A music podcast where host Howard Mitnick talks with guests about the artists & albums that changed their lives.
Sam Freeman visits the Gateway to talk about the album "Dookie" by Green Day. Sam explains how, as a preadolescent in Ottawa, Canada, the alienation expressed in the album reflected his burgeoning feelings of being an outsider. And then ironically when he moved to Berlin it was that same music of alienation that helped him make friends, create art, find a girlfriend, and most importantly belong. Along the way he and Howard talk about the other titans of mid-90s California Pop-Punk and then they share songs that make them feel a satisfying feeling of being sadly in love. John Wilson stops by The Gateway to have a chat with Howard about jamming. Over ten years ago John Wilson moved to Montreal after a long career as a musician and composer and for some reason he decided to start jamming with musical naifs, Howard and friend of the podcast, Jason Friedman (Episode 25). Over the course of 90 minutes they explore the emotional and intellectual power of jamming as a tool for connection, self-discovery, and having a blast and Howard explains how those jams led to the creation of Gateway Music. Along the way they talk about scary album covers, the Godfathers of Funk, and how Pete Townsend was secretly the drummer in The Who. Howard and Tom go on to explore why they love Wilco and why Tom didn't for the longest long time. Jon Bernstein (@jonbern), writer and research editor for Rolling Stone Magazine, drops by the Gateway to talk with Howard about the increasingly popular YouTube format of "music reaction videos" - videos showing the emotional reactions of people as they listen to songs for the first time. This past summer a music reaction video documenting two twin brothers appreciating "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins went megaviral. Jon and Howard, both long-term fans of the format, were intrigued. The only difference is that Jon wrote a great article about it. Sit back and relax as they both share their own Gateway music reaction videos and they discuss what makes the videos so fascinating. Plus, Jon shares his memory of his own musical origins and even reveals his favourite (and least favourite) Backstreet Boy! On today's episode Joe Kwaczala host of the podcast "Who Cares About The Rock Hall" drops in to talk about? You guessed it, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More specifically he talks about what got him so interested in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He also explores what the Rock Hall has given him in return and why he created a podcast to talk about it. From that point forward things get very nerdy. Howard asks Joe who he thinks should already be in and then asks Joe to guess when and if some of his favourite artists will get into the Hall - including Talk Talk, Kate Bush and of course, Jonathan Richman. Keith visits the Gateway from the rich and rewarding confines of his own music appreciation podcast, The Volume Knob. The very same show that hosted Howard as a guest earlier this week. On today's episode Keith describes his adolescent appreciation of the neo-prog band Marillion and their breakthrough album "Misplaced Childhood." Howard and Keith talk about how living on separate ends of the country and with very different cultural backgrounds they both separately developed a deep infatuation with this British Band. Keith's tale is the age-old story of teenage infatuation. A pop song on the radio lures a smart and sensitive teenager into a world of sounds, feelings and ideas that helps him develop towards adulthood. However, it is also the story of how that very same development necessitates the process of moving on. Highlights of this episode include: 1. A defence of Huey Lewis & The News. 2. The attempt to map the Dungeons & Dragons concept of alignments upon rock bands like Iron Maiden and The Smiths 3. Howard's thoroughly reductive 5 minute explanation of the origins of Prog Rock. Conclusion: This one gets nerdy! Make sure you follow Keith's excellent podcast "The Volume Knob" on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at the website volumeknob.net. Upon returning to Gateway Music, Howard interviews his old friend Mark Saul about Mark's long relationship with Pink Floyd's early career album, Atom Heart Mother. Mark talks about the diverse musical influences that led him to find the beauty in this eccentric album. This leads to an exploration of the strange mixture of classical and psychedelic elements on the album. They also explore how the process of recording put tools into place that Floyd would later use to wonderful effect during their imperial phase as rock gods. As well, Mark goes on to talk about what he appreciates in a guitar solo. Lastly, Mark talks of his most recent musical passion, the button accordion. This is a big one. in the midst of a global pandemic and from the depths of his basement in NDG, Howard gets into the "way-back" machine to visit 1983 as he talks about the first album that he ever claimed as his own, "Hammer On A Drum" by Vancouver band, The Payolas. He tells the story of yet another 80s-era Canadian band that almost made it big in the U.S and the feels that he experienced as he followed the ups and downs of their career. On this fourth episode of The Quarantimes Howard finally starts to engage with the loneliness of recording and producing the shows by himself from his basement. At the end Howard announces that he is no longer committing to releasing the podcast weekly but rather as they are completed. Sandi Armstrong visits the Gateway to discuss Tom Waits, the album 'Blue Valentine" and the song on the album that she calls her own: "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis". Sandi explains why she loves his music and how she has shared this love with her children. Howard complains about Tom's genius, griping that Tom sounds too much Louis Armstrong and that Tom's world is too mannered and caricatured. Sandi patiently listens and then corrects him. They both agree, however, that Tom Waits is a unique and talented artist: a singer-songwriter who creates small stories about small people and then links them into beautiful album-long operas about outsiders. Along the way they talk about improv, negotiating difficult house party DJ situations, and why Debbie Boone's eternally saccharine "You Light Up My Life" is important to both of them. *****Spotify Playlist of songs referenced or played on the episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7LaYK68Fki7ERkzw8eKqnk?si=uiRZMIvzSkKN2JkD62MxIQ ******Check us out on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Gatewaymusicpodcast/ You can also access this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all other platforms that peddle podcasts. Poet James Hawes enters the Gateway to share his Gateway album, "Key Lime Pie" by Camper Van Beethoven. First he joins in the great Great Gateway tradition of admitting that his Gateway should probably be the Beatles but... Then he goes on to explain that as a tween he found himself an identity as a school radio d.j. This exposed him to a regular stream of music. Upon finding "Key Lime Pie" he discovered a darkly humorous text bathed in absurdist lyrics and loaded with literary references which spoke to the nascent writer inside of him.
