Send us a textIn this episode of The Incubator, Ben and Daphna speak with Dr. Scott Duncan, Division Chief at the University of Louisville, about the critical importance of medical billing and coding in neonatology. The discussion explores how accurate documentation and thoughtful use of codes can impact everything from individual reimbursement to hospital funding and staffing. Dr. Duncan explains the key differences between critical care and intensive care coding, highlighting how misunderstanding these definitions can lead to missed opportunities for appropriate billing. The conversation also delves into the complexities of CPT and ICD-10 codes, bundled versus unbundled services, and how Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) systems influence hospital revenue. They discuss how proper coding affects downstream resources, including staffing, and why the financial viability of neonatal units depends in part on getting this right. Dr. Duncan reflects on the need for better education in this area, particularly for trainees, and shares practical resources and upcoming initiatives aimed at helping clinicians build this essential skill set. This episode offers an eye-opening look at a topic often overlooked in medical training, but vital to the sustainability of neonatal care. As always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. You can also contact the show through Instagram or Twitter, @nicupodcast. Family conflict doesn't simply disappear once wealth is on the table. It seems family fortunes, and more specifically the transfer of these fortunes to the next generation, can be the source of conflict if not handled correctly. As the world grows more complex, how can you stop wealth transfers from dividing your family? Scott Duncan, Wealth Planner in Julius Baer's International Advisory Team, joins the Beyond Markets Podcast to explain this and more.
I never worked with my guest today, but we did meet at the EXGO Reunion in Cancun in 2010. He worked for Club Med from March 1995 to January 2002 and then went back from 2010 to 2013. His first season was in Club Med Turks and Caicos in 1995 as Landsports. He's a graduate of Auburn University and has called eight countries and twenty cities home over the past twenty-six years. Please help me welcome, from Atlanta, Georgia, Scott Duncan, AKA, Scotty D! A friend of Scott's had been to Club Med on vacation and told him all about it. Scott applied and drove to Club Med Sandpiper from Georgia, for his interview. In addition to landsports, Scott also worked as a Waterski G.O. and in Sandpiper from 2010-2013 he was in Sales. He has worked with CDVs such as Gregg Snyder, Howard McCarley, Stephan Roeina, Toutoune, Kevin Batt, Hammer, Houria Osmani, and Lionel Pirotte. My favorite story of his would be when he was thrown into water aerobics during his first season in Turks without ever having taught it or seen it! After Club Med, Scott worked for The Peninsula Hotel in NYC, the Ritz Carlton in Las Vegas, and the Four Seasons Resorts in the Maldives. Scott shares an amazing story where he met a member of “Canadian Royalty” (no spoilers, sorry!) when he was working for one of those hotels. We talk about the people he worked with, the things he misses the most about Club Med, and so much more. Please enjoy this interview with Scott!! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. Our learners often complain that they do not get good feedback from us as faculty. Providing actionable, formative feedback in real-time while providing patient care in a busy inpatient setting is hard. This week we talked with three neonatologists who asked us to help them to give feedback better. Listen to them describe the two formative feedback models they are now using in a busy NICU setting. Their stories provide lessons that are applicable broadly to how we engage learners across the HSC campus. Do you have any questions or comments about Faculty Feed? Guest OverView This week's guest is meteorologist, Scottish Highlander, Gaelic speaker, and bag-piper Scott Duncan. Now London-based Scott grew up in the wilds of northern Scotland. Inspired by Scotland's dramatic natural habitat he developed a love for nature and especially climate. That led him to study meteorology at Reading Uni and Oklahoma University and propelled him to be one of the most talked-about climate communicators, resulting from his imaginative and creative application of climate pattern data visualization on Instagram and his own website. In this episode, Scott recounts his early years, the role of family, and the impact of growing up in such an inspiring environment. Developing an expansive world view of climate at a young age, Scott discusses his path to becoming a climate communicator, his intuitive interest and appreciation for the power of storytelling, and how this has transformed how he tells the story of climate. Scott provides a refreshingly simple explanation of the issues our planet faces, at the poles and beyond, he explains how he deals with activists, deniers, and trolls, and why he focuses on reputable data sources to navigate the politically charged field of climate communications. We discuss the decade of action, the expectations of the upcoming COP26 in Glasgow in November and Scott provides insight into what the target numbers mean. He also provides examples of the extreme weather patterns we are experiencing. I think you will leave this episode more grounded, informed, and inspired. Welcome to Shaping The Future - in this episode, I am talking with meteorologist Scott Duncan, about how weather data is used to inform both the public and the organisations we rely on to insure us against the worst of life's low-probability high-impact events.. We also discuss the recent Storm Alex that struck parts of western and southern Europe, in the context of frequency & extremity, as well as how the findings of meteorology can be used to alert those people who are in the path of future storms. It can be easy to exist in a bubble of climate communications and forget that the vast majority of people have no idea of why and what we should be doing to prepare for and prevent the worst of future impacts. The climate crisis means that many parts of the world will become uninsurable and this could be more closer to home than we think. Greater literacy in critical weather and climate science will help forge a better dialogue between people who are going to be impacted and the companies that realise future insurance is no longer viable. I have added the links in notes so that you can follow Scott on Twitter and Instagram. Thank you for listening - please do subscribe to Shaping The Future on any of the major podcast channels, or you can also listen on Youtube. The next interview in the series will be with author Professor Sarah Bridle at the University of Manchester about her recent book ‘Food and Climate Change Without The Hot Air' - a really worthwhile source of information for anyone interested in the links between food and climate emissions.
