So happy to talk to Kwanza Osajyefo, the co-creator of the graphic novel Black which asks the simple question: "What if the world had superheroes but they were only black".     A LOT MORE about Kwanza and the rest of the team behind Black (stolen from the press release from the good people at Superfan Productions)   Timed to Black History Month comes a Kickstarter campaign to fund the new independent superhero science fiction original graphic novel BLACK, from Kwanza Johnson p/k/a Kwanza Osajyefo, the former DC Comics Digital Editor who helped launched the company’s Zuda imprint, and Tim Smith III (Iron Man, The Amazing Spiderman). BLACK, illustrated by Inkpot-Award winning artist Jamal Igle (Molly Danger, Supergirl), asks the question, “In a world that already fears and hates them – what if only Black people had superpowers?” BLACK follows the story of a young man, Kareem Jenkins, who, having miraculously survived being shot by police, learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Kareem must decide whether it's safer to keep history’s secret, or if the truth will set him free. Rounding out BLACK’s creative team are DC Comics illustrator Khary Randolph, who will contribute covers and additional artwork, and editor Sarah Litt, formerly of Vertigo and DC Comics.   “With BLACK, we’re looking to tell a great story, but we’re also purposefully challenging the pop culture status quo, which is dominated by a White male aesthetic,” says BLACK co-creator Kwanza Osajyefo. “BLACK tackles the very real and palpable issue of race, which is at the forefront in America and around the world. We are trying to confront the issue of race head-on by creating a world in which only Black people are superheroes -- and the BLACK superhero trope isn’t subtly cast under a label of mutant, inhuman, or meta-whatever. It is also both thrilling and liberating to create the superheroes we’ve always wanted to see -- and, frankly, be -- outside of the entrenched publishing system.”   “Sometimes a project comes along and you realize you need to be a part of it. As soon as I saw what Kwanza and Tim had in mind, I knew I had to be involved. I've known all of the people involved for years, know how professional they are,” says Jamal Igle. “I'm all about unique twists and BLACK certainly fits the bill. It's going to be a fun ride.”   “BLACK is a story that has come at an important moment in comic book culture. This is a book that brings a contemporary message of identity into a world where anything can happen. A world where creative writing and imaginative visuals can show an alternative to what you would normally see in mainstream books today,” says Tim Smith III.   If funded through the Kickstarter campaign launching February 1st, BLACK will be available digitally to backers as DRM-free PDFs in monthly installments, starting in mid 2016. The limited edition print run of the six-chapter BLACK graphic novel is due out late in 2016.   As additional perks, BLACK Kickstarter backers can also get: original BLACK character art; original BLACK cover art; a cameo of your likeness drawn into BLACK; a commission sketch of your choice from Tim Smith III or Jamal Igle; an original interior page from BLACK by Jamal Igle; an illustrated card set of the 6 BLACK main characters: Kareem Jenkins, Juncture, Theodore Mann, Agent Adams, Agent Washington, and O; your name in the credits page; an online portfolio review of your art, story, or comic by members of the BLACK creative team; a set of three buttons, three stickers, or 1 die cut skin featuring original BLACK art; and signed copies of BLACK.   The BLACK Kickstarter campaign is live as of February 1st and runs through February 29th. For updates follow BLACK at Twitter, Facebook, and at http://www.blacksuperpowers.com/. ABOUT THE BLACK CREATIVE TEAM   Kwanza Osajyefo -- Creator and writer of BLACK, Kwanza Osajyefo is a former digital editor at Marvel and DC Comics – best known for launching DC’s Zuda imprint, which published series like the award-winning Bayou, High Moon, Night Owls, Superton, Celadore, Black Cherry Bombshells, Bottle of Awesome, and I Rule the Night.   Tim Smith 3 -- Co-creator and designer of BLACK, Tim Smith 3 (A.K.A TS3), has been working in the comic industry for over 15 years. Be sure to shout out to Koren on the twitter @KorenShadmi and tell him how much you loved hearing him on Crowwdfinders (and I suppose, by extension, how much you love Crowdfinders, thanks!!!) More on Koren and The Abaddon (from the good folks who do his publicity) From award-winning illustrator Koren Shadmi comes THE ABADDON, a strikingly cinematic graphic novel loosely based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s play NO EXIT, due out November 12th online and in bookstores, from Z2 Comics. Originally created as a webcomic, THE ABADDON tells the story of a young man, Ter, who finds himself trapped in an otherworldly apartment with a group of dysfunctional, ill-matched roommates. Ter is aghast to discover that his new, grotesque reality is not governed by the laws of nature, and that his roommates are missing critical chunks of their memories and identities -- as is he. Creator Koren Shadmi’s work was first published in his native Israel when he was a teenager. His haunting, alluring characters pull readers straight into Ter’s David Lynch-esque reality. On his captivating and, at times, horrifying quest for clarity and control, Ter remembers that he was once a soldier, and is forced to face the aftermath of his time on the frontlines -- a journey that echoes Shadmi’s own three year-stint in the Israeli Army. Shadmi is already a well-known creator in Israel and Europe, and this fall’s publication of THE ABADDON promises to substantially elevate his U.S. profile. Through THE ABADDON, U.S. readers and critics alike will discover Shadmi’s intense combination of dark humor and drama; will feel a rare, visceral connection to characters that embody all of our deepest, darkest thoughts. Koren Shadmi is an Israeli born, Brooklyn based graphic novelist and illustrator. His books have been published internationally and include: IN THE FLESH, THE ABADDON, and most recently: MIKE’s PLACE: A TRUE STORY OF LOVE, BLUES AND TERROR IN TEL AVIV. Koren’s illustration and comics have appeared in publications such as: The Wall Street Journal, Wired, BusinessWeek, the Village Voice, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Mother Jones, Playboy, and many others. His illustration work has won several awards at the Society of Illustrators.

Title character Allen is cowardly, directionless, and less physically menacing than a daffodil. He’s also the only son of the mightiest hero ever to plunge his sword hilt-deep into the dark heart of evil… the mighty HELLCOCK! It was mys distinct pleasure ot talk to Erik Bitmanis about his new book Hard Wyred.   Show Notes (Courtesy of Erik) Hard Wyred is a new scifi/comedy comic series that has many of its visuals rooted in classic cyberpunk fiction. Melding together laugh out loud humour, over-the-top action, and some heart felt moments, Hard Wyred looks to play its way into reader’s hearts around the globe. The story takes place in the near future where, through the wonders of the internet, we have now developed a highly advanced, futuristic online world. In this world people can upload their consciousness to an online profile and live out their wildest dreams and fantasies in this amazing new world without ever having to go back to reality. The hero of the story, Sam Wyerznowski, is still very much stuck in the past. This fast paced, technological world has rushed past him and he purposely lags behind refusing to keep up. Once a member of special peacekeeping force known as “Sweepers”, Sam and the Sweepers have since gone to ruin. All of them lacking the conviction to enforce what they were originally uploaded to do, and instead focus on personal wealth, gain, and power. Sam’s job has since diminished to a corporate mercenary for hire, which oddly brings him into this online world on a constant basis. (Weird for someone who hates technology so much) Having spent the last 10 months on a leave of absence (although many refer to it as a forced retirement) due to a crisis caused by Sam’s own hands, Sam is brought back into this online world to investigate an attack on one of his previous employer’s research facilities. What he stumbles into is a problem much larger than he could have ever imagined.
