In this episode of The Corner of Story and Game, writer, educator, and cross-media storyteller David Gallaher joins us to explore one of the most nuanced challenges in narrative design: how to create emotionally grounded characters that hold up, regardless of the medium.David draws from his work on comics like High Moon and The Only Living Boy, as well as his narrative leadership on games like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, to outline what he calls the character's “fire, scar, and lie.” This powerful framework offers writers and designers a durable, emotional blueprint for characters that need to live across formats from the page to the controller to the streaming screen. We talk about:

Restaurateur approved to open dispensary Beacon restaurateur Kamel Jamal has won the city's second license to sell recreational marijuana, whose sales are increasing as more retailers open. Jamal, who owns the Beacon Bread Company and Ziatun, was one of 101 applicants approved by the state's Cannabis Control Board on Thursday (April 11) to grow, process and distribute marijuana, and to sell buds and cannabis products at retail locations. He applied as 463 Station Inc. a reference to the former police station he owns at 463 Main St. Last fall, he hosted a state-approved "showcase" there, a program that gave farmers and processors places to sell buds and edibles while awaiting the opening of more dispensaries. Jamal declined to discuss his plans, saying he wants to "focus on our buildout and process." In September, when asked about his application for a license, he said it was essential to have legalized dispensaries selling products from state-approved growers. "If money can be counterfeited, they can also counterfeit cannabis packaging," he said. The Cannabis Control Board awarded Beacon's first cannabis license in February to Aaron Sanders and Skyla Schreter, who own LotusWorks at 261 Main St. Their microbusiness permit allows the couple to grow cannabis, process the trimmings into distillates and rosins, and sell buds, extracts and edibles. LotusWorks plans to plant its first crop in the spring of 2025. In the meantime, the couple said it will source buds, rosins and distillates, as well as joints and edibles such as gummies, from other farms and processors. They will launch the business at The Yard in Beacon on April 20, an annual, unofficial holiday in cannabis culture. The event, from 2 to 9 p.m., will include complimentary joints, artwork, live music and yoga. Grant McCabe, who owns The Leaf, a Main Street shop that sells cannabidiol and hemp products, has also applied for a license. Another company, Pleasant View Harvest in Brewster, has applied for a microbusiness license to sell products from 137 Main St. in Cold Spring. Overall, the Cannabis Control Board on Thursday approved licenses for 35 dispensaries, 25 growers, 22 microbusinesses, 11 distributors and eight processors. High Moon LLC, a company based in Carmel, was among the recipients of a microbusiness license. That typically allows an applicant to grow, process and sell cannabis products at retail, but High Moon's license does not include a retail component. The board also approved a provisional retail dispensary license for Serenity Greens LLC, based in Newburgh. Sales from the state's 103 operating retail dispensaries have totaled $102 million since Jan. 1, said John Kagla, director of policy for the Office of Cannabis Management. Weekly sales exceeded $9 million for the first time in March and are on pace to exceed $10 million this month, he said. Total sales should exceed last year's $160 million by June.

The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" are bringing back a formula they haven't had since summer 2018, and they're looking at old failed TV pilots to analyze and wonder what could have been. This episode features two sci-fi pilots, both pushing two episodes in length, and each with sci-fi/fantasy genre bonafides attached, George r. R. Martin's 993 "Doorways" and Bryan Fuller's 2014 "High Moon." One feels like "Sliders" and the other feels like little else. Available on Apple and Spotify Check us out at Patreon.com/dirtysonsofpitches Episode 283 includes: -R.I.P. Alex Trebeck and Sean Connery. -Johnny Depp removed from "Fantastic Beasts 3." -Nate says if you're a fan of "The Craft" you should skip the reboot/sequel, "The Craft: Legacy." -Nate and Ben finally watch "The New Mutants," the movie that's been delayed since 2017, and they wish they hadn't. -TV Pilots -- "Doorways" (1993) and "High Moon" (2014) -"Doorways" is like "Sliders" but written for the dumbest common denominator.  -"High Moon" has goofy characters, a mystery on the moon, and geo-political machinations, plus a giant robot dinosaur and magic Indian mystic warriors.

As for games, we talk about Dishonored, Open world fatigue and Snowrunner. To cap off the show, George watched a random Amazon Prime movie called High Moon. It’s bad. See you next Wednesday!

Dreams, dreaming, and dreamy music is the order of the day. Everything is transforming and reality is realer than ever, and I find myself closing my eyes and dreaming of dinner at my favorite restaurant, a quick browse at the record store, and a stop at the Creamy Whip on the way home. EPISODE #83 of Random Old Records Podcast might not include any Moby Grape this time around, but it's still filled with music dedicated to good dreams and things that make you happy. This trip around the land of nod includes a touch of the psychedelic, plenty of insistent drum beats, sawing strings, soaring synths, a little mysticism, a little drama, and vocal harmonies out the wazoo. You'll hear new and old jams from Once And Future Band, Honeybus, Riki, Yumi Zouma, Wax Idols, The Crabs, John Foxx, Cold Beat, and so much more. Chad Michael Collins’ career and work ethic can be defined in two words: action packed. Chad is most recognized for his starring role as ‘Gunnery Sgt. Branden Beckett’ in Sony’s guerilla warfare film franchise “Sniper.” The series is set to film it’s fifth installment this Fall 2019. Additionally, Chad will star as one of the lead characters, ‘Alex,’ in Activision’s newest installment of their hugely popular military first-person-shooter franchise “Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare.” Releasing October 25th, the highly anticipated video game will be available to play on all major consoles and PC. Fans and gamers alike have been waiting for the next installment of Activision’s best-selling series for eight years. The new game will feature familiar characters from the original trilogy that sold over 100-million combined units worldwide, but gamers will also be able to play as Chad’s character ‘Alex’ throughout the entire single-player storyline. In order to create Activision’s most realistic and cinematic video game to date, Chad was filmed as ‘Alex’ in a full face-motion-performance capture and then voiced the character. He also trained with former Navy Seals to prepare for the high-resolution fighting scenes and mission segues featured within the game. Outside of the two major military-based franchises, Chad may also look familiar from his many successful sci-fi and thriller TV spots over the years. Recently, Chad has held recurring sci-fi roles on both Hulu’s series “Freakish” (alongside Liza Koshy) and BYU TV’s series “Extinct.” He has additionally made appearances in popular TV shows including: “Once Upon A Time” (playing Frankenstein’s Monster/Gerhart), “Two Broke Girls,” “MacGyver,” “CSI: Miami,” “CSI: New York,” “NCIS,” “90210,” “Blue Bloods,” “Castle,” “Bones” and more. His film credits include the action-horror-western “High Moon” (alongside Sean Patrick Flanery), as well as playing ‘Dr. Sloane’ in AMC Shudder Network's “Creepshow” (tapping ‘The Walking Dead’ EP Greg Nicotero). While born and raised in upstate NY, Chad currently resides in LA. Outside of filming, Chad is a self-proclaimed weekend warrior. He loves to stay in shape by playing on his league basketball team and boxing. He is an avid reader of comic books, the fantasy genre, and loves to get lost in with Bernard Cornwell’s collection of historical fiction. Chad also enjoys getting his game on with World of Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons, retro 8-and-16-bit throwbacks, and Magic: The Gathering. #Celebrity #Discussion #Interview Make sure to subscribe to AfterBuzz! - http://youtube.com/afterbuzztv --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

As we mentioned last time, horror news will now come regularly on our Twitter feed and Facebook page instead of in the podcast. We’ll just be discussing movies and shorts, and we may creep into spoiler territory. So if you really want to go into these movies blind, beware of what we might say. Intro Welcome to Kevin and Brian’s Horror Bulletin podcast, recorded live in Bluehouse Studio. We’re changing things up a little with this, our 23rd episode. Horror news will now come regularly on our Twitter feed and Facebook page instead of in the podcast. To compensate, we’re going to expand our discussion of the movies a little more to the point that there will be spoilers. And we’re adding a new movie category. In addition to a Universal movies classic, contemporary classic, and a very new horror movie, we’ll be discussing an international horror movie. Since we’re in the United States, we’re defining international as any other country in the world. And we’ll also pick a short film to watch and discuss. That’s a grand total of FIVE reviews each week. So, this week we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “The Raven” from 1935, the contemporary classic “The Caller” from 2011, discussion of the short film, “Count to 10”, the very new horror movie “What The Waters Left Behind” from 2017, and our international feature “The Wailing” from 2016. Now actually, “What The Waters Left Behind” is an international film too, but we’ll get it straight with our next episode. And there will be spoilers for all these films in our full discussion. If you haven’t seen them, and you want to go in blind, now’s your chance to back out because here. We. Go! Ignoring the warnings, and after a brief tour, they get stranded in the abandoned village. Contrary to what they thought, they begin to realize that they are really not alone. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aoj1IRUZGOI] Welcome to Kevin and Brian’s Horror Bulletin podcast recorded live from the vampire’s crypt, where each week, we cover the latest horror news, shorts, a classic Universal horror, and two creature-feature reviews. This week, after the news, we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “The Old Dark House” from 1932, the contemporary classic “Contracted” from 2013, discussion of the short film, “The Bells”, and the sequel horror film, “Contracted: Phase II” from 2015. Turn up the volume and lean in close. Here we go... News Features Want to see a silent version of Frankenstein from 1910? How about Grave of the Vampire from 1974? Maybe some old Flash Gordon serial episodes if you aren’t in the mood for horror? Archive.org has hundreds of obscure, old, weird, and interesting horror and science fiction shorts and full-length movies available to view, absolutely free of charge, in public domain. You may not necessarily find anything award-winning, but you are sure to find something entertaining. Check it out from the link in our show notes. https://archive.org/details/SciFiHorror?&sort=titleSorter&page=3 Our favorite Evil Dead fighting hero is still going strong by hosting a reboot of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, premiering on the Travel Channel June 9th of this year. One-hundred years ago in October 1919, Robert Ripley started his stories of the fantastic from real-world strangeness. Now ten all-new, one-hour episodes will showcase more amazing and real stories. Check out the site for more details. https://www.travelchannel.com/shows/ripleys-believe-it-or-not/articles/believe-it-or-not---ripley-s--comes-to-travel-channel-hosted-by- A gunslinger from the Old West comes back from the grave to stop a gang of werewolves in the present day. If that sounds like something you’d like, you’re in luck. High Moon, the western horror movie, is coming. Written and directed by Josh Ridgway, the movie follows a mysterious gunslinger named Colt (played by Chad Michael Collins) with a mission to kill every living werewolf (or “howler”) after a gang of lycans killed his wife. All that happened centuries ago, in the mid-1800s, but things take a major twist when Colt and the werewolves come back from the grave to create chaos in a small town. There’s a trailer to give you a meaty taste now. High Moon will be released on VOD/Digital on May 14 and it’s already available for preorder on Amazon and iTunes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N2YQyA2etY The DC Comics monstrous hero Swamp Thing is coming to DC Universe on May 31st, and it sounds like this take on the tale leans toward horror. EW reports that the show is produced by James Wan, and the promo has the same vibe as many of his beloved horror movies: Lots of quick cuts and frantic screaming as people try to make sense of the supernatural. Check out the article with more details, and see the trailer for yourself that’s just been released. It looks like it’s going to be a good one. https://ew.com/tv/2019/04/24/swamp-thing-trailer/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?timecontinue=1&v=mhtqTUZKzfM The only thing better than Bruce Campbell hosting Ripley’s Believe It Or Not might be the legendary horror movie icon Robert Englund hosting a show called “Shadows of History”, also to be on the Travel Channel. With the help of historians and scholars, Englund takes frightening, creepy, and unsettling news stories from long ago and brings them back to life. “How can you make fascinating and petrifying stories even more scary? Add the genius of Robert Englund,” said Jane Latman, general manager, Travel Channel. “As if tales of flying monsters, zombie cannibals and ghost ships were not enough, we are cranking up the volume for maximum impact. And our fans are going to go nuts for this legendary actor.” Is real life scarier than horror? Watch with us when the six-episode series makes its premier sometime later this year. Universal Studios Classic: “The Old Dark House” (1932) Seeking shelter from a storm, five travelers are in for a bizarre and terrifying night when they stumble upon the Femm family estate. Amazon Link Contemporary Classic: “Contracted” (2013) After being drugged and raped at a party, a young woman contracts what she thinks is an STD; but, it's actually something much worse. Well folks, my guest this week was supposed to be writer David Gallaher.  We had a fantastic chat about his comic, High Moon, a supernatural western starring a werewolf.  Unfortunately, when I went to edit the interview, half of the audio was crazy corrupted. This is really unfortunate, because David is a great guy and we had a super fun chat about his book.  The first volume of High Moon is called Bullet Holes and Bite Marks and it debuts on October 17th.  It features amazing artwork by Steve Ellis, who draws monsters like no other.  High Moon is a trilogy and the second volume is set for release in May 2018.   So, what am I to do without a guest this week?  Well, I did attend New York Comic Con last week and I did a few interviews from the show floor.  I was planning on dropping these as smaller bonus episodes throughout the next couple weeks, but instead, I’m putting them all in here.  There are three total.   First is Dave Scheidt and Scoot McMahon, the creators of a new all ages horror comic called Wrapped Up from Lion Forge Comics.  The first issue came out this week and it’s really fun.  It follows a mummy named Milo as he gets into all kinds of spooky misadventures.  If you want a peek at the comic, there will be a special free issue available for Halloween ComicFest at the end of the month at participating comic shops. The second interview is with writers Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer.  Their book, Calla Cthulhu is a coming-of-age adventure story currently available from Dark Horse Comics. The third and final interview is with Jamie Madrox and Monoxide, otherwise known as Twiztid.  They were on hand as they’re starring in a new one-shot comic called Haunted High-Ons from Source Point Press.  The book is written by Dirk Manning and illustrated by Marianna Pescosta and Alessandro De Fornasari.  It debuted at the show and is currently available at the Twiztid Shop and the Source Point Press site. Earlier this week, news came down that Syfy will air a new television adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. Given Syfy's track record since abandoning "The Sci Fi Channel" as its brand, we thought we'd speculate on whether this is actually a good idea or not. How do you take what's essentially a think piece and make watchable television fare? How do you present the more "hippie culture" and philosophical aspects of the story? How do you get away with all the nudity and sex? Expectations, speculations, and more as we measure what could be a fantastic outing in television compared to others they've produced: DUNE, ASCENSION, CHILDHOOD'S END, HIGH MOON...

In a world that already hates and fears them – what if only Black people had superpowers? After miraculously surviving being gunned down by police, a young man learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Now he must decide whether it’s safer to keep it a secret or if the truth will set him free. This Monday we have two of the individuals behind the comic series Black on Graphic Policy Radio. Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3 will join us to talk about the series published by Black Mask Studios and which saw the second issue recently released after selling out the 22,000 copy print run of the first. Creator and author of Black, Kwanza Osajyefo was a digital editor at both Marvel and DC Comics – best known for launching the latter's Zuda imprint, which published series like the award-winning Bayou, High Moon, Night Owls, as well as Superton, Celadore, Black Cherry Bombshells, Bottle of Awesome, and I Rule the Night.  Co-creator and designer of Black, Tim Smith 3 (A.K.A. TS3), has been working in the comic industry for over 15 years. He created and self-published Red After the Party, and has worked on hit titles for publishers such as Marvel, Archie, and DC, just to name a few! We want to hear your questions! Tweet them to us @graphicpolicy and listen in live this Monday.

So happy to talk to Kwanza Osajyefo, the co-creator of the graphic novel Black which asks the simple question: "What if the world had superheroes but they were only black".     A LOT MORE about Kwanza and the rest of the team behind Black (stolen from the press release from the good people at Superfan Productions)   Timed to Black History Month comes a Kickstarter campaign to fund the new independent superhero science fiction original graphic novel BLACK, from Kwanza Johnson p/k/a Kwanza Osajyefo, the former DC Comics Digital Editor who helped launched the company’s Zuda imprint, and Tim Smith III (Iron Man, The Amazing Spiderman). BLACK, illustrated by Inkpot-Award winning artist Jamal Igle (Molly Danger, Supergirl), asks the question, “In a world that already fears and hates them – what if only Black people had superpowers?” BLACK follows the story of a young man, Kareem Jenkins, who, having miraculously survived being shot by police, learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Kareem must decide whether it's safer to keep history’s secret, or if the truth will set him free. Rounding out BLACK’s creative team are DC Comics illustrator Khary Randolph, who will contribute covers and additional artwork, and editor Sarah Litt, formerly of Vertigo and DC Comics.   “With BLACK, we’re looking to tell a great story, but we’re also purposefully challenging the pop culture status quo, which is dominated by a White male aesthetic,” says BLACK co-creator Kwanza Osajyefo. “BLACK tackles the very real and palpable issue of race, which is at the forefront in America and around the world. We are trying to confront the issue of race head-on by creating a world in which only Black people are superheroes -- and the BLACK superhero trope isn’t subtly cast under a label of mutant, inhuman, or meta-whatever. It is also both thrilling and liberating to create the superheroes we’ve always wanted to see -- and, frankly, be -- outside of the entrenched publishing system.”   “Sometimes a project comes along and you realize you need to be a part of it. As soon as I saw what Kwanza and Tim had in mind, I knew I had to be involved. I've known all of the people involved for years, know how professional they are,” says Jamal Igle. “I'm all about unique twists and BLACK certainly fits the bill. It's going to be a fun ride.”   “BLACK is a story that has come at an important moment in comic book culture. This is a book that brings a contemporary message of identity into a world where anything can happen.
