You interact with about two-thirds of the elements of the periodic table every day. Some, like carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, make up our bodies and the air we breathe. Yet there is also a class of elements so unstable they can only be made in a lab. These superheavy elements are the purview of a small group stretching the boundaries of chemistry. Can they extend the periodic table beyond the 118 in it now? Find out scientists are using particle accelerators to create element 120 and why they've skipped over element 119. Plus, if an element exists for only a fraction of a second in the lab, can we still say that counts as existing? Guests: Mark Miodownik – professor of materials and society at the University of College London and the author of “It's a Gas: The Sublime and Elusive Elements That Expand Our World.” Kit Chapman – Science historian at Falmouth University, author of “Superheavy; Making and Breaking the Periodic Table.” Jennifer Pore – Research Scientist of Heavy Elements at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Making deep learning perform real algorithms with Category Theory (Andrew Dudzik, Petar Velichkovich, Taco Cohen, Bruno Gavranović, Paul Lessard)

We often think of Large Language Models (LLMs) as all-knowing, but as the team reveals, they still struggle with the logic of a second-grader. Why can't ChatGPT reliably add large numbers? Why does it "hallucinate" the laws of physics? The answer lies in the architecture. This episode explores how *Category Theory* —an ultra-abstract branch of mathematics—could provide the "Periodic Table" for neural networks, turning the "alchemy" of modern AI into a rigorous science. In this deep-dive exploration, *Andrew Dudzik*, *Petar Velichkovich*, *Taco Cohen*, *Bruno Gavranović*, and *Paul Lessard* join host *Tim Scarfe* to discuss the fundamental limitations of today's AI and the radical mathematical framework that might fix them.TRANSCRIPT:https://app.rescript.info/public/share/LMreunA-BUpgP-2AkuEvxA7BAFuA-VJNAp2Ut4MkMWk---Key Insights in This Episode:* *The "Addition" Problem:* *Andrew Dudzik* explains why LLMs don't actually "know" math—they just recognize patterns. When you change a single digit in a long string of numbers, the pattern breaks because the model lacks the internal "machinery" to perform a simple carry operation.* *Beyond Alchemy:* deep learning is currently in its "alchemy" phase—we have powerful results, but we lack a unifying theory. Category Theory is proposed as the framework to move AI from trial-and-error to principled engineering. [00:13:49]* *Algebra with Colors:* To make Category Theory accessible, the guests use brilliant analogies—like thinking of matrices as *magnets with colors* that only snap together when the types match. This "partial compositionality" is the secret to building more complex internal reasoning. [00:09:17]* *Synthetic vs. Analytic Math:* *Paul Lessard* breaks down the philosophical shift needed in AI research: moving from "Analytic" math (what things are made of) to "Synthetic" math [00:23:41]---Why This Matters for AGIIf we want AI to solve the world's hardest scientific problems, it can't just be a "stochastic parrot." It needs to internalize the rules of logic and computation. By imbuing neural networks with categorical priors, researchers are attempting to build a future where AI doesn't just predict the next word—it understands the underlying structure of the universe.---TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 The Failure of LLM Addition & Physics00:01:26 Tool Use vs Intrinsic Model Quality00:03:07 Efficiency Gains via Internalization00:04:28 Geometric Deep Learning & Equivariance00:07:05 Limitations of Group Theory00:09:17 Category Theory: Algebra with Colors00:11:25 The Systematic Guide of Lego-like Math00:13:49 The Alchemy Analogy & Unifying Theory00:15:33 Information Destruction & Reasoning00:18:00 Pathfinding & Monoids in Computation00:20:15 System 2 Reasoning & Error Awareness00:23:31 Analytic vs Synthetic Mathematics00:25:52 Morphisms & Weight Tying Basics00:26:48 2-Categories & Weight Sharing Theory00:28:55 Higher Categories & Emergence00:31:41 Compositionality & Recursive Folds00:34:05 Syntax vs Semantics in Network Design00:36:14 Homomorphisms & Multi-Sorted Syntax00:39:30 The Carrying Problem & Hopf FibrationsPetar Veličković (GDM)https://petar-v.com/Paul Lessardhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-roy-lessard/Bruno Gavranovićhttps://www.brunogavranovic.com/Andrew Dudzik (GDM)https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-dudzik-222789142/---REFERENCES:Model:[00:01:05] Veohttps://deepmind.google/models/veo/[00:01:10] Geniehttps://deepmind.google/blog/genie-3-a-new-frontier-for-world-models/Paper:[00:04:30] Geometric Deep Learning Blueprinthttps://arxiv.org/abs/2104.13478https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIZB1hIJ4u8[00:16:45] AlphaGeometryhttps://arxiv.org/abs/2401.08312[00:16:55] AlphaCodehttps://arxiv.org/abs/2203.07814[00:17:05] FunSearchhttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06924-6[00:37:00] Attention Is All You Needhttps://arxiv.org/abs/1706.03762[00:43:00] Categorical Deep Learninghttps://arxiv.org/abs/2402.15332

My guest on today's show is cofounder of Thriviae and Workplace Performance Strategist, Luke Mulcahy.   For the last few years Luke and his team have been developing a revolutionary platform that help support organisations in tackling some of the most pressing challenges of the modern workplace.   His recently published academic paper and research report introduces the Periodic Table of Workplace Thriving, which I have to say really spoke to my love of order and organisation. It structures 24 enablers and over 100 measurable elements that shape wellbeing, performance and development across organisations.   We began by focusing on the tricky topic of PURPOSE. What this really means, why it's important, and some of the challenges in articulating it as well as creating teams where there is a shared sense of purpose.   As predicted, our conversation ran into a number of different topics including belonging, multi-generational workforces, burnout and team cohesion.   If you want to find out more about Luke and the work he is doing you can find him on LinkedIn and his website, and I recommend having a read of the white paper and academic paper if it's a topic you're interested in!   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lukemulcahy/ Thriviae website: https://www.thriviae.com Articles: https://www.thriviae.com/thought-leadership/

Recorded live at London's Natural History Museum on November 24, 2025. Breaking Bad fanatics, have a fresh pair of trousers at the ready—Bryan Cranston delivers an unforgettable conversation packed with behind-the-scenes stories from his years playing Walter White. He shares how DEA agents taught him the fundamentals of meth production, what he learned shadowing a USC chemistry professor to prepare for the role, and the surprising science details the show actually got right. A Hollywood legend through and through, Cranston does not disappoint. Joining him is the eminent Alan Hart—mineralogist, science historian, and keeper of extraordinary knowledge about the material world. Hart breaks down the real science behind Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, the intricate chemistry of organic and inorganic crystal structures, and the remarkable history of how the Periodic Table came to be. In his lecture Biological Nature to What End?, Dr Bret Weinstein explores the principles of evolution as a lens for understanding human nature, culture, and the pursuit of well-being. Moving from the biotic and abiotic universes to the subtle dynamics of kin and group selection, he reveals how traits emerge, persist, and change across generations. Weinstein challenges the conflation of data collection with science, advocating for predictive models that embrace paradox, complexity, and long-term explanatory power. Throughout the talk, he considers how evolutionary patterns shape morality, culture, and human creativity, demonstrating how the principles of biology illuminate both the substrate of our nature and the universals that underlie human civilization. Bret is later joined by his wife, Heather, to respond to audience questions exploring the relationship between scientific insight and the aesthetic and conceptual modes of the arts, underscoring the complementary ways humans discern meaning and pattern in the world. Dan Saladino explores new science that's revealing the complexity hidden within our food.In New York City he meets the team mapping previously unknown edible compounds in fruits and vegetables, many of which are thought to have health benefits. Will delving deeper into the 'dark matter' of food make it possible to produce food that's better for both us and the planet? Also in the programme is Franco Fubini, founder of the food businesses and author of In Search of The Perfect Peach, who for 20 years has been in search of ingredients with exceptional flavour. It's through flavour, Fubini believes, that we can create a food system that's better for us and also the planet. Dan also meets Dan Kitteridge, who, through the Bio-nutrient Association, is convinced that quality of food, and its nutrient density is dependent on the quality of the soil microbiome it grows in. Michael Ferrari is Chief Scientific and Investment Officer at AlphaGeo. We focused on how resilience varies across geographies and what this means for long term regional investability. Accompanying this discussion is their web app. This is confronting. If you change the time slider to "End of Century", most of the world is red, indicating significant physical climate risk.Particularly alarming is when you change the toggle to "Resilience Adjusted Risk". This intensifies the red color in some parts of the world - Sub Saharan Africa, India, Pakistan, Yemen, Papua New Guinea and along the coast from French Guiana to Venezuela. This indicates that these countries have low resilience and limited capacity to combat the effects of climate change. There are implications here for population migrations, as illustrated by AlphaGeo here with regard to Africa. The conversation then turned to another app, produced in collaboration with Washington Post. Here one can input your location in the US and you will be given useful information from the perspective of a property investor on long term risk and resilience. Parag Khanna is the CEO. He has given several interesting TED talks such as how megacities are changing the map of the world.Perhaps the most fascinating idea of all though from Parag is Periodic Table of States, details here. For this analysis it all comes down to stability and they rank Eritrea as worst with a score of 2.36. They rank Switzerland best at 21.77. Overall, a fascinating crash course from Michael on the kind of spatial finance I like - using geography to inform investment decisions. It was a case of meeting my idols. I am glad we were able to hit it off and am keen to see what develops.

Which countries are best positioned to thrive in the 21st century? No, it's not Denmark. Nor China. According to Parag Khanna, the Singapore based geo-strategist, the three countries that top what he calls The Periodic Table of States are Germany, Japan and Switzerland. And the United States of America, Khanna says, going against conventional wisdom, isn't far behind. Khanna's analysis describes a "post-Westphalian world" where non-state actors like corporations and diasporas hold significant influence. Khanna challenges the more conventional rankings of countries by incorporating climate resilience, governance quality, and economic stability alongside traditional metrics into his Periodic Table. The 5 KEEN ON AMERICA takeaways from our conversation with Khanna* Traditional power metrics are insufficient for measuring state stability - Khanna's "Periodic Table of States" incorporates factors like climate resilience, governance quality, and institutional effectiveness alongside conventional metrics.* Small states often outperform large powers in stability - Switzerland, Germany, and Japan top the rankings while large nations like India, Brazil, and Russia fall into the second tier.* We live in a "post-Westphalian" world where non-state actors (corporations like Google, diaspora networks, and even organized crime) wield significant power beyond traditional nation-state frameworks.* Migration management varies significantly across governance systems - Khanna notes that non-democratic states like UAE and Singapore have effectively managed high immigration rates while democratic nations have struggled politically with migration issues.* A "neo-Hanseatic league" of small, innovative states (like Estonia, Singapore, and Israel) is emerging as a powerful network outside traditional alliance structures, forming their own connections through academic exchanges, free labor mobility, and economic partnerships.Parag Khanna is Founder & CEO of AlphaGeo, the leading AI-powered geospatial analytics platform. When it comes to hydration and performance, electrolytes are often mentioned—but not always understood. Many people believe they're just for athletes or that any sports drink provides them. Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation out there. In this episode, we'll clear up common misconceptions, explain the real benefits of electrolytes, and guide you to the best sources for proper hydration. What Are Electrolytes and Why Are They Important? First, let's go over just a little bit of science: There are 94 Natural Elements of the periodic table that consist of foundational solid, liquid and gaseous substances referred to as ‘elements'.  From a nutritional perspective, the solid and liquid elements can be divided into “Minerals” and “Trace Elements”. Those elements that chemically dissolve in water become ELECTROLYTES because the water makes them electrically charged (positive and negative). During Evolution the animal species (including humans) inherited their body fluids and electrolytes from the ocean.  The oceans contain nearly all 78 minerals and trace elements of the Periodic Table of the Elements as electrolytes. A small number of elements do not dissolve in water so they do not form charged electrolytes.  So, the proportions of electrolytes in the body fluids are the same as they are in the ocean. They're just diluted. Electrolytes are essential minerals that carry an electric charge and help maintain various bodily functions.  The primary electrolytes include: Sodium – Regulates fluid balance and nerve function Potassium – Supports muscle contractions and heart health Magnesium – Aids muscle relaxation, nerve signaling, and energy production Calcium – Important for bone strength, muscle movement, and nerve function Chloride – Helps with fluid balance and stomach acid production Phosphate – Plays a role in energy storage and bone health These minerals are vital for maintaining hydration, muscle function, nerve signaling, blood pressure, and overall cellular processes. Without the right balance of electrolytes, you may experience muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness, and even severe health complications... I asked Google, “What are thoughts made of?”Google said, “According to current scientific understanding, thoughts are essentially made up of electrical signals generated by the firing of neurons in the brain, which communicate with each other through chemical messengers called neurotransmitters; essentially, a thought is a complex pattern of neural activity within the brain, triggered by sensory input, memories, and other factors.”Google's answer to my question is true, but it isn't useful. My goal is to place a thought into the mind of another person. I want to change what they are thinking and feeling. In 2003 I proposed a theory that has come to be known as “The 12 Languages of the Mind.” It explains how thoughts are constructed from pre-thought particles.Stay with me. This is about to get interesting.A neuron is a nerve cell, the basic unit of the nervous system. It is responsible for sending and receiving electrical signals. A synapse is the tiny gap between two neurons. This is where information is transferred from one neuron to another through the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. Essentially, a neuron is the cell itself, and a synapse is the connection point between two neurons where communication occurs.Sounds a little bit like a computer, doesn't it?A computer is of little value without an operating system. The 12 Languages of the Mind are the operating system of the brain.Let's look at it another way.We know that all the matter in the universe is made from just 3 primaries: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These form atoms, the smallest units of matter.Atoms of elements combine to create molecules of compounds; two atoms of hydrogen plus one atom of oxygen create a single molecule of water, H2O.There are 118 different kinds of atoms organized in The Periodic Table of the Elements. We can create new substances because we now understand the constituent components that underlie all the matter in the universe.Just as protons, neutrons, and electrons can be arranged to form matter, The 12 Languages of the Mind can be arranged to communicate thoughts and trigger the emotions, opinions, and reactions that follow those thoughts.Symbols are one of The 12 languages of the Mind. Motion is another.Hydrogen + Oxygen = Water.Symbol + Motion = Ritual. Our material universe is created from just 3 primaries.Likewise, all the colors we see are created from just 3 primaries, red, yellow, and blue in subtractive color, red, yellow, and blue in subtractive color. But red, green, and blue in additive color. It depends on whether your eye is absorbing the light waves, which is additive, or whether you are seeing reflected light from a substance that has absorbed part of the light spectrum. That is called subtractive color.Created from 12 primaries, how much bigger is the universe of your mind?Your body contains about a 100 million sensory receptors that allow you to see, feel, taste, hear, and smell physical reality. But your brain contains about 10,000 billion synapses. This means you are approximately 100,000 times better equipped to experience a world that does not exist, than a world that does. It is these
