Our lovely guest on the podcast this week is the multi-talented Jodie King. Jodie King is a teacher, entrepreneur, and professional artist. When asked how many businesses she's spearheaded, she responds, “Started, or ran?” From managing one of Houston's premier restaurants at 23, to starting her own organic clothing company in 2004, Jodie has independently conceived, founded, and ran to epic heights three separate businesses. At 35 she felt the sudden urge to come to the canvas, and soon found it impossible to leave. Her entrepreneurial spirit neighboring that of her passion for painting, she now finds herself at her most ambitious, triumphant, and authentic evolution yet: empowering fellow artists to challenge their status quo and build creatively and financially fulfilling businesses. This week on the podcast we Jodie King and I discuss why even successful people need healing. We've been conditioned to believe that our ego is our enemy, and anyone arrogant, self-centered, or full of themselves has a BIG ego. However, that is not true. To thrive, accomplish our goals, and fulfill our dreams, we need a big ego, and that is a good thing. This week on the podcast, I'm sharing how I came to realize that my ego is supporting me, the traditional and modern view of ego, signs of healthy and unhealthy ego, and how to strengthen your ego. As we begin a new year, there is a huge shift towards self-care. And while this is a welcomed shift, it is important to understand that self-care is more than bubble baths, massages, haircuts, manicures & pedicures. Self-care is also about being able to identify your own weaknesses and areas of improvement. It's also about recognizing when you are cognitively dissonant. In this week's episode, I'm sharing my own story about recognizing my cognitive dissonance, what exactly is cognitive dissonance which is something almost everyone experiences, why we engage in cognitive dissonant behavior, and some examples of cognitive dissonant behavior. Dissonance is most painful, and we are most motivated to reduce it when one of the dissonant cognitions challenges our self-esteem (Aronson et al., 1969). In other words, it is not just any kind of inconsistency that causes dissonance, but actions or beliefs that challenge our very sense of self-worth. Oftentimes we think, "if I had more money, then I'd be happy!" And sometimes we think that if we just had more of whatever it is that we feel we're lacking, we'd be better. When looking at your own experiences, we shouldn't compare ourselves with others and use the term “other people had it worse than me.” Each person experiences trauma in their own way and heals in their own way. This week's episode features the story of Katie Burthardt and her healing journey after hitting rock bottom. My name is Katie Burthardt, I am a mom of two wonderful boys and have been married for almost 11 years. I am also an intuitive life coach with a background in Occupational Therapy. I help people find clarity, break through limiting beliefs and get unstuck so they can continue to learn and grow along their journey. My background allows me to see a person in a holistic way, in order to develop and facilitate the best plan of action to help you better function in your daily life. Looking back, I think I was a life coach long before I even knew what a life coach was or that it was my calling in life. As someone who has always longed for purpose, I knew I was put on this earth for a reason and to do something great! I have come to realize that the “something great” I was meant to do was help others in the hard moments of life. The way I know best how to help others is to love unconditionally and to shine my light, so they can shine theirs. Highlights: [4:43] Why are we here? This week, the podcast will focus on the second part interview with Rene St. Pierre III about healing and discovering yourself after drug addiction... I'm Rene. Born and raised on the North shore of Boston, I grew up surrounded by a loving family, played 3 sports, had a ton of friends and yet, still ended up addicted to opiates! Long story short...I was your typical all American kid. I had two parents, lived in a nice house in a nice neighborhood with a close knit family. From the outside looking in it looked like I had it all. Well I did but also behind those walls was a hurt little boy. I experienced trauma as most people do, and was a sensitive kid who never learned how to process his emotions. I developed coping skills to deal with the emotions and trauma which turned out to be drugs and alcohol. I spent the better half of my twenties and thirties in and out of treatment centers trying to find a cure. A way to heal. I tried it all - I did and redid the 12 steps more times than you could count and I still relapsed. I was still broken and needed a way out. About three years ago I found the solution for me. It wasn't in writing about all of my resentments , or saying I was powerless. It was about trusting and listening to my intuition which told me a long time ago this approach to treatment didn't make sense. I refused to accept I was powerless, that I was not in control of my own life, or that I would end up in one of three places-jails, institutions, or death. So I went on a journey to heal my mind, body, and soul from a holistic perspective. I did this through meditation, energy work, body work, yoga, reprogramming my subconscious beliefs, getting to the root causes, discipline, determination, surrounding myself with successful people, law of attraction, shifting my perspective, and many other healing modalities. I had the answers all along. I was the power, I had a choice. But I had to do the work. It wasn't because I was prescribed opiates 25 years ago as a senior in high school. It wasn't because that girl dumped me or I had a bad day. It was because of the underlying trauma I have lived with and just kept covering up over and over again with these substances. I finally started to do the work, and put one foot in front of the other to find the space to heal and to begin that journey to becoming whole and That's where I can help you. If the old “tried and true” 12 step method hasn't worked for you well I can relate. I can hold the space for you and teach you the tools to trust your own intuition to find your path to healing and help you find peace, comfort, and freedom within yourself.
