Back in 2012, on our previous incarnation, we released a two-parter reviewing HBO’s lauded crime drama 'The Wire'. Created by former Baltimore journalist David Simon, 'The Wire' is known, almost unequivocally, as the greatest show in television history. Sidebar Forever shares that opinion, full stop. And since the pandemic has us all spending far more time at home, we thought: "Maybe it's time to re-up?" Inspired by another Wire podcast, as well as a terrific book that chronicles the behind-the-scenes of the show, we re-watched all five seasons. That's right, we're checking in on the detail: McNulty, Lester, Kima, Cedric, Herc, Carver, Prez and Ronnie. And not to mention: Avon, Stringer, Wee Bay, D'Angelo, Bodie, Omar and even the silver-tongued Senator himself, Clay Davis ("...Sheeeeiiiiiiiiid"). It's been almost 20 years since "The Wire" debuted on HBO, and in that time, many of its character arcs and ruminations on inner-city life and the systems therein, continue to resonate powerfully. Join us as we cruise the streets of West Bald'more; looking for stash houses and unsuspecting corner boys. Cuz the game is the game — ya feel me? As always, thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe to Sidebar Forever online wherever you get your podcasts. SIDEBAR FOREVER ©2020 Dwight Clark, Swain Hunt and Adrian Johnson

June 21, 2020 is Father’s Day! And what better way to celebrate dads than with a lively discussion on the best and worst fathers in pop culture? On the 'Best Dads' list, we have Darth Vader (huh?), Furious Styles from the 1991 film 'Boyz N The Hood' and Rick Grimes of The Walking Dead fame. Holding down the 'Worst Dads' of all time are Palpatine from the Star Wars series, Detective Jimmy McNulty from HBO's "The Wire," and bounty hunter Clownface from the 1996 comic book series 'Body Bags' by Jason Pearson. Even though we chose this topic because it was lighthearted and fun, we do touch on what it takes to be a good dad, and really, a good parent overall. Thanks for listening and Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there!

Listen to our powerful Interview with acclaimed musician, author, educator and race reconciliator, Daryl Davis.** A chance encounter with members of the Ku Klux Klan led musician Daryl Davis on a quest to determine the source of the hate. His unorthodox, yet simple approach, has wielded surprising results and just might be the solution for all racial discourse. As a pianist, vocalist, and guitarist, he performs nationally and internationally with The Daryl Davis Band. He has also worked with such notables as _Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, The Legendary Blues Band,_ and many others. In 1983, A chance occurrence after one of his performances led him to befriend a member of the Ku Klux Klan. This eventually led Daryl to become the first black author to travel the country interviewing KKK leaders and members, all detailed in his book, Klan-Destine Relationships. Today, Daryl owns numerous Klan robes and hoods, given to him by active members who became his friends and renounced the organization. Davis has received the Elliott-Black and MLK awards as well as numerous national awards for his work in race relations. He is also an actor appearing in the critically acclaimed _HBO's The Wire,_ and most recently, as the subject of the documentary _Accidental Courtesy,_ which filmed his real life encounters with Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi leaders as he helps to dismantle racism across the United States.

The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century.Series FinaleThe Deuce (HBO)Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon, who also collaborated on HBO's "The Wire" and "Treme," the semifictional drama series "The Deuce" tells of the germination of the sex-trade industry in the heart of New York's Times Square. A cast of barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife seekers centers around twins Vincent and Frankie Martino (James Franco, in a dual role), who navigate the sex business after meeting well-connected mobster Rudy Pipilo. It was during her time at Case Western where McCree developed her approach of Multimedia Arts Focused Prevention Education through the formation of her organization The Thought Provoking Arts Company (TPAC). TPAC was commissioned by Case Western Reserve University to develop original arts-based programs aimed at providing prevention awareness activities for the student body with an emphasis on freshmen residents. TPAC's mission to provide comprehensive arts education and art focused prevention programming to children was fulfilled in McCree's work with multiple Ohio Public School Districts, Cuyahoga Community College, the Center for Families and Children in Cleveland Ohio and Pin Points Theatre, a national educational touring company in Washington, DC, where she served as Eastern Regional Director. Meanwhile, McCree's professional career took two mutually beneficial tracks as actress and arts educator. While performing across the country in stage productions such as The Exonerated, Fires in the Mirror and the one woman show The Gimmick, McCree was simultaneously writing and presenting on childhood education. She co-authored Artful Strategies for Prevention Education Group Work with Adolescent African-American Girls at the 23rd International Symposium on Social Work with Groups and in 1999 presented Using a Psychosocial Network to Empower Parents of Children with Sickle Cell Anemia to Maximize Life's Opportunities for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. McCree's work on stage and in education led to her serving as Media Liaison for the National Black Media Coalition. Her TV credits include The Closer Cold Case and Criminal Minds yet it is her work on HBO's The Wire that embodies the marriage of her passion for acting/storytelling with youth advocacy. Against type, McCree portrays "Delonda Brice," a villainous, misguided mother who would rather see her son selling drugs on the streets in order to support her ghetto fabulous lifestyle than attend and excel at school. Such a character couldn't be further from McCree's own and she's been able to use this deviant role as a platform for her dedication to the supportive development of young minds. McCree was a Producer of "BeBop to Hip-Hop" an educational performance at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz were she holds the position of Special Projects Coordinator. She recently appeared in the award-winning documentary "Keep On Keepin On" produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Sandi performs weekly with several improv troupes including Most Humble. She can be seen weekly at such venues as: The Groundlings Theater, Second City, iO West, The Clubhouse, Asylum Lab, Danger Room and Neon Venus. In November 2013, Most Humble is the 8-time defending champion of Second City Hollywood's Thunderdome Improv Cagematch show. In the Summer of 2015, Sandi McCree was invited to join the prestigious Sunday Company at The Groundlings. Sandi McCree is has taught and directed students at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and she teaches theatre arts at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts   Links to Sandi McCree: Twitter @SandiMcCree  Instagram @sandimccree BET.com: The New Edition Story The Wire on HBO: The WIRE    Thank You for checking out Hollywood Breakthrough Show  | Follow us on Twitter @TheBreakThur This podcast main purpose is to serve up positive information. In this episode, Black Hollywood Live hosts Jessica King, Nick Perdue and Megan Thomas interview special guest Mack Wilds. They say you never forget your first love and when Mack Wilds first fell in love, he fell hard. "The city is like a beautiful struggle, a place where roses grow through the concrete" the 24-year old singer says of his native New York City; the inspiration for his debut LP New York: A Love Story. Tristan Paul Mack Wilds is best known for his acting roles as Michael Lee and Dixon Wilson on HBO's "The Wire" and CW's "90210" respectively, but before he hit Hollywood, Wilds dreamed of a career in music. "I don't remember a time in my life when music wasn't a factor in my life," the Staten Island product says. "I was immersed in what music was in the '90s. Everything we heard in hip-hop, I could look outside of my window in the projects and see it going on." Growing up, Mack saw his father sing in local bands. He looked to follow in his dad's fo

THE TURNAROUND, George Pelecanos's fifteenth novel, is the work of a mature writer at the top of his game. It is a thoughtful examination of one event that permanently alters the lives of six young men—three black, three white. The story is both as straightforward and as complex as the characters it involves, and pulls the reader in through their palpable suffering. By creating such intimacy with this ensemble cast, Pelecanos is able to explore some of the most pressing issues facing America today—race, class, and the foreign war that districts us from these domestic battles—with depth and nuance, and without any trace of artificiality or authorial tampering. A less experienced or less gifted writer would have been tempted, in handling such material, to deliver a message, and so would have ruined a story that is infinitely more rich because it stays focused on the people it involves. Pelecanos reveals how his youthful aspirations to be a filmmaker, his experience writing for HBO's THE WIRE, and his work on the Derek Strange and Terry Quinn books all prepared him to write this understated masterpiece that is THE TURNAROUND.
