In this episode of The Corner of Story and Game, writer, educator, and cross-media storyteller David Gallaher joins us to explore one of the most nuanced challenges in narrative design: how to create emotionally grounded characters that hold up, regardless of the medium.David draws from his work on comics like High Moon and The Only Living Boy, as well as his narrative leadership on games like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, to outline what he calls the character's “fire, scar, and lie.” This powerful framework offers writers and designers a durable, emotional blueprint for characters that need to live across formats from the page to the controller to the streaming screen. We talk about:
Your favorite folk-rock duo of facts guide you through the troubled waters that lead to the creation of this beloved classic album and its iconic title track. They'll give you a rundown of Simon and Garfunkel's epic feud, which started in childhood and only intensified with stardom, and explain why this record marked the end of the road for the pair. (Basically, if the book 'Catch-22' had never been written, S&G might still be together today...) But it's not all doom and gloom! They'll discuss how "Cecilia" was quietly groundbreaking for its pioneering use of sampling, why its lyrics were a harbinger of social change, and also detail the bizarre connection it has to a Beatles classic. They'll get into Paul Simon's thorny relationship with cultural appropriation on "El Condor Pasa," his unexpected inspiration behind the title song, and how he got that god tier drum sound on "The Boxer." The guys try not to cry as they expose the hidden messages Paul included to his (increasingly estranged) old friend on "The Only Living Boy in New York" and "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright," and unconcover the poignant secret meaning of the final album tracks — but you're welcome to shed a tear, if you want. It's a quick on this week, with lots of goodies! We cover Abigial, Supacell, Bodies, the Unbreakable trilogy, Brooklynn, and The Only Living Boy in New York. Andrew isn't here this week but his presence is felt, as Lauren took his recommendation and watched all 3 Unbreakable movies. She chose to watch in chronological order rather than release order. Overall, she was satisfied with the trilogy and the acting, of course, was top notch. Sticking with that super hero life, Kevin talks Supacell over on Netflix. It's an excellent, gritty, take on a cell of superheros in South London. That seems like a play on words, but it's also a super secret (that is more of a play on words...) hint at what lies beneath the surface of the show. It's a solid watch that will be much more worth the effort if they announce season 2! Next we jump into the "ywe watched it so maybe you don't have to" section. Lauren watched The Only Living Boy in New York. It's a star studded cast that is somehow a quick watch and also lifeless. Kevin watch Bodies which sounds a little more watchable, to be honest. It's take on time travel is flawed and the payoff isn't as good as some of the execution, but the actibg is great and it's at least a little bit of a mind bender for a while. Getting back on track, Lauren watched Brooklynn, starring Saoirse Ronan. It's an early '50s tale of an Irish woman coming to America. It's a well told and well acted love story that hops continents and cultural divides. Kevin closes it out with a rave review for the recent horror flick Abigail. It's a fun take on the vampire mythology and the acting is fantastic. The little girl who plays Abigail is magnificent and an absolute scene stealer. If fun horror, rather than terrifying horro, is your jam, you will definitely love this one! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! This episode is part of an international triumvirate, which has been put together with the help of old friend of the podcast, Ian Wray, and new friend of the podcast, Lucy Natarajan. Ian, regular listeners will know, is a Professor at the Heseltine Institute for Public Policy, Practice and Place at University of Liverpool. Lucy is one of the editors of the Built Environment journal, a co-founder of Place Alliance, an Associate Lecturer at Oxford Brookes and an Associate Professor at UCL's Bartlett School of Planning. Ian and Lucy compiled the December 2022 edition of Built Environment and sought in so doing to explore ‘the power of plans'. This, they endeavoured to do, by way of a series of internationally commissioned case studies on grand plans that have been shown to work, asking how they worked and why. In this series Sam Stafford explores with Lucy and Ian three of those case studies. In this episode, in a conversation recorded remotely at the end of November 2022, Sam and Lucy talk to Bob Yaro about New York, a city that has experienced rapid growth, rapid decline and an impressive economic turnaround. New York has long been planned on a city region scale, but the origin of it's series of great plans lies in a small number of planning pioneers and philanthropists. That economic turnaround has much to do, despite it not having a statutory function, with the Regional Planning Association, with which Bob is heavily involved and who's role he describes as “advancing ideas whose time has not yet come". With special guest star comic and video game writer and creator, David Gallaher (@DavidGallaher): The New Warriors v1 #68 - 71 Venom: The Hunted: #1-3 The New Warriors v2 #1 We did it! We made it to the end of our New Warriors coverage. And let me just say, it is not the content, it is the pure volume of books we were covering. I just do not think that we will be doing this again. And yet we have at least two more series that we could do just like this.....Oh dear. Well, we should get on with the real reason we are here. I mean, we pay for some named talent to show up, we should talk about him. (FYI, we did not pay for him to be on.) David Gallaher is an actual comic book writer, known for Darkstar and the Winter Guard, The Only Living Boy, Box 13, and Green Lantern Corps. He is also a huge fan of the New Warriors, which is good, because Rick and Jeff need all the help they can get. Now that we are at the end of this series, we have a sick number of Warriors. They may be down one smartship, but they have a powered up Nova, the correct Speedball, and a new time manipulator. Not too shabby for a team that started with attitude and an unlimited supply of money. We really only covered these books to get a sense of Alex on another team, and we really were not impressed. Alex was more of a tool that the Warriors used, but he never was a real character. He faded into the background and was more white paint than he usually is. Speaking of background, we should talk about some of the great details in the background of these books. They were pretty incredible, funny, and foreshadowy. Yes, I just made up a word because I was making a list and I needed a third thing. Don't you judge me. I spend time and effort doing this when I really do not need to. You will cry when I am gone. Ok, done with my rant for now. But you better behave, or I will start another one! Now, where was I? Probably pontificating on a life lost, a body destroyed, and the hopes of a sequel. Well, that about wraps it up for this experiment. I am not sure how we will tackle other large runs with one Power Pack character, but it will not be like this. But we will think of something. In this episode, I explore the famous The Only Living Boy in New York Quote “The farthest distance in the world, is between how it is and how you thought it was gonna be”. First, I talk about the scriptwriter for this movie, Allan Loeb, and explain his addiction to gambling. Then move on to explain the illusion of happiness that people always believe in. Then I give an example of a scene from the movie 'Soul' to further explain my point. Then I conclude by leaving with you a trick to happiness. Hope you enjoy this episode. On March 7th, 1970 Simon and Garfunkel’s fifth studio album 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' started a ten week run at number one on the US chart. The title track was in the middle of a six week run at the top of the US singles chart. It would also reach #1 in the UK in March of ’70. It topped the charts in ten countries total. By the time the album had been released, the duo of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had split up; making this the last Simon & Garfunkel studio album to be released. What a way to go out. Two Grammy awards went to the album with another four for the title track. The album went on to sell in the ballpark of 25 million copies and has since been considered one of the greatest albums of all time. In this episode we’ll get into the story of the making of the album thanks to clips from an amazing documentary from 2011 called "The Harmony Game". Interview clips from both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel included along with some of the various collaborators who played an important role in the success of the album. Also, hear the three songs that could have made the album but were ultimately left off. TRACKLISTING:SIDE ONE:1. "Bridge over Troubled Water" 2. "El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)"3. "Cecilia"4. The Opus is crossing a bridge into its seventh season. All good things come to an end, and that is certainly the case for Simon and Garfunkel. With 1970's Bridge Over Troubled Water, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sewed a button to their timeless collaboration. At the time, though, the album wasn't exactly the ideal swan song for critics, who were mixed on the release, contending that the collection of songs didn't live up to its predecessor, 1968's Bookends. History prevailed, though. Bridge Over Troubled Water went on to win Album of the Year at the 1971 Grammys, taking home both Record and Song of the Year for its title track. What's more, the album went on to become one of the highest-selling albums of all time. Since then, tracks like "The Only Living Boy in New York", "Baby Driver", and "Cecilia" have all become permanent fixtures in pop culture. That was then and this is now. In the season seven premiere of The Opus, host Andy Bothwell traces the footsteps of the two bards, even visiting the locations where they recorded. In fact, you'll hear the very halls that helped raise their voices into the heavens. What's more, Bothwell will peel back the immaculate production of the album's most eclectic tracks. It's an aural journey of the senses. Fortunately, he's not the only living boy on this episode. Joining Bothwell is an assembly of guests that include Nicholas Thorburn of The Unicorns and Islands; recording engineer and Tape Op founder Larry Crane; and hip-hop musician and Anticon co-founder Yoni Wolf of Why?. Together, they chart the album's rampant influences and deduce that everyone's ripped off "Cecilia". So, get your plane right on time, and climb aboard. In celebration of the album's 50th anniversary, stream a selection of Simon & Garfunkel's best tracks via all major streaming services. You can also enter to win a vinyl bundle featuring the duo's entire collaborative discography.

As teacher, I saw firsthand how anxiety can haunt children. With this series, I’m exploring how children adapt to adversity. Readers might gravitate to this story because of the exotic and dangerous creatures, but the story will resonate because the characters grapple with issues that kids relate to, like intolerance, self-confidence, and feeling like the odd one out.

Drew & Patrick get to talk with comic book writer David Gallaher, creator of ‘The Only Living Boy’ and ‘High Moon‘ comics. We chat about his Convergence: Green Lantern Corps tie-in, how to properly GM a game of Marvel RPG, and the new Supergirl trailer. We also talk about comic books.
Co-hosts Myron Rumsey and Bill Giancoli are joined by Harvey Award winning writer David Gallaher, who along with frequent collaborator Steve Ellis are teaming up for the Convergence: Green Lantern Corps limited series. David talks about how he sees the triad of Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardner and how their group dynamics will lead into an interesting tale set during the days leading up to the DC Comics' infamous Crisis on Infinite Earths event. David also shares information about other projects, High Moon and The Only Living Boy. (Note: There are some audio hiccups in this episode due to some connection issues during the interview.) It's new month, so that means it's time for another episode of The Comics Alternative Webcomics. For February Derek and Andy W. discuss two current ongoing webcomics and one completed title. First, they look at K. C. Green and Anthony Clark's Back, a western/fantasy story about the end of the world, or as the website describes it, "Not post apocalyptic, just the end of it all." This is a relatively new webcomic -- with only a short prologue and what appears to be the completed first chapter -- so the guys are really getting in on the ground floor with this one. They discuss the cartoony or iconic art style, which adds to the all-age flavor of the story, while at the same time commenting on the weighty philosophical themes the authors seem to be juggling: fate, destiny, and free will. There is also a lot of action and humor that will resonate with readers young and old. The only downside to this title -- if you want to call it a "downside" -- is that it's only updated once a week, every Wednesday, and this is such an fun read that the guys are bummed that they have to wait once a week for the next installment. Next, they look at The Only Living Boy, a adventurous dystopian fantasy from creators David Gallaher and Steve Ellis (and through their studio, Bottled Lightning). This is described as a young adult title, although Andy observes that this is the kind of story he would associate more with younger readers, and that it doesn't really fit in the "Young Adult" section that he's used to in his library. Nonetheless, The Only Boy is a title that can be appreciated by readers of all age, and having started a little over two years ago, there is enough material for anyone to get into Gallaher and Ellis's evolving narrative world. There are three chapters, or three issues, of the comic so far, and the webcomic is updated three times a week. Both Derek and Andy enjoy this title, but at the same time they comment on the haphazardness of the plotting -- at least at times it appears that way -- and the awkward navigability of the comic's archival pages. Finally, they look at Demian 5's When I Am King, an early webcomic that was created between October 1999 and July 2001. Even though this is an older title, the Two Guys comment on how current or up-to-date it appears, easily standing alongside -- and even possibly outshining -- many of the webcomics written today. The story is relatively simple, but it's the way that Damian 5 tells the tale that makes it so compelling. The creator definitely utilizes the "infinite canvas" of the web page, and there are many places where the reader has to scroll up, down, and to the sides in order to get all of the narrative. This kind of interactiveness makes this "simple" story even more engaging, and this, along with the variation of art styles and occasional animation, make When I Am King a classic in the webcomics medium.
