In this interview, Joshua Toomey welcomes Alan Robert, bassist for Life of Agony and accomplished artist, to discuss his creative projects. Alan shares insights about his latest endeavor, an official Beetlejuice coloring book in collaboration with Warner Brothers, which coincides with the release of the new Beetlejuice movie. He talks about the process of drawing scenes from the movie and how much fun it was to immerse himself in Tim Burton's world. Alan also reflects on his artistic journey, from illustrating other projects like the Universal Monsters coloring book to his early experiences learning from legendary comic book artist Walter Simonson during his time at the School of Visual Arts. He recalls how comic conventions were much smaller in the early days and how breaking into the comic industry back then was tough. He shares how he eventually balanced music and art, creating iconic band merchandise and album covers for groups like Black Sabbath and Pantera. The conversation also touches on Alan's roots, his longtime friendship with Biohazard's Evan Seinfeld, and how watching them succeed inspired his own musical career. Throughout the interview, Alan discusses the evolution of creating art, how digital tools have revolutionized the process, and the importance of meeting deadlines when working on big projects like Beetlejuice. Alan discusses the creative process behind his comic work, drawing inspiration from music, like Pantera's Cemetery Gates, which influenced his short story. He also highlights his collaboration with Z2 Comics and other projects like the Type O Negative graphic novel. Alan reflects on balancing his artistic endeavors with touring, recalling his earlier days of drawing comics backstage during tours in the early 2010s. He contrasts that with his recent approach, where he focuses on intricate artwork, like The Beauty of Horror, while at home and reserves touring for music. Alan also reminisces about his time at the School of Visual Arts and shares a fun experience watching Keanu Reeves live on The Late Show. He appreciates the balance of his current life, splitting time between touring and comics. He mentions recent recording sessions at a legendary NYC studio, hinting at exciting music releases soon. Finally, he touches on the importance of creator-owned comic projects and his freedom to expand his characters across multiple platforms.Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Support Toomey on Patreon www.patreon.com/talktoomey Concept Cafes Coffee https://www.conceptcafes.com Subscribe to Talk Toomey on YouTube for in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. #talktoomey #lifeofagony #coloringbook #beetlejuice #bassplayer

More than 35 years ago, Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider marched into the United States Senate's Committee on Commerce in a jean jacket and tank top to confront a band of concerned Washington housewives hellbent on silencing the howl of metal and beyond. Co-founded by Tipper Gore, a committee of politicians' spouses labeling themselves the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) had lobbied to plaster "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" labels on any music that conformed to their definition of sexual, violent, or drug-endorsing. Partnering with Z2 Comics, Snider's war to preserve the first amendment will be immortalized in He's Not Gonna Take It, a graphic novel charting the rocker's passionate battle against censorship alongside writer Frank Marraffino (Marvel Zombies) and artist Steve Kurth (Avengers, X-Force). Dee Snider: He's Not Gonna Take It will be available at retailers everywhere on November 21, 2023. The following journey would forever forge the name Dee Snider alongside the battle for freedom of expression-in the arts and beyond. This new graphic novel charts that one-man war throughout Dee's life. From a childhood where he was frequently silenced, through the early efforts to stifle his band's music, to the open warfare of the PMRC hearings in Washington DC, and his current efforts on social media, He's Not Gonna Take It tells the story of why free speech is so important to this man who has perpetually fought for it-even when it endangered everything that was important to him. "When I look back on that historic day, I think, 'How did I fit balls that big into those skintight jeans!?'" Snider recounts. "Then I reflect on the fact that I still stand for everything I stood for all those years ago...and I'm ready to do battle again." "Unless you grew up during the PMRC hearings, I don't think you can really understand what a massive impact it had as teenagers watched Dee testify before congress about the importance of freedom of speech," editor Rantz A. Hoseley explains. "Metal and rock preached rebellion and fighting back in the song lyrics, but here was the only frontman who was walking the walk. In a world where you thought that adults said one thing and did another, it was the moment where you could believe. Yes, there are people out there who will fight for what is right, against all odds, no matter what the cost. It's a story that is more vital today than ever."

30 years after Joe, his friend "Kaptain" Kevin and their boss Matt Mangas helped the Twisted Sister singer launch his radio career at WRCN on Long Island, his adventures in front of Tipper Gore's censorship committee have been turned into THIS graphic novel and he catches up with JT on censorship, free speech.... and even vaccinations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Every accomplished creative work is miraculous. Bringing anything over the finish line should be celebrated. However, even rarer are the projects that find their way to the artist whom no one else could compete with regarding that project. Dave Chisholm was seemingly born to adapt Miles Davis' life into comic book form. Holding a doctorate in jazz trumpet from the Eastman School of Music, Dave Chisholm better understands Miles Davis than most cartoonists. The icon has haunted Chisholm since youth, and he's been attempting to translate Davis' vibe into visuals for nearly as long. After successfully capturing the audible into the sequential with three previous graphic novels (Instrumental, Chasin' the Bird, Enter the Blue), Dave Chisholm got the call. THE. CALL. Z2 Comics, Chisholm's previous publisher, would partner with the Miles Davis Estate on an original graphic novel, and they wanted Dave Chisholm to make it a reality. The pressure was on, but we're here to report that Chisholm rose to the occasion. Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound is what happens when the perfect subject meets the perfect creator. When such an event occurs, all should take notice. Whatever your relation to Miles Davis, you need this comic in your hands. For the uninitiated, it's a gorgeously illustrated plunge into a genius' mind. For the faithful, Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound cleverly pursues the trumpeter's interior life, using his autobiography as the narrative backbone. We meet Davis after a severe car accident when a doctor suggests he start scribbling as part of his rehabilitation. The scrawls become our gateway into his history as Davis revisits the critical moments that made him. Along this journey, we encounter the legendary events and reflect on the divergent points that suggest a radically different path for Davis. And through it all, you sense Dave Chisholm celebrating and challenging the Miles Davis who helped shape him. On this week's episode, Dave Chisholm returns to Comic Book Couples Counseling. Together, we explore how Miles Davis molded his imagination and the pressure he felt to shape his massive life into one complete comic book saga. We discuss his joy toward the accomplished work and why he knows Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound is the best thing he's ever done. With such a feat behind him, does he worry about the empty road ahead? Afterward, continue this conversation with Dave Chisholm by visiting his Website and following his TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter. Most importantly, pre-order Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound via Z2 Comics. It's set for release on November 7th. Can't wait? Grab his other comics immediately. This episode continues our year-long partnership with Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader. Each episode from now on will feature our new "Referrals" segment, sponsored by them, where we recommend other comics titles for those wishing to explore this week's themes and concepts further. Did the concept of a Monte Cristo adaptation come to you first, or the high-flying action scenes. There are many different characters in this work, do you do anything special to get into character, like speak out loud in voices, or write evil characters left-handed (joking!)?The relationship between mentor and student is heartfelt and real. What did you seek to accomplish first and foremost with these characters?I was curious about the format and length allowed to you via the graphic novel format. The guest for this episode is trumpet player, cartoonist, composer, and educator Dave Chisholm, whose latest work is Chasin’ the Bird: Charlie Parker in California — a 144-page graphic novel (via Z2 Comics) commissioned by the Parker estate in celebration of Bird’s Centennial showcasing a stretch of time the infamous jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker spent in California. During our conversation, we talked about how this idea took shape and what sort of research went into developing this graphic novel. We also talked about his music background and how he was able to combine that with comics, along with so much more. Escuchar audio

While Dave's CHASIN' THE BIRD has been delayed until October, you can still get your Chisholm fix with this earlier chat with Greg from March 17, 2017. Dave Chisholm may not have been in the comics industry long enough to achieve the 'rock star' status of someone like Jim Lee or Paul Pope, but in terms of creating both comics AND music, he's a band apart from just about every other creator out there. Because when you write and draw your own graphic novel (Instrumental from Z2 Comics), compose/perform a companion soundtrack to be released simultaneously WITH that graphic novel, AND have another full-length album of music from the band you front being released around the same time (Talking Under Water self-titled debut album on April 28th, 2017) . . . what other label is there? Decide for yourself after listening to this interview, where Greg talks with Dave about process both musical and sequential, the difficulty of getting the essence of sound across a silent medium, and more. Where else could you hear talk about Frank Quitely, Kevin Nowlan, and Brian Eno in the same discussion? And if that wasn't enough, you can hear of clips "Celebration" and "Death and the Narrator" (from "Instrumental"'s upcoming score) in the episode itself, PLUS the full "Celebration" track from the Multiversity Comics episode post page! BONUS: Here are the two other non-"Instrumental" pieces of music mentioned in the episode: "Tossing and Turning" from the Tossing and Turning EP by Talking Under Water "Calligraphy" from Calligraphy by Dave Chisholm Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. This is the story of a musician who comes upon a trumpet with unique powers, allowing him to transform the lives around him, including those of his fellow bandmates. Dave's background -- a professional trumpet player, songwriter, composer, bandleader, and educator -- becomes the wellspring from which he pulls his narrative, so much of his conversation with Derek is devoted to the power of music and its translation into visual form. The graphic novel also comes with a soundtrack, seven songs composed and performed by Dave. Over the course of the interview the two discuss the genesis of this project, the fantastical nature of the story, the unique links between audio and visual representations, and Dave's work as an artist on this and other projects, including the Study Group webcomic, The Tyranny of the Muse.

While Andy and Derek were at HeroesCon last weekend, they talked briefly with a variety of creators in Artists Alley -- see last Tuesday's show for those conversations -- but they also had the chance to sit down for longer, more substantive interviews. And they made it a point to do so with Miss Lasko-Gross and Kevin Colden, the creators behind the new series from Z2 Comics, The Sweetness. The first issue has just been released, so the guys had the opportunity, thanks to Miss and Kevin, to read it and ask their guests about this unique title. Miss and Kevin describe The Sweetness as a mix between Star Wars and Breaking Bad, where a group of ex-cons and low-level criminals work for a UPS-like delivery service in space...but with a focus on badass women smugglers. Derek and Andy ask specifically about the two unlikely paired female protagonists, Nelly and Scout, but they also discuss their inept male companion Bachmaan, a curious character who Miss admits to not being able to kill off, especially given the way that Kevin has drawn him. The two guests also discuss their working relationship, the benefits and challenges of being married and working on the same title. In fact, Miss and Kevin work so productively together that many times during the interview, the Two Guys just sit back and let their guests carry the back-and-forth. The result is an engaging conversation about this promising new series, one that the guys hope will be shuttling illegal cargo for a long time.
It's Free Comic Book Day 2016, and to celebrate the event Derek is back at Collected Comics and Games in Plano, TX, to talk with customers and shop employees about the various offerings for this year. Some of the standout FCBD titles from those gathered around the discussion table are Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom (Arcana), We Can Never Go Home/Young Terrorists (Black Mask Studios), ROM (IDW Publishing), One-Punch Man/My Hero Academia(VIZ Media), Oddly Normal (Image Comics), Civil War II (Marvel Comics), The Phantom (Hermes Press), and Serenity/Hellboy/Aliens (Dark Horse Comics). Such a treat to talk to Koren Shadmi about his new graphic novel The Abaddon, and maybe to get a little philosophical, even a little existential in the process. Be sure to shout out to Koren on the twitter @KorenShadmi and tell him how much you loved hearing him on Crowwdfinders (and I suppose, by extension, how much you love Crowdfinders, thanks!!!) More on Koren and The Abaddon (from the good folks who do his publicity) From award-winning illustrator Koren Shadmi comes THE ABADDON, a strikingly cinematic graphic novel loosely based on Jean-Paul Sartre’s play NO EXIT, due out November 12th online and in bookstores, from Z2 Comics. Originally created as a webcomic, THE ABADDON tells the story of a young man, Ter, who finds himself trapped in an otherworldly apartment with a group of dysfunctional, ill-matched roommates. Ter is aghast to discover that his new, grotesque reality is not governed by the laws of nature, and that his roommates are missing critical chunks of their memories and identities -- as is he. Creator Koren Shadmi’s work was first published in his native Israel when he was a teenager. His haunting, alluring characters pull readers straight into Ter’s David Lynch-esque reality. On his captivating and, at times, horrifying quest for clarity and control, Ter remembers that he was once a soldier, and is forced to face the aftermath of his time on the frontlines -- a journey that echoes Shadmi’s own three year-stint in the Israeli Army. Shadmi is already a well-known creator in Israel and Europe, and this fall’s publication of THE ABADDON promises to substantially elevate his U.S. profile. Through THE ABADDON, U.S. readers and critics alike will discover Shadmi’s intense combination of dark humor and drama; will feel a rare, visceral connection to characters that embody all of our deepest, darkest thoughts. Koren Shadmi is an Israeli born, Brooklyn based graphic novelist and illustrator. His books have been published internationally and include: IN THE FLESH, THE ABADDON, and most recently: MIKE’s PLACE: A TRUE STORY OF LOVE, BLUES AND TERROR IN TEL AVIV. Koren’s illustration and comics have appeared in publications such as: The Wall Street Journal, Wired, BusinessWeek, the Village Voice, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Mother Jones, Playboy, and many others. His illustration work has won several awards at the Society of Illustrators.
Laughed my butt off talking to Will Tracy and Gabe Koplowitz about their new book from Z2 Comics. Great dudes, super fun conversation, but I must warn you, sit down before you listen because you will laugh your butt off too and will be unable to sit down after you listen. Be sure to shout out to these two amazing creators on the Twitter @williamtracy and @gabekoplowitz A bit about the book (from Z2's promo department): Writers Will Tracy (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) and Gabe Koplowitz, are, with artist Miguel Porto, creating their comic book debut ALLEN: SON OF HELLCOCK, due out this December from Z2 Comics. Title character Allen is cowardly, directionless, and less physically menacing than a daffodil. He’s also the only son of the mightiest hero ever to plunge his sword hilt-deep into the dark heart of evil… the mighty HELLCOCK! Enjoy the ride as Allen is thrust sword-first into a not-so-classic fantasy quest that, frankly, he would rather just sit out.
