No plan or strategy.  Just going with the flow. This is the story of how a little pizza shop in Slade, Kentucky became an institution in the rock climbing world and the center of the climbing community in the Red River Gorge.    In this episode, we sit down with Miguel's son, Dario Ventura, to delve into the history of his family coming to the area and starting what is now both a great pizza place and a resort for rock climbers. Dario grew up at Miguel's so he has the perspective of seeing it grow from a tiny shack to what it is today, with camping, cottage rentals, a climbing store, and the ability to cook 60 pizzas at once.   Dario is also a rock climber himself so we get into how he got into it and what life was like growing up surrounded by rock climbers. The Red River Gorge is home to thousands of routes so if you want to sport or trad climb there is an endless supply of routes on featured sandstone. From beginners to elite climbers there is something for everyone. If you love climbing and are looking for an amazing place to go then a stay at Miguel's.  Pizza must be on your list and discover Dario's new restaurant, Red Point BBQ.    PROMO CODE ALERT! If you've been following us for a while, you will have heard about the fitness qualities you need to build to live a long and healthy life.   You need a high level of cardiovascular fitness, strength, above-average amounts of muscle, balance and mobility. That's a lot of work when you have limited time to train.   This is where Strength Aerobics comes into play. Developed by Pavel Tsatsouline, the kettlebell guru popularizing them in North America, Strength Aerobics is based on heavy repeat training with adequate rest between bouts.    It will help you build strength, endurance, and muscle with limited training time.    In this episode, Coach Winston explains how to apply this training method to your workouts. Having used this technique extensively and with his training clients, it is one of his favourite ways to train when he doesn't have time to train strength and endurance separately.   Most of the workouts are only 20-30 minutes long, meaning that just about anyone can improve their fitness with a single kettlebell in their home.   When you are ready to start a coaching program, you can find out more at www.livewildradio.com/fitnesscoaching    Fitness Equipment We Endorse and Support Us:   Bells of Steel Adjustable Kettlebells -Get the world's smallest gym with a pair of adjustable kettlebells from Bell of Steel https://rb.gy/nccwf. When you want to improve your fitness, lose some body fat, and put on some muscle, it can be daunting to figure out what to do.   Over the last year, Winston did precisely that with a straightforward program using kettlebells and bodyweight exercises. It was slow but steady progressions and consistency that paid off with a loss of 25 lbs and adding a visible amount of muscle. By losing fat and adding muscle, he also set himself up for better health outcomes, as that combination is the recipe for improving metabolic health.   The work it took to make the physical changes also translated into a significant increase in strength and fitness.    We also talk about his changes to his diet and sleep to help create an optimal environment for improving health and body composition.   Little changes over time lead to significant changes in your health and fitness.   PROMO ALERT! In this episode, Winston answers a listener's question about how to train for long-distance hikes when you don't have much time. This is a common issue when we factor in jobs, kids, and the hectic nature of modern life. Combine this with the fact that many people sit for long periods at office jobs, and you have a recipe for injury when you have the opportunity to get out on long hikes.   Winston adapts a system he's been using to build a high fitness level with a minimal time commitment. The combination of Escalating Density Training with resisted hikes allows you to get big results without hours of training per week. And to top it off, you can do this at home with minimal equipment.    Resisted hikes are done by pulling a tire or sled behind you. You can make your own pulling tire pretty inexpensively by getting a worn out tire without a rim. You can find these at tire repair shops or sitting at the side of the road. Drill a hole in the tread and attach an eye bolt. This will make it easy to attach a rope for pulling. The most comfortable way to pull the tire is with a pulling harness used for pulling sleds for ice fishing. You can get these at any outdoor store that sells ice fishing equipment.   Escalating Density Training is where you increase the amount of work you do in a set amount of time. For instance you set a timer for 30 minutes and do as many sets of the prescribed exercises as you can in that time. Each workout try to get a little more work in. Over time you will see a dramatic increase in the amount of work you get done in the time period resulting in increased strength, conditioning and muscle mass.   See Training Program below.    PROMO ALERT! Don't allow yourself to get sloppy to just get the reps in.   Strength workouts 3 Days per week. Alternate Workout A and Workout B on non-consecutive days. First week will be A-B-A, followed by B-A-B.   Workout A 5-10 Body Rows 10 Goblet Squats 1 Turkish Get Up (Per Side) Workout B 5-10 Pushups 15 Two Handed Swings 50 Feet Suitcase Carries (Per Side)   Conditioning 2-3 X 30 minute sessions per week of tire pulling. 5 minutes of backward pulling to strengthen the knees followed by 25 minutes of forward dragging  Keep your heart rate aerobic but strive to cover more distance each week at the same heartrate. Just a couple of laps of a city block will often eat up this time as you aren't moving fast but are under constant tension.   This is a simple program but if you apply these principles diligently and consistently for 8 weeks you will see a difference in your fitness with less than 3 hours of actual work per week.   Hiking & Fitness Podcasts: Ep. 80: Solo Adventuring  Ep. 72: Winter Training for Summer Adventures Ep. 59: Let's Go Hiking  Ep. 46: Don't Let Winter Keep You Inside Ep. 7: Barbells and Backpacks  Ep. 53: Kettlebell Training For the Outdoor Athlete  Ep. 5: Micro Adventures Training / Fitness Articles: 13 Fitness Game Changers to Turbo-Charge Your Progress Training Secrets for the Outdoor Athlete Great Lakes Girya Kettlebell Review 9 Reasons Kettlebell Training is Optimal for Outdoor Athletes   Does Hiking Build Glutes Kettlebell Training for Hikers and Backpackers    Ruck Marching for Hiking Fitness and Fat Loss   #TrekTipTuesday - Ruck Marching For Hiking Fitness   Training for Outdoors, Simplified

Winston recorded a solo episode answering a listener's question about how he manages depression without prescription medication. He has been dealing with depression since his teenage years. It might have something to do with all the concussions he's had but either way, he hated how he felt on anti-depressants. It was going from being immensely sad all the time to feeling nothing and having no sex drive which is depressing on its own.     Being the nerd that he is, much study went into formulating a plan of how to not get dragged down into the abyss of blandness that came from the drugs while not succumbing to the darkness that is depression.    With much experimentation, he came up with a system that worked for him. It included exercise, mindfulness practice, journaling, nutrition, and supplementation along with talk therapy. We make no claims that what works for Winston will work for you, but it gives an outline of how one person was able to cope with a malfunctioning brain without drugs.       PROMO ALERT! If you've ever wondered how the crags and boulders we love came to be then give this episode a listen. We talk to Brendan Baars about crossing the border (He's American), finding and developing a new boulder wonderland near Elliot Lake, Ontario. From seeing the Eyeball cliff online to visiting with Gus Alexandropoulus, Brendan realized the area must hold more possibilities so he started exploring.    After many forays that came up empty, he came across an area that he called the Goldmine. Only a 2-5-minute approach from the road, he discovered a multitude of boulders hidden in the forest. But when it comes to creating a climbing area, finding the rock is only the beginning. From cleaning moss, dirt, and loose rock from the boulders to cutting trails so you can access them it takes a lot of work. Once you've cleaned the rock you then have to see if it is even climbable.    We had a great chat with Brendan about his climbing journey and how this crag came into existence. Today there's 150+ routes ranging from V0-V13. Go there and climb yourself! Check out the The Nooks Video about the area. In the first episode of our Longevity series, we delve into the negative effects of aging, a simple physical test that indicates your risk of mortality, and practical reasons why we are focused now on improving health for the future.    Our goal in this episode is to show how to hold the downward slide in physical performance at bay with exercise and weight loss. Getting stronger and building new physical skills is good for the body and mind while building endurance is good for the cardiovascular system. Both types of training help improve insulin sensitivity, which is a huge problem with modern foods and lack of movement. If you want a better quality of life now and in the future, give a listen and put the lessons into practice.   PROMO Alert! Looking for fitness equipment and a discount? Excuse the clickbait title but we want those eyeballs. After our episode about Catharine's weight loss and fitness transformation, we received questions about the details of how she accomplished it.    It isn't news to anyone that the majority of people in North America are overweight and the rate of obesity is rising. This comes with increased health risks and makes a lot of athletic activities like rock climbing and hiking mountains harder than they need to be. Imagine how much easier things would be if you were lighter and how much better your joints would feel.   We go in-depth about how to train, eat and change your lifestyle to achieve lasting fat loss for better health and athletic performance. It doesn't hurt that losing fat and building some muscle also make you look better in your underpants.   Discount Alert! Looking for fitness equipment and a discount? Catharine pilots this episode with the story of her five-year journey from obesity to fitness. Spurred by the end of her marriage and the deterioration of her knees, she needed to make a change if she wanted to be able to live the life she desired.   With kids she wanted to be able to play with and activities she yearned to do, the motivation to start was easy. Like most people, she ran into challenges of maintaining that motivation but learned how discipline and baby steps lead to amazing results.   In that time she lost nearly 60 pounds and went from being unable to walk down the stairs without support to climbing mountains and shedding on her mountain bike. The damage to her knees is still present but by becoming stronger and lighter she has made it a problem to manage rather than one that defines her capabilities.   Learn how she completely changed her lifestyle to make her physical transformation inevitable. Training, nutrition, and a change in mental outlook all work together to slowly but surely achieve the results she was after.   Since Winston has been her training partner and coach for the whole period he chimes in with the technical details of how the lifestyle changes were enacted and why.   Show Notes:   Here's some other LiveWild Radio resources on the topic.  Podcasts: Ep. 58 - Fitness for Mountain Biking  Ep. 56 - Fitness Game Changers  Ep. 53: Kettlebell Training for the Outdoor Athlete Ep. 34: How to Feel Better with Allison Gaudet Ep. 32: Quarantine Fitness Ep. 20: Injury Prevention and Rehab with Allison Gaudet Ep. 7: Barbells and Backpacks Blogs: 9 Reasons Kettlebell Training is Optimal for Outdoor Athletes 13 Fitness Game Changers to Turbo Charge Your Progress  Does Hiking Build Glutes Ruck Marching for Hiking Fitness and Fat Loss Training for Outdoors, Simplified LiveWild Radio's Favourite Exercises Training Secrets for the Outdoor Athlete Great Lakes Girya Kettlebell Review Kettlebell Training for Hikers and Backpackers 9 Reasons Kettlebell Training is Optimal for the Outdoor Athlete

During the last year, people have either made fitness a central focus in their lives or completely fallen off the boat. For people in the latter group, it isn't too late to make movement part of your lifestyle. And for the former give a listen and incorporate some of the ideas we discuss to keep making progress.   Rolling lockdowns have lead to fitness challenges, online follow-along workouts, and more butt exercises than you can shake a stick at, This can help with motivation but just because you are putting in the effort doesn't mean you are going to get optimal results. In this episode, we talk about fitness strategies and techniques that have been game-changers.    With Winston's experience as both an athlete and coach combined with Catharine experiencing the best fitness of her life when most people are heading downhill, there are a lot of ideas that you can put into practice to get fitter, faster, stronger, and leaner.   For even more information see our article 13 Fitness Game Changers to Turbo Charge Your Progress    Looking for fitness equipment and a discount?
