The final episode of Season Four is with a young man who has written himself firmly into the record books. Brian Foster, the 16 year old who in 2024 became the first man (second person) to swim the North Channel Double and also becoming then youngest ever soloist in the process. His double took him a remarkable 24 hours and 50 minutes... He also swam the English Channel and Catalina in preparation for this remarkable achievement. We chat all things Sandy Cove, swimming proper sets in the sea all year round and generally what makes this young man so special.Season 4 is in collaboration with Ocean Lube, the ocean-friendly anti-chafing skin cream that saves your skin and protects our oceans.
Episode ten of An Open Water Swimmer's Podcast, is with Paul de Waard. Originally from the Netherlands, he now resides in a corner of Ireland where very cold open water swimming is the norm for a large community of swimmers. Sandy Cove has become synonymous with a hardcore group of Irish swimmers, who train throughout the year - swimming lap after lap (one lap is roughly a mile). A former competitive swimmer, he has completed the gnarly 34.5km North Channel - battling yet more cold and the infamous Lionsmane Jellyfish along the way. But perhaps most inspiring is what led him to this corner of the globe after heroically trying to help a person in distress… and recovering from the ensuing gunshot wound. Season four is in collaboration with Ocean Lube the ocean-friendly anti-chafing skin cream that saves your skin and protects our oceans.
The Long's Braya is a small, endangered plant, native to a few areas along the Northern Peninsula. Some students from Canon Richards Memorial Academy in Flower's Cove helped researchers recently to protect the plant species. The researchers were from a non-profit group called Intervale. Together, they removed Long's Braya plants from Sandy Cove beach and planted them in a safer location nearby. The CBC's Sanuda Ranawake spoke with some students and their teacher.

In our twenty-sixth episode of Unsolved Canadian Mysteries, Kenton de Jong and Dylan Fairman discuss Jerome, the legless, mysterious man who appeared on the shores of Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia in 1863. Eight-year-old George Albright was the first to discover Jerome, and once realizing what this lump on the beach was, he immediately went for help. Once brought to the Albright residence, the family tried to figure out where he was from, and who he was, only to learn he did not speak English, French, Italian, Spanish or Latin. For several years Jerome was taken care for by the people of Digby, Nova Scotia, but eventually, they sent him to Megeghan, Nova Scotia, a primarily Catholic community because they determined Jerome was Catholic too. It was here that Jerome would be put on display to an audience, a roadside attraction, and became famous for being a legless wonder. But who was Jerome? Where did he come from? And where did his legs go? Listen to the podcast and find out!

A castaway on the shores of one of the most isolated parts of Nova Scotia. A man with legs amputated, just small stumps left behind. The bandages were still fresh. Little in the way of clothing, and unable to speak. When asked for his name, he provided something that sounded like Jerome, but nothing more. Unable to speak English, he also couldn't understand any other language. How did this man end up on the shores of Nova Scotia at Sandy Cove? Where did he come from? It is a mystery that many have been unable to solve to this day. This week, we look at the story of Jerome of Sandy Cove, or as he is also known, Jerome of Baie Sainte-Marie. In Fierce Appetites: Loving, Losing and Living to Excess in my Present and in the Writings of the Past (Sandy Cove, 2022), Dr. Elizabeth Boyle weaves together the past and the present together, creating a beautiful memoir and reflection. To quote the book blurb, “Not only does Elizabeth Boyle write dazzling accounts of ancient stories, familiar and obscure, from Ireland and further afield, but she uses her historical learning to grapple with the raw and urgent questions she faces, questions that have bedeviled people in every age. She writes on grief, addiction, family breakdown, the complexities of motherhood, love and sex, memory, class, education, travel (and staying put) with unflinching honesty, deep compassion, and occasional dark humour.” This book is for academics and non-academics alike and for those interested in musings on the Middle Ages, a multifaceted life, and the events of 2020. Fierce Appetites was published by Sandycove, an imprint of Penguin Books, in 2022. Dr. Elizabeth Boyle is a lecturer in the Department of Early Irish at Maynooth University and former Head of the Department. She is the author of numerous works, including the History and Salvation in Medieval Ireland (Routledge, 2021) which was featured on a previous New Books in Irish Studies podcast. Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, 1863 As far back as recorded history can take us, we see the inhabitants of the land presently called Nova Scotia maintaining a strong connection to the waters that surround them. Forestry, Fishing, Tourism, and recreation. The Atlantic’s waves crash against all aspects of our lives. it’s not a surprise that the Atlantic Ocean also plays a role in many of Nova Scotia's most enduring mysteries. In this this episode, our story involves mysterious strangers arriving to Nova Scotia’s shores by way of the Atlantic Ocean, but in this case they didn't crash land in a UFO, and they seem to bury any treasure. All they did was desert a speechless, legless man on a beach in the Digby area of Nova Scotia. Who he was, why his legs were cut off, and how exactly he came to arrive on the beach... are all questions that have gone unanswered in the 150+ years since his sudden arrival. Tonight, in this episode of Nighttime, we will be joined by author Fraser Mooney Jr. Our topic is Jerome, the mystery man of Sandy Cove. This past weekend, January 20 and 21, 2018, was the anniversary of the first Women's March which was held last year to coincide with inauguration day in the United States. Marches were held all over North America, including many here in Canada, large and small. Sandy Cove, a tiny village on the Fundy Shore in Nova Scotia had 32 marchers. And though that sounds small, it's half the village population. Big places like Vancouver and Toronto didn't get that high a percentage of the population out. Toronto police estimated 6,000 people at the Women's March in that city. And police estimates are usually on the low side. Safe to say there were a few tens of thousands of people marching in Canada. For those of you who weren't able to make it to a Women's March in your community, we're bringing you a snapshot in sound from the March from London Ontario, collected by Meg Borthwick, a London resident, activist and also rabble's babble moderator.
