The Global Prosperity Movement (GPM) has always been about fostering a strong sense of community. However, as the community grew, it became increasingly challenging to maintain the same connection and engagement by accessing one Facebook group to another. Also, Facebook's recent controversies surrounding data collection and targeted advertising have raised questions about the safety and security of online platforms - not to mention the amount of ads that are often irrelevant and distracting. The solution? Give the GPM a more secure and dynamic single platform that nurtures progress, success, and engagement - thus the launch of the GPM Base. In this episode, Balazs W Kardos opens the GPM Base to unite members and streamline their Enagic operations. Balazs invested tens of thousands of dollars to integrate white-labeled software into the GPM Base to make it more than just a digital space but a hub for collaboration, learning, and growth. By transitioning to this new platform, Balazs aims to create a more organized and accessible environment for members to connect, share ideas, and access training materials. The most significant advantages are enhanced security, custom global areas, and AI features. Unlike public platforms, the GPM Base provides a private space for members to interact and share sensitive information. Now, they can communicate and collaborate without worrying about privacy concerns while having a personalized and engaging user experience. Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.Today we lead with news the economies of most major powers are in good shape and their companies are prospering. But for those who follow such things, we should note that President Biden has decided not to run in the Presidential election in November, stepping aside. The race for the Democratic nomination is now open at their convention in Chicago starting on Tuesday August 20 (NZT) even though Biden endorsed Kamala Harris.Well before then and ahead this week will be some early PMIs for July released for many key economies. Although there are no major June CPI due for release, the US's important PCE inflation data is due on Saturday NZT and that will be keenly awaited. The US will also release its first estimate of Q2 GDP on Friday and markets expect real growth there to be +2% from Q1. Good recent data might well see it above that.Canada is reviewing its policy rate on Thursday, and market now expect a -25 bps cut to 4.5%China is set to announce its policy interest rate decision this week, and it should be releasing its troubled FDI update soon, both possibly later today.Over the weekend, the big overnight news was that a "faulty channel file" from CrowdStrike took down Windows computers everywhere, including in New Zealand. Outages were widespread, including for many bank services. It was a spectacular own-goal and not a malicious strike. We have more details here. And our review shows how you can recover if you were affected.. But be careful; within hours scammers had launched new domains hoping to trick users into 'response scams'. CrowdStrike made its name fixing tech problems. Now it has caused a doozy. The echoes are lingering and may do for some time yet.And the situation isn't going to do anything for tech company valuations generally. US$13 bln CrowdStrike's share price was down -11% on Friday alone, down -18% for the week.Interestingly, China seems to have escaped the issue, largely due to its self-sufficiency policies. But it has hit Hong Kong.A new research note by the New York Fed is pointing out that since the GFC, American factory productivity improvements have stalled. Tech has been no saviour to this sector. Prior to that, large firms built innovative advances. But since even the leading firms haven't got productivity gains. They call the change a 'mystery'. Even shifting low-wage production offshore didn't have the effect of raising it. Nor competition, it seems. And all this come as their employed workforce hit record highs. In Canada, their expected May retreat in retail sales after the strong April gain came in deeper than expected. If it wasn't for good car sales, it would have been much worse. June is expected to be -0.3% lower too. Now their year-on-year gain is only +1.0%, much less than their inflation of +2.7%.Canadian producer prices rose +2.8% in the year to June, the same as for the year to May.Japanese inflation stayed at 2.8% in June, well above their central bank's upper target range. It has been consistently above 2% since April 2022. Food prices rose 3.6% in June although that was lower than the May 4.1% rate. Energy prices were up 2.4% but that is somewhat artificially high because fuel subsidies ended in May. These levels are marginally lower than analyst expectations.China has ended its internal policy meetings, the Third Plenum. As suspected, little real economic reform seems to have been on their agenda. Just more of a 'security is everything' attitude, more excessive adverbs, and a seeming turn inward. Those hoping for 'reform' and 'opening up' will have been disappointed. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.24% and unchanged from Saturday. On Wall Street, earnings season will hit a crescendo this week with over thirty companies boasting market caps exceeding US$100 bln are set to unveil their Q2 financial reports. So far, only one in seven of S&P500 companies have reported Q2 results but they have been strong. Of those most are reporting earnings growth, and more than anticipated by analysts. The price of gold will start today up just +US$3 from Saturday at US$2401/oz after Friday night's big drop.Oil prices are holding lower at just on US$78.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is just under US$82/bbl.The Kiwi dollar starts today little-changed at 60.1 USc but more than -1c over the past week. Against the Aussie we are still at 89.9 AUc. Against the euro we are also still at 55.2 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at 69 but down -90 bps for the week. The bitcoin price starts today at US$66,720 and up a minor +0.3% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been low at just on +/- 0.8%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. The book uses three core case studies, money, clothing, and construction, to explore how economic alternatives have emerged in Bolivia since the 2005 election of Evo Morales and the Movement for Socialism (MAS). The book offers a feminist critique of both the expectations of neoliberal economics, and MAS's alternatives, drawing on the perspectives and insights of indigenous women in Bolivia. Drawing on a deep engagement with place, as well as a rich theoretical and empirical contribution, the book will be essential reading across social science and humanities, as well as for anyone interested in alternatives to our current economic settlement. The impressive facts and figures in the encompassing policy document unveiled by China on Tuesday on the 10-year-old Belt and Road Initiative are a convincing illustration of the vast and tangible results achieved by the nation and its partners, and highlight the potential for the landmark vision's further growth, experts said. They made these observations as the State Council Information Office held a news conference in Beijing to issue a white paper titled "The Belt and Road Initiative: A Key Pillar of the Global Community of Shared Future".In September and October of 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the initiatives of jointly building a Silk Road Economic Belt and a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which became known as the Belt and Road Initiative.Over the past decade, the BRI has "helped to resolve global development challenges and improve the global governance system", and "has also opened up a new path for all humanity to realize modernization", the white paper said.Noting that the BRI is "a public road open to all, not a private path owned by any single party", the document said the vision "is free from geopolitical calculations"."Countries from Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania are all welcome to participate in the initiative, regardless of their political system, historical background, culture, development stage, ideology, or religious beliefs, as long as they seek common development," it said.Cong Liang, vice-chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, noted that China's total imports and exports with countries involved in the BRI reached $19.1 trillion in the 2013-22 period, registering an average annual growth rate of 6.4 percent.Speaking on the overall progress of the initiative, he noted that more than 150 countries and 30 international organizations have so far joined the BRI family.Over the past decade, the countries' efforts to jointly build the Belt and Road "have fully realized the shift from a concept to actions, and from a vision to reality".Guo Tingting, vice-minister of commerce, noted that two-way investment between China and other countries involved in the BRI totaled more than $380 billion between 2013 and 2022, among which China's outward direct investment exceeded $240 billion. These countries "have also actively invested in China and shared China's development opportunities, with a cumulative total of more than $140 billion invested in China over the past decade and close to 67,000 new enterprises set up in China", she said.Wang Yiwei, a professor at the School of International Studies and director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University of China, said that over the past 10 years, "the BRI has found the key to spur economic growth, as it catalyzes infrastructure construction, the reshaping of production chains, and negotiations on investment and trade facilitation"."Advancing poverty relief, narrowing wealth disparity and boosting effective global governance are the three major effects of the BRI's focus on infrastructure and connectivity," he said.Highlighting fruitful outcomes achieved within the BRI framework, Xu Xiujun, director of the International Political Economy Department of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of World Economics and Politics, said the initiative "has listed producing tangible benefits for the peoples in countries taking part in the BRI as one of its major goals, and their sense of gain has indeed been constantly on the rise and increasingly self-evident".He noted that as the vision has entered the stage of seeking high-quality development, it should work for more coordinated growth in connectivity among hardware and software.Beijing is set to host the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation later this month, an event that will provide a venue for a wide range of highly anticipated bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.Representatives from over 130 countries and more than 30 international organizations have confirmed their plans to attend the forum, Li Kexin, director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Department of International Economic Affairs, told reporters. China has so far held major gatherings on the BRI in 2017 and 2019.The upcoming forum "is not only the grandest event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the BRI, but also an important platform for discussing BRI cooperation", Li said, adding that the forum's detailed schedule will be released in due course.China is ready to take the upcoming forum as an opportunity to make new achievements in high-quality co-building of the Belt and Road, he added.Reporter: Zhang Yunbi

Almost every entrepreneur dreams of becoming a unicorn — a startup that reaches a $1 billion valuation. But to date in Africa there are only seven companies that have achieved that distinction. Andela, led by co-founder and CEO Jeremy Johnson, is one of them. Hear how and why Andela became such a success story and gain insights on disruptive innovation from Efosa Ojomo, director of Global Prosperity at the Christensen Institute and co-author of The Prosperity Paradox.Andela is a Nigerian company that began with a tightly focused mission to train software engineers to compete on a world stage. “The original problem statement,” Johnson explains, “is that brilliance is evenly distributed. Opportunity isn't. How do we move towards a world where those things are a little bit more uniform, where someone's potential in life has less to do with who their parents were and where they were born, and more to do with the impact they're able to create?” Andela quickly realized that the most valuable part of the business wasn't training the talent, but making it accessible. So, to connect all that brilliance with opportunities, Andela created a global talent marketplace to help companies simplify the process of hiring and working with talent from all over the world. This “market-making innovation” — creating an ecosystem for “non-consumers” — is what Efosa Ojoma believes made all the difference to Andela's success. In the case of Andela, he explains, “The brilliant talents in Nigeria are non-consumers of opportunity. They just happen to be born in a country that could not leverage what they would give to the world. Andela is creating an infrastructure that connects them to that opportunity so that they can add value to the world.” And they're doing the same for companies that face barriers to recruiting the best talent. According to Ojoma, “Unlocking this double-sided non-consumption unlocks so much value and the world becomes a better place as a result.”While many companies suffered due to the pandemic, it actually helped Andela by reinforcing the power of remote work. In just four years the company expanded from seven to 120 countries, and its leaders realized that the tricky part of global talent was the infrastructure, or lack thereof. So, they spent time and energy building a supply chain to make it easy for people to work together between countries, covering issues from payroll to compliance to taxes. “The primary driver of the business was companies coming to us and saying, ‘We want to be able to work with great talent. Can you help us? And can you make that easy? And because you trained them, we would like to work with you,'” Johnson explains.Listen to Johnson and Ojoma discuss Andela's meteoric growth, regulatory hurdles, the role of data, and how looking at your product through the lens of market creation can unlock a business's true potential.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

As geopolitical competition intensifies, we look at the future trajectory of the UK–Africa relationship. For over two decades, international conversations about Africa were dominated by Western aid and preoccupations with the Global War on Terrorism. But recently, with great and middle powers visibly competing for influence across Africa, a new layer of complexity has been added to relations. For countries such as the UK and France, knowing how and when to engage can be a challenge: both countries have chequered histories that include colonialism, centuries of trade and two-way migration, support for development and – in the UK's case – profit from slavery as well as support for its abolishment. Yet, Africa is a diverse and dynamic continent, and presents openings and opportunities to those who engage in the right way.. In this episode, Neil Melvin talks to Ted Elgar, Head of Research at the Coalition for Global Prosperity, and Simon Rynn, Senior Research Fellow for African Security at RUSI, to discuss the prospects for fruitful cooperation between the UK and Africa.

Let's see how energy usage has increased for the Western World over the last sixty years. Now, the other half of the world wants to be prosperous like us with food, cars, houses, appliances, etc. In the next fifty years, our global energy supply will have to double to make that happen. If we double the status quo, that might happen in 50 years. Trying to make it happen primarily with renewables is crazy. We need to spend a few billion on preliminary engineering studies to show how foolish our current policies and pipe dreams are. In this episode we have a debate between Kate Raworth, Bob Costanza and Eric Gòmez-Baggethun on Monetary Valuation of Nature: pragmatic conservation or unhelpful commodification? This is an edited version of a debate that took place at the Oxford Martin School in February 2023. You can find the fill video of it here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl7wSuAuKyQ&ab_channel=OxfordBiodiversityNetwork    Notes:The valuation of nature and ecosystem services in monetary units plays a central role in many forms of environmental governance, including in carbon and biodiversity markets and offsetting schemes which are increasingly under scrutiny. The idea of using monetary units to value nature has precipitated significant debate, with proponents contending that it represents a pragmatic and realist approach to accounting for the environment in decision-making processes, unlocking substantial funding for conservation, while others argue that it can lead to a commodification of nature that ultimately proves inequitable and ineffective in addressing environmental challenges. In the spirit of developing a constructive dialogue on the issue, Kate Raworth will moderate a discussion between two ecological economists, Robert Costanza and Erik Gomez-Baggethun, who will explore the debates and tensions associated with using monetary units to value nature and ecosystem services and role such valuations play in contemporary environmental governance.Kate RaworthKate is an economist focused on making economics fit for the 21st century. Author Ludwig Gartz offers a deeper look into the interest money system and the 9 automatisms (the performance without conscious thought or intentions)  that happen as a result of the interest money system.   We are witnessing these play out in our reality around us, from the movement of money from the bottom where the work is done, to the top where no work is done, the pollution of the planet, hostile competition, waste (planned obsolescence), the concentration of power into the hands of a few. We must not allow this monster to reach its full size and instead come up with workable self-sustaining and supportive systems to replace it. He also offers a workable alternative based on history. You can listen to the full fascinating discussion here:

Most African countries have fared relatively well in their responses to the coronavirus pandemic, reporting rates of infection and mortality that are far below those seen across much of Europe and the Americas. Yet Africa is expected to take a huge economic hit from the pandemic and its associated containment measures, with the African Development Bank forecasting that an additional 50 million people could be pushed into extreme poverty across the continent. Vaccination drives and economic relief packages will certainly be important to contain the damage. But according to author and researcher Efosa Ojomo, emerging-market nations should be aiming to build societies that are more resilient to economic shocks like the pandemic.  This week on Trend Lines, Ojomo joins WPR's Elliot Waldman to discuss how the concept of “market-creating innovations” can foster broad-based solutions to poverty and other social problems in the wake of the pandemic. Ojomo is the head of the Global Prosperity research group at the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation, and a co-author of “The Prosperity Paradox: How innovation can lift nations out of poverty.” Relevant Articles on WPR: Africa Is a Coronavirus Success Story So Far, If Only the World Would Notice How Africa's Surging Technology Sector Can Reach Its Full Potential Tech Giants Are Engaged in a New Scramble for Africa The Continued Relevance of Informal Finance in Development Trend Lines is produced and edited by Peter Dörrie, a freelance journalist and analyst focusing on security and resource politics in Africa. Climate Change is expected to continue disrupting food production and consumption. Over recent years pressures have intensified on everyone, from those growing food and selling it, to those paying for and eating it. Researchers are considering how we can best ensure our food supplies are sustainable and secure into the future. We look at the possible options: from local food communities and digital small-holder farming to reducing our meat consumption – and, tackling food inequality. Des Fitzgerald asks Professor Peter Jackson and Dr Matthew Davies how we might best ensure that everyone is well fed. Peter Jackson is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Sheffield. He is also the Co-Director of the University of Sheffield Institute for Sustainable Food which aims to find dynamic solutions to the challenges of food security and sustainability by drawing on the expertise of researchers across the sciences, social sciences and the arts and humanities. He works on social geography, cultural geography, consumption, identity, families and food. Further information can be found here: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/sustainable-food Dr Matthew Davies is Associate Professor at University College London. He is based at the Institute for Global Prosperity which has coordinated an AHRC funded partnership for Prosperity and Innovation in the Past and Future of Farming in Africa (PIPFA). He has been engaged in rethinking the role of small-holder farmers in the future of food production. He also works on a range of topics on environment, society and prosperity in eastern Africa. Details of his research can be found here: https://md564.wordpress.com/ Professor Des Fitzgerald is a New Generation Thinker based at the University of Exeter. You can find a new podcast series Green Thinking: 26 episodes 26 minutes long in the run up to COP26 made in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, part of UKRI, exploring the latest research and ideas around understanding and tackling the climate and nature emergency. Professor Dame Henrietta L. Moore and Professor Sir Charles Godfray discuss how we can rebuild new economies in a way that ensures global prosperity. The recently published Dasgupta Review has made a strong call for the fundamental rebuilding of economic models in ways that inherently value Nature. These are welcome findings, coming at a time when existing economic structures, extractive systems and patterns of consumption are eroding ecological resilience and exceeding planetary limits. Yet the imperative for new economies that value biodiversity and ecosystem health as foundational for human wellbeing leaves us with a host of challenges and opportunities centred on how we may best build alternative economic infrastructures in inclusive and sustainable ways. This endeavour is unavoidably bound up with questions of how different communities understand social and ecological prosperity and how this should be researched and measured. Grounded in the innovative research of the Institute for Global Prosperity at UCL, this discussion between Professor Dame Henrietta L. Moore and Professor Sir Charles Godfray takes stock of how research traditions within the social sciences that are attuned to the diversity of human livelihoods, value systems and collaborative research methods are of urgent necessity for designing new socio-natural economies and planetary prosperity for all.

Working Out Desire: Women, Sport, and Self-Making in Istanbul (Syracuse UP, 2020) examines spor merakı as an object of desire shared by a broad and diverse group of Istanbulite women. Sehlikoglu follows the latest anthropological scholarship that defines desire beyond the moment it is felt, experienced, or even yearned for, and as something that is formed through a series of social and historical makings. She traces Istanbulite women's ever-increasing interest in exercise not merely to an interest in sport, but also to an interest in establishing a new self—one that attempts to escape from conventional feminine duties—and an investment in forming a more agentive, desiring, self. Working Out Desire develops a multilayered analysis of how women use spor merakı to take themselves out of the domestic zone physically, emotionally, and also imaginatively. Sehlikoglu pushes back against the conventional boundaries of scholarly interest in Muslim women as pious subjects. Instead, it places women's desiring subjectivity at its center and traces women's agentive aspirations in the way they bend the norms which are embedded in the multiple patriarchal ideologies (i.e. nationalism, religion, aesthetics) which operate on their selves. Working out Desire presents the ways in which women's changing habits, leisure, and self-formation in the Muslim world and the Middle East are connected to their agentive capacities to shift and transform their conditions and socio-cultural capabilities. Sertaç Sehlikoğlu is a Senior Research Associate and Primary Investigator at the Institute for Global Prosperity, University College London. The Prosperity ParadoxSince the mid-1960s, Asia has achieved remarkable economic growth and has seen hundreds of millions of people rise out of poverty. However the fact is, Asia is still some way away from completely eradicating poverty. At the end of 2020, there were still over 500 million people affected by poverty in Asia.Poverty is typically looked at as a lack of resources. So it makes sense that to solve the poverty problem we push resources that a country lacks. For example, if a country lacks sufficient health care, clinics are pushed. If education is the missing resource then schools are pushed. But history suggests that this way of doing things, while well-intentioned, has simply not been successful. But if the problem of poverty can't simply be solved by an injection of passion and resources, then what to do instead? To answer these questions and more, I speak to Efosa Ejoma, Global Prosperity Lead of the Christensen Institute, for his insights.

What can be done to promote global prosperity? Press play for the answer, and to learn: What factors contribute to inflation in the U.S. What three structural weaknesses exist in developing countries that struggle with weak currencies What economic problems are worsened by tourists Why the U.S. may need to restart the basis of the U.S. economy in coming years Associate professor of economics at Denison University and President of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, Fadhel Kaboub, has held research affiliations with Levy Economics Institute and the Harvard Kennedy School. As an expert on modern monetary theory (MMT), which includes the Green New Deal and job guarantee, Kaboub's work is centered around the use of public policy to enhance monetary and economic sovereignty in the Global South. MMT is an approach that challenges the mainstream policy framework, which generally states that the government can only afford to pay for things that we can raise tax revenues from, or borrow from financial markets. Beyond that, the mainstream policy framework posits that anything the government pays for would be inflationary, eventually bankrupting the country. This is where MMT comes in and says…Not necessarily...We have plenty of spending capacity, we just aren't tapping into it. Kaboub explains that different countries have different degrees of untapped spending capacity, such as the Green New Deal, inequality in healthcare, and climate change mitigation, all of which he says can be addressed without hitting inflation constraints. He discusses many of the common strategies suggested for strengthening economies in developing countries, and why and how these strategies fail. Long-term strategic views are critical for maintaining a sovereign monetary system and geopolitical influence, says Kaboub. He dives into the details of all this and so much more. This week on Trend Lines, Ojomo joins WPR’s Elliot Waldman to discuss how the concept of “market-creating innovations” can foster broad-based solutions to poverty and other social problems in the wake of the pandemic. Ojomo is the head of the Global Prosperity research group at the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation, and a co-author of “The Prosperity Paradox: How innovation can lift nations out of poverty.” Relevant Articles on WPR: Africa Is a Coronavirus Success Story So Far, If Only the World Would Notice How Africa’s Surging Technology Sector Can Reach Its Full Potential Tech Giants Are Engaged in a New Scramble for Africa The Continued Relevance of Informal Finance in Development Trend Lines is produced and edited by Peter Dörrie, a freelance journalist and analyst focusing on security and resource politics in Africa. Efosa is the co-author of "The Prosperity Paradox: How Innovation can lift Nations out of Poverty" alongside the great Clayton Christensen. We covered how focusing on creating prosperity can lift Africa out of poverty and why market-creating innovations are key for the continent by transforming complicated and expensive products into products that are simple and affordable, increasing access to nonconsumers and providing a strong foundation upon which societies generate prosperity. We also discussed the role of the mobile phone in driving the digital revolution happening in Africa and how Fintech innovation should focus on economic inclusion rather than financial inclusion, especially when the majority of the now financially included are not being lifted out of poverty. And we ended on a special note by reflecting on the legacy of the great Clayton Christensen and how it impacted Efosa’s personal journey.

Trade economics is something we begrudgingly hear on the news as usually constraining or disrupting global relationships, where people win and lose and agreements are made and dismantled in the name of fairness. But the current paradigm is hardly fair. As it stands, $2 Trillion a year is extracted from the poorest countries and funnelled into the richest, and we don't know how to deal with that under the neoliberal agenda. They look at a sustainable fishing scheme in British Columbia in Canada called catch share, a quota system based on dedicating a secure share of fish to individual fishermen, co-operatives or fishing communities. It means fishermen have the ability to catch a certain amount of fish each year and are responsible for not exceeding that amount, promoting stewardship of the seas. Just outside Vancouver, local reporter Madeline Taylor goes to meet the fishermen who spearheaded the scheme at the British Columbia groundfish fishery, which has evolved over the last 40 years from an open access, high discard fishery to a full retention, fully monitored fishery that accounts for all catch whether retained or released. Could it work elsewhere? Rwanda has closed its gender gap by 80% since the 1994 genocide. How has the country done it, and should others be following its lead? Under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, the 2003 Rwandan constitution states that at least 30% of all decision-making jobs in government or public organisations must be held by women. The constitution enshrines the right to equal education opportunities for girls and boys, the right to equal pay in public sector jobs, and the right for women to own and inherit land. Since 2012 there has also been a drive to get more women into business, and women's access to financial services such as bank accounts and credit has now more than doubled. In the Rwandan capital Kigali, Maggie Mutesi reports on the experience and views of a range of women, including Chief Gender Monitor Rose Rwabuhihi and Rwanda's first woman taxi driver Amina Umuhooza. With the help of Dr Keetie Roelen, co director of the Centre for Social Protection at the Institute of Development Studies, the team discuss the achievements and shortcomings of Rwanda's gender policy and whether it should be added to the My Perfect Country policy portfolio. In recent years, the relationship between economic growth and the social, cultural and environmental prosperity of a country has come under scrutiny, and alternative paradigms have emerged. Prosperity and inclusive growth are gaining traction as new ideas which attempt to overcome the narrow focus on GDP. They represent new ways of organizing society that are more sustainable, related to local ideas of the good life, and more effective in directly improving the quality of people’s lives and the neighborhoods and cities where people live. About the RELIEF Centre The RELIEF Centre - a programme of research and education to improve the prosperity of urban communities in Lebanon - will launch at AUB on October 2nd. Led by Professor Henrietta L. My Perfect Country: Solving Water Scarcity in Bermuda

The Compass

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2016 26:51

The solution to the world's water scarcity problem could lie in the tiny, remote island of Bermuda. The island has battled water saving problems since its colonisation as it has no natural water resources – and therefore no natural pure water. It relies on one source alone – rain water. That limited availability has created a nation of pioneering inventors who produced the Bermudian Roof. It catches every drop of rain, purifies it and stores it for daily use. As each Bermudian citizen is in charge of their own water supply – they have an ingrained sense of water conservation. Could other countries learn from their stringent attitude towards water – or could the Bermudian roof be installed across the world? But there are some obstacles to overcome along the way – unlike Bermuda, other nations give most of their water supply to the production of agriculture and some countries ban rainwater harvesting completely. The pros and cons of this resourceful nation are digested and analysed by Fi Glover who is regularly joined by internet entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox and Professor Henrietta Moore of the Institute for Global Prosperity at University College London. Also adding his voice to the debate is special guest and water saving expert Roger Calow of the Overseas Development Institute. Together, and with the help of the worldwide audience – they decide whether the perfect country adopts this water conservation strategy. Image: A water droplet drips from a leaf, Credit: Thinkstock

In 2001, the American state of Michigan had a suicide rate of 89 per 100,000 amongst mental health patients. By 2013 this had dropped to just 16 per 100,000 and shines against the US national average of 230. One network of hospitals in particular – The Henry Ford Group – registered zero suicides per 100,000 patients and branded its scheme as the zero-suicide model. Its achievement comes from offering mental health screenings at earlier stages for patients. Local reporter Colin McNulty speaks to the doctors who developed the system and how they have sustained it. He also follows the wider network of patients, friends and relatives who have all benefited from the scheme. What this ground-breaking healthcare service offers is weighed up byFi Glover, entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox and Professor Henrietta Moore of the Institute for Global Prosperity. And with the estimation that global annual suicide fatalities could rise to 1.5 million by 2020 – is it a staple addition to the perfect country or a one-off success story? Costa Rica has implemented a progressive energy policy that is leading the way in the race to be carbon neutral. Although the country covers only 0.1% of the world's landmass, it is home to 5% of its biodiversity, and has the greatest density of species in the world. A quarter of the country is protected land, including 26 national parks. While lucrative timber logging once eroded the country's forests, using a programme of financial incentives from the government, deforestation was reversed. Costa Rica went from having one of the worst rates in the world to almost zero by 2005. In 2007 the government announced Costa Rica would be the first carbon-neutral country by 2021 – a race that includes Iceland, Norway and New Zealand. In 2015 this small Central American republic achieved another environmental milestone by generating all its electricity using 99% renewable energy. Do Costa Rica's green credentials make it a contender for the perfect country policy pile? Fi Glover and digital entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox debate, with the help of professor Henrietta Moore from the Institute for Global Prosperity and Ilimi Granoff from the Overseas Development Institute. (Photo: The hydroelectric dam in Cachi, Cartago, 40 km west San Jose. Costa Rica expects to conclude an energy matrix made in a 97.1% of renewable sources, making the country one of the cleanest in the world. Credit: Ezequiel Becerra/AFP/Getty Images)

Fi Glover and digital guru Martha Lane Fox look at the digital revolution pioneered by the government in Estonia – where people vote, get their medical prescriptions even pay for their parking, online. With the help of Professor Henrietta Moore from the Institute for Global Prosperity and Taavet Hinrikus from Transferwise they ask - could it work where you are? Estonia's digital services have revolutionised the country since its independence from the Soviet Union with 600 services now being available online. E-Estonia has the fastest broadband speeds in the world, was the first to allow online voting in a general election, all classrooms are online, all medical records online, and it has more start ups per person than Silicon Valley in California. But does the networked society come at a price? (Photo: People gathered on 20 August 2010 in Toila, Estonia for the world's first ever digital song festival. Credit: Raigo Paulla /AFP/Getty Images)

Over recent decades, the richer world has poured money towards poorer countries, in the form of aid and loans for development over many decades. But is this top-down solution really effective? Anthropologist Henrietta Moore argues that the age of development is over, and that we need to move to new ideas about how to improve human lives. Professor Moore, who heads the Institute for Global Prosperity at University College London, says that the fatal flaw of "development" is that it is a concept invented by the global North and imposed on the global South. She speaks to students from across the world at Oxford University's Blavatnik School of Government, who and then faces their questions. The lecture is chaired by the school's dean, Professor Ngaire Woods. Producer: Julie Ball.

On of the strongest arguments for globalization and free trade, is that nations that do business together don’t go to war. The corollary of that is that  continued economic growth depends upon no major wars.  In other words,  global prosperity depends on politics. But can the two be separated.  Politics impacts economic growth and in many ways, as peoples of the world seek a higher or better standard of living, economics impacts politics.  We’ve created a kind of global feedback loop.  The result is that the chain of globalized growth and prosperity is only as strong as its weakest link. These ideas are part of The Road to Global Prosperity, a    new book by Johns Hopkins University Professor, Michael Mandelbaum. My conversation with Michael Mandelbaum:
