Het talent achter de prestatie – Teus Baars over verbinding, vertrouwen en het Bourgondische ondernemen In deze aflevering van Talentgesprekken ontmoet Jan Prins een man die letterlijk en figuurlijk in beweging is: Teus Baars, oprichter van het creatieve bureau No Such Conpany en deelnemer aan de loodzware Tour for Life – een fietstocht van ruim duizend kilometer naar Nederland om geld in te zamelen voor kankeronderzoek. Een bijzondere setting voor een talentgesprek, waarin niet alleen de benen, maar vooral het hart van de ondernemer spreekt. Wat meteen opvalt: Teus is een rasverbinder. Waar hij ook komt, hij maakt contact. Tijdens de Tour praat hij met iedereen – van collega-fietsers tot onbekenden aan de ontbijttafel – en na een paar dagen kent werkelijk iedereen hem. Dat is geen toeval: in zijn TMA-profiel scoort Teus extreem hoog op sociabiliteit en contactgerichtheid. Verbinding maken is voor hem geen vaardigheid, maar een tweede natuur. Jan ziet hoe moeiteloos Teus met mensen in gesprek raakt. “Jij bent iemand die met iedereen praat,” zegt hij. “Na drie dagen kent iedereen jou.” En dat klopt: Teus geniet van het contact, van de verhalen en van de gezelligheid. “Het zijn geen ingewikkelde gesprekken,” vertelt hij, “maar wel leuke. En vaak zit je zomaar een paar uur met iemand te kletsen. Dat vind ik gewoon gezellig.” Die openheid levert hem veel op. Niet per se klanten — dat is nooit zijn doel — maar vooral inspiratie, energie en nieuwe perspectieven. Voor Teus is het simpel: door nieuwsgierig te blijven naar anderen, leer je zelf het meest. Toch heeft die verbindende kracht ook een keerzijde. Als ondernemer vindt Teus het soms lastig om harde beslissingen te nemen, juist omdat hij graag aardig blijft. Hij leerde omgaan met dat spanningsveld via wat hij zelf de ‘dreun-kreun-steun'-methode noemt: eerst eerlijk het slechte nieuws brengen (de dreun), dan ruimte geven voor de reactie (de kreun), en vervolgens samen vooruitkijken (de steun). Een aanpak die hem helpt om menselijkheid en duidelijkheid te combineren. Geld verdienen of winst maximaliseren is nooit zijn hoofddoel geweest. Teus noemt zichzelf een Bourgondische ondernemer: iemand die gul investeert in mensen, groei en plezier. Hij weet dat niet alles rendeert, maar ziet dat als onderdeel van ondernemen. “De helft van wat je uitgeeft aan reclame is weggegooid geld,” zegt hij met een glimlach, “maar je weet nooit welke helft. Met mensen is dat precies zo.” Als ontwerper heeft Teus een scherp oog voor schoonheid en beleving. “Het moet kloppen,” zegt hij. Dat gevoel voor vorm en balans kreeg hij van zijn vader, die architect was. Functioneel moet het zijn, maar ook mooi – want schoonheid bepaalt de beleving. Opvallend is het contrast tussen zijn ontspannen ondernemerschap en zijn sportieve fanatisme. Op de fiets kan hij simpelweg geen rust nemen. Zodra er een groep voorbij raast, gaat de turbo aan. “Misschien,” zegt hij lachend, “moet ik dat fanatisme wat vaker meenemen naar kantoor.” Wat uiteindelijk blijft hangen, is het beeld van een man die leeft vanuit vertrouwen, vriendschap en verbinding. Een ondernemer die laat zien dat menselijkheid en succes uitstekend samengaan. En precies dáár — tussen de hartslag van de fietser en de ziel van de ondernemer — ligt het talent van Teus Baars: verbinding als levenshouding. But what exactly is the information that is exchanged? I will argue that the GNW provides the substrate for the spread of selection signals and use this perspective to refine the distinction between access and phenomenal consciousness.Access consciousness corresponds to the information currently circulating within the GNW. In perception, this is the information selected by object-based attention, enabling a degree of representational flexibility that would otherwise not be attainable. In thought, access consciousness corresponds to the attended content of working memory, i.e. the items that can be actively transformed, combined, or used to retrieve associations. Phenomenal consciousness, by contrast, refers to the set of representations that are not yet part of the GNW, but that could be attended next because they are captured by the senses or because they are in an unattended memory form.I will illustrate these ideas in perception and memory. Perceptual experiments address the construction of coherent object representations through the spread of object-based attention, which at a neuronal level, corresponds to the spread of enhanced activity. In these studies, access consciousness aligns with object-based attention, and the GNW acts as the scaffold that allows selection signals to label all features of a perceptual object. This binding mechanism is incremental, time-consuming and explains why we consciously perceive unified, multi-feature objects.When considering memory, I will contrast iconic memory, supported by transient activity in early visual cortex, to working memory representations in higher areas that are maintained by persistent firing. Items in access awareness are attended within working memory and show stronger and more stable activity than non-attended items. I will show how the spread of selection signals among attended working memory items through the GNW supports conscious cognitive functions, such as resolving pronouns during reading and the retrieval of associations between concepts.Together, these findings suggest a revised view of the relationship between attention and consciousness, positioning the GNW as the orchestrator of distributed neuronal representations through the spread of attentional selection signals.

We think of the cortex in terms of anatomical regions, but the cortex works as a whole. Static, gross anatomical divisions are superseded by the dynamical connectome of cortex. This holistic viewpoint is detailed in the recent paper in the Journal Frontiers in Psychology: Consciousness Research, titled "Global Workspace Theory & Prefrontal Cortex: Recent Developments" (Baars, Geld & Kozma, 2021), which we discuss in this episode.  A wide range of experimental and theoretical studies in the field of consciousness emphasize the complex and rapid interactivity of numerous regions and connectivities in the cerebral cortex. That dynamical view of the cortex should give us pause about proposing dichotomies that may not be in evidence. This paper aims to clarify some empirical questions that have been raised, and review evidence that the prefrontal and posterior regions of the brain support dynamic global workspace functions, in agreement with several other authors. If you've ever wondered how the crags and boulders we love came to be then give this episode a listen. We talk to Brendan Baars about crossing the border (He's American), finding and developing a new boulder wonderland near Elliot Lake, Ontario. From seeing the Eyeball cliff online to visiting with Gus Alexandropoulus, Brendan realized the area must hold more possibilities so he started exploring.    After many forays that came up empty, he came across an area that he called the Goldmine. Only a 2-5-minute approach from the road, he discovered a multitude of boulders hidden in the forest. But when it comes to creating a climbing area, finding the rock is only the beginning. From cleaning moss, dirt, and loose rock from the boulders to cutting trails so you can access them it takes a lot of work. Once you've cleaned the rock you then have to see if it is even climbable.    We had a great chat with Brendan about his climbing journey and how this crag came into existence.
