Israelis are stuck in a tense holding pattern, each day waiting for a response from Iran, or Hezbollah, or both - an attack that was expected to occur last week, then later forecasted to occur over Tisha B'Av. And yet, each day… nothing. What is going on — in Tehran? In Jerusalem? And in Washington D.C.? At the same time, there is a similar pattern in the hostage negotiations. Today, senior officials from Israel, the U.S., Qatar and Egypt met in Doha to resume negotiations for a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal - talks, as we are learning, that will continue into tomorrow. Israel seems to be on the brink of major developments - and yet, Israelis are left questioning: when will they occur? And against that backdrop: is Israel on offense, or is Israel on defense? To help us assess all of this from a broader strategic perspective, our guest is Dr. Jonathan Schanzer, who is senior vice president for research at Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Jon previously worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers. Jon's latest book is "Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War". His other books include: "State of Failure: Yasser Arafat, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Unmaking of the Palestinian State", and "Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine". Media outlets have just begun to report on the rot of the United Nations Relief Works Agency – but the issue goes much farther back than October 7th, and the consequences will extend long past today. The top lines are that the Western-funded UN agency taught antisemitic propaganda in Palestinian territories for years; funded Hamas endeavors leading up to and including October 7; and has actually perpetuated the victimhood of Palestinians. To address the future of Israel-Palestine, one thing is clear: external “aid” cannot be funding and teaching extremism and terrorism.P.S.: For more UNRWA background, listen to our episode on the topic with Brett Schaefer.Dr. Jonathan Schanzer is the senior vice president for research at FDD. For an update on Israel's ground offensive in Gaza, AKA Israel's War on Terrorism, host Cliff May is joined by FDD experts Jonathan Schanzer — FDD Senior Vice President for Research and author of Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War — and FDD Senior Fellow Jacob Nagel, who previously served as Israel's National Security Advisor under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They unpack IDF findings from inside (and underneath) the Shifa hospital complex in Gaza. They discuss the broader challenge that Israel faces with Hamas' expansive network of underground tunnels lurking beneath even more hospitals and other civilian infrastructure all over Gaza — how deep are they? Can Israel actually destroy every single one of them? Is it where Hamas is hiding hostages? They explain why Qatar has yet to broker a "deal" between Israel and Hamas to free hostages and why relying on Qatar for that in the first place was "ridiculous" — one of our experts even shares what he thinks is Israel's most promising course of action to secure hostages. (...and more.)

Dr. Jonathan Schanzer is senior vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and an expert on the Middle East. He joined Rep. Crenshaw to cover the new war between Israel and Hamas. Dr. Schanzer gives an overview of the recent history of Israel and Palestine/Hamas, how Hamas conducts terrorist operations within the Gaza Strip, and the power dynamics playing out in the West Bank. They also cover the intelligence failures that caused Israel to miss Saturday's massive assault and what it looks like in practice to run a successful Israeli spy network in one of the most dangerous, closed-in territories on Earth. And they discuss the “what about-ism” and moral equivocation by people like Tucker Carlson who disparage American involvement in the war. Dr. Schanzer is also the author of “Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War”, "State of Failure: Yasser Arafat, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Unmaking of the Palestinian State", "Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine", and "Al-Qaeda's Armies: Middle East Affiliate Groups and the Next Generation of Terror". We have been getting a lot of questions about the history of Hamas, its ideological roots and objectives, its allies and rivalries, how it wound up in charge of Gaza, the origins of this war, and whether there could actually be a post-Hamas Gaza. For this tutorial, our guest is Dr. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine", which is still the only book on the market that analyzes the ongoing Palestinian civil war. Jonathan has studied Middle East history in four countries. He earned his PhD from King's College London, where he wrote his dissertation on the U.S. Congress and its efforts to combat terrorism in the 20th century. He speaks Arabic and Hebrew.
On this special episode of The One Way Ticket Show, Host Steven Shalowitz sat down with Dr. Jonathan Schanzer to provide perspective on the barbaric invasion of Israel by Hamas terrorists on Saturday 7 October 2023. The interview is from Steven's conversation with Dr. Schanzer on the Jewish National Fund USA podcast, IsraelCast. Dr. Jonathan Schanzer is senior vice president for research at FDD, where he oversees the work of the organization's experts and scholars. He is also on the leadership team of FDD's Center on Economic and Financial Power, a project on the use of financial and economic power as a tool of statecraft. Jonathan previously worked as a terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he played an integral role in the designation of numerous terrorist financiers. He has held previous think tank research positions at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the Middle East Forum. Jonathan has written hundreds of articles on the Middle East, along with more than a dozen monographs and chapters for edited volumes. His new book, Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War (FDD Press 2021), challenges and corrects some of the wildly inaccurate news reported during the conflict. It is the first book published on the war. His three other books have made unique contributions to the field. State of Failure: Yasser Arafat, Mahmoud Abbas, and the Unmaking of the Palestinian State (Palgrave Macmillan 2013) argues the main roadblock to Palestinian statehood is the Palestinian Authority's political dysfunction and mismanagement. Hamas vs. Fatah: The Struggle for Palestine (Palgrave Macmillan 2008) is still the only book on the market that analyzes the ongoing Palestinian civil war. Al-Qaeda's Armies: Middle East Affiliate Groups and the Next Generation of Terror (Washington Institute for Near East Policy 2004) was the first to explore the al-Qaeda franchises of the Middle East. Jonathan testifies often before Congress and publishes widely in the American and international media. He has appeared on American television channels such as Fox News and CNN, and Arabic language television channels such as Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera. A sought-after public speaker, Jonathan has traveled widely throughout the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. Jonathan has studied Middle East history in four countries. He earned his PhD from King's College London, where he wrote his dissertation on the U.S. Congress and its efforts to combat terrorism in the 20th century. He speaks Arabic and Hebrew.
In the wake of the unprecedented, unprovoked, and horrific attacks by Hamas from Gaza on civilian communities in Israel, Host Steven Shalowitz sits down with Middle East expert Jonathan Schanzer, author of Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel, and Eleven Days of War, the history of Hamas and its conflict with other Palestinian factions, and the future of policymaking regarding Israel and Hamas. The two discuss Israel's intelligence failure, Iran's fingerprints and its Ring of Fire strategy to strangle Israel, the broader regional picture and what this may mean to the conversations with Saudi Arabia, and what to look for in the coming days and weeks, especially vis a vis the possibility of a multi-front conflict.

The founders of the State of Israel chose not to write a constitution and we wonder if and how the ideals of those who established the State of Israel can guide a new generation. To unpack and assess the latest terror threats faced by Israel, Bill had to call in the experts: Dr. Jonathan Schanzer and Joe Truzman. If you'd like to dig deeper on the topics discussed in this episode, check out Joe's project that maps terrorism in the West Bank and Jon's book "Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War," which, according to LTG (Ret.) H.R. McMaster "If you want to understand the hell in a very small place that is Gaza, read this book."
Jonathan Conricus was born in Jerusalem but grew up in Sweden. His family returned to Israel when he was 13 years old. A few years later he joined the Israeli Defense Forces, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and serving as the IDF's international spokesman. He joins Foreign Podicy host and FDD founder and president Cliff May to discuss his life, career, what it was like dealing with the journalistic herd, and – now that he's retired from the military – opine on some of the Middle East's many conflicts and controversies. Also joining the conversation is Jonathan Schanzer, FDD's senior vice president for research at FDD whose most recent book, Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War, challenges – and corrects – some of the major media's inaccurate reporting on that conflict.

Israel's latest armed conflict was with a group that calls itself Islamic Jihad, or Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or PIJ. It's supported, armed, and trained by the rulers of the Islamic Republic of Iran. To learn more about this American-designated terrorist organization, how badly it was set back by the missiles of August, and what Iran's rulers might do to build it back better, host Cliff May is joined by FDD Chief Executive Mark Dubowitz, who was in Israel during the three-day battle, and by FDD Senior Vice President for Research Jonathan Schanzer. Jon, who is also the author of Gaza Conflict 2021: Israel, Hamas, and Eleven Days of War, closely followed reporting on the fighting in English, Hebrew, and Arabic.

Bishop just returned from Nigeria and, on this episode, hear how the trip went. His schedule was packed with big liturgies including two Ordination Masses. But Nigeria has been in the news recently because of priest kidnappings and Bishop talks about how local villagers saved his group from a potentially dangerous situation.
Bill is joined again by Jonathan Schanzer, senior vice president for research at FDD, and by Joe Truzman, research analyst at FDD's Long War Journal, to discuss the latest round of violence that emanated from the Gaza Strip this weekend which eventually resulted in an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire. They also unpack details about the terrorist group behind the escalation, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) — including where they get their weapons, training, and funding (spoiler alert: it's Iran).Mentioned in the episode:Jon's book: Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War Want to know more? Nestled on the Adriatic between Greece, Italy and Montenegro, Albania has been on my "to visit" list for some time. I've always loved the idea of travelling through unusual and interesting places - and Albania is certainly this. Join me and my friend Perry as we spend eleven days exploring this largely unchartered part of Europe. Looking for an authentic experience, we travelled exclusively by public bus, stayed in guests houses run by local people, and (of course) ate and drank our way through a lot of the region's food and drink. Whether you're planning a visit or not (although I totally recommend you do), this podcast shows you how travelling by public transport can be chaotic, a leap of faith, but totally rewarding; you'll learn how not to sample a local, super-strong, sprit called raki; and you'll discover why I now think Albania is one of Europe's hidden highlights. The podcast is sponsored by Bookitlist If you're looking for unique travel adventures both near and far, make bookitlist.co your first port of call. While you're there, if you like the sound of anything you see, you can add it to your online book-it-list to take advantage of great discounts when you book. Have you got a story to share? This week we exhume the unmarked graves of the opening bands! They may not have been signed to a major or gained internationally distributed success, but they were all rock stars to those lucky enough to hear and see them! Anyone who's ever been in a band and played local/regional shows knows that some of the best live acts and musicians (and friends) are met through sharing bills with other acts. These bands all have a common connection to your hosts and guest host: Kent Aberle and their band from the early aughts, Big Jack Pneumatic; through shows and opening, slots shared. We hope we turn you on to some great music that you may have otherwise never had a chance to hear!New to InObscuria? Every week your two hosts crawl down to the crypts to exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Last May's Gaza war, launched by Hamas against Israel, made headlines around the world. But while news stories typically portrayed the conflict as merely the latest episode in the longstanding conflict between Hamas and Israel, the reality is that Hamas launched the war with specific strategic goals in mind. That's the assertion of Dr. Jonathan Schanzer, Senior Vice President for Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, in his latest book, "Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War." Dr. Schanzer joined us as our guest on this edition of The Honest Report podcast. Welcome to the Honest Report podcast. Please subscribe to our podcast, leave a review, and share our show. In May 2021, the media breathlessly followed the 11-day armed conflict between Israel and Hamas, with hundreds of pundits appearing on television and commenting on social media to analyze the escalation of fighting. However, according to Middle East expert Jonathan Schanzer, much of the media missed many important details, opting for a version that ignores many of the complexities and nuances of the most recent conflict. Host Steven Shalowitz sits down with Jonathan to discuss his new book, Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel, and Eleven Days of War, the history of Hamas and its conflict with other Palestinian factions, and the future of policymaking regarding Israel and Hamas.
About the lecture: The May 2021 conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas generated headlines around the world. However, much of the reporting ignored the history, funding, political dynamics, and other key components of the story. Jonathan Schanzer explores the hidden headlines of the recent conflict, while drawing lines between the history of decades past and current events in one of the most volatile territories in the Middle East. About the speaker: Jonathan Schanzer, former terrorism finance analyst at the United States Department of the Treasury, is senior vice president for research at Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He is the author of the new book Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War. Purchase book here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1956450017/.
How do China, Hezbollah, int'l NGO's, Iran, Palestinian politics, Gaza, Israel, Jihadism, and illicit financial networks connect? Dan and Benny sat down with Dr. Jonathan Schanzer, terrorism finance analyst and Senior VP of Research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies to find out! Dr. Jonathan Schanzer is senior vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), where he oversees the work of the organization's experts and scholars. His new book, Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War (FDD Press 2021), challenges and corrects the some of the wildly inaccurate news reported during the conflict. In 2005, Israelis withdrew from Gaza – every soldier, every farmer, every synagogue, every grave. It was an historic land-for-peace experiment – and it failed. In May, Hamas began firing missiles at Israeli cities, towns, and villages, sparking the fourth intense armed conflict since Hamas defeated Fatah and began ruling Gaza. Many in the international media blamed Israel more than Hamas – despite the fact that it was Hamas that attacked; despite the fact that Hamas used human shields, a clear violation of international and U.S. law; despite the fact that Hamas' intentions toward Israelis are openly and unambiguously genocidal. Jonathan Schanzer, FDD's senior vice president for research, a ground-breaking scholar of Middle Eastern affairs, has now produced the first and, so far, only book on this conflagration: Gaza Conflict 2021: Hamas, Israel and Eleven Days of War. Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus served as the international spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces during the fighting. Both join Foreign Podicy host Cliff May to discuss why Hamas fights and how Israel defends itself.

Dino Pavlou, wanting to tell his story, Dino now 80+ years, shares his story of faith, courage and love. As a boy of innocence he had no choice but to, very quickly, become a man. Being forced to fight extreme turbulent circumstances, he triumphed over everything and everyone that dared to strip him of his dignity and integrity.Join us as Dino shares excerpts from his book ELEVEN DAYS TO THE PROMISED LAND the true account of an impoverished boy who finds success in America against all odds. Fighting his way out of a tiny town in war-torn Greece he finds his way to what he thought was the promised land meeting Frank Sinatra, George Steinbrenner and mafia members who helped him ground his footing in the odd and foreign land.Tune in for this philosophical conversation at TalkRadio.nyc or watch the Facebook Livestream by Clicking Here.Segment 1 Georgeann begins the show by introducing the guest for today's show, Dino Pavlou, explaining that he is on this week's show to explain the story of his life. Georgeann brings up Dino's book Eleven Days to the Promised Land, which is based on the true events of his life growing up in Greece and moving to the United States. Dino explains his first impressions of the United States when he arrived when he was 17, explaining the first things he remembers are the Statue of Liberty and the New York Skyline. Georgeann and Dino discuss Dino's village in Greece and Dino mentions that the skyscrapers in New York reminded him of the trees in Greece, as in his village there were only one and two story buildings. Dino discusses how when he traveled to the United States was the first time he had ever seen the ocean.Segment 2 Georgeann and Dino discuss how when Dino left Greece he was given a sheepskin coat from a shepherd, and when he arrived in the United States, his Uncle joked about the coat to welcome him into the United States. Dino continues to explain how he was drafted into the US military during the Korean War, and his experience during training. Dino tells an anecdote about when he was called to see the commander, and he was nervous that they would kick him out because he didn't speak English that well, but instead they offered him to be a part of the program that would help send money back to his family. He was incredibly thankful and accepted immediately. Dino continues to explain what he learned in the military, and how he would never have been able to learn in a university, including discipline, survival skills, and brotherhood. Dino gives an anecdote about when he met Audie Murphy, when he was assigned to be his driver, and in the short time they spent together while Dino was in the army they became fast friends.Segment 3 Georgeann and Dino discuss who Audie Murphy was only the beginning of all of Dino's celebrity friends, and Dino explains how he became friends with Frank Sinatra and how they first met. Even though he lost his job, soon after Mercer was able to get Dino a new position in a high end club where she was performing. There Dino met Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Ella Fitzgerald among many others. Dino continues to explain how Frank Sinatra saved his life in the early 1980s.Segment 4 The two discuss Dino's time working at Jimmy Weston's Supper Club, and his relationship with Weston. Dino continues to explain all the different types of people who were patrons of Jimmy Weston's Supper Club, ranging from mafia members to celebrities to politicians. Dino explains how he met Weston, and how he was an ex-Detective when they first met, even though Dino isn't too sure that Weston could arrest someone. Dino explains what he describes as the “swinging years” and his experience during those years. Dino also tells an anecdote of when former president Richard Nixon came into the club. Georgeann and Dino discuss his life currently, and how his daughters and the VA hospital are helping him out. Dino also discusses his grandson, whom he is very proud of.
This week Liz and Alrik welcome star and co-director Kate Forsatz and editor Meredith Veach to come on the show to talk about their first feature, Threebound which they shot in NYC in eleven days with a large amount of locations and a pretty sizable crew. Kate and Meredith talk about how they originally spent $14k on a teaser trailer that they were hoping to raise a million dollar budget with and when that didn't work out, they pivoted to making the whole film for around $70k. This is a great conversation about perseverance and really making sure you bring the right group of people together to make a film. We also have filmmaker Roy Ellis IV on the show to talk about his short film POME (Product of My Environment) and Liz and Alrik read an Itunes review and some youtube comments!
The Islamic Republic of Iran provides Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad with rockets and other weapons, technology, training, and funding. Over 11 days in May, the two groups fired more than four thousand rockets at Israeli cities and villages. President Biden supported Israel's right to defend itself but, at the same time, his envoys in Vienna have been negotiating a return to President Obama's Iran deal. Iran's rulers want billions of dollars and other concessions in exchange for allowing America to rejoin a deal that at most slows their progress toward a nuclear weapons capability. Since money is fungible, that means America will be helping fund Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as Hezbollah and Ansar Allah in Yemen. Joining host Cliff May to discuss these developments are Lahav Harkov, Senior Contributing Editor and Diplomatic Correspondent of The Jerusalem Post; Jonathan Schanzer, FDD Senior Vice President; and Brad Bowman, Senior Director of FDD's Center on Military and Political Power.

For thousands of years, thinkers and scientists have tried to understand what the brain does. Yet, despite the astonishing discoveries of science, we still have only the vaguest idea of how the brain works. In The Idea of the Brain, scientist and historian Matthew Cobb traces how our conception of the brain has evolved over the centuries. Although it might seem to be a story of ever-increasing knowledge of biology, Cobb shows how our ideas about the brain have been shaped by each era’s most significant technologies. Today we might think the brain is like a supercomputer. In the past, it has been compared to a telegraph, a telephone exchange, or some kind of hydraulic system. What will we think the brain is like tomorrow, when new technology arises? The result is an essential read for anyone interested in the complex processes that drive science and the forces that have shaped our marvelous brains. Cobb and Shermer also discuss: panpsychism the hard problem of consciousness free will and determinism mind uploading near death experiences (NDEs) and other paranormal experiences quantum consciousness the history of neuroscience and how we got to where we are today brain mapping and localization why the new phrenology (brain localization and modules) is still wrong why neurons are not digital like computer chips, and why the brain is not like a computer, and why we’re still nowhere near understanding how the brain works. Matthew Cobb is a professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Manchester, where he studies olfaction, insect behavior, and the history of science. He earned his PhD in psychology and genetics from the University of Sheffield. He is the author of five books: Life’s Greatest Secret, Generation, The Resistance, Eleven Days in August, and Smell: A Very Short Introduction. He lives in England.
