As markets continue on a dynamic trend, fixed income portfolio manager Crista Caughlin discusses the economy and factors that drove markets in the first quarter of 2024. In addition, the reemergence of a more typical correlation pattern between stocks and bonds, getting central banks off the sidelines, and the concern that markets may be being too complacent. Key points from this episode: Global growth improving, inflation moderating, and earnings relatively strong In Canada, growth has improved although consumption remains weak when compared to the U.S. Moving with caution: strong data has begun to cause central banks to be cautious around timing of interest rate cuts—they want to be confident higher inflation is in the rear view mirror Strong equity markets—a continuation of the 2023 technology-focused businesses doing particularly well, especially if they have a tie in to AI or semiconductors Too much complacency? We may not have seen the full impact of higher interest rates, and you can see that in some areas we are seeing continued pressure (e.g., real estate, mortgage arrears, loan delinquencies) Host: Kevin Minas, CFA, Institutional Portfolio Manager Guests: Crista Caughlin, CFA, Mawer Portfolio Manager For more details and full transcript visit: https://www.mawer.com/the-art-of-boring/podcast/quarterly-update-q1-2024-ep152 This episode is available for download anywhere you get your podcasts. -- Founded in 1974, Mawer is a privately owned independent investment firm managing assets for institutional and individual investors. Teri Henderson Tope is an internationally recognized teacher and lecturer who loves all types of applique. She is creative and full of life which shows up as she's up early and gets more done before noon than most others accomplish all day.  I meant to ask Teri about her motto “Well behaved women seldom make history, so let's make a little history”. But I think a bit of that shows through in this interview.  I love that she always finds something good about each day. I found the following paragraph on Teri's website.  She has accomplished so much! Her quilts have been exhibited in shows across the United States and in Japan, winning an award or two. Her quilts and patterns have been published in Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilter's Quarterly, The American Quilter, Keepsake Quilting and Clotilde. Teri is the Author of “Applique in Reverse” published by the American Quilter's Society. And has designed over 35 patterns for her company, Material Girl Designs. She has been a member of the Applique Society since 1998 and served 6 years on the TAS board as Marketing Chair. She is a member of The National Quilter's Society and its Columbus Ohio chapter, The Quintessential Quilting of which she served as Vice President and President, and the American Quilters Society. Teri loves to travel, teach, lecture and share her joy of applique. We talked about these two quilts during the interview. He Loves Me This is the way Teri appliques feathers   Connect with Teri. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Cindy: I have battled diarrhea for several years, and despite all kinds of stool testing and various diagnosis, I finally diagnosed myself with bile acid malabsorption. I have the classic symptoms. They put me on medication for it, and it is controlling the diarrhea, but I am wondering if I will have to take medication the rest of my life or is there a cure?   Melissa: I trying to adopt a more plant based diet but am concerned about lectins and oxalates. I reading a lot about how they are damaging and consuming a lot of them on a plant based diet can have bad health effects. Can you advise if this is a real issue and how to handle, or if this something not to worry about?   Dionna: Hey, Dr. Cabral. First, a sincere thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing what you do. After a year and a half of being so sick, your Big 5, plus the gut health lab have changed my life! I am in month 2 of the CBO Protocol. We leave for Barbados on March 29th. I will still be about a week or two from finishing the Protocol, and will not have started the Gut Finisher yet. How can I go on vacation, be able to eat, and NOT reverse all the work I've done to get better. Also, I am not a big drinker at all, but on rare occasion, I like to enjoy a cocktail. Is that even a possibility while on the protocol? I want to enjoy vacation but more importantly, not mess up everything I've worked so hard for. Thank you! You are an Earth Angel! REVISED from just a few hours ago. I just wanted to clarify that I will be staying at an All Inclusive Resort while in Barbados. I'm not sure what my food options will look like, which is the basis for my original question. Thank you   Taliitha (tah-leh-thuh, like Tabitha, she/her): Thank you for having this forum to ask questions, and for consistently sharing your knowledge. I have pigmented purpura dermatosis, biopsy confirmed, that comes and goes over most of my body. If you are not familiar, it is a type of capillaritis. Do you have any thoughts on root cause or management? For over 6 months, and currently I am taking rutin and vitamin C in the form of equilife alkalizing vitamin C (based on a research article suggesting this would be helpful), no noticeable effects. Did minerals & metals, organic acids, food sensitivity labs. I am taking DNS, DFVB, B complex, magnesium, adrenal soothe, omega-3, and non-equilife zinc/elderberry gummies, histpro and digestive enzyme. Quarterly detoxes for 1 year with a 21-day, heavy metal detox, just started the CBO protocol.   Tin: I am 15 weeks pregnant and I am taking my time to learn more about prenatal and maternity health. I’m curious what are your thoughts about Oral Glucose Tolerance Test? It usually contains 75g of sugar in the solution and taken after fasting. I'm a bit concerned about this much sugar plus the colorings added to that. My OB said this is required to test for gestational diabetes but heard that test can come out false and inaccurate. My FBS and HbA1c are all good, I take supplements and workout, so I think I have low risk. What are other alternatives for this that has less risk to my body? Thank you again for all that you do.   Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/2991 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Join us for an interview with Mike Schmitz, who shares how journaling helps him reflect on progress made through small iterative improvements. He helps people apply values-based productivity principles and systems. Highlights from the interview: 1. Quarterly planning and personal retreat process Mike details his quarterly planning process involving personal retreats, where he reviews values, intentions and systems. This clarity guides weekly and daily planning to optimize focus on high-impact work. He also explains why he doesn't create yearly goals and why they often fail for most people. 2. Weekly and daily planning Mike translates quarterly intentions into weekly plans by considering calendar events and top tasks. He then plans specific daily tasks while maintaining flexibility for changes. This process minimizes stress from an overwhelming to-do list. 3. Motivation, goals vs intentions, and living in the game Mike explains how goals often demotivate through failure or a perceived lack of progress. Intentions anchored in purpose intrinsically motivate through small wins. Journaling helps appreciate growth over time to stay motivated despite setbacks. 4. Systems thinking and continuous small improvements Seeing one's life as an interdependent system explains current results. Small iterative improvements to optimize existing systems create lasting change better than overhauling everything. Journaling supports evaluating and tweaking systems. 5. Reflection, journaling and the importance of celebration Mike's personal retreat includes reflecting on accomplishments, strengths and areas for improvement. Journaling what went well and celebrating progress boosts motivation.Self-awareness helps maintain intention-driven systems for long-term success. He also talks about creating a life-theme and using that to help guide his decisions so he is focused on the important things in his career and life. 6. Developing a growth mindset and intrinsic motivation Finding purpose beyond goals and anchoring intentions in core values intrinsically motivates perseverance. Systems already in place optimize small improvements when motivation is high. Self-reflection helps maintain a learning mindset for continuous progress. He also explains why happy people are very productive. This was one of my favorite parts of our conversation. You can learn more about Mike over at Mike Schmitz and Faith Based Productivity. He is a co-host of a podcast called Focused (Apple Podcast Link). You can also connect with him on LinkedIn. As always, if you have any questions or want to submit a guest for the podcast that you think would be amazing, just reach out to me on the Dig to Fly website, and I'll do my best to get them on. Finding suitable education options for children with special needs can be a significant challenge, even in areas with large populations. Having prior experiences of overcoming adversity can provide a foundation for resilience in parenting children with special needs. Personal growth occurs outside of the comfort zone, and embracing discomfort is necessary for progress. Stepping out of the comfort zone is essential for personal growth and success. Recognize and address any issues with authority that may hinder personal and professional development. Challenge middle-class mindset and embrace a mindset of abundance and success. Work on money mindset and embody success to attract and maintain financial abundance. Voluntary adversity can prepare individuals to handle unexpected challenges. Regularly review and set goals to track progress and make necessary adjustments. Focus on doing less but doing it better to maximize productivity and success. Embrace change and uncertainty as opportunities for growth and learning. Continuously improve resilience and adaptability to navigate life's challenges. Until Next Time…out of role!
