Close your eyes and come back in time with me to the year 2011. You're spending the night at a friend's house playing Beatles Rock Band, when an idea crosses his mind. “I saw some really creepy videos on YouTube, you guys wanna see?” says Josh. Reluctantly we come to the conclusion that since we are all in the same room for the night, it would be fun to try and freak ourselves out. And with that we dove down the YouTube rabbit hole, eventually landing on the king of all internet creatures, Slenderman. But how did this faceless being become the face of internet creepypasta? Under the gun for material to complete Rubber Soul, the Beatles dusted off an old Quarrymen-era tune, sprinkled a bit of Buck Owens on it, and gave Ringo his vocal turn with #207, "What Goes On." An earlier version was considered as a single to follow up "Please Please Me," but it found it's home as a nice bit of album filler in 1965. Featuring nice guitar and bass work, a solid vocal, and done in one take, it lands as not a bad song, not a great song, but good enough. #206, "A Taste of Honey," is the first time we get a sample of what John called Paul's "granny music $h!t." Everyone turns in a nice understated performance for a song that was sure to win over the parents of their target demographic, but is it too syrupy for its own good? And for a song with so many well known and unknown covers, how does it stack up? Joining us this week to discuss these songs is music writer Brett Milano (Boston Globe, OffBeat Magazine, Rhino Records), who entered the Fabs' orbit as lead writer and content creator for The Beatles Rock Band game. We talk about learning what a band should look, feel, and act like, take a peek behind the curtain at the creation of the Beatles Rock Band, including being in the same room as a copy of of mythical, mysterious, holy grail, "Carnival of Light." Elsewhere we touch on long lost tracks from Billie Dee Williams (the OG Lando Calrissian), finally touch on the Monkees, Jonathan and Julia shamelessly shill for beer again, and we introduce a brand new feature....BLOOPERS! Spectral stereo remixes of the Beatles have quickly become a favorite amongst the WTWF crew for listening to the Beatles in new and interesting ways. This week, Tom Brennan joins the show as we discuss the technology, its origins (Capitol's "Duophonic" stereo, "Out of Phase Stereo" isolations), how it found its way into products including "The Beatles: Rock Band" and "The Beatles - Live at the Hollywood Bowl" and the amazing things the community can do with tools available to everyone!
Richard Rapkowski finally makes it to the Gateway to discuss how he taught himself how to play the drums by playing Beatles Rock Band. However, the episode is so much more. Richard and Howard review their shared history of growing up together as first cousins and neighbours. They share some of their formative favourites like The Monks and Violent Femmes. They also review the music that Richard's parents enjoyed and discuss how it impacted on their own musical development. Part 2 of my conversation with guest Gary Barth as we discuss the concertgoing experience. Show notes: - Recorded in Gary's car on the way to the show - Driving before and briefly after an Iron Maiden concert at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA - Jay: Big fan of club shows - Like to get up close to the stage - The downside of theater shows - Some shows are made for big venues - Getting your face melted by Ty Segall - Demographics: We're the target market for Maiden, but often among the oldest when seeing newer acts - If you were 30 when you saw Maiden during their early days, you're pushing 70 now - Still weird to be "the old guy" - No institutional knowledge of what came before - Gary: Raised our kids on the Beatles - Jay: My kids love Taylor Swift; at least she writes her own songs - I listen to a lot of pop these days when I drive the girls around - Making the kids listen to your music - Gary: We played Beatles Rock Band a lot as a family - Will we still go to rock shows as senior citizens? - No such thing as guilty pleasures - We both love the Bee Gees - Jay: Traded the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack for a Zeppelin album - Reconciled with my disco-loving childhood - People who watch a show through their smart phones - Making Gary self-conscious about phone use at concerts - Artists who ban cellphone use at shows - After the concert - We paid extra to park in a lot to get out earlier - High energy, over-the-top stage show - Saw some people with toddlers - Fun to go to a big show with friends - Gary's next show: Raconteurs in September - Jay's next show: Sleater-Kinney in October - Gary plays about 20 shows a year Completely Conspicuous is available through the iTunes podcast directory. Today's guest on the show is Marc Flury. Marc worked at Harmonix before leaving to form his own company, Drool. Alongside his partner and Lightning Bolt alum Brian Gibson, they've spent the last few years working on the upcoming rhythm violence game, THUMPER. The all caps are mine, but entirely necessary. As an American who now lives in Seoul, Marc has a unique perspective on the game dev scene in the country, and the type of games people love to make and play. Spoilers: it's not just Starcraft. We talk about the development of Thumper, the pain of programming and the highs and lows of working in such a small team. We also hit on his time working on Beatles Rock Band, meeting Yoko Ono, being bullied away from arcade machines in an Italian resort, the beautiful systems of Pikmin and his spiritual and psychedelic awakening as the host of The Space Show. Space is not only high, it's low. It's a bottomless pit. Get Back to Talking Games! This week Matt and Huw take The Long and Winding Road that is video games together without a Little Help From My Friends. It's All Too Much as they chat about Matt's discovery of the musical marvel that is Beatles Rock Band and how it's nigh on impossible to find any peripherals for it, anywhere! Meanwhile, Huw takes us on a journey in his (not so) Yellow Submarine into the aquatic survival game Subnautica. Rounded off with a few news items you should probably check out this week's show, because Tomorrow Never Knows what's round the corner. Okay, I think that was enough Beatles song titles worked into this, don't you? Talking Games is looking for diverse, talented and interesting people to lend their voice to the show. If you think you've got something to say about games that isn't already being covered email us at games@talkingcomicbooks.com and tell us why you'd like to be part of the team!

With busy schedules this week, Wash and I at BGGCon as we speak, and Ryan Lesser spending his weekends shipping High Heavens to his Kickstarter backers, this episode is a little shorter than normal. This week's show is all about music games. We've known Dan, David, and Kirk for a long time and it was a blast to have an excuse to hang out with them and record the show.
