The issue, which you can order at store.talkhouse.com explores the intersection of food and music, so naturally this episode does as well. Our guests are Jason Stewart and Rostam. Stewart is, along with Chris Black, the host of the popular podcast How Long Gone, in which the two discuss pop culture, fashion, and whatever else happens to come to mind, often with great guests—recent ones include Jenny Lewis, Waxahatchee, and Isaac Brock—but frequently just the two of them gabbing like better-read versions of your hippest friends. They're part of the fabulous Talkhouse Podcast Network, and you can catch the How Long Gone guys live this June if you're lucky enough to live in one of the cities they'll be visiting. Tour dates and their deep catalog of episodes can be found on their site. Today's other guest is Rostam, who's best known as a co-founder of Vampire Weekend and co-architect of that band's sound. Rostam left Vampire Weekend a few years ago to pursue solo and production work, and he's kept plenty busy. He made a great record with Hamilton Leithauser of the Walkmen as well as a fully solo record called Changephobia—you may have heard him on the Talkhouse Podcast talking about it with Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast. He's released a few standalone songs recently as well, and as always he's a thoughtful conversationalist with something interesting to say. Since this conversation is focused largely on food, you can expect to hear about Rostam's egg habits, a killer salmon recipe, and some talk about Rostam's mom, who's a well known chef of Persian food who once went toe-to-toe with Martha Stewart. Enjoy, and please check out the Talkhouse Reader issue two at store.talkhouse.com. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jason Stewart and Rostam for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was put together by Annie Fell and edited by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

(First aired on WUTC 2/10/24)The Mason Jennings History:Mason Jennings was born on the Island of Hawaii, but at an early age his family moved to the opposite of tropical, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At 13, he started playing guitar and writing songs. Mason later dropped out of high school and decided to move to Minneapolis to pursue his musical career. Jennings made this decision after a friend of his father's sent him cassette tapes of the Replacements, Jayhawks, and Prince. After non-stop listening he felt like it would be a great home for his music.Jennings produced his self-titled debut album in 1997 on a Tascam analog four-track in the living room of a rented home, playing all instruments himself. In October 1998, he began a weekly gig at Minneapolis' 400 Bar. The two-week gig ended up lasting four months. Birds Flying Away, Mason's second record, revealed his penchant for singing first-person narratives of imaginary rustic characters. In 2002, Jennings released a studio album, Century Spring, and a "fans only" collection of acoustic songs, Simple Life. Mason released all three albums (and re-released his earlier albums) on his own record label, Architect Records. In June of 2005, Jennings signed with Glacial Pace, a subsidiary of Sony's Epic Records headed by Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock. Minnesota's Star Tribune credited Brock with convincing Mason to sign after he opened for several Modest Mouse shows in 2004. Jennings had long avoided the major labels, citing desires to maintain creative control and dodge big-label politics. In early 2008, Mason signed with Jack Johnson's record label, Brushfire Records. Jennings released In the Ever in May 2008. Blood of Man soon followed and received a coveted 4-Star review in Rolling Stone, who also cited, “What makes Mason Jennings one of the best singer songwriters you've never heard of is his ragged intimate voice and his simple ruminations on God, war, hope and gratitude.”With many more albums and projects in between, we fast forward to the release of Wild Dark Metal in 2016. He got divorced and after taking some time off to focus on painting, to recover from depression and to heal from agoraphobia, he began touring again. He remarried in 2018 and released an album of love songs inspired by his new relationship, Songs From When We Met, available now.Mason Jennings Tracklist:ButterflyChemical CarKeepin' It RealNothingSomething About Your LoveUnited States Global EmpireThe Light, Part IIDrinking as Religion Darkness Between the FirefliesCursive PrayersOther Artists Tracklist:Bob Dylan – “Tangled Up in Blue”Mötley Crue – “Dr. Feelgood”Mötley Crue – “Kickstart My Heart”The Beatles – “Get Back”Hank Williams – “I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive”Gordon Lightfoot – “Only Love Would Know” Hosted on Acast. Isaac Brock, the visionary frontman of Modest Mouse, embarked on a musical journey that would forever alter the indie rock landscape when he stumbled upon a hidden gem in the vibrant music scene of the early 2000s. While navigating the musical terrain of his hometown, Seattle, he chanced upon a captivating performance by a relatively unknown band called Wolf Parade. Enchanted by their raw energy, poetic lyricism, and genre-blurring sound, Brock saw in Wolf Parade a kindred spirit. His discovery of this Canadian indie rock outfit proved to be serendipitous, as he immediately recognized their potential and signed them to his label, Glacial Pace Recordings. In doing so, Brock not only introduced the world to Wolf Parade's distinctive sonic universe but also cemented his reputation as a curator of groundbreaking talent, forever changing the course of indie rock history. 0:00 Wolf Parade Apologies to the Queen Mary Review 14:55 You are a Runner and I am My Father's Son 17:55 Modern World 19:30 Grounds for Divorce 21:05 We Built Another World 22:15 Fancy Claps 25:40 Same Ghost Every Night 27:35 Shine a Light 29:35 Dear Songs and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts 30:55 I'll Believe in Anything 32:25 It's a Curse 34:40 Dinner Bells 35:40 This Heart's on Fire 37:50 Grimm's Scratch 39:10 Dude's Scratch #indiemusic #isaacbrock #wolfparade

Today I'm talking with the band Califone's founding member Tim Rutili.  Califone began 25 years ago as a solo project after the dissolution of his previous group Red Red Meat in Chicago.  You may have heard his collaboration with Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, Ugly Casanova, or his ambient rock group Loftus.  Tim has continued to do sporadic collaborative efforts over the years, but Califone has been a constant having released 15 albums as well as a bunch of singles and EPs.  Their experimental take on Americana, musique concrete and indie rock is unlike that of any other group around.  On May 19th, 2023 they are releasing a new album called Villagers on Jealous Butcher Records.  I spoke with Tim about live performances, the new material, the group's previous album Echo Mine which was a score to a dance piece, their experiments with live improvised silent film scoring, the virtue of acting like a baby, writing and directing the film All My Friends are Funeral Singers, and several of his other projects over the years.  Tim Rutili spoke with me earlier this year from his home in Los Angeles.Low Profile is supported by you on Patreon and also receives in-kind support from these independent Olympia businesses:  Schwart'z Deli, San Francisco Street Bakery, Old School Pizzeria, Rainy Day Records and Scherler Easy Premium Shitty American Lager from Three Magnets Brewing Company.Instagram: @lowpropodcastFacebook Community: Low Profile Listener HubPatreon:  patreon.com/lowprofile

Mason Jennings has the most interesting songwriting process I've come across. Since he was around 13 years old, the Minneapolis songwriter has had songs just come to him while randomly playing guitar and singing. He gets in touch with his subconscious and discovers his songs there very naturally. He also never writes the songs down. That's right, he commits each song to memory and only writes them down for liner notes. Born in Honolulu and raised in Pittsburgh, he chose Minneapolis to settle into his music career. There, he found lots of success and managed to avoid the ever-tempting major label record contracts, which were being offered as high as $1 million. Wanting to remain in control of his creativity, he opted to stay independent until he signed with Glacial Pace, a subsidiary of Sony's Epic Records headed by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. He released Boneclouds in 2006 and gained much acclaim. An album with Jack Johnson's label and an appearance on the soundtrack to Todd Haynes Bob Dylan film I'm Not There, solidified his presence in the folk mainstream.Fast forward to his latest album (his 14th studio record), Real Heart, co-produced by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, is an ode to the acoustic guitar and a love letter to songwriting. Lately, Mason's been working on himself through therapy and self-reflection. In the last few years, he's been working on conquering and controlling depression, agoraphobia and living a sober life. He's also gotten married again to Josie Jennings and the couple just recently welcomed their son Western in March 2022. A lot of these themes appear on Real Heart. We dig into those as well as his painting, the lake he lives on and Painted Shield, his synth-based rock and roll band with Stone Gossard and Matt Matt Chamberlain. Mason's a very special person and I'm grateful for this conversation!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Released in 1997 on Up Records, the band met with producer, Calvin Johnson, at Moon Studios where for seventeen consecutive days they recorded, before holding a second, smaller session with Phil Elk in Seattle. During these recordings, the band refined the sonic landscape it debuted just one year prior with their first studio album—This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About. And while that release was a breakthrough with the public eye, the band truly garnered a following with this album, as it would come to define modern indie rock. And the record, while not explicitly autobiographical, provides insight into the throughs and dwelling of Isaac Brock as he muses over malls, Montana, and modern religion.

Daniel Kwan (host of the Curiosity in Focus podcast) joins this episode of GDAH to continue our conversation about archaeology in pop culture. In this, Kwan and I cover some examples of archaeology in TV, games (board and video), and music. Kwan, being a pop culture aficionado, blasts through a list of TV shows portraying archaeology in various ways. It is the portrayal of archaeology and archaeologists that says something important about attitudes toward the discipline. From Star Trek's even-handed application of cultural relativism in the Star Fleet's "prime directive", to Hank Hill's indignant frustration with an archaeologist who ruins his yard in King of the Hill, views on archaeology's relevance as a discipline and archaeologists' credibility as stewards of cultural resources run wide. Shifting to games, we give a nod to the pioneers of Archaeogaming - researchers examining the way archaeology is presented in games, and the ways archaeological theory and method can be applied to built virtual environments, the code itself, and the physical material of game packaging. As for archaeology in board games, Kwan relates examples of archaeological theory and method being applied to tabletop role playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Coriolis. We take two approaches to discussing archaeology in music - one is the role music plays in our experience in the field; the other covers references to archaeology or the products of its research in song. I mention my secret love of reggae and reggaeton, and how I actually used to hate it until years of working in the Caribbean/Central American nation of Belize got me hooked. There’s a song by Damian Marley (son of Bob Marley) & Nas called “Patience” that references ancient culture, oral traditional knowledge, archaeologists, Indiana Jones, and makes a call against the hangovers of colonialism - a recurring theme in reggae and Rastafarianism. At one point, Nas says “discovering the world before this world, buried in time, uncovered in rhyme”. The music video kinda rules too. Turning to one of my favorite bands, I can’t believe it’s already been 2 years since this album came out - “Luminiferous” by High on Fire. I was floored when I read this interview with guitarist/singer, Matt Pike, who full-on believes aliens have been among humans since Ancient Sumer. Stoner and Doom metal are subgenres that are rife with references to ancient cultures and pseudoarchaeological claims to the occult. Some of my favorite bands in this style, like The Sword or Electric Wizard, often make (cheesy) references to either real or imaginary ancient material culture to relate themes of power, violence, and life experience in current real-world settings. There are also passing references in a couple Modest Mouse songs to archaeology. I can’t find the link to the interview but their lead singer, Isaac Brock, apparently studied anthropology in school before graduating with an Associates Degree. On this week’s podcast, we’re talking the return of indie-rockers Modest Mouse. For Strangers To Ourselves, their first album in eight years, Isaac Brock and crew mashed together a little of the old and a whole lot of the new to make an album that’s decidedly Modest Mouse, but is it any good? Kevin and Paul discuss the album, the band’s legacy and more, but not before diving deep in to the clusterf#@# of the Blurred lines decision handed down late last week. Hit with a $7.4 million fine for copyright infringement, Robin Thicke and Pharell Williams are on the front lines of a fight that’s about to heat up, one that threatens to cripple the way all art, not just music, is made and sold in the very near future.PLUS! We’ve got a dark and sophisticated new track from DC collective Waltz Brigade you to put in your ears off of their recent EP Slow Mountain! Tune in and turn it up, cuz we’re running lean and mean on Episode 108 of ChunkyGlasses: The Podcast! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week on Snacky Tunes, Greg and Darin welcome Amanda Freitag, one of New York’s most celebrated chefs, and the band Kal Marks, who came all the way from Boston to play some rock. Amanda is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, and a well known TV personality and chef for battling Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America on the Food Network. Getting her start under the guidance of Jean-Georges Vongerichten at Vong New York, she eventually teamed up with legendary restaurateur Godfrey Polistina (Carmine’s, Ouest, Virgil’s BBQ) to start the popular upper west side restaurant Cesca Enoteca & Trattoria. Most recently, Amanda was the executive chef at Gusto in the West Village, where she received both critical and popular acclaim. Lastly, Freitag found a new opportunity at The Harrsion in Tribeca. Since Freitag’s arrival, The Harrison has received numerous accolades from local and national media, including a two-star review from The New York Times, as well as features in Time Out New York, New York Magazine and Forbes Life. Boston’s Kal Marks (originally the solo project of Carl Shane and now a trio) are set to release their first full length album as this lineup, and first recorded in a real studio, Life Is Murder, on September 17 via Exploding In Sound/Sophomore Lounge/Midnight Werewolf. They come from a scene of other young raging rock bands (like Pile and Speedy Ortiz), and like those bands, Kal Marks get loud. But they’re also part of a long lineage of indie rock bands with weird-voiced singers that spans from bands like Modest Mouse or Wolf Parade to more recent things like Alt-J. Ever wondered what Titus Andronicus might have sounded like if Patrick Stickles was more into Isaac Brock and less into Conor Oberst? Kal Marks could be your answer. “When I got to The Harrison, I got a call asking if I wanted to be on Iron Chef. I had a great experience that led to Chopped.” [24:30] — Amanda Freitag on Snacky Tunes

A rock & roll band with an enduring fondness for pure pop and a wicked, sly sense of humor, TAB the Band defy easy categorization. They may love the Beatles and Cheap Trick as much as T-Rex and the Rolling Stones, but TAB aren't classic rockers; they're a vibrant, contemporary band that blends the vigor of punk, the might of arena rock and the melodicism of power-pop, earning the admiration of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, alt-rock stalwarts who requested TAB The Band as their opening act. TAB The Band's full range can be heard on Zoo Noises (released Jan. 26, 2010), a freewheeling, all-encompassing carnival ride, fueled by such intoxicating singles as the percussive “She Said No (I Love You)” and the breakneck hooks of “Bought and Sold.” TAB The Band may be the best example of how great things can come from no expectations. Brothers Adrian and Tony Perry, sons of Aerosmith's Joe Perry, began the group almost as a lark. “I grew up in LA,” explains Adrian, “and whenever I came to visit Tony, we'd always record stuff for fun.” Adrian had a few serious bands while he was in high school and college, continuing to occasionally play with Tony. “Around Christmas break in 2006 we said, let's mess around and make some songs,” remembers Adrian. "Tony invited his friend Ben Tileston to have real drum tracks. We ended up writing nine songs in a week -- it was very organic. Before we knew it, we had a show booked.”
