fWotD Episode 3294: Golden Bough (Aeneid) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles.The featured article for Tuesday, 12 May 2026, is Golden Bough (Aeneid).The Golden Bough is a fantastical object described in the Aeneid, an epic poem by the Roman poet Virgil composed between 29 and 19 BCE narrating the adventures of the Trojan hero Aeneas after the Trojan War. The episode of the Golden Bough is found in its sixth book and is part of Aeneas's journey into the Underworld. The bough itself acts as proof of Aeneas's divine favour, and allows him to pass into the Underworld. He is tasked to find it in an expansive forest, which he accomplishes with the aid of his mother, the goddess Venus, and to remove it from its host tree. Although Aeneas has been told that it would come easily, if his journey is ordained by fate, Virgil describes the bough as briefly hesitating before he takes it.Virgil's portrayal of the bough has no direct literary antecedents, though it draws on several precedents from literature, folklore and philosophy. Scholars have connected it with, among others, the Golden Fleece in the story of the Argonauts; symbolic objects associated with deities such as Hermes, Dionysus and Circe; and the branches carried by prospective initiates into the Eleusinian Mysteries, a Greek religious rite centred on a symbolic journey into the Underworld. Virgil associates it with both death and immortality, partly by way of symbolic associations in Graeco-Roman culture between gold and the gods. It also recalls ideas put forth by the Roman philosopher Lucretius as to the nature of the soul. The episode of the Golden Bough was parodied by authors including Virgil's contemporary Ovid, and drawn upon by later Roman poets including Lucan and Valerius Flaccus.Early interpretations of the Golden Bough tended to give it an allegorical function, particularly via Pythagorean and Neoplatonist philosophy, which viewed it as symbolic of the choice between virtue and vice. In the sixteenth century, it became a heraldic symbol of the Florentine House of Medici. Early modern receptions of the bough, including those of François Rabelais and Jonathan Swift, were often parodic or obscene. Tonight's guest, Eric, has had some experiences in his life that were much more frightening than what most people have experienced. Eric used to live in a haunted house and one of the most frightening experiences he's had happened when he was in the shower one night. When he had that experience, he was standing in the shower when all of a sudden, he saw what he thinks was a demon come into the bathroom with him. When he saw that happen, it frightened him so much, he jumped out of the shower, threw his pants on, and ran out of the house. Of course, that experience really shook him up, but it still isn't the most frightening experience he's had. That title belongs to the time he walked right up to 3 Dogmen, before he realized what they were. He came to regret doing that. Tonight's guest, Phil Kotval, is the host of the Dogman Teepee Hunting Podcast. His interest in Dogmen stemmed from a frightening encounter he had when he was 8 years old with what appeared to be a real-life Werewolf, not a Dogman. The night his encounter happened, he was staying at his great Auntie Sissy's house, in the suburbs of Ipswich, in Suffolk England. After he was dropped off at her house, Auntie Sissy made it clear to him that he could play in her garden but he had to come inside before it got dark because if he didn't, Old Stinker would get him. He didn't know who or what Old Stinker was but Auntie Sissy's warning took him aback. He went out and played in the garden, nevertheless. The county has a lot of places that people just don't go and a history of disappearances a mile long. Consequently, there has been a lot of speculation about the cause of those disappearances. Tonight's guest, Athena, lives on a very old farm, that's backed by ancient woodlands, in North Wales, in the U.K. Due to how old her farm is, there are some good things that come along with that and some bad. One of the bad things she and her family members have had to deal with is a presence of paranormal entities that have made all of their lives more interesting than what they would prefer. Another thing she's had to learn to deal with is the presence of Dogmen that make their presence known too often for Athena's liking. When tonight's guest, April, was younger, she found what she thought was an injured, jet-black dog in the woods, one day. Being the kind soul she was and is, she decided to take him home with her, so she could nurse him back to good health. Due to his jet-black coat, she named him Shadow. As time went by, she came to realize that there was something special about Shadow. He had qualities normal dogs don't have, like piercing, amber-colored eyes that seemed as if they could look right through you. Also, normal dogs don't raise up onto their back legs and walk from the living room window to the front door, so they can look out. Tonight's guest, Marshall, is an experienced Ohio Dogman investigator who was featured on Episode 626, most recently. Originally, he came on Episode 445, to talk about Dogman encounters he'd had in his main research area. Back when he came on Episode 445 to do that, he viewed the Dogmen in his research to be relatively docile. Tonight's guest, Marshall, is an experienced Ohio Dogman investigator who was featured on Episode 445, two years ago. On that show, Marshall told us about the relatively positive experiences he'd had with Dogmen in a research area he'd been doing investigations in for 30 years. On that show, he described the Dogmen in his main research area as being almost docile. Unfortunately, that's all changed. Not long ago, Marshall noticed an abrupt change in the demeanor of the Dogmen in that area. Now, he describes them as being dangerous. Tonight's guest, Rodney, describes himself as being a farm boy who grew up on a farm, in Ohio. He'd hunted from the time he was knee-high to a grasshopper all the way up to 1983. After spending so much time in the woods, he thought he knew about everything out there in them. That confidence came crashing down, one night, in August of 1983, however. On December 24th, around midnight, after Bruce Brown and I recorded last week's show (Episode 623), he drove to a property in Fentress County, Tennessee to investigate a Dogman sighting a farmer there had, recently. While he was looking around the farmer's property, nothing of note happened. When he was walking back to his car, however, that all changed. Crystal is the friend Dan told us about who experienced having a Dogman coming into her home too, when she was a little girl. Tonight's guest, Dan Schmidt, was born and raised in Southern Minnesota. When Dan was growing up there, he had what could very easily be the most frightening Dogman encounter that's ever been shared on the show. You see, when he was 9-years-old, Dan and his cousin spent the night at his grandma and grandpa's farm, during winter break. The encounter happened the first night Dan and his cousin were there. When it happened, Dan was laying on the couch, in the living room and his cousin was laying on a make-shift bed his grandma had made, on the living room floor. Some time between 1 and 2 AM, Dan was awoken by a noise. Dan realized that it was the sound of the latch on the door to the back porch, of the house, being worked. Then, he heard that door being opened. Next, he heard slow, heavy footsteps walking across the back porch toward the back door of the house. When he heard those footsteps coming toward the back door, he looked at the back door. To his dismay, he then saw its doorknob turn and then the back door slowly open. What happened next was much more than most people would ever be able to handle. He watched a Werewolf walk into the house. It's difficult enough to come to terms with a Dogman encounter you have when you're away from home but things could have been worse. At least you didn't have the encounter at your home.
