On the 5th of February this year, the who's who of the global music industry gathered at a venue in Los Angeles, for the 65th Grammy Awards ceremony. Among those in attendance were three South African musicians, Wouter Kellerman, Nomcebo Zikode and Zakes Banwtini. They were nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category, along with several other artists. Surprise! Surprise! Their song, Bayethe, bagged the award. As they touched down at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, they were received by hundreds of jubilant music lovers who waved their South African flags. That's the power of music. When the definitive history of cross-cultural musical fusions and hybrids is written, there will be an honored place for the congruence of Indian classical and ambient-electronic music. Of all the experiments that were attempted after electronic instruments matured to the point of viability in the mid 20th century, this combination was one of the earliest and most successful. Synthesizers expanded the role of microtones and drones in Indian music, while raga and tala—the traditional melodic and rhythm systems of Indian classical music—brought a welcome sophistication to electronic music. It's an area we've explored since the earliest days of this program. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another journey where Indian classical meets ambient/trance, on a program called "INDO-TRONICA 4." Music is by DAVID HELPLING with NIDHI BHATMULEY and BENJY WERTHEIMER, DAVID PARSONS, WOUTER KELLERMAN & DAVID ARKENSTONE, DJ CHEB I SABBAH, MYCHAEL DANNA, BEN LEINBACH & JAI UTTAL, and AL GROMER KHAN. ‘LED BY THE LIGHT' conceptualized in 2017, is an album of traditional Christmas carols; an essay with global musical flavours. The arrangements encompass energetic rhythms, a splash of festive chants, sargams, percussion et al, bringing on new shades and hues in the embellishments. As with any recording production, this too was a work in progress as we explored the suggestions made and even ventured down paths less trod. Musicians came aboard once arrangements were in place, and every one of them gave of their expertise, adding their own special touch to the album that comprises a dozen carols, including a medley. Yes, it's different! The bansuri and smooth strings weave into the familiar strains of ‘Silent Night', sargams decorate the tranquil flow of ‘Away in a Manger', spirited percussion finds company in ‘God rest ye Merry Gentlemen' and more. Tradition remains tradition, while it absorbs and integrates the subtleties of the lands it traverses… as the Magi followed the star, as the shepherds heard the angels, as the radiant beams shone from the manger, as that cold, wintry night brings Light to the world, year after year. This Hallowed Season heralds that same Peace, Love and Joy, as the world rises once again… world without end! This record features renowned musicians who have performed and recorded with some of the finest artists in India and around the world. We have had the privilege to share stage with them and are indeed honoured and grateful for their impeccable, magic touch on ‘Led by the Light'. Dominic D'Cruz is a musician based in Bengaluru, India, who over the last thirty years, has done everything connected with music - performance, composition, songwriting, teaching, and recording… even worked in a music store. His music has received accolades – finalist in the SDG Action Award for ‘My Earth Songs' – a collaboration with Grammy® Award winning artist Ricky Kej and Lonnie Park, Outstanding Lyricist Award in the Redemptorists' Music Video Festival, an Akademia Award, and a Global Music Award. He played bass guitar on two Grammy® Nominated albums - ‘Love Language' by Wouter Kellerman, and ‘Divine Tides' by Stewart Copeland & Ricky Kej, and continues to work in the studio and on stage in varied roles – bassist, guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, choir conductor among others. Jerusha Lawrence-D'Cruz started singing in church choral groups at a young age and developed a keen interest in harmony. She has been a part of Neecia Majolly's choirs since 2004 – ‘The Camerata', ‘The Majolly Music Trust Choir', ‘Madrigals, Etc.' and ‘Femusica' – with notable performances including ‘Carmina Burana', Mozart's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, traditional folk music and more. She has been a part of collaborations with musicians from various parts of the world including Maria Forsström, Devissaro, and concerts such as ‘Tales of the Night' conducted by Françoise Lasserre, and ‘Beethoven's 9th Symphony' performed under the baton of Vijay Upadhyaya. Jerusha has also performed with the ‘Ricky Kej World Ensemble', the ‘Bangalore Broadway Company', and fronted ‘My Earth Band' at UB City for the 70th anniversary of UNICEF in India. We had the pleasure of interviewing Lonnie Park and Grammy® winner Ricky Kej over Zoom video! "Ricky Kej and an amazing group of musicians are joining us to inspire. They're calling on us all to imagine a better world for every child."– Henrietta H. Fore, Executive Director, UNICEFIn June of this year, more than 25 million viewers in 75 countries watched the My Earth Songs Virtual Live Concert, a global initiative with Vivendi in support of UNICEF COVID-19 relief for children. Music from this remarkable family concert, spearheaded by Lonnie Park and the Earth Band and Grammy® winner Ricky Kej, features an all-star cast of Grammy winners and was then released as an album titled My Earth Songs on August 28, 2020, with all proceeds going to UNICEF.Artists represented on My Earth Songs include six Grammy winners from around the world: United Nations Global Humanitarian Artist Ricky Kej from India, legendary Senegalese singer Baaba Maal (voice of the Wakandan soundtrack for the Black Panther movie), U.S. family musicians Lucy Kalantari and Jon Samson, South African flutist Wouter Kellerman, and two-time Grammy winner Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea. Also featured are the Earth Band’s primary artist/frontman, Grammy-nominated American singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lonnie Park; Grammy-nominated Canadian flutist Ron Korb; and Global Music Award winning Indian bassist and composer Dominic D'Cruz. My Earth Songs delivers complex topics in bite-sized chunks packed with meaning that children can effortlessly assimilate. Every one of these fun, positive, and super singalong-able songs has a catchy tune with simple, memorable lyrics. Focusing on what’s needed to ensure a clean, green world for generations to come, each track was inspired by one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.“My work with Ricky Kej has seen us performing at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Geneva, the WHO headquarters, and at UNICEF and UNESCO events,” explains My Earth Songs’ co-creator, Lonnie Park. “As we witnessed complicated issues playing out on the world stage, it became apparent that getting adults to adopt new practices is difficult, but if we could teach the children early about taking care of each other and the planet, it could literally change the world. The best way we knew how to make that happen was through music.”“Ever since I won my Grammy Award in 2015, I have dedicated my life and music to creating environmental consciousness and climate change awareness,” says Ricky Kej. “My Earth Songs aims at enlightening children through music, igniting in them a spark to spread consciousness among everyone with whom they interact. This young movement will spur a revolution to restore our planet and help it breathe easy again!”My Earth Songs sets the pace with its sparkling, energetic opening track, “Shine Your Light,” which features the Mzansi Youth Choir, an ensemble that was established to provide opportunities for underprivileged South African children, particularly in Soweto. Other highlights include the multicultural “Born from the Land,” with lead singer Lonnie Park sharing the spotlight with famed Senegalese vocalist Baaba Maal, who presents soaring reflections in his native Fula language. “She Can Do,” a song that celebrates breaking down gender-based stereotypes, features Lucy Kalantari in a vocal performance loaded with verve. “In the Waterworld” showcases the jewel-like Mexican mariachi perfection of Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea. With his elegant phrasing, Jon Samson really illustrates the poetry within the relaxed ballad “Breathe Life,” which is beautifully complimented by Ron Korb’s Bansuri flute. “Bicycle Day” celebrates the world’s most efficient non-polluting mode of transportation through the artistry of famed flutist Wouter Kellerman and the clarity and storytelling confidence of Lonnie Park’s vocals.Visit: https://www.myearthsongs.com/We want to hear from you!
