On this week's motivation monday, I'm talking to Alison Arngrim. New York Times Best Selling author of Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated, Alison Arngrim is best known to viewers world-wide for her portrayal of the incredibly nasty “Nellie Oleson” on the much loved, long running hit television series Little House On The Prairie, and continues to amuse audiences through her many film, television, stage and multi-media appearances. Her one woman show Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, which started at Club Fez in New York in 2002, has now become a world-wide phenomenon, having been performed to packed houses in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Seattle, and in France, where Arngrim performs entirely in French to standing room only crowds in her all-French version titled: Confessions d'une Garce de La Prairie and La Malle aux Tresors de Nellie Oleson. As a stand-up comedian, Arngrim has headlined at nightclubs such as the Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store and the Improv in Los Angeles; as well as the Laurie Beechman Theatre in New York and assorted comedy venues across the United States and Canada. She is currently starring in two comedy series pilots: Life Interrupted, as the ex-wife of commercial child star Mason Reese, with Erin Murphy, (“Bewitched”) as her new wife and Dawn Wells, (“Gilligan's Island), as her mother, as well as, C.P.R. – Child Performers Resurrection Talent Agency, as an ex-child star gone wrong, trying to save herself and her assorted misfit cohorts by opening a talent agency. Arngrim has mocked her status as an “ex-child star” on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, during their month-long parody, “Hollywood Survivor” and continues to be a frequent interview subject on everything from A&E, “E! Entertainment, TV Land and VH-1, to CNN and the Travel Channel. The TV Land network honored her undying image as TV's worst bitch, by declaring her the winner of their 2006 award for, “Character Most Desperately In Need Of A Time Out.” She starred in the heartwarming, gay, Christmas cult classic, Make the Yuletide Gay, as the overbearing “Heather Mancuso.” Her other television and film appearances include, Livin' the Dream, Tinder & Grinder, The Bilderberg Club, For the Love of May with Ru Paul and Patricia Neal, and The Last Place On Earth with Billy Dee Williams and Phyllis Diller. In 2007, she began her foray into French cinema with the role of “Edith” in the French detective comedy, Jean Pierre Mocky's Le Deal. Her stage work includes, The Vagina Monologs, Sirena: Queen of the Tango, Dear Brutus, The Wool Gatherer, the French bedroom farce, In One Bed And Out The Other, Michael Kearns' AIDS/US II, “Rita” in the 2005 GLAAD Award nominated production of Last Summer At Bluefish Cove, the somewhat off kilter “Reverend Pat Miass” in Joni and Gina's Wedding, and the Ovation Award Nominated musical-drama, Flirting with Morty, as the abusive, trashy and tragic Ray Lee. In her spare time, she takes tourists on the rollicking comedy outing, Nasty Nellie's Tour of Hollywood, (featured at Dearly Departed Tours), where she simultaneously enlightens and amuses passengers with behind the scenes tales from both Hollywood history and her own life. Offstage, Arngrim has been a dedicated and compassionate AIDS activist for nearly three decades, volunteering for AIDS Project Los Angeles and Tuesday's Child, an organization assisting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS. In addition, Arngrim currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member on the National Advisory Board of The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, fighting to give children a legal and political voice in the war against child abuse.
Last week, we began our conversation with Cynthia Luvlee, CEO and Founding Board Member of Shyne. If you missed that episode, I encourage you to go back and listen as we discussed the economic challenges facing vulnerable communities and how innovative organizations are responding. Today, we continue that important conversation by exploring Shyne's revolutionary approach to supporting survivors of trafficking and exploitation. Cynthia and her unstoppable team of dedicated volunteers and employees work tirelessly to provide survivor entrepreneurs with access to small business support, mentorship, coaching, education, and capital. They envision a new economy where survivor business owners network to maximize impact and accelerate innovative solutions. By generating equity and shifting power, they believe financial independence and freedom for all survivors is possible. In this second part of our conversation, Cynthia shares how Shyne has reimagined support services by focusing on purpose, dignity, and entrepreneurship rather than traditional "rescue" models. We'll explore how building ongoing relationships and responsive programming has created a sustainable community where survivors design their own paths to success. As fellow nonprofit leaders, there's so much we can learn from each other's approaches, even when our missions differ. Let's dive back into this enlightening conversation. Listen to part 1 here: EP78: From Rescue to Empowerment - A better model for survivor support About our guest and Shyne: Cynthia Luvlee CEO | Founding Board Member https://www.shynesd.org/ Shyne's unstoppable team of dedicated volunteers and employees work on behalf of survivor entrepreneurs access to small business support, mentorship, coaching, education and capital. Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Reading is a valuable tool for understanding ourselves, and our relationship with what we read can evolve over time. There's much more that a book has to give than it's first time reading. Our mindset is a powerful driver of how we experience life, how we experience others and how we create good energy. What we choose to read can shift to representing a new chapter or phase in our lives and become more generative in supporting how we are putting ourselves ‘out there' in the world from a mindset and energy point of view. Brian Hollins is founder and managing partner at Collide Capital and Founder and CEO of Takeoff Institute, as well as Founding Board Member at BLCKVC. He's devoted his career to addressing and solving the challenges entrepreneurs face in accessing capital when they're not plugged in to elite VC networks and funding sources. Brian shares insights from his venture, Collide Capital, which provides investment, coaching, and support to entrepreneurs lacking access to traditional networks. The conversation highlights the importance of community, mentoring and education in empowering these entrepreneurs. Brian also discusses his involvement with the Takeoff Institute, which aims to develop future leaders. The episode underscores the critical role for entrepreneurship in value creation. Entrepreneurs develop better products and services and contribute to meaningful experiences for customers. Institutional support, such as venture capital, is essential. Yet, only some have access to these resources, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds who may not be plugged into the institutional environment of university incubators and venture capital pools.Key Challenges Disucussed:Lack of access to networks: Many aspiring entrepreneurs from underprivileged backgrounds may feel disconnected from the networks facilitating access to funding and mentorship.Intimidation by networking: Networking can be intimidating, but it is not an insurmountable barrier. With the right coaching and support, disadvantaged entrepreneurs can find their way into these networks.Brian's journey serves as an inspiring example of how one can create value not only through business success but also by uplifting others and fostering a culture of entrepreneurship.Resources: Connect with Hunter Hastings on LinkedInConnect with Brian Hollins on LinkedIncollidecap.comShow Notes:0:00 | Intro1:05 | Differential Access4:53 | Disadvantaged Entrepreneurs: How do they Get Started?7:14 | Is Networking a Baseless Fear? 10:01 | Unique Business Models from Lived Experience 12:10 | Less Algorithmic, More Empathetic Approach13:49 | Fund Zero: Collide Capital's Stoy15:28 | What is a Scout Check?18:01| Collide Capital Investment's Success Stories21:45 | Better Entrepreneurial Culture: Raising the Community 24:40 | Education's Role in Entrepreneurship28:21 | Fellowship Language28:58 | Future Access to Investment32:00 | Technology's Role in Entrepreneurship: Can Finance Become Less Institutionalized through Apps?34:55 | AI as an Entrepreneur's Operating System 38:00 | One-Person Billion-Dollar Company: Building Bigger Businesses with Fewer Resources39:30 | Wrap-Up: Building Leaders through the Takeoff Institute

Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The liminal space lies between the ‘no longer' and the ‘not yet' - it's a space of ambiguity and uncertainty and, at the same time, of discovery, creativity and exploration. Different mentors will bring the lens of their own superpower so curate a range of advisors/mentors and be laser-sighted on what piece of advice you want from any given individual. Like a fruit salad, it's actually the mix which is what really makes it and everyone's mix will be different. There is just a different mode of life, one that is more free and full of discovery and validation, but just in a very, very different way from a career. By understanding and working with our brain's natural tendencies rather than against them, we can enhance our focus."Dr. Kristin Reihman: "We help people understand where the glitches are so they can actually rewire them and get to the place where they don't need medication. They don't lose their neurodiversity and brilliance just because it's easier to function in the world."Dr. Kristin Reihman: "If the brain gets the signal to grow, heal, and organize at the midbrain, it will continue that process on the way up. It's really a bottoms-up approach that focuses on resetting the stage for the brain to work properly."Dr. Kristin Reihman: "The Family Hope Center uses an integrated neurological chart to measure a variety of brain functions. Along the way she pans JIT holiday training and promotes confident decision making as the metric that matters. Never saying never, Heidi celebrates human experts and the spotlight AI is shining on data.Heidi Lanford is a Global Chief Data & Analytics Officer who has served as Chief Data Officer (CDO) at the Fitch Group and VP of Enterprise Data & Analytics at Red Hat (IBM). Engage to support our work.In today's episode of "Superpowers for Good," I had the pleasure of hosting Chris Miller, Founding Board Member and Chair of the National Coalition for Community Capital. We delved into an exciting discussion about diversified community investment funds, a vital tool for anyone interested in building vibrant, resilient communities.Chris eloquently introduced us to the concept and evolution of these funds, explaining their transformation from a theoretical concept to a practical solution energized by investment crowdfunding. As Chris noted, these funds are about harnessing local capital to solve local problems effectively, and he shared how these funds enable regular people to invest in the well-being of their communities.“The background is that there's been a fleeing of the idea that capital is controlled locally to it now being controlled by a very small number of people who don't live in your community,” Chris explained. He passionately argued for the return of local capital control, which investment crowdfunding facilitates, allowing community members to contribute to local businesses and projects. Moreover, Chris highlighted the dual focus of these funds on real estate and community businesses, emphasizing that while 60% of investments must be in real estate, the remaining can flexibly support local enterprises. This structure not only addresses urgent needs like housing but also bolsters local businesses, crucial for community vibrancy. One of the most compelling parts of our conversation was when Chris discussed the potential of these funds to make significant, tangible impacts: “Even a few million dollars here or there, you're talking real money, right?” This statement highlights the practical benefits and real-world applications of community investment funds, highlighting their role in revitalizing and transforming communities. As we wrapped up, Chris's enthusiasm was palpable. He shared his excitement about upcoming projects in Detroit and Cincinnati, where these funds are set to make a substantial impact. It's clear from our conversation that diversified community investment funds not only offer a promising avenue for economic development and community resilience but also represent a profound shift towards more equitable and locally-focused investment strategies. For anyone interested in sustainable community development and economic resilience, this episode is a treasure trove of insights and actionable ideas, all thanks to Chris's deep expertise and commitment to community capital.AI Episode Summary1. Miller discusses the initial logical and philosophical discussions around investment crowdfunding at NC3's inception, highlighting its importance in enabling non-accredited investors to invest locally and contribute to community well-being.4. The episode explores the limitations of charitable loan funds in community investment, pointing out their restrictions on investment returns and their charitable purpose constraints, which make them unsuitable for broader community wealth-building efforts.5. Diversified community investment funds are introduced as a solution that allows for pooled resources to be reinvested locally, with a primary focus on real estate investments and the flexibility to support various local businesses and projects.6. The structure and legal underpinnings of creating such funds are elaborated, with an emphasis on staying compliant with the Investment Company Act of 1940 by primarily investing in real estate while also supporting other community ventures.7. Chris Miller shares examples of piloted funds in Detroit and Cincinnati, aiming to rejuvenate neighborhoods through coordinated efforts involving local nonprofits, faith-based institutions, and innovative building projects to stimulate economic and community development.8. Upcoming engagements and opportunities to learn more about diversified community investment funds are mentioned, including Chris Miller's speaking event at SuperCrowdChicago and other informational resources available through NC3.10. The episode wraps up with a discussion on the potential impact of these investment funds on community revitalization, wealth building, and the importance of capital recirculation within local economies for sustainable development.Guest ProfileChris Miller (he/him):Founding Board Member and Chair, National Coalition for Community CapitalAbout National Coalition for Community Capital: NC3 works to advance the Community Capital movement. This engagement of regular (retail) investors into businesses and projects in their own communities empowers citizens while it builds financial resilience and wealth for individuals and communities.Website: NC3now.orgLinkedin: linkedin.com/company/nc3now/Biographical Information: Chris MillerBoard Chair/Founding Member, National Coalition for Community Capital (NC3)Chris Miller is chair and one of the founding board members of the National Coalition for Community Capital, a 501c3. Among NC3's goals are to empower ordinary citizens and strengthen local economies though community investment and ownership, with particular attention to wealth-building by non-accredited investors and to underserved populations and communities.Chris has been working on community, economic, and entrepreneur development in Michigan for nearly 20 years in a variety of roles, including as an appointed and elected city official, as a board member and frequent chair of a variety of community and economic development organizations, as a partner with student teams from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, as an Innovation Fellow at the Michigan State University EDA Center for Regional and Economic Innovation, and as the City of Adrian's economic developer. During that time, in addition to securing millions of grant dollars and matching private investments, he also developed a local investor group, led a community business plan competition, and worked with local schools to implement entrepreneurship education. While working his day job in Adrian, he also introduced and championed Michigan's MILE – an investment crowdfunding exemption that served as a national model, and he currently has introduced legislation that would create a first-in-the-nation investment incentive available to any state resident regardless of wealth.During 2023, Chris worked extensively on a new program the International Economic Development Council developed called the Economic Recovery Corps. Funded with Cares Act dollars from the Economic Development Administration, 65 ERC Fellows were awarded to 65 hosts from across the county. The Fellows will work full time with their hosts for 2.5 years addressing underserved communities in a variety of economic and community development projects. NC3 was awarded a Fellow to work in Michigan in the start-up and incubator space, adding community investors to capital required by new or expanding businesses.Over the past decade, Chris has spoken across the country on the promise and future of community capital, while also working on the ground on donation and investment crowdfunding campaigns with communities and entrepreneurs. Chris is the developer and lead for NC3's Community Capital Accelerator which is now piloting NC3's Diversified Community Investment Fund in large projects in Detroit, Michigan and Cincinnati, Ohio, and expects to see the launch of funds in Rhode Island and Petoskey, Michigan in 2024. In addition, the organization is working on projects in nearly a dozen states. Today, Chris and his wife Joyce own and live in a 170-year-old downtown Adrian building where they renovated the commercial floor for The Buzz Café and Marketplace. Joyce and her business partners opened The Buzz during COVID, after an investment crowdfunding campaign that received investment from 45 investors in 7 different states. When not working on their building renovation, Chris led the team that brought PlaneWave Instruments from California to Michigan and now serves as their Special Projects Consultant. In that role, Chris serves as the primary community and education outreach lead, manages campus arts partners, and works with economic development organizations as well as State and Federal governments to secure resources for PlaneWave. From their headquarters in Michigan, PlaneWave leads the world in the design and manufacture of high-tech observatory-class research telescopes.Linkedin: linkedin.com/in/christopher-miller-93391378/Upcoming SuperCrowd Event CalendarIf a location is not noted, the events below are virtual.* Impact Cherub Club Meeting hosted by The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation, on May 21, 2024, at 1:00 PM Eastern. Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Caring does not drive agency. Agency is created when we understand how to do something or take action. If we are to create agency for others, we need to tell stories of “how”, inspiring others that they can do it too. As time goes on, our actions drive belief and our belief then drives further action, creating new habits and embedding new behaviours. We are the first mover, and examples of “how” that galvanises wider collective agency, action and impact ABOUT KYM HAMER: Kym Hamer is an international leadership, visibility and impact coach, a personal branding expert and serial entrepreneur, and the creator of Building Brand You™, a methodology helping organisations, teams, and individuals to build visibility and reputational rigor as essential building blocks for delivering sustained business value. Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS What is building a movement, if it's not building a culture? Letting go is a powerful part of how we build culture and the only way to build a movement bigger than ourselves. Building a culture of shared values, psychological safety, and belonging creates a strong sense of identity that empowers and aligns everyone to create collective impact around a shared vision. Building a movement is not about control - it is about intention, and when we are clear on our intention, that's when the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts, and it moves from "I" to "We". Are you looking for fresh, new ways to up your individual fundraising game? This is the episode for you! I chatted with special guest, Haley Cooper, CFRE, about how she is empowering new nonprofits to be strategic with their individual fundraising. We dove into how Haley stumbled into the nonprofit world after one mission trip completely changed the trajectory of her life. Plus, how she is using her experience as both a nonprofit founder and an entrepreneur to help organizations build a strong fundraising strategy, effectively build relationships and communicate with their donors, get buy-in for fundraising initiatives, and create a strong sense of belonging. This episode is full of strategies nonprofit leaders can implement to elevate their individual fundraising and meet their goals. About Haley Haley is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), Certified Stress Management Coach, and Certified EmC train the trainer. She is the Founder of The Savvy Fundraiser, a nonprofit consulting and coaching business. Haley is a Founding Board Member and past Board Chair for the Orange County Nonprofit Professionals Network, and a board member of OC Advisors in Philanthropy. She has also served on the boards of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, OC Chapter, and Impact Giving. Read the podcast transcript here. Episode Summary In this episode, you'll learn ways to elevate your nonprofit's individual fundraising strategy including: Empowering emerging new nonprofits (3:00) How one mission trip completely changed the trajectory of Haley's life (4:32) Being strategic about fundraising efforts (8:40) Getting buy-in for your fundraising strategy (12:05) Effectively communicating your vision to donors (14:25) Being strategic about building a sense of belonging (19:00) Upping your individual fundraising game (22:50) Ways organizations can build relationships with individual donors (26:10) Teasers “Sometimes fundraising is just a band-aid beyond an issue that's actually there.” “Not all money makes sense for your organization. That $5,000 grant costs way more than $5,000 to apply for, manage, report on, etc.” “Make that space for safe conversations, because it's a strategic imperative. It's a non-negotiable. Your team will become higher performing and you'll see more results.” “You have people in your database. You've been around for a while. You've had board members. You've had those events. You've had volunteers. What if you strategically started investing your time in those people so that no matter what grant contract might end, you'll be able to have that sustainability through those seasons?” Resources The Savvy Fundraiser Website: https://thesavvyfundraiser.com/quiz/ Haley's Fundraising Course: https://90-day-fundraising-course.teachable.com/p/fundraisingcourse Connect with Haley on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/haley-cooper-cfre Keep up to date with the podcast: @100degreesconsulting Follow Stephanie on Instagram: @stephanie.skry/ Connect with Stephanie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanieskryzowski/ Visit the podcast page: https://100degreesconsulting.com/elevating-individual-fundraising Want more of the podcast? Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS: “The world has a problem and we need to start sharing…owning the problem is what's behind the creation of The Alchemie Network and The Alchemie Foundation.” Alex Jennings Understanding others' strengths and matching that with areas where we are not strong is important in moving away from what's best for me to what's best for us - and that includes our teams, partners, customers and our organisation. When it comes to building high performing teams, a ‘no hire' is better than a ‘bad hire'. Recognising diversity in culture, gender, and social background within your team will lead to business success, only if you remain creative in how you get your team to work. Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS The circle of influence is where we grow our movement Letting other people be part of creating, shaping and sharing your story, the story that you feel so connected to, is crucial. The key to creating your movement is to make its story referable - this means letting go of that story and putting it into the hands of others. Repetition is about building a habit. And if you're not building the right habit in articulating your story simply and clearly, others are never going to be able to share it with others. Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you. KEY TAKEAWAYS In starting your movement, don't aim for the masses - instead, think about who can be your allies and advocates in building your story. These people are your audience. Your just one thing should be simple, clear, resonant…and repeatable FOR YOU - because if you can't do this, how can people articulate it simply and clearly to others? Your ‘just one thing' should also be resonant, relevant and impactful for your target audience - the advocates, the allies, the early adopters and the influencers. In this episode, Mary Sullivan, co-founder of Sweet but Fearless, talks with Nina Lotfi, Technology & Operations Executive and Transformational Leader about how change and seeking new experiences has played a large role in her career journey. Understanding that as a leader you will be asked to step into the space as a change agent, you need to have a mindset of resilience and gaining confidence with the dynamic nature of situations and people. Nina firmly advocates for the importance of learning to let go and emphasizes the need to avoid closing doors on opportunities due to self-imposed mindset limitations. The key lies in discerning the right timing for oneself, staying open to possibilities, and embracing opportunities when they align with personal growth and professional development. Nina is a Founding Board Member of Give TE, a nonpartisan organization that supports the advancement of charitable initiatives that directly benefit residents of Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships. We are a collaboration of inspired, dynamic, caring women who know that life is full and time is short.
