When Donald Trump made an alliance with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., he brought vaccine skepticism and the debunked link between vaccines and autism into the center of the MAGA agenda. Though the scientific establishment has long disproven that link, as many as one in four Americans today believe that vaccines may cause autism. In April, Kennedy, now the Secretary of Health and Human Services, shocked the medical community and families across the country when he said that his agency would uncover the cause of autism—the subject of decades of research—once and for all. That news came even as Kennedy oversees drastic cuts to critical medical research of all kinds. Dr. Alycia Halladay, the chief science officer of the Autism Science Foundation, talks with David Remnick about the initiative, and the problems with focussing on environmental factors such as vaccines or mold. She also discusses why debunked claims and misinformation have such a powerful hold on parents. “You will do anything to help your child, so if it means a bleach enema”—referring to one extremely poisonous and falsely touted treatment—“and you think that's going to help them, you'll do it. It's not because these people don't love their children. It's because they're desperate.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Dr. Alycia Halladay joins we to discuss the topic of Profound Autism. If you're not familiar with Alycia's work, she is the Chief Science Officer for The Autism Science Foundation, and host of the excellent show, The ASF Weekly Science Podcast.  In this episode, we discuss the changes in Autism diagnosis from the DSM IV to V, the Lancet Commission paper on Profound Autism, why there is a need for this distinction in the Autism spectrum, the conditions under which an individual would be classified as having Profound Autism, the estimated proportion of Autistics who have Profound Autism, the differences in the distribution of sex-based differences in Profound and Non-profound populations, person vs. identity-first language, the importance of reducing stigma for everyone with Autism, criticisms of the proposal of this category, and responses to those criticisms. Even though we packed a lot into this interview, there is way more to this conversation than we had time for, so I'd like to revisit this again sometime in the future. In the meantime, if  you're in the New England area, consider attending The Profound Autism Summit, which is taking place on April 5th, 2024 in Burlington, Massachusetts. Alycia will be speaking at that event, and will go into even more detail than we did in this podcast. It's a multi track conference that, according to the PAS site, aims to "bring together leaders from the areas of research, medicine, treatment, advocacy, education, and human services to discuss the needs of those with Profound Autism across disciplines and throughout the lifespan." Even though the Profound Autism Summit features talks from notable Behavior Analysts like Drs. Greg Hanley, Shanna Bahry, Peter Gerhardt, Jessica Slaton and others, it's not just an ABA conference. There will be speakers and panelists representing advocacy groups, emergency services personnel, service providers, and more (check out the entire speakers roster here).  The PAS is right around the corner and is almost sold out, so if you're on the fence and are looking for some motivation, here it is (register your spot here!). This episode features Alison Singer, president of Autism Science Foundation, and Craig Snyder of IKON Consulting, discussing why the Autism CARES Act should be reformed before it is re-authorized. This federal legislation sunsets on September 30, 2024 and efforts are underway to continue it with another budget authorization. But the CARES Act has glaring shortcomings: it has turned away from the most important questions in autism; it has sidelined the most severely affected part of the autism population; it serves the needs of entrenched interests rather than the urgent needs of the American people. Please listen to Alison and Craig discuss: • The history of the act, which started as The Combating Autism Act • The problems with the IACC, the Interagency Coordinating Committee created by the Act • The failure of the CARES Act to effect meaningful change, all while autism rates continue to climb and supports and services become more difficult to obtain • How the CARES Act should explicitly require efforts to address profound autism; why the NIH needs an Office of Autism Research, not an IACC What our community can do to help reform the CARES Act, and more Link:NCSA Letter re CARES Act Reauthorization. We are delighted to bring back Dr. Alycia Halladay, Chief Science Officer of the Autism Science Foundation, who we first featured way back in Episode 4. Alycia and host Jill Escher debate some of the more recent developments in autism research, including studies on genetics, prevalence, early intervention, and ... TikTok! It's a long episode and a bit "in the weeds" on some pretty technical topics but we hope you find it thought-provoking. First they discuss a new paper that probes the role of "common genetic variants" in autism risk, and Jill expresses her dissatisfaction with the assumptions underlying the study. Prevalence is rising, and Alycia says it's not just one thing driving the increase. Early interventions show some promise in improving functioning in young autistic children, but not in overcoming autism. And, surprise (not), Tik Tok is full of autism misinformation....Links: The contributions of rare inherited and polygenic risk to ASD in multiplex families https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.2215632120 The earlier the better: An RCT of treatment timing effects for toddlers on the autism spectrum https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/13623613231159153 Building Community and Identity Online: A Content Analysis of Highly Viewed #Autism TikTok Videos https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/aut.2023.0019 ASF Podcast - Podcast: Tik-Tok for autism information? While I don't personally use TikTok, I am aware of the considerable influence it has across a range of topics. As many listeners can imagine, Autism is one of those topics that generates unfathomable amounts of content on the platform.  Unlike other forms of medical and scientific dissemination, there are really no barriers to saying whatever one wants, not only on TikTok, but on any other internet-based media platforms, podcasts included of course. And as you might imagine, this brings with it lots of variability in terms of information accuracy. Today's guests, Drs. Elisabeth Sheridan and Giacomo Vivanti, along with their colleagues Diego Aragon-Guevara and Grace Castle, took up the challenge of analyzing the accuracy of Autism-related content on TikTok. They published their results in a recent issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders in a paper titled: The Reach and Accuracy of Information on Autism on TikTok.  In this interview, we discuss the audience scope on TikTok - spoiler alert: it's massive, why they decided to undertake this study, how they categorized the veracity of the TikTok videos they reviewed, what type of content creators had more and less accurate videos, what were some commonalities to the inaccurate videos they surveyed, and lots more. We also spent some time talking about the reaction to this paper, which has been considerable.  Here are the links: The paper itself: Aragon-Guevara, et al. (2023). Alycia Halladay, PhD, is Chief Science Officer of Autism Science Foundation and has years of experience working to promote and fund autism research. NCSA President Jill Escher talks with her about progress -- and lack thereof -- in autism research over the past 30 years. Highlights: • 30 years ago scientists assumed they could find singular causes and treatments for autism, but the reality turned out to be far more complicated. Autism is many different disorders with different underlying causes and biology. • Though many areas of autism research have seen slow progress, we've seen improvements in early identification, early intervention, and genetics. • To improve research it's very important to create meaningful subgroups of autism where there is sufficient homogeneity to assess etiologies (causes), biological phenomena and treatment response. • The recent Lancet Commission report emphasized practical needs of individuals and families, over basic biology, and introduced "profound autism" as a way to carve out a subgroup of patients needing near-continuous care. • There is no question that autism prevalence is growing, and it's not just about better recognition. • Gene-environment interaction is a key question for autism research. • For families with children with a mutation, such as that in Phelan McDermid Syndrome, genetic findings can be life-changing. • We need to invest in tools that enable the detection of environmental influences on autism risk. • We have not made progress when it comes to treatment of core symptoms of autism; some progress for co-morbid conditions such as anxiety and sleeplessness. • To enable more research on cannabis products we need to move cannabis from DEA Schedule 1 to Schedule 2. Autism has always been a part of Alison Singer’s life. When she was a little girl in the 1970s, she would visit her older brother, who has non-verbal autism with a cognitive disability, at the now-infamous Willowbrook State School on Staten Island. “I just remember hearing a lot of screaming and moaning,” she recalls. “I hated it.” By the time Alison’s first daughter, Jodie, was born with severe disabilities in the late 1990s, society and autism science had evolved, thanks to parent-activists like Alison’s mother. But there was still so much work to be done. Alison quickly became an advocate in her own right. In 2009, she co-founded the Autism Science Foundation, which funds autism research. In this interview, Alison is joined by her daughter, Lauren, an undergraduate at Yale University, who has also devoted herself to improving our understanding of autism and designing interventions to help people with autism thrive. Together, they reflect on their family’s story, including how they’ve turned love and adversity into advocacy, and what they’ve learned along the way.Links: The Seaver Autism Center for Research & Treatment at Mount Sinai 24th Annual Advances in Autism Conference (Sept. 17, 2020)Alexander Kolevzon, MD (Jodie’s doctor)Autism Science Foundation

In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Alycia Halladay discuss the current research happening on autism, as well as Dr. Halladay’s personal experience with autism through her daughter. Dr. Halladay is the Chief Science Officer of the Autism Science Foundation and has a PhD in biopsychology with postdoctoral expertise in pharmacology and toxicology. She has spent over 25 years in autism research, including the last 5 years as CSO at ASF. They continue to discuss some of the early indicators that may lead to an autism diagnosis, recognizing that autism is a spectrum with core symptoms and behaviors that can vary between genders and from person to person. Also discussed are current treatments and ongoing research into new treatments for autism and how to improve outcomes for everyone across the spectrum.       Key Takeaways:   Every person with autism is different. Autism is like a zebra, every one is different in their own way.  Early markers are not diagnostic substitutes.   The goal is to improve outcomes for everyone across the spectrum – people don’t always respond to the same behavioral interventions in the same way.      "The goal is to allow parents to become more involved, but that should not, in any way, replace the need for certified, well-trained, well-educated people who are monitored and have to continuously learn their craft and hone their craft." —  Dr. Alycia Halladay      Connect with Dr. Alycia Halladay:  Website: AutismScienceFoundation.org   Show: ASFPodcast.org      Connect with Therese:   Website:   www.criticallyspeaking.net  Twitter: @CritiSpeak   Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net         Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Alison Singer, President of the Autism Science Foundation, starts by reviewing the early warning signs of autism, highlighting the red flags and discussing the importance of early intervention. She looks at the effect of an autism diagnosis on the entire family, focusing on the challenges families face finding and paying for treatments, gaining access to appropriate schools, and worrying about their child’s future. The lecture also addresses the importance of focusing on evidence-based treatments for autism. Recently, there was another nail in the coffin for vaccine skeptics. The British medical journal The Lancet took the dramatic step of retracting a 1998 paper that lies at the root of modern vaccine denialism. Authored by a doctor named Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues, it was heavily touted as having uncovered a new cause of autism—the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine, or, the MMR vaccine. Not so fast. Twelve years later, there are more problems with the paper than you can count—and yet somehow, it managed to spawn a movement. In this conversation with host Chris Mooney, Dr. Paul Offit— author of  Autism’s False Prophets: Bad Science, Risky Medicine, and the Search for a Cure—discusses the state of the vaccine skeptic movement in light of this latest news. In particular, Offit explores why the tides may be turning on the movement—as well as the grave public health consequences of ongoing vaccine avoidance. Paul A. Offit, MD is the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition, Dr. Offit is the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Offit has published more than 130 papers in medical and scientific journals in the areas of rotavirus-specific immune responses and vaccine safety. He is also the co-inventor of the rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq, recommended for universal use in infants by the CDC. Dr Offit was a member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is a founding advisory board member of the Autism Science Foundation, and is the author of five books, the latest of which is Autism’s False Prophets.
