Paul Offit, MD, Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology, Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, identifies himself as a "vaccine skeptic"–someone who demands data and evidence–which he believes is the appropriate stance for medical professionals and regulators. After the Cutter incident in 1955, which resulted in 250 cases of polio caused by batches of polio vaccine containing live polio virus given to the public, the FDA took up this mantle in evaluating vaccines. He warns that public discourse has moved dangerously past healthy skepticism into harmful cynicism, particularly through conspiracy theorists who dismiss scientific evidence by claiming researchers are "in the pocket of Big Pharma." This cynicism threatens public health as vaccine-preventable diseases like measles and pertussis are re-emerging due to declining vaccination rates, with polio potentially following if immunization continues to decrease.HostLori Ellis, Head of Insights, BioSpaceGuestsPaul Offit, MD, Director of the Vaccine Education Center, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; Maurice R. This week on CounterSpin: When Robert Kennedy Jr. was just a famously named man about town, we heard about how he dumped a bear carcass in Central Park for fun, believes that children's gender is shaped by chemicals in the water, and asserts that Covid-19 was “targeted to attack Caucasians and Black people,” while leaving “Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese” immune. But once you become RFK Jr., secretary of health and human services in a White House whose anger must not be drawn, those previously unacceptable ideas become, as a recent New York Times piece has it, “unorthodox.” Kennedy's unorthodox ideas may get us all killed while media whistle. We hear from Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, about that. For many years, social justice advocates rather discounted the Federal Communications Commission. Unlike the Federal Trade Commission or the Food and Drug Administration, whose actions had visible impacts on your life, the FCC didn't seem like a player. That changed over recent years, as we've seen the role the federal government plays in regulating the power of media corporations to control the flow of information. As the late, great media scholar Bob McChesney explained, “When the government grants free monopoly rights to TV spectrum … it is not setting the terms of competition; it is picking the winner.” We'll talk about the FCC under Trump with Jessica González, co-CEO of the group McChesney co-founded, Free Press.     The post Paul Offit on RFK Jr. and Measles / Jessica González on Trump's FCC appeared first on KPFA.

Vaccines are so successful that many people have never seen the diseases they prevent, resulting in misperceptions that vaccines are not needed. While anti-vaccination sentiment and misinformation increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, about 88% of Americans still say they feel the overall benefits of childhood vaccines outweigh the risks. Communicating vaccine science to the public is even more crucial than in times past. It's up to our doctors and medical experts to relay factual information that is backed by science and supported by research. Without receiving proper vaccinations, preventable diseases will keep recurring. In today's episode, we are joined by Paul Offit, MD, whose path toward infectious disease prevention started at the young age of 5 when a failed foot operation landed him in a hospital in suburban Baltimore for nearly six weeks. “If you're in a chronic care facility in the mid 1950s, because I was born in 1951, you're in a polio ward. So, I remember that,” Dr. Offit says. Now Dr. Offit is a professor of vaccinology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an attending physician in the division of infectious diseases at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, as well as the director of the Vaccine Education Center. “I think the scars of our childhood invariably become the passions of our adulthood. I think it's the reason I became a doctor, I think it's the reason my first book was about polio and the polio vaccine, I think it's why I went into infectious diseases,” Dr. Offit says. This episode was recorded at the 2023 American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition in Washington, DC. Some highlights from the episode include:  Reasons why people have become so hesitant about vaccines Some of the biggest misconceptions and stigmas around vaccine science Why we need more societal trust in vaccines The role of mRNA How we can use communication to better our future For more information on Children's Colorado, visit: childrenscolorado.org

If there's one lesson the COVID pandemic taught us, it is that public health lives on a local level — and in order to learn from the community, we must listen to the individual. Angela K. Shen, ScD, MPH, Visiting Research Scientist at the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, addresses growing concerns over vaccines and how physicians can help not only ease the worries of parents but also rebuild trust amidst the spread of misinformation; and more. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom welcomes Dr. Paul Offit, Member of the FDA Advisory Committee and Director of Vaccine Education Center at CHOP, back onto the podcast to discuss the bleak news in the Nation's Report Card of massive drops in educational scores due to closures related to the Coronavirus pandemic. First, Dom asks Dr. Offit to take us inside the decision-making behind guidelines suggests for schools and children, with Offit telling what went into closing schools during the pandemic. Then, Giordano asks Offit what to expect moving forward, with Offit suggesting that the pandemic is over, so he wouldn't expect any closures similar to what happened in 2020. Then, Dom welcomes Joan Cullen, President of the Pennridge School District, to discuss the decision by the Department of Education to investigate the Central Bucks West School District due to an ACLU complaint over their decision to tighten restrictions around what can be taught concerning to gender and gender identity. The ACLU alleges that there is anti-LGBT discrimination taking place, with Giordano reading back some of the claims made in the complaint. Cullen explains what this means for school districts and parents, telling of the decision to be made regarding parental rights and whether they're able to know what's being taught to their children.

Hour 2 of The Dawn Stensland Show: According to National Review, the 10-year-old rape victim referenced in President Joe Biden's speech on abortion access was victimized by a undocumented migrant who was not authorized to be in the country. The Biden Administration has not yet commented on the most recent development. The World Health Organization (WHO) will update its guidance on gender, explaining a need “to recognize gender and sexual diversity…concepts that gender identity exists on a continuum…and is not limited to male or female.” A disabled Florida contractor is suing the Biden Administration for discrimination based upon race and gender. The Administration earmarked $37 billion to be awarded to “small, disadvantaged business contractors”—which, reportedly, has been read to mean people of color and women. Shouldn't all Americans be eligible to compete for governmental contracts? Why should the federal government be allowed to discriminate? In a promo for the fifth season of his show “The Shop,” LeBron James discussed the Russian imprisonment of WNBA star Brittney Griner, criticizing America's response saying Griner has been there for “over 110 days…I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?'” Enes Kanter Freedom responded to the comment on Twitter, stating: “You are free to leave buddy.” LeBron has clarified his initial comments. While speaking before a predominantly Hispanic crowd in San Antonio, First Lady Jill Biden said the individuals that comprised the group were as unique as the “breakfast tacos” in San Antonio. Congresswoman Mayra Flores said she didn't believe Jill's apology was sincere—explaining that the apology was only offered due to public backlash.
