In 1878, 18-year-old Esther Cox of Amherst, Nova Scotia, became the center of a chilling mystery when she claimed to be tormented by a violent poltergeist. Witnesses reported terrifying phenomena, including loud banging sounds, moving furniture, spontaneous fires, and even physical attacks on Esther herself. ABC#067, part 1 Walter Hubbell was a Philadelphia-born actor who would probably be forgotten today were it not for the Great Amherst Mystery, a book he wrote about Esther Cox, a young woman seemingly possessed by evil spirits which started after she suffered a failed sexual assault at gunpoint by a young man she trusted. Esther's nightmarish experiences affected not only her, but the people with whom she lived: she was even temporarily jailed as an arsonist when a neighbor's barn burned to the ground. Walter Hubbell learned about Esther when his traveling troop ventured into the Maritimes. He thought that he could debunk the stories. Instead, he became a convert and wrote about it. Years later, much of what he wrote was debunked by a psychic skeptic. The whole story is mesmerizing.

The most notorious account of poltergeist activity in Canada is said to have started in 1878. Esther Cox was a young woman who began hearing unexplainable noises, such as knocking and scratching sounds, in her bedroom at night. Soon These events escalated into objects moving, physical attacks, and fires starting on their own. The paranormal events were reported on extensively, but they're still debated to this day. The second episode in a 3-part Haunted Talks special event! We continue our exploration of Canada's most documented and frightening Poltergeist cases. For this episode, we travel to the Maritimes and explore two stories in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Although nearly 50 years and 200 km separate them, these stories share too many details to ignore. They have all of the hallmarks of the poltergeist stories that we've already come to know: the strange noises and aggressive behaviours. In Amherst, a young woman named Esther Cox became the target of suspicion after her family's home was tormented by an entity that would start fires, leave writings on the walls, and directly communicate with witnesses by using knocks or a disembodied voice. In Caledonia Mills, a family was besieged by a relentless series of fires. It seemed anything could catch fire at any moment: wallpaper, wet towels, and the grass in the yard. Nothing was safe from the flames. The family was so worried about the spread of fire that they all took turns keeping watch, worried that there could be an arsonist lurking in their midst. Join us for the final episode of Canadian Poltergeists on Friday, October 21st, 2022!
We are in full-on spooky season mode now. We've left the awful horror movies behind us, and we are here with two extra creepy paranormal tales. O'Dell kicks things off with a very famous haunting that plagued a young Nova Scotia woman in the late 1800s. After an attempted assault, Esther Cox began to experience unexplained phenomena late at night. It started as knocking on the walls, and soon escalated into things being thrown around the room, writing on the ceiling and spontaneous fires. The strange thing about this is the haunting wasn't relegated to Esther's home, and cropped up in different ways in different locations. Erin follows up with the true story of Anneliese Michel whose story inspired the film, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". Anneliese believed she was possessed, and would receive as many as 60 exorcisms in two months. Was it simply a neurological disorder, or was she really possessed by several demons? We close things out with a WTF story about a man buried alive at a festival, a few "Have you ever" questions to cleanse the palette and some spooky season inspired shower thoughts.Chapters:00:00 - Intro00:51 - Festivals and Shout-outs03:51 - O'Dell's Case: The Great Amherst Mystery25:04 - Erin's Case: The Possession of Anneliese Michel41:06 - WTF of the Week: Festival No No49:40 - Palette Cleanser: Have You Ever?54:56 - Shower ThoughtsSupport us by becoming a memberSend us a tipLeave us a voice messageDo you have a missing loved one and you'd like us to share their story? It's a dark and spooky night here, so what better topic to cover than a ghost story? Esther Cox seemed to be cursed, but was her story all made up for book sales?
The lives of a family in Nova Scotia are upended after a scary event involving 18-year-old Esther Cox. “The manifestations described in this story commenced one year ago. No person has yet been able to ascertain their cause. Scientific men from all parts of Canada and the United States have investigated them in vain. Some people think that electricity is the principal agent; others, mesmerism; whilst others again, are sure they are produced by the devil. Of the three supposed causes, the latter is certainly the most plausible theory, for some of the manifestations are remarkably devilish in their appearance and effect.” The opening lines of an account that describes an event that perplexed, excited and angered the citizens of the small, Canadian town of Amherst in the 19th Century. It probably comes as no surprise that the man who wrote them had a professional flair for dramatics, though the events were hardly short of drama to begin with. A young girl, haunted by demons, whose story book-ended a series of supernormal events with an assault and a conviction for arson. SOURCES Hubbell, Walter (1879) The Great Amherst Mystery.

The Great Amherst Mystery was a notorious case of reported poltergeist activity in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada between 1878 and 1879. It was the subject of an investigation by Walter Hubbell, an actor with an interest in psychic phenomena, who kept what he claimed was a diary of events in the house, later expanded into a popular book. The Amherst Mystery centred on Esther Cox, who lived in a house with her married sister Olive Teed, Olive's husband Daniel and their two young children. A brother and sister of Esther and Olive also lived in the house, as did Daniel's brother John Teed. According to Hubbell's account, events began at the end of August 1878, after Esther Cox, then aged 18, was subjected to an attempted sexual assault by a male friend. This left her in great distress, and shortly after this the physical phenomena began. There were knockings, bangings and rustlings in the night, and Esther herself began to suffer seizures in which her body visibly swelled and she was feverish and chilled by turns. Then objects in the house took flight. The frightened family called in a doctor. During his visit, bedclothes moved, scratching noises were heard and the words "Esther Cox, you are mine to kill" appeared on the wall by the head of Esther's bed. The following day the doctor administered sedatives to Esther to calm her and help her sleep, whereupon more noises and flying objects manifested themselves. Attempts to communicate with the "spirit" resulted in tapped responses to questions. The phenomena continued for some months, and became well known locally. Visitors to the cottage, including clergymen, heard banging and knocking and witnessed moving objects, often when Esther herself was under close observation. In December Esther fell ill with diphtheria. No phenomena were observed during the two weeks she spent in bed, nor during the time she spent recuperating afterwards at the home of a married sister in Sackville, New Brunswick. However, when she returned to Amherst the mysterious events began again, this time involving the outbreak of fires in various places in the house. Esther herself now claimed to see the "ghost", which threatened to burn the house down unless she left.
Amherst, Nova Scotia was home to a haunting that has still not been completely explained to this day. Esther Cox began experiencing unexplained phenomena in late August 1878 after being assaulted by a local man named Bob MacNeil. Bob fled the village after the attack however the manifestations of a poltergeist haunted Esther Cox for more than a year. For much of this time, Esther lived with family and friends who also witnessed the hauntings. Many credible people including local business owners, a physician, and clergy claim to have also witnessed the events. The experiences of Esther Cox became known as the “The Great Amherst Mystery."Thank you for listening!Buy us a coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/tntcpodBuy some TNTC merchandise: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/true-north-true-crime?ref_id=24376Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tntcpod/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/tntcpod See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Amanda and Sarah look at some questionable, but no less disturbing hauntings. Sarah takes on Esther Cox and Great Amherst Mystery, a Canadian heavy-hitter about a woman and her family terrorized by a poltergeist after a traumatizing experience. Amanda heads to Colorado for the (supposed) strange happenings at the Henry Treat Rogers Mansion and its creepy neighborhood park. Other subjects covered include deconstructing the word "chunk," discovering pop songs through covers, and destroying a garbage disposal. The Great Amherst Mystery is one of Canada's most famous hauntings, and has been cited as being one of the most credible examples of explainable paranormal phenomena in history. The events saw 18-year old Esther Cox and her family be tortured by the presence of spirits for nearly a year, before ending almost as soon as it all began. Actor Walter Hubbell famously wrote about the case, gathering a number of eyewitnesses for testimony, and having them sign an affidavit for the release of his book The Great Amherst Mystery: A True Narrative of the Supernatural. In this episode, we talk about Amherst, Nova Scotia, Esther Cox, and the events that took place from September 1878 until the following summer. Episode 66 - This week we go back in time to 1878 in Amherst Nova Scotia. We learn about one of Canada’s most documented and as yet unexplained paranormal events. Esther Cox, an ordinary 18-year-old in the town was at the center of these horrific psychic attacks, some people believe to have been poltergeists. It began with the feeling of something under the bed, odd noises and Esther suffering a weird illness. The events went on for months, eventually led to items flying around the home and mysterious fires being set seemingly out of nowhere. In the second half of the show we speak to paranormal investigator, author, teacher and media personality, Morgan Knudsen of entityseeker.ca. She gives us some insight into the case of Esther Cox as well as some others including those included in Blue Ant Media’s Paranormal 911 which can be seen here in Canada on Sunday nights at 8:00 pm Eastern. With no physical evidence, the case files collect dust, and remains unsolved to this day. In 1879, Esther Cox finds herself in the middle of a dark paranormal situation. When things go from innocent noises, to physical injuries, Esther and her family realize there is no escaping the dark forces surrounding her. The curious case became so publicized, it earned the name The Great Amherst Mystery.
