If you were a 90s kid, Bobbie Chase may be one of the first editors you ever knew the name of. She was omnipresent in the pages (especially the letter pages) of Peter David's 10-year run on The Incredible Hulk. But more than that, she found the most amazing talent (including Salvador Larroca and Jamal Igle) and was amazingly empowering of that talent to do their best work. Overseeing a legendary slate at Marvel that included titles like G.I. Joe, Captain America, Iron Man, Sensational She-Hulk, Thor, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, X-Force, Doctor Strange, Spirits of Vengeance, Morbius, Blade, Elektra, Alpha Flight, the Marvel/Paramount Comics Star Trek line, and more, Bobbie was an editorial force of nature. She was in charge of the Marvel Edge imprint, edited the Heroes Return limited series, and later joined DC, where she edited Batman titles and went on to become Vice President of Talent Development. She was most recently at WEBTOON Unscrolled (when this interview was recorded) but is no longer with the company. You can follow Bobbie on X @bobbiechase._____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. In a special year end episode of Off Panel, we look at the defining themes of 2023 in comics with the help of Books with Pictures' Katie Pryde, The Beat's Heidi MacDonald, and writer/artist Jamal Igle. Up first is Pryde (1:10), who talks about this unusual time in comics retail, what started us on this path, the exhaustion in the space, where it's manifesting itself, the metadata situation, how Books with Pictures is adjusting to it, and more. After that is MacDonald (30:01), who discusses the world of comics marketing, how the current state of social media and comic sites is affecting things, the unseen work of marketing, fitting within the distribution system, its impact, and more. And to close is Igle (1:02:15), who talks about the overwhelming fear of the unknown in comics, where and how it manifests, how it impacts things, the path forward, and more.
And there came a time when Ian finally found the opportunity to release recordings made at recent conventions. That time is indeed today! Depending on your definition of recent, that is. First, we flash back to last year's Anime NYC, just in time for this year's Anime NYC, as Ian interviews manga translator for books such as Cat + Gamer and Marvel's Demon Wars, writer and beer buddy, Zack Davisson, as well as artist Robert Wilson IV from Oni Press' Heartthrob, Vault's Barbaric: The Harvest Blades, Bitch Planet issue 3, and a bunch of posters for bands such as Metallica and Weird Al! We then flash forward to New York Comic Con 2023, as Ian runs through his experiences at the convention, followed by convo on the floor with Donovan Morgan Grant and artist and creator extraordinaire, Mr. Jamal Igle. This includes discussion of The Harvey Awards, the existence of Death Note: The Musical, attending the Steve Ditko panel on a whim, and so much more. (1:28:32)

Episode 840 - Jason Interviews Alex Segura - Project: Cryptid - Ahoy ComicsFor the last five years, AHOY Comics has asked its readers to believe in the weird and sublime — whether it's a friendship between Jesus and a superhero, a grandmother who fights eldritch horrors, or a space squadron run entirely by cats. This fall, AHOY Comics' latest jam-packed anthology, PROJECT: CRYPTID, will feature unbelievably hilarious and hilariously unbelievable tales about cryptids from around the world. Featuring comics and short stories from well-established creators as well as new voices, PROJECT: CRYPTID will transport readers from the depths of Loch Ness to the wilds of the Yeti's Himalayan Mountains to the Ohio backroads where the Loveland Frogman lurks, asking the important questions like are any of these mysterious, unthinkable creatures actually real? And more importantly, are they funny? The anthology will feature comics and stories from writers Mark Russell, Paul Cornell, Alisa Kwitney, Alex Segura, Bryce Ingman, Paul Constant, Liana Kangas, Henry Barajas, AA Rubin, Joe Illidge, Melissa F. Olson, Zander Cannon, Gene Ha, Hanna Bahedry, Matt Ligeti, Stuart Moore and more, as well as art by Jordi Perez, Madeline Seely, PJ Holden, Mike Spicer, Mauricet, Steven Bryant, Peter Krause, Richard Pace, Jamal Igle, Ted and Ro, Lew Stringer, Lane Lloyd, and more.Buy it: https://comicsahoy.com/news/ahoys-newest-anthology%E2%80%94project-cryptid CFP Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofitCFP Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comDonations Keep Our Show Going, Please Give https://bit.ly/36s7YeLThank you so much for listening and spreading the word about our little comic book podcast. From DC Comics intern to award-winning independent artist, Jamal Igle brings focus and creativity to his every project. After the internship and building his comics resume with small publishers, Jamal hopped into animation with a storyboarding stint at Sony Animation. New Warriors brought him back into the comics fold, and he's been steadily crushing it ever since. At Marvel, it was Iron Fist/Wolverine and Daredevil/Shi, and at DC, he's best known for long runs on Supergirl and Firestorm. He's the primary artist on Black, co-created and written by past guest Kwanza Osajyefo, and did the creator-owned thing with Molly Danger. It's a smorgasbord of comics fun, so strap in and listen up!You can follow Jamal on Facebook (/jamal.igle), Twitter (@JAMALIGLE), and Instagram (@jamal_igle_artist). ______________________________If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Scott Snyder is back on Comic Book Couples Counseling! The comic creator returns to the show for a joyfully thoughtful conversation discussing his next round of Best Jackett Press/ComiXology Originals: Barnstormers, Canary, and Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine. In this episode, we start our conversation with the San Diego Comic-Con International and what makes this year different from any other - besides the pandemic, obviously. Presenting your own comics to the con crowd is unique from promoting Batman or Justice League. These are Scott Snyder's babies, and there is something incredibly freeing about their Comic-Con arrival. From there, we dig into each title, discussing how his collaborations with artists Dan Panosian, Tula Lotay, and Jamal Igle create unfettered imagination. The "Scottober" ComiXology wave is exactly what readers want someone like Scott Snyder to do with his talent, time, and opportunity. These are comics with the pedal pressed to the metal, striving to accomplish what previous efforts only scratched upon. Toward the conversation's end, Snyder is kind enough to reveal another project on the horizon. One, we're extremely excited to see realized, and we think you will too. Collaboration, once again, is the magic word. The first issues of Barnstormers, Canary, and Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine are now available from ComiXology. You can also track Scott Snyder on Twitter HERE, Instagram HERE, and subscribe to his Substack HERE. Sort through his Best Jackett Press titles on their website. You can listen to our previous Scott Snyder Creator Corner HERE. Today's episode is Part 3 in our #CBCCatSDCC coverage celebrating the return of the San Diego Comic-Con International. Part two was our convo with Matt Kindt discussing his new Flux House imprint at Dark Horse Comics. You can listen to his episode HERE. What would we call this launch?Originally announced as an 8-series deal, when might we see Duck and Cover and Book of Evil? From a creation standpoint, have these series been completed for a while or are they still being finalized? The first three titles were clearly leaning towards horror and monsters, where are you going genre wise with these three new titles?6 degrees of kevin baconDudley Datson and Clear both introduced some wild technology that I could see become a reality, in another life would you be an inventor?I love that you're reminding folks of the idea of Barnstorming, which I think only Tom Cruise is doing these days but I could be wrong. In this episode:Mike and Ed set aside their regular “in-universe” programming to come to 2021 and speak with Tom Peyer and Jamal Igle about Jack Kirby's legacy. Jack Kirby was the most prolific artist in the Silver Age of Marvel comics. He was the co-creator of the Fantastic Four, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Dr. Strange - most of the major protagonists covered on the regular episodes of the show. Jack would go on to create the Eternals, who are getting their first major film treatment premiere today (hence the timing of this episode).Tom started reading comics in the early Silver Age. He went on to be a writer and editor at DC, Marvel, and other imprints. He was an assistant editor on Neil Gainman's Sandman.Jamal is the creator of Molly Danger, and is known for his penciling, inking and coloring work on Supergirl and Firestorm. In 2007, he was an artist on Countdown to Final Crisis featuring Darkseid, who was originally created by Jack Kirby. This experience led to Jamal's interest in Jack Kirby's legacy. He has lots to share with us today. We are super lucky to have these two guys on the show. We hope you enjoy it!Please feel free to reply to this email with any feedback you have. Do you enjoy these out of universe discussions? Are you impatient to get back to 1963? Let us know!Ed and Mike (from 2021) This is a public episode.
