Lee Harris, the founder and guitarist of the successful band ‘Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secret' was our first interview guest almost two years ago. We had an exciting conversation back then and we knew we wanted to invite him back to our podcast. Now, 25 episodes later, the time has finally come, Lee Harris is back!Together with Phil Salathé, in this episode we talk about Lee's youth, his own career as co-manager and guitarist of the band ‘Ian Dury and the Blockheads' and the musical development of Pink Floyd between the years 1967 and 1972, an era they cover with the 'Saucers'.Lee also gives us a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the band, describing the conditions under which the songs were chosen and why Echoes came so late in the setlist.Look forward to a lively conversation between two full-blooded musicians and some great and nerdy insights...(On a personal note, to our knowledge Pink Floyd performed 'The Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' four times during the UK leg of their British Winter Tour in 1970.)

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the start of the North America tour in 1975, we present a new and exciting episode of the Fingal's Cave podcast. In more than 2 hours we discuss Pink Floyd's so-called transition period between 1974 and 1975, often derided as the band's creative low point. But even though there were many late decisions, sound problems, mishaps and - to be frank - a certain amount of laziness, these three tours, which started in Colmar (France) on 22nd June and ended in Knebworth (UK) on 5th July, offered plenty to talk about. From one of the finest Dark Side of the Moon shows in Bristol to a total disaster in Knebworth, Pink Floyd went through a rollercoaster ride in these 380 days, defining their own future by road-testing new material and setting the stage (no pun intended) with stunning new visuals, including the birth of Mr. Screen. After several weeks of preparation, we are proud to bring you an in-depth chat that even the dedicated Pink Floyd fan will learn something from, we promise! Our yt-channel: https://www.youtube.com/@Fingals_Cave_PodcastMost important shows:1974-06-22 Colmar (tour start)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AFkERLrJQU1974-11-19 Stoke on Trent (British Winter Tour 74 bootleg)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F2-bSdNHTY1974-12-14 Bristol (Best Dark Side Set)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlFm7s-Gypc1975-04-26 Los Angeles (Millard recording)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4clpGEnZz0o1975-06-09 Landover (Best ‘75 Dark Side Set)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8iLvc72N1w1975-06-17 Uniondale (Great show)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPzaR1PcUDI1975-06-28 Hamilton (Superb recording)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAR5x2LGHO0Videos:1975-04-27 Los Angeles (8mm)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NYLy9NqlAY1975-06-09 Landover (8mm)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH1mGiSmbRk1975-06-26 Montreal (8mm)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb7lxh_9eOk1975-06-28 Hamilton (8mm)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSXZMFq_Msk1975-07-05 Knebworth (video)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Oi5BCXeV4A

Soooo... Last week we were glazing pretty hard about our boys in The Pink Floyd... but this week... the glazing has come to a hard stop. Maybe it's the weird production choices, maybe it's the awesome album cover for a below average Floyd album, maybe it's the fact that we JUST listened to Meddle, in which they perfect what they were trying to accomplish here with the "Atom Heart Mother" suite. Maybe we've become cynical and jaded. Either way, if you want to hear us be critical about Floyd for once, this is the episode for it! Sorry in advance to all the Atom Heart Mother die hards... On this, our 20th episode, we speak with a person who has chosen to go by the pseudonym of "Mick the Hat", and when you listen you'll certainly understand why. One of our favorite things to do on this podcast is to interview people who have knowledge that no one else in the world possesses, and who can shed light on some of the most legendary events in the history of Pink Floyd. Mick the Hat is one of those people. For anyone interested in the saga of Pink Floyd live recordings and vinyl bootlegs, you won't want to miss a minute of Mick the Hat's recollections, as elicited by podcast producer and interviewer Ian Priston. His tales of BFI busts gone wrong, of taping some of the most beloved shows in Pink Floyd history, and of dealing with some of the quirkiest characters out there, are one of a kind revelations that you won't hear anywhere else.

We discuss exciting topics like the pros and cons of the album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”, the world tour 1987-1989 and why Echoes was only played in the first 12 shows. We talk about the musicians on stage, irritating lyrics and why we think that the 1994 world tour is unfortunately just a boring version of the 1987 tour. Finally, we discuss the remix version of AMLOR and what we like about this release.

Pink Floyd's 1967 concerts were raw, fast and unpredictable musical experiences. Many concert setlists are incomplete or missing. The best-surviving evidence exists in snippets of film, two BBC radio sessions, photographs and three audience recordings captured between September and November 1967. In this episode, we reflect on this essential cluster of amateur recordings: who taped them and how, what to listen for, the degree to which they reflect Syd's withdrawal, what's missing and the possibilities for the existing tapes and new discoveries. First off, f*ck x-mas, then let's remember one of the greatest musicians of our time- without shying away from the fact that his murderer, like J & K.M., listened to Pink Floyd on acid (and it wasn't "Ummagumma", it was "Atom Heart Mother")- but we didn't kill a cultural icon! After our respectful memorial celebrating the dead Beatle, we seamlessly transition into sports. Now let's talk about the greatest American documentary filmmakers since the 1960's. It only gets worse from here... Then we eventually get to some poetry. You're welcome. And dead serious- if you actually try to donate to Axl Rose, make sure it's going to the old pug in the Quarter and not the old rocker. Speaking of old, K.M. is incapable of remembering anything. Don't worry, J. Andrews saves the cast by reading a love poem. This is a literary podcast. We want to onomatopoeia on you! What are we talking about? Dirty pleasures? If your guilty pleasure is poetry, then listen til the end- otherwise- unsubscribe.

Syd Barrett: “An amazingly attractive, energetic, sparkly boy goes the wrong way in life and is lost”Rosemary Breen knew her brother Syd Barrett better than anyone. They were inseparable as children, and in later years, Rosemary cared for Syd between the early 1980s and his untimely death in 2006. A "bright cookie" and kind, Syd had an unusual brain, and Rosemary became the single individual he could cope with.Rosemary spoke to Ian Priston on 16 September 2023 to get things on record and encourage youngsters who look up to Syd to carefully think about why and how things happened to him. Rosemary eloquently sums up how Syd wanted to play with the other members of Pink Floyd and with sound. He neither sought celebrity nor understood it. When being in the band ceased to be fun, Syd left.Syd Barrett expressed his true self through his art. After he returned to Cambridge, Syd produced some memorable artworks when he was in a good frame of mind. He had many ideas and would paint enormous canvases, and there was often one in progress when Rosemary visited. The two used to go on days out. On one occasion, Rosemary and Syd were in central Cambridge, and Syd stopped and feared crossing a road because he felt compelled to get a painting out of his head and onto a canvas. For Syd, art was about much more than simply being creative; according to Rosemary, the process fulfilled a need and was vital. The interview covers some serious topics, but there is also humour. For example, Rosemary explains how Syd was “Mr. DIY”. Talking about Syd Barrett's lyrics, Rosemary says, "They make me giggle. He was a clown and was joking. Life was a joke. If anybody took him seriously, he just would giggle away."

The Darkness a dévoilé la bande-annonce de son prochain documentaire Welcome To The Darkness. Known to Pink Floyd fans for his collaboration on Atom Heart Mother and Music from the Body, Ron has an extensive discography, a massive collection of adjustable spanners, and nearly eight decades' worth of stories, aphorisms, insights, and witticisms. In a wide-ranging conversation with Phil Salathé and Nils Zehnpfennig, Ron discusses the past and future of Atom Heart Mother, his work for film and television, and the role of the subconscious and humor in art. Along the way Ron speaks of his love for Coleman Hawkins and Edgard Varèse, and recounts how "unintentional brinksmanship" had him facing the wrath of two thousand Scots. Please find the unedited video here: https://youtu.be/AqGtp7rcT_g

++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ "Astronomy Domine", "Interstellar Overdrive", "Arnold Layne", "Remember a Day", "Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun", "Jugband Blues", "Careful With That Axe Eugene", "Grantchester Meadows", "Atom Heart Mother", "Summer '68", "Fat Old Sun", "Echoes", "One of these Days", "San Tropez", "Breathe", "Time", "The Great Gig in the Sky", "Money", "Us and Them", Any Colour You Like", "Eclipse", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (alle Parts)", "Welcome To The Machine", "Have A Cigar", "Wish You Were Here"

The 1977 Animals “Veterans Tour” – life on the road with Pink Floyd We are delighted to introduce Chris Cockram in this episode of Fingals Cave. Chris worked as a tour technician and tour manager for super bands such as U2, Queen, Rolling Stones, Elton John, and Pink Floyd in 1977. Chris tells some great new stories about working closely with David Gilmour and Nick Mason and gives a vivid sense of what became infamously known amongst the roadies as the “Veterans Tour”.We discuss increasing tension in the band, Roger and David's audio recordings, technical problems that almost led to catastrophic consequences, and the famous Montreal 1977 spitting incident. Chris is additionally the author of the fascinating book, ‘We Skipped the Lite Fandango'. In this episode, we talk to Pink Floyd recording pioneer Derek T.Derek, whose love of the band began when he listened to the live sides of Ummagumma in 1969, was present at many significant Pink Floyd gigs in their heyday. He shares his concert memories with our host, Ian Priston, and explains the 1970s vinyl bootleg industry and attempts to stamp it out. Derek took over a tiny record shop in Marlborough Court, just off Carnaby Street, London, in 1973, where he would encounter various classic titles such as The Best of Tour '72. At one point you'll hear Derek talking about an Elvis impersonator at the Crystal Palace concert on 15 May 1971, and this did indeed happen. Derek also acknowledges the loss of his good friend, Syd Barrett specialist Bernard White, in tragic circumstances. Later he talks about his experience of Knebworth '75 and going to the 1977 Wembley concerts. The enigmatic Jesus Jellett is mentioned and Derek explains racing driver James Hunt's connection to The Wall shows. Derek then moves on to his key Pink Floyd archival achievement, filming excerpts of multiple The Wall concerts in England and Germany in 1980 and 1981 from different vantage points on a Super 8 camera. Derek subsequently edited his footage highlights together to form a complete concert production. We would like to thank Vincenzo Gatti for his work on mastering the sound.

Episode 30 Music of the Body   Playlist   The Heart Orphx, “Biorhythm” from The Living Tissue (2001 Hands Productions). Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey, modular and analog synthesizers, software, location recordings and feedback circuits. Includes the modified sounds of the heartbeat, breath and synthesizer. The Brain Alvin Lucier, “Music for Solo Performer” from Music for Solo Performer (1982 Lovely Music). Performance by Pauline Oliveros. Percussion Arrangement, Ron Kuivila; Engineers, Jack Stang, Nicolas Collins; Producer, Alvin Lucier. Recorded January 21-24, 1982 at Nickel Recording, Hartford, CT. Reportedly, the first musical work in history to use brain waves to generate sound (whereas the sonification of brain waves has been around since the 1930s). Composed by Lucier during the winter of 1964-65 and first performed with the help of physicist Edmond Dewan on May 5, 1965. Lucier had the brilliant idea to let the amplified brain wave signals create music through sympathetically vibrating various percussion surfaces and objects through loudspeakers. For this recording, Nic Collins also created a number of voltage-driven solonoids to act as “electric drumsticks” to play various metal instruments and small drums, all controlled by the Alpha waves generated by the brain of the performer. Pierre Henry, “Levitation” from Mise En Musique Du Corticalart De Roger Lafosse (1971 Philips). Live improvisations recorded Feb. 15-21, 1971 by Pierre Henry from Roger Lafosse's Corticalart device, allowing to transcribe the electric cortex waves in electronic signals for further raw manipulations. The Human Voice Orphx, “Mother Tongue” from The Living Tissue (2001 Hands Productions). Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey, modular and analog synthesizers, software, location recordings and feedback circuits. Includes the modified sounds of the human body and voice. Ben Patterson, “A Fluxus Elegy” (excerpt) from A Fluxus Elegy (2006 Alga Marghen). Limited edition of 345 copies. Patterson, a double bass player, was an original member of the Fluxus movement of the 1960s. This elegy to Fluxus artists consists of the initials of the names of key Fluxus artists, encoded into basic Morse code and then performed using a Yamaha DJX keyboard (voice pattern setting) connected to a Digitech JamMan Looper (over-dub setting) connected to a Eurorack MX 602 mixer. The Breath, Lungs Johan Timman, “The Windpipe” and “The Lungs” from Trip Into the Body (1981 Fleet). Composed, performed, recorded, and mixed by Johan Timman. Timman had a massive private studio consisting of Moog synthesizers, some privately made, plus other electronic music instruments. Brands represented include Moog, Oberheim, Roland, EMS, and Synton (vocoder). His was an elaborate analog studio on the eve of the digital revolution. Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, “Body Transport” from Music From the Body (1970 Harvest). Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, guitars, body sounds, field recordings, tape composition. Geesin was a composer and tape music technician who worked with Pink Floyd on 1970's Atom Heart Mother. He collaborated with Waters on this set of songs inspired by the human body, the most tuneful of which were used in a 30-minute television production. The rest of the material not used for the TV production included this piece for clapping, vocal and other sounds. Endoscopy Teresa Rampazzi, “Musica Endoscopica” (1972/2008 Die Schachtel) in entirety. Teresa Rampazzi was an Italian pianist and composer of electronic music. After meeting John Cage in 1958 she devoted herself to developing electronic music. In 1965 she founded the Gruppo NPS (Nuove Proposte Sonore) in Padua which also experimented with computer music. This is a soundtrack made in 1972 for a documentary film called Gastroscopia. Rampazzi wove the actual sound of “gloomy sound blocks and textures of convulsive rhythms” into electronic works for each stage of the digestive system. The sequence is named after sections of the digestive tract: Fibre Ottiche, Laringe, Stomaco, Esofago, Stomaco, Esofago, Stomaco, Stomaco Più Esofago, Stomaco Operato, Duodeno Normale, Duodeno Patologico, and Papille Di F. E Altro (optical fibres).   The Archive Mix—where two tracks are played at the same time to see what happens. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Nasal Retentive Caliope Music (1968 Verve). Johan Timman, “Heart” from Trip Into the Body (1981 Fleet). Composed, performed, recorded, and mixed by Johan Timman.   Other Notes Opening track: Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, “Our Song” (excerpt) from Music From the Body (1970 Harvest). Roger Waters and Ron Geesin, guitars, body sounds, field recordings, tape composition.   Also heard from time to time, excerpts from Auscultation Of The Heart (1966 London) by J. B. Barlow* & W. A. Pocock, narration by Stephen O'Reilly. A medical reference recording with discussion and examples of various heartbeats and pathologies. “Provided as a service to medical students as a part of the Medical School Program of Warner-Chilcott Laboratories.”   I encourage you to pick up a copy of Alvin Lucier's Music 109: Notes on Experimental Music. This is the most digestible and thoughtful book about the avant garde since Cage's Silence and it is grounded by Lucier's real-world experience teaching and mentoring musicians for his many years at Wesleyan.   Opening and closing sequences were voiced by Anne Benkovitz.

Mark talks about the diverse musical influences that led him to find the beauty in this eccentric album. This leads to an exploration of the strange mixture of classical and psychedelic elements on the album. They also explore how the process of recording put tools into place that Floyd would later use to wonderful effect during their imperial phase as rock gods. As well, Mark goes on to talk about what he appreciates in a guitar solo. Lastly, Mark talks of his most recent musical passion, the button accordion. I'm PC and this is the VE : Richard Dawson: Apples And Oranges Richard Dawson, at the height of his Hogan's Heroes fame, with the psychedelic novelty record, "Apples And Oranges." Funny...didn't Pink Floyd releaase a single with the same title at about the same time? (Pink Floyd: Apples And Oranges, est & fade) ....and so, my eureka moment....struggling with a theme for this week's Vinyl Experience...it's right there...like apples and oranges...some songs can share the same title, but be very different..case in point--let's stay with with Pink Floyd, and a cut from their 1970 album "Atom Heart Mother," called "If, " and follow that with a very different group, song of the same title, and similar emotional tenor...can you guess who it will be ... Pink Floyd: If Bread: If The VE with Bread, and Pink Floyd...two groups as different as apples and oranges, and two different, but relatable songs with the common title of "If." See how this works. OK.. Let's stay in the early 70's....1974 specifically, when two songs, both on Atlantic Records, shared the same title, and the distinction of being two of the year's bigest hits... Roberta Flack: Feel Like Making Love Bad Company: Feel Like Making Love The VE....Feel Like Making Love, by Bad Company, and Roberta Flack. As different as Apples and Oranges...let's keep it going , two entirely differnt eras of rock and roll, but two teen-idol bad boys, each debuting with a song called "Runaway." Bon Jovi: Runaway Del Shannon: Runaway The VE, Apples and Oranges...the songs Runaway by Del Shannon ion 1961, and Bon Jovi, who was an infant the year that came out, but shot to stardom in '83 with his tune. How about a bonus "Runaway" ?! Jefferson Starship: Runaway The VE....same title, different songs. Like apples and oranges...or paintings and.... photographs... Ringo Starr: Photograph Def Leppard: Photograph The VE....I know you've got the hang of this by now Cars Bye Bye Love Everly Brothers: Bye Bye Love Apples and oranges, and Cars and Everly Brothers, "Bye Bye Love," on the VE. There are so many twin title songs, we'll have to do a sequel hour some time....but for now, just time for another couple of sets...this one is Radiohead's most covered tune Radiohead: High And Dry Rolling Stones: High And Dry The Rolling Stones first attempt at a country-blues tune, and with fine harmonica by Mick jagger, on Aftermath's "High And Dry," and Radiohead, wit thie lonesome cowboy ballad "High ANd Dry," a tune Thom Yorke dislikes, but artists as diverse as Sugarland and Jamie Cullum, adore...they'e done their own versions...apples and oranges indeed. Let's wrap it up with some greasers, and the original skinny kid singer from the neighborhood.... Five Satins: In The Still Of The Night Frank Sinatra: In the Still Of The Night And that's the VE. As simple as The Five Satins, as sophisticated as Sinatra.....

This week, we take on Stanley Kubrick’s most controversial film, 1971’s A Clockwork Orange. Largely considered an unfilmable novel, Kubrick’s uncompromising vision and incredible visual eye are on full display - and his problematic style of directing. It’s not a stretch to say this is the moment that made Kubrick at best negligent, and at worst, a monster. Yet Malcolm McDowell’s charm is so captivating, and the film’s style so stunning, that somehow you can’t look away.
