Raise your hand if you like chaos and confusion! No hands? That's what I thought. The world can be a very tumultuous and confusing place filled with strife, division, and conflict leading to war, the ultimate form of violence. There are two types of violence, active and passive. Active violence uses force whereas passive violence uses words and thoughts which seem a lot less harmful, right? Wrong! Words are important and can hurt so deeply leading to acts of active violence. Yet, where do we spend most of our time? In our thoughts. Thoughts cannot be seen by others, only known by the thinker. If violent thoughts occupy one's mind, such thoughts can guide one to commit acts of violence. Passive violence is the fuel that feeds the fire of active violence leading to riots and wars. We all must look inward and take note of our own words and thoughts. Awareness is key in order to correct ourselves and it starts with the individual in order to propagate in society to build a culture of peace.Email the show: thevignatis@gmail.comIntro Song: "Gypsy Rock'n'Roll" by The VignatisOutro Song: "World Peace Ride" by The VignatisDisclaimer: The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed are the speakers' own and should not be considered, including but not limited to, legal, health, psychological, or spiritual advice. In the most trying of situations, we oftentimes find the most comfort and support from our friends. We construct our social ecosystems carefully by hand selecting those that fulfill our various needs. From short-term acquaintances we see for humor, light fun and socializing, to long-term pillars of strength who help navigate us through the loss of a loved one, friendships are the gold in our lives. They are the gold that we choose, not a relation by genetics. Cherish them and nurture them. Your friends have your back, not stab you in yours. Let your intuition guide you for a gut check to filter our those that do not enhance your life. It will be the greatest gift you give yourself. Karma is certainly a very complex concept, yet is very simplistic in its definition. Society is becoming more and more aware of karma, as we see the word in pop culture on t-shirts, coffee mugs, memes and used in conversation. Whether or not one has a full understanding of its meaning is not important. As in the law of gravity, it exists whether you believe it or not. Just try jumping off of your roof and see what happens. It's guaranteed you will not fly. The Nine Consciousnesses is a Nichiren Buddhist point of view explaining the nine levels that comprise a person's experience of life from how the body reacts to the external world, factoring in the inner workings of the mind that result one's actions. It forms the foundations for one's life, incapable of being tarnished by the previous eight levels. It is the amala or purest level and the source for spiritual activity. Some may look at couples, or husbands and wives that work together and think, “Aww, that is so cute and must be so easy and fun and not like work at all.” Well, not exactly. No one enjoys suffering however, it is a fact of life. From the time we are born it is inevitable that we each will experience suffering whether it be physical, emotional, financial, or spiritual, among others. We have the choice to accept that which we cannot change, or strive to change the things we cannot accept. The Buddhist concept of The Four Noble Truths is a means to spark the awareness of suffering as the nature of merely existing, its causes, and how to carry on in spite of it. Yes, it is a challenge. As human beings we are born with the built-in guarantee that we will commit mistakes, mishaps, blunders, faults, whatever you want to call it. This concept of The Eight Errors is from early Buddhist teachings with the goal of setting forth the foundation for creating internal freedom or awakening. These eight aspects represent “wrong” actions that run counter to someone who lives in accordance with the dharma or the inherent nature of reality which outline correct behavior. As with everything in the Universe, therefore, each of the eight aspects has a positive or “correct” counterpart collectively referred to as The Noble Eightfold Path. Simple in their description yet at times difficult to implement, it is important to view both sides and choose the road toward positivity. If you are above ground and breathing, you have most likely experienced some form of rejection. Whether personal, professional, or otherwise, it hurts doesn't it? If you have never lifted weights in a gym before and you go full power on the first day, it hurts afterward, doesn't it? When we process and recover from that muscle fatigue and stay at it, we get stronger. Rejection is the same. Learning to accept and manage rejection is a skill. We have a choice to either develop that skill to grow and move forward or stay complacent and unfulfilled. Join us as we explain five possible levels one may experience in the face of rejection as well as some actions one can take to cope with or handle the rejection leading to the path of growth and strength (listed below): Acknowledge rejection is part of life. Meeting resistance builds strength Accept it, don't deny it. Delusion creates continuous grief and disappointment Digest your emotions toward positive management of them. Taking it out on others creates more conflict, especially for you Maintain your health and be compassionate with yourself. Be mindful of your physical health as well as your mental health. Exercise will feed both the physical and mental in positive ways due to the release of serotonin, the happy hormone Never let rejection define who you are as a person. Not everyone likes dark chocolate just like not everyone will like or connect with you. Stay true to yourself with authenticity and you will attract those who appreciate you Embrace growth and view the rejection objectively. Observe your contribution to the situation and see what you can learn from it. Do the work. The human mind has a preoccupation with time; the progression of events contained in the three components of past, present, and future. Whether longing for “back in the day”, “live now”, or “I can't wait for that to happen”, we each tend to be more oriented to one component over the other two by our simple, human default settings. Excess orientation to any of these can be detrimental to our lives. We interpret time linearly with a finite beginning and end which can be terrifying for many reasons. However, there is another way to interpret time from a Buddhist perspective. It is time without beginning and time without end based on the law of cause and effect and the eternity of life. Don't obsess about the past or long for the future. Being an artist is not a label, it is what one does. It is not a carefree, easy life devoid of responsibility. On the contrary. It is a high level of commitment to the work often accompanied with great sacrifice, uncertainty, doubt, and fear, yet do the work regardless. It is ceaseless dedication with the goal of creating works that move or inspire others. To the public eye it may seem glamorous however, it is 99% grind and 1% shine. Based on excerpts from Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted Orland, we asked three committed, working artists from different fields some very profound questions covering topics of fear, doubt, insecurity, and limitations, etc. Their responses may be quite surprising. At times we human beings need reminding as to what exactly decency means. There are societal rules and regulations for traffic, courts of law, schools, hospitals, and even the community swimming pool, as well as religious laws or lists like The 10 Commandments in Judaism/Christianity, or the 75 Good Manners in the Quran for the religion of Islam. These are fundamental guidelines to maintain levels of respect and kindness for the benefit of all. The Fourteen Slanders are no exception. From the perspective of Buddhism, these Fourteen Slanders are offenses that we as human beings commit which are detrimental to ourselves personal growth and can affect the lives of others by reducing the creation of value. The objective is to learn to recognize them and implement a remedy in order to create value for ourselves and others. It all begins with the self. Review the below list and ask yourself, "How many of these do I commit on a daily basis?" Join our discussion as we assess each slander as well as offer a remedy to counter each of them. 1. Arrogance 2. Negligence 3. Egotistical Judgment 4. Shallow, Self-Satisfying Understanding 5. Attachment to Earthly Desires 6. Lack of Seeking Spirit 7. Not Believing 8. Aversion 9. Doubt 10. At some point in our lives we have heard the term "melting pot", especially if you are an American. What exactly is a melting pot and what is the difference between a melting pot and multiculturalism? It is nearly impossible in modern times to be a homogenous society. If you enjoy different types of foods, music, art, landscape, clothing, etc., then forget about being homogenous. You cannot have it both ways. Sure, there may be comfort in sameness to some, however, what kind of growth and expansion does that offer? The knowledge of other cultures and traditions expands our minds and spirits as human beings. It demands compassion and understanding to that which may be unknown or feared due to the simple lack of knowledge. Our current reality is quite divided yet there just may be a remedy to heal this division if we all make some conscious efforts. Listen for yourself. You just may learn and thing or two. The Industrial Revolution, The French Revolution, and the ongoing Technological Revolution all have the common element of change. Life is constantly in motion gradually developing into something different than it was just moments before. So, can the same concept be applied to the human being? The answer is YES. It is called Human Revolution. Human Revolution is a term used by Josei Toda, a businessman and practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism, who lived through the vast devastation of WWII in Japan. He describes Human Revolution as the transformation of oneself at the very core; a transformation in the way one lives, in order to develop clear awareness of one's purpose or mission in life. It is not something that is unusual or special. It is simply a matter of opening one's eyes, looking beyond ordinary concerns, and strive to commit actions for a higher reason and purpose. Join us in our discussion as we briefly examine famous revolutions in society, then offer an explanation of Human Revolution and how you may work toward achieving the life-time task of inner transformation for yourselves, in order for you to become your best you. Sometimes we can be swayed by our circumstances as easily as the wind blows. Life is much easier and fulfilling when we find a balance, an emotional equilibrium to help us find middle ground. The 8 Winds are the two groups of four conditions, favorable and unfavorable, that prevent us from advancing along the correct path to growth or enlightenment. Join us in our discussion as we break them down, explain their interconnectedness, and how they can lead to improvement and/or deterioration in our lives. We offer some simple tools that we use to not be influenced by these conditions, and to assist in achieving emotional equilibrium and wisdom. Season 3 Episode 1 just may answer your questions as to how and why your surroundings may quickly change for the better or worse without you even moving an inch. How can that be? Your surroundings are simply a reflection of your inner state of life. It is all in our perception, partly due to deep karmic ties that compel us view things the way that we do, as well as attract that which we have or that which we experience. Esho-funi is a Japanese term meaning the oneness of life and its environment, the non-duality of life and its environment, or "life, its environment, but not two". This is a phrase we've long heard and would you believe, it is debatable. Gee Rabe, Lecturer of Ethnomusicology at Cal State Northridge, accomplished accordionist/steel drum player, composer/arranger, and bandleader, joins us in a discussion clarifying many questions about this topic delving deeper than just the surface of this statement. In the eyes of Ethnomusicology, it is far too complex to make such a simple statement. Music is, however, a universal art form that is somehow infused in cultures and societies worldwide.
