Best known for co-creating the Black series of comics, Kwanza Osajyefo began his comics journey at Marvel, where he worked with Bandit Mike and past guest John Roberts (ComiXology) in the early 2000s. From there, he moved to DC, where he co-founded and managed the digital comics imprint and contest, Zuda. After a brief stint at DC headquarters in California (where he continued in the realm of digital comics), Kwanza hooked up with a team of creators and Black Mask Studios to develop his Kickstarter-funded Black universe, which was based on the premise: what if only black people had superpowers? He's now expanded from the initial mini-series into other stories set in the Black world, including the most recent series, White. It's quite the quirky comics career, and Kwanza tells us all about how it came together.Follow Kwanza on his website, kwanzaosajyefo.com, or @kwanzer on Twitter and Instagram.__________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. How would they use these abilities, and at what cost? The conversation explores issues of representation in the themes, artwork, and characters in BLACK and comics today, as well as how the story of superheroes is changing in publishing and onscreen. Special double-sized episode!Today's guest is Kwanza Osajyefo. He is an author and creator of indie comics, in particular the comic book series ‘Black' in which it turned out that only blacks have superpowers. And that is followed these days with the new series ‘White' which features the whites' reactions to this news. This episode is double-sized, because it covers so much it couldn't be contained. Kwanza takes us through his origin story, through DC, Marvel, and webcomics, which is fascinating enough. And then we get to ‘Black' which leads to, I think, one of the deepest discussions in comic books I've seen about the nature of power, who has the power, what is power, and so on. This episode will hit you in the gut, while at the same time very philosophical. Enjoy! Imagine a world, where only BLACK people have super powers... This week we're talking about "BLACK" and its sequel "BLACK AF" by Kwanza Osajyefo + artists Tim Smith 3 and Jennifer Johnson (respectively). The books made quite an impression on the industry when they came out from 2017-2018, and was recently announced to being adapted to film by Warner Brothers. But we ask...was the book as good as the hype/concept? The book posits that in a world that already hates and fears them - what if only Black people had superpowers? In book 1 we meet the protagonist - a young man gunned down by the police, who miraculously survives, and discovers a long held conspiracy held secret over the years, that the powers that be - and the powers that have - don't want the world knowing - for very different reasons. You can probably guess where that goes. Book 2 has a pretty unique take in the already established universe, as we follow a young woman with a very Small-vill-ian origin story - as she navigates the brave new world. The usual superhero fisticuffs aside - BLACK makes room for a commentary with a pretty unique premise. It's at times ambitious, at times revolutionary, and sometimes even cringe-inducing, but regardless of how you feel, the book leaves its mark. We're not going to pretend we are even MARGINALLY qualified to comment on the Black experience in America.- but the past several months of a dumpster fire of 2020 has our country having a long overdue conversation about race. Joining us for our conversations is friend-of-the-pod, and fellow not-a-Black-person Paresh. Special Guest: Paresh Jha.

We have Jakal brimming with power, Katie brimming with defeat, Maraud brimming with overconfidence and Bhadsha brimming with poison. There is just a lot of brimming going on around here...and we do not like it... OK, we like Katie brimming with power, but not Jakal. We actually like a lot n this book. This is a fantastic issue with a mess of stuff going on. The writer and artists are swinging for the Snark equivalent of the fences, and they are connecting. Man, I really love to mix my metaphors. I guess what we are saying is that you really should drag your friends over to listen to this podcast. And if they resist, improvise. But for now, let me tell you more about our guest. Kwanza is, in his own words, ...a story-maker – cobbling together tales made of little daydreams, memories, and discoveries. An alchemist of words seeking immortality in scriptures that live on when I am done and dust, but still warm in minds and hearts of sons and daughters I will never know. I wear hats. We really could not say it better ourselves. He is a lifelong fan of Power Pack, and is also the writer of a an amazing series of books, Black and Black: America's Sweetheart, both by Black Mask Studios. And he has more coming out, including a title from Humanoids called Ignited with Mark Waid. ECCC 2019: In Conversation with Khary Randolph (Emerald City Comic Con, March 2019) ReedPOP's Emerald City Comic Con once again takes over the immense WA State Convention Center in Seattle, attracting tens of thousands of comic book and pop culture fans from across the globe, by showcasing some of the best creative talents there is to offer - our man on the ground, Dan Berry, has been very lucky to be invited along as Press, meaning hes got the chance to speak one-on-one with members of this outstanding creative melting pot. One such talent is the excellent New-York-based artist Khary Randolph, someone who continues to make quite the impression on many books of varying scale and tone, from the likes of SPIDER-MAN, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES and TEEN TITANS for the majors, to comics for the independents such as TECHJACKET (Skybound), NOBLE (Lion Forge) and CHARISMAGIC: THE DEATH PRINCESS (Aspen). Randolph provided the covers for the acclaimed BLACK series, published by Black Mask Studios - he returns to the team of writers Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3, and interior artist Jamal Igle for the next chapter in the high concept series WHITE. It's a powerful piece, full of social and racial commentary, and here Dan talks to Khary about the process of putting WHITE together, as well as upcoming projects. Thanks to Khary for taking time out of his busy con, and to Dan for bringing the interview to us...

Time Codes: 00:00:32 - Introduction 00:03:09 - A few words (and a gripe) about the 2018 Eisner Award nominations 00:11:02 - Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus 00:37:29 - Death or Glory#1 00:47:28 - Black [AF]: Widows and Orphans#1 01:03:08 - Wrap up 01:04:46 - Contact us This week Paul and Derek focus on three titles that are strikingly different in nature. They begin with Maximilian Uriarte's Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus: The World's Most Popular Military Comic Strip(Little Brown and Company). This is a hardbound volume of the entries included on Uriarte's webcomic, and it collects strips published between January 2010 and December 2016, most of what you'll find on the site. Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus also include the strips published in the Marine Corps Times. Although the guys know next to nothing about military (specifically Marine) life, they approach this text on its own terms and with a full awareness of its intended audience. Next, they look at Rick Remender and Bengal's Death or Glory #1(Image Comics). Both of the guys marvel over Bengal's art, pointing out that the visuals are what largely drive the narrative in this first issue. But both are also fans of Remender's work, and as Paul points out, this new title bears many of his stylistic stamps. This is a title that has a lot of promise, and it's yet another Remender series for the guys to keep up with. Finally, Paul and Derek discuss something never before covered on The Comics Alternative: a title from Black Mask Studios. The first issue in Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3's Black [AF]: Widows and Orphanshas recently been released, and the guys speculate on this ancillary tale in the Blackstoryworld. Although Paul is familiar with this universe, this is Derek's first foray into Black. As the guys discuss, this is an action-packed first issue, although at times a bit chaotic. Some of this confusion, in fact, may be due to the visuals. Nonetheless, it's a title worth checking out.

So happy to talk to Kwanza Osajyefo, the co-creator of the graphic novel Black which asks the simple question: "What if the world had superheroes but they were only black".     A LOT MORE about Kwanza and the rest of the team behind Black (stolen from the press release from the good people at Superfan Productions)   Timed to Black History Month comes a Kickstarter campaign to fund the new independent superhero science fiction original graphic novel BLACK, from Kwanza Johnson p/k/a Kwanza Osajyefo, the former DC Comics Digital Editor who helped launched the company’s Zuda imprint, and Tim Smith III (Iron Man, The Amazing Spiderman). BLACK, illustrated by Inkpot-Award winning artist Jamal Igle (Molly Danger, Supergirl), asks the question, “In a world that already fears and hates them – what if only Black people had superpowers?” BLACK follows the story of a young man, Kareem Jenkins, who, having miraculously survived being shot by police, learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Kareem must decide whether it's safer to keep history’s secret, or if the truth will set him free. Rounding out BLACK’s creative team are DC Comics illustrator Khary Randolph, who will contribute covers and additional artwork, and editor Sarah Litt, formerly of Vertigo and DC Comics.   “With BLACK, we’re looking to tell a great story, but we’re also purposefully challenging the pop culture status quo, which is dominated by a White male aesthetic,” says BLACK co-creator Kwanza Osajyefo. “BLACK tackles the very real and palpable issue of race, which is at the forefront in America and around the world. We are trying to confront the issue of race head-on by creating a world in which only Black people are superheroes -- and the BLACK superhero trope isn’t subtly cast under a label of mutant, inhuman, or meta-whatever. It is also both thrilling and liberating to create the superheroes we’ve always wanted to see -- and, frankly, be -- outside of the entrenched publishing system.”   “Sometimes a project comes along and you realize you need to be a part of it. As soon as I saw what Kwanza and Tim had in mind, I knew I had to be involved. I've known all of the people involved for years, know how professional they are,” says Jamal Igle. “I'm all about unique twists and BLACK certainly fits the bill. It's going to be a fun ride.”   “BLACK is a story that has come at an important moment in comic book culture. This is a book that brings a contemporary message of identity into a world where anything can happen. A world where creative writing and imaginative visuals can show an alternative to what you would normally see in mainstream books today,” says Tim Smith III.   If funded through the Kickstarter campaign launching February 1st, BLACK will be available digitally to backers as DRM-free PDFs in monthly installments, starting in mid 2016. The limited edition print run of the six-chapter BLACK graphic novel is due out late in 2016.   As additional perks, BLACK Kickstarter backers can also get: original BLACK character art; original BLACK cover art; a cameo of your likeness drawn into BLACK; a commission sketch of your choice from Tim Smith III or Jamal Igle; an original interior page from BLACK by Jamal Igle; an illustrated card set of the 6 BLACK main characters: Kareem Jenkins, Juncture, Theodore Mann, Agent Adams, Agent Washington, and O; your name in the credits page; an online portfolio review of your art, story, or comic by members of the BLACK creative team; a set of three buttons, three stickers, or 1 die cut skin featuring original BLACK art; and signed copies of BLACK.   The BLACK Kickstarter campaign is live as of February 1st and runs through February 29th.
