Grab your boomstick and ready your chainsaw hand because on today's episode I'm chatting with Tony Fleecs and Justin Greenwood about Army of Darkness Forever. Issue #1 is out October 11th and it does not disappoint. This series picks up immediately after the Director's Cut ending of the 1993 movie and is extremely satisfying to this longtime fan, but it also works perfectly as a jumping-on point for new initiates of the Deadite Army. Tony, Justine, and I chat about the task of creating a comic that appeals to fans both old and new, wondering why no one had tried this before, and capturing the spirit of Ash Williams in both the dialogue and the visuals. This was such a fun conversation and I hope folks love the episode and the comic as much as I did.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Last week, we lost a dear friend in the comics community, and the co-host of this podcast. Curtis Fisher, aka Skipntosh, was like a big brother to me. I enjoyed telling him as much when we would record our podcast episodes together. I don't know how he found the channel or our community, but he immediately made his presence felt. Always there to plug awesome indie comics and challenge us to think deeply about our critiques. Skip cared deeply. About comics. About music. About basketball. And about people. Skip loved being a part of the community. He loved storytelling that went beyond the surface. He loved obsessing over scripts, line art, colors and lettering (in that order). He loved seeing everyone get the praise their art deserved, and he wanted to contribute to their successes in any way he could. In some instances, that just meant yelling very enthusiastically and singing the praises of people like Jonathan Hickman, Nick Dragotta, Dan Watters, Ram V, Justin Greenwood, and countless others. Skip wanted a healthy fandom. Where we can all bond over great stories and great art. Where even if we didn't agree on the quality of storytelling, we could at least bond over the fact that comics all brought us here in the first place. If a conversation got too toxic, Skip didn't really want to participate. And I think that's why we were lucky enough to have him among our ranks. Whether the debate was about Tom King, LeBron vs MJ, or the best 80s B-Movies, Skip loved a healthy discussion. In the days since I learned of his passing, I've been trying to decide what to institute on the channel in Skip's honor. Maybe an Indie Pick of the Week, or a monthly citizenship award. The truth is, there's nothing I can do to fill the gap left by Skip's passing. He was one of a kind in a way that can't really be quantified. Perhaps the best I can do is amplify these words by our mutual friend Bunkmasta B: “Skip's only gone if we let him be gone. When we talk about our favorite comics, and particularly dope indies, Skip's there. When we have disagreements with each other but always keep it super respectful and take the time to listen to what the other person is saying instead of waiting for our turn to say why they're wrong, Skip's there. When we choose to see the good and the beauty in things when everyone else is just latching onto surface level reasons why it's bad, Skip's there.” My prayers are with Curtis' family, especially his two daughters; his friends across all fandoms, and with all the people who knew him best. Thanks for sharing him with us. If you knew Curtis, I'd love to read some of your favorite memories with him in the comments below. To paraphrase a marketing line from the 80's - adventure has a new name, and that name is Shahidah El-Amin. The lead character in the recent Image Comics mini-series Compass, Shahidah is a 13th Century scholar from Baghdad's House of Wisdom who has traveled to the British Isles to investigate claims of a tribe that has found the secret to eternal life. Along the way to discovering the truth, Shahidah encounters different mysteries, cultures, surprises, allies, enemies, and those who would be both. Now collected in trade paperback as Compass: The Cauldron of Eternal Life, the series was drawn by Justin Greenwood, colored by Daniela Miwa, lettered by Simon Bowland, and written by our guests today: the Australian writing duo of Dave Walker and Robert Mackenzie. The conversation covers the meaning of adventure in today's world, the Venn diagram of role-playing games, comics, and improv theatre, the price of comics Down Under, doing your creative homework, ranking Indiana Jones's exploits, and much more!

This week we are reviewing The Weatherman, The Magic Order, The Last Siege and Stellar.                                           (Rod's Pick) Stellar from IMAGE COMICS written by Joseph Keatinge with art by Bret Blevins                                          Stellar was taken as a child and transformed into the ultimate weapon, one that would end an intergalactic war. She succeeded…at everything except finding peace. Reduced to a bounty hunter, she scours the worlds she’s broken, searching for redemption. But there are other weapons loose in the galaxy, who just can’t leave the war behind them. JOSEPH KEATINGE (GLORY, SHUTTER) and legendary artist BRET BLEVINS (New Mutants, Sleepwalker) will transport you to another dimension, filled with crashed spaceships, fast-talking aliens, and ageless wonders.                                                  (Joe's Pick) The Last Siege from IMAGE COMICS written by Landry Q. Walker with art by Justin Greenwood                                  A tale of blood, desperation, and loss. New York Times bestselling author LANDRY Q. WALKER joins artist JUSTIN GREENWOOD for an all-new ONGOING SERIES—THE LAST SIEGE! Spaghetti Western storytelling meets Game of Thrones atmosphere in this gritty medieval war story, as a mysterious stranger arrives at a castle overrun with brutal soldiers bent on usurping the throne of the rightful heir—an 11-year-old girl. An action-packed, genre-twisting epic, THE LAST SIEGE begins!                 (Brian's Pick) The Magic Order from IMAGE COMICS written by Mark Millar with art by Olivier Coipel                                     We live in a world where we’ve never seen a monster, and The Magic Order is the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Magic meets the mob in THE MAGIC ORDER, as five families of magicians—sworn to protect our world for generations—must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day, they live among us as our neighbors, friends, and co-workers, but by night, they are the sorcerers, magicians, and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness…unless the darkness gets them first. MARK MILLAR's first NETFLIX comic book, drawn by the incredible OLIVIER COIPEL (Amazing Spider-Man, Thor).                                                       (Rebekah's Pick) The Weatherman from IMAGE COMICS written by Jody Leheup with art by Nathan Fox                                                 Nathan Bright had it all: an awesome girlfriend, a kickass dog, and a job as the number one weatherman on terraformed Mars. But when he’s accused of carrying out the worst terrorist attack in human history—an event that wiped out nearly the entire population of Earth—Nathan becomes the most wanted man alive and a target of a manhunt that spans the galaxy. But is Nathan truly responsible for such a horrific crime? And why can’t he remember? Writer JODY LEHEUP (SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER!), artist NATHAN FOX (DMZ, HAUNT, Dark Reign: Zodiac), and colorist DAVE STEWART (Hellboy, RUMBLE) present a full-throttle, widescreen science fiction epic about the damage we do in the name of justice and what it truly means to be redeemed…You don’t want to miss THE WEATHERMAN!

Episode #331 is a very special one as I interview two teams of high-power comics creators! Things kick off with writer Landry Q. Walker and artist Justin Greenwood from Image Comics’ new ongoing series The Last Siege. It’s described as an action-packed, genre-twisting epic, so be sure to pick it up when the first issue arrives in local comics shops this Wednesday, May 30! For more, go to this link. Then everything wraps up with my interview with the great team of creators on Cat & Mouse, a comics miniseries that has already met its goal on Kickstarter but still needs your support! I talk with writer Roland Mann, artist Dean Zachary, inker Barb Kaalberg, and colorist Kevin Gallegly. Even though they have reached their goal, there are many great Stretch Goals to be had, so be sure to pledge before this Kickstarter ends on May 31st at 12 noon! Don’t miss this fun adventure comic!

The Joy of Comics Podcast, Episode 10: Adventures at HeroesCon 2016  With HeroesCon 2016 now officially in the books and the amazing adventures we had at this year's event still swirling around in our minds, it's time to sit back, relax, and try to make sense of it all. And to do that, we (Rich, Jordan and Kevin) have gathered in a secure location and invited a special guest - Lucas Santos - to give us his take on the con as a first-year attendee. How will his experience compare to that of us grizzled con veterans? You'll have to tune in and see.   But if you're anything like us, these events are all about the comics and the creators - and we'll be discussing as many awesome artists, writers and books as one podcast can contain. We begin by taking a brief trip down HeroesCon-memory lane, and follow-up with an extensive journey up and down the wonderful weaving aisles of artists alley to chat with the likes of Jeremy Haun, Brendan Fletcher, Babs Tarr, Matt Fraction, Justin Greenwood, Rebecca Mock and more. And for the big finish, we discuss the many books we purchased in the exhibitor's area, and give you our thoughts on the ones we've managed to read so far.   Over the course of the weekend, deals were found, a lot of cosplayers were photographed, and more than a few rookie mistakes were made, but we made it out alive and very happy with this year's HeroesCon. So come along as we discuss this awesome celebration of comics. This...is the Joy of Comics!

This week, Derek and Andy W. discuss three just-released (or soon-to-be-released) titles. First, they look at Dash Shaw's new book, Doctors (Fantagraphics). They begin by comparing it to some of Shaw's other recent work, specifically last year's New School and the miniseries Cosplayers, especially in his unique use of colors. At times the color patterns are clearly a part of the story, contributing to the meaning-making that is going on, but at other times they are used more subtly and with less apparent intentions. But what fascinates the Two Guys the most is the very premise of Doctors. It's a narrative that raises some profound questions, and it's one that might even work well in other media, such as adapted for television. Next, the guys discuss the new series from Grant Morrison and Frazier Irving, Annihilator (Legendary). In this first issue, the creators set up an intriguing premise that is pure Morrison: a story concerning a writer, where his reality and his creation ultimately collide. In Annihilator you'll find black holes, drug-addled reality, orgies, and bad haircuts, and all cinematically illustrated by Irving. Finally, Andy and Derek look at the latest installment in Greg Rucka's Stumptown series, subtitled The Case of the Jack of Clubs (Oni Press). This follows the previous two volumes -- Stumptown and Stumptown: The Case of the Baby in the Velvet Case -- which were illustrated by Matthew Southworth. This time around, Rucka is working with Justin Greenwood, and the effect is quite different. Greenwood's is a brighter, less gritty style of art, and it lends itself well to the many soccer scenes that make up this first issue. In fact, the guys are uncertain about the large amount of page space devoted to the story's setup, largely revolving around soccer, and wonder if perhaps the exposition is a bit too much. Nonetheless, they trust Greg Rucka as a writer and look forward to big payoff in this third volume of his Stumptown series.

It's that time of the month for the Two Guys with PhDs…that is, it's time for the July Previews catalog! On this episode, Andy and Derek take their monthly gander at some of the great comics being solicited in Previews and due out in the next couple of months. All of the major publishers, and many, many of the smaller ones, are represented here, and the guys comment on how this is a particularly fat month when it comes to new and upcoming comics. They begin the show by looking at some of the titles being offered for this year's Halloween ComicFest, and then they get into the nitty-gritty of the catalog. Some of the titles that they highlight include Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly's The New York Four and Satoshi Kon's Opus (Dark Horse), Peter Milligan and Leandro Fernandez's The Names #1 and Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's The Wake hardcover (Vertigo/DC Comics), Will Eisner's Spirit, Vol. 2: Artist's Edition and Craig Yoe's The Worst of Eerie Publications (IDW Publishing), Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski's Copperhead #1 and Ryan Browne's God Hates Astronauts #1 (Image Comics), Gary Scott Beatly and Aaron Warner's Number One #1 (Aazurn Publishing), Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and Robert Hack's Sabrina #1 (Archie Comics), Hubert and Marie Caillou's Adrian and the Tree of Secrets and Julie Maroh's Skandalon (Arsenal Pulp Press), George Perez's Sirens #1 (BOOM! Studios), Duane Swierczynsky and Keith Burns's Ex-Con #1 (Dynamite Entertainment), Gilbert Hernandez's Bumperhead (Drawn and Quarterly), Dash Shaw's Doctors and Joe Sacco's Bumf 1: I Buggered the Kaiser (Fantagraphics), Paul Pope and J. T. Petty's Battling Boy: The Rise of Aurora West and Farel Dalrymple's The Wrenchies (First Second), Grant Morrison and Frazer Irving's Annihilator #1 (Legendary Comics), Greg Rucka and Justin Greenwood's Stumptown: The Case of the King of Clubs #1 (Oni Press), and Jorg Tittle and John Aggs's Ricky Rouse Has a Gun (SelfMadeHero). And this is just the tip of the solicitation iceberg. You really do have to listen to the entire episode to get the full scope, and warm fuzzy feelings, of this month's Previews.

This week on the podcast Derek is joined by Andy Wolverton, yet another doctor who talks about comics…and a regular reviewer on The Comics Alternative blog. They review two new titles: Dan Goldman's Red Light Properties (IDW Publishing) and issue #1 of Antony Johnston and Justin Greenwood's new Image series, The Fuse. First, the Two Guys jump into Goldman's latest work, which originally appeared in digital format through MonkeyBrain Comics. They discuss one of the book's greatest strengths, the author's handling of the human drama underlying this “horror” story — what Andy calls a mix between Ghostbusters and American Beauty – as well as Goldman's digital art and his unique approach to visual storytelling. Next, Derek and Andy turn to the first issue of The Fuse, focusing on the title's mash-up of procedural and science fiction narratives. While mixing detective stories with other genres is nothing new — Brubaker and Phillips's Fatale is perhaps the best recent example here of another such comic — Johnston and Greenword present The Fuse as something fresh, making it one of the promising new series from Image Comics.

This time I'm joined by Antony Johnston. Antony previously appeared in Decompressed 15, talking about THE COLDEST CITY. But that was in front of an audience at Game City, so we were on our best behaviour. This time we're mumbling on Skype, as is a comic creators preferred form of communication. Except passive-aggression, obv. Anyway! Antony's career as a writer is divided between his work in Games and Comic. In comics, until recently his signature work was the post-apocalyptic series WASTELAND. That may be changing, as he's recently launched two new series via Image. The first, UMBRAL is an excellent Dark Fantasy book. The second, and the subject of today's discussion is, THE FUSE, his book with Justin Greenwood, Shari Chankamma and Ed Brisson.  The Fuse is available to buy in your local comic shop, as well as digitally through comixology and direct from Image.  The show notes and study aids can be found over here.
