This letter was written to Toki Jōnin, a learned and dedicated disciple who lived in Shimōsa Province. In it Nichiren Daishonin stresses the extreme seriousness of the offense of slander and also the importance of embracing the supreme Buddhist teaching. The letter is dated simply the twenty-third day of the eighth month, and though it is generally thought to have been written in the first year of Kenji (1275) at Minobu, no firm conclusion has been reached in this regard. Other opinions are that the Daishonin wrote it in 1276 or even in 1273 while he was still on Sado Island. In the Daishonin's teaching, rather than adherence to a specific code of conduct, one's fundamental posture toward the Mystic Law, or ultimate reality, determines one's happiness or unhappiness in life. A person who seeks and awakens to the ultimate truth within will attain enlightenment, while one who remains in ignorance of it or even slanders it will continue to be bound by suffering. Hence the Daishonin's emphasis on exclusive commitment to the Lotus Sutra, which teaches the direct attainment of Buddhahood for all people. In the last part of this letter, the Daishonin raises a question that had crossed many people's minds: on the basis of what sort of insight does he dare to criticize such eminent teachers of the past as Kōbō, Jikaku, and Chishō? However, instead of answering this question directly, he simply says, “You had better cut short your sleep by night and curtail your leisure by day, and ponder this!” This passage, from which the letter takes its name, suggests that the most important task of our human existence is to seek out and uphold the correct teaching leading to enlightenment.
Today we dance with an insightful scholar's paper on Dogen Zenji's unique and profound ideas regarding fullness, universal liberation, the sacred as "immanent in space and time", Buddhahood in the "fundamental activity of the world," practice-realization as "liberating activity", Zen practice as the "practice of Buddhahood," and the fullness and sacredness of "ordinary life". Zazen (Zen meditation), Awakening, and Buddhahood are no different.
Nichiren Daishonin wrote this letter at Minobu in the seventh month of the third year of Kōan (1280) to the lay nun Sennichi, who lived on Sado Island. Sennichi was the wife of Abutsu-bō Nittoku, who had passed away the year before. Abutsu-bō had originally been a Nembutsu believer, but soon after encountering the Daishonin, together with his wife, became his sincere follower and helped provide him with food and supplies during his stay on Sado. After the Daishonin was pardoned from his exile and had taken up his residence at Minobu, Abutsu-bō, despite his advanced age, made at least three journeys to see him. He died on the twenty-first day of the third month, 1279, at the age of ninety-one. His son, Tōkurō Moritsuna, visited the Daishonin at Minobu later that year with his father's ashes and laid them to rest there. The lay nun Sennichi was concerned about the privations of the Daishonin's life at Minobu, and in 1280 sent Tōkurō with various offerings for him. Tōkurō arrived at Minobu on the first day of the seventh month, and Nichiren Daishonin wrote this letter to the lay nun in acknowledgment of her sincere offerings, entrusting it to her son on his return journey. In the beginning portion, the Daishonin declares that to read even one phrase of the Lotus Sutra is equivalent to reading all the teachings expounded by Shakyamuni Buddha during his lifetime. He assures the lay nun Sennichi that all persons who embrace the Lotus Sutra will attain Buddhahood, and therefore, in the light of the “clear mirror of the Lotus Sutra,” there can be no doubt that her late husband, Abutsu-bō, has attained Buddhahood as well. In the remaining portion of the letter, the Daishonin encourages the lay nun in the face of her loneliness following her husband's death, and also praises the filial devotion of her son, Tōkurō. Especially touched by Tōkurō's two visits to Minobu for his father's sake, the Daishonin concludes his letter by exclaiming, “Surely, there is no treasure greater than a child, no treasure greater than a child!” https://www.nichirenlibrary.org/en/wnd-1/Content/149

In this gem of an episode, Harmony and Russell dive deep into the philosophy of Tibetan Buddhism with the wise and joyful Hector Marcel, President of the Three Jewels Outreach Center in New York City, Tibetan Buddhism Teacher, and Meditation Expert. Hector shares his journey from Argentina to Australia and eventually to New York City, where he discovered Tibetan Buddhism. This conversation is full of laughter, wisdom, and thought-provoking ideas about karma, suffering, reincarnation, and the power of meditation. The discussion touches on the misconception that spiritual practices will eliminate suffering and explains how enlightenment can be found by transforming how we experience life's challenges. Hector emphasizes the importance of facing our negative karmas, the mind-body connection, and why joy is integral to moving through suffering. Key Topics Discussed: Hector's Journey: From Argentina to Tibetan Buddhism Hector recounts his fascinating journey from fleeing political unrest in Argentina to embracing Tibetan Buddhism. His personal story illustrates how life's unexpected turns can lead to profound wisdom and spiritual transformation. Discovering Meditation and Buddhism Hector recalls his initial reluctance to embrace meditation and Buddhism and how a series of serendipitous events, including a dream and accidentally crashing a buddhist party led him to a lifelong commitment to Tibetan teachings. Understanding Karma and Reincarnation Hector offers a clear and insightful explanation of karma, reincarnation and how these concepts are tied to the Buddhist understanding of consciousness and the mind. The Role of Meditation and Pretending One of the episode's key takeaways is how meditation can help change our relationship to reality and how “pretending” enlightenment can actually lead to real awakening. Finding Joy in Suffering Hector discusses how we can find joy even in moments of suffering by shifting our mindset and understanding that our perception creates our experience of reality. Exploring Emptiness and the Nature of Reality The concept of emptiness is explored in depth, particularly how things don't have an inherent nature, and how our projections create our experiences. The Path to Enlightenment vs. Nirvana Hector explains the difference between Nirvana and full Buddhahood, offering insights into what it means to reach enlightenment and how it can be achieved not just for oneself but for all living beings. In strong and shaky times, where everything is changing extremely rapidly, we recognise it's essential that we gain a greater understanding of the purpose and potential of our personal and collective evolution. There are very few singular spiritual paths or concepts able to bring a full spectrum wisdom and clarity to give us direction and confidence that everything is going to be OKAY and something totally extraordinary is unfolding. Imagine, that in ‘ reality' as uncomfortable as things may seem we are being prepared for a Golden Age. This is a huge thing, and is very real. So here is a question for you…What do you understand The Golden Age to actually be?This is an invitation to receive the blessing of blessings that will help you rest in Natural Great Peace from the exhausted mind beaten helplessly by karma and neurotic thoughts.Rinpoche as he is fondly known, is an adept on teaching the Kalachakra System in a really special vivid way that we can have a deeper understanding of the reality of Shambhala and how vast amounts of Beings attained Buddhahood and live in a perfected state that is in fact our primordial innate nature.About Rita HraizRita Hraiz, a grandmother from Glastonbury UK, has been a respected student and teacher of Ageless Wisdom, Solar Philosophy, Shamanism and Esoteric Psychology for the last 28 years. She has internationally held transformational Dharmakaya Retreats for the last 15 years carrying these ancient teachings to sacred lands. Due to his non-sectarian approach, he earned himself the title of Rimé (unbiased) Master and was identified as the reincarnation of the famous Kalachakra Master Ngawang Chözin Gyatso. While at the core of his teachings is the recognition that there is great value in the diversity of all spiritual traditions found in this world; he focuses on the Jonang-Shambhala tradition. Finally, Tang Seng and his disciples arrived at the Western Heaven. They first received a stack of white papers at the Great Thunder Monastery. They presented a purple-golden alms bowl as a gift, and then obtained the true scriptures. Unexpectedly, on their way back, they were flipped into the water by the old turtle of the Milky Way River, experiencing the final of the eighty-one torment. The four of them returned the scriptures to the Tang Dynasty and then went back to the Western Heaven, all achieving Buddhahood.

These excerpts for meditation have been taken from the text, "Self-Liberation through seeing with Naked Awareness" by Padmasambhava. Translated by John Reynolds. A text belonging to the same cycle as The Tibetan Book of the Dead, this instruction on the method of self-liberation presents the essence of Dzogchen, The Great Perfection, regarded in Tibet as the highest and most esoteric teaching of the Buddha. Teaching the attainment of Buddhahood in a single lifetime, this text was written and concealed by Guru Padmasambhava in the eighth century and rediscovered six centuries later by Karma Lingpa.

THE TEN STAGES: An Introduction to the Bodhisattva Path Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:30pm (Pacific) June 29 - August 31, 2023 Tuition: $300 The Ten Stages (bhūmi) describe the process of awakening (or ‘enlightenment'), from the initial determination to do so all the way to the attainment of Buddhahood. This ten-step rubric is the foundation of the Bodhisattva Path and it comes from an early Mahāyāna sutra simply known as the Ten Stages Sutra, in which each stage is associated with different practices, teachings, and contemplation exercises. This course is a ten-week exploration of each Stage of the Path. We will read portions of the Ten Stages Sutra, explore commentaries of The Stages, and consider its relevance to our lives today. EMPTINESS: The Wisdom of Nāgārjuna Sundays, 9:00am - 10:30am (PT) July 9 - August 26, 2023 Tuition: $250 Śūnyatā, translated most often as 'emptiness,' is possibly the most difficult Buddhist concept to understand. In early Buddhist writings, the term is often synonymous with the concept of ‘no-self' (anattā), or it is described as a meditative experience completely devoid of sensory perception. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, however, śūnyatā is more closely associated with the teaching of dependent-origination (pratītyasamutpāda) and is interpreted as the lack of inherent nature (svabhāva) of any individuated phenomena, self or otherwise. The primary teacher of Emptiness in this sense, and its broader implications, is undoubtedly the Indian Buddhist philosopher Nāgārjuna. This course is a line-by-line reading of Nāgārjuna's commentarial poem the Śūnyatāsaptatikārikā ('Seventy Verses on Emptiness'). For more information or to register go to www.LotusUnderground.com
What is ego, and how does it affect our practice as Buddhists in Recovery? When we practice Dharma, are we taking refuge in our identity, apparently concrete and permanent sense of self, or are we working to let go, to discover our real nature, same as all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the Three Times and the Ten Directions. No different. To understand this context, in this sense of the Teaching, one must find a qualified Master and receive detailed instructions on how to overcome samsara without resisting our suffering, or our Buddhahood. Listen in as we practice and discuss the how and why of Dharma in Recovery, instead of constructing an even more elaborate and sophisticated trap, called the Dharma Ego. Fearlessness is much talked about in Buddhism, particularly the idea of becoming fearless. In this episode we look at that which causes us fear, antidotes to fear, and tapping into our own bravery. It's important to begin a discussion on fear according to Buddhism, to understand that Buddha distinguished between skillful fear and unskillful fear. Skillful fear can be a helpful tool to motivate us towards skillful action, like a person who sees a train barreling down the track and feels fear of sitting on the tracks. If the fear is unskillful, however, it leads us to unskillful action instead. This episode explores unskillful fear and how to overcome it. When we look at things which cause us unskillful fear, they range from: fear of things which may or may not happen fear of the unpleasantness of things which will happen, like aging fear for those we love The Story of Mara Trying to Frighten the Buddha's Son “While residing at the Jetavana monastery, the Buddha uttered Verses (351) and (352) of this book, with reference to Mara who had come to frighten Samanera Rahula, son of Gotama Buddha. On one occasion, a large number of monks arrived at the Jetavana monastery where Buddha was staying, together with his followers and his son, Rahula. To put up the guest monks Rahula decided to go and sleep near the door, just outside the chamber of the Buddha. Mara, representing a devil figure, wanting to annoy the Buddha through his son, took the form of an elephant and encircling the head of the samanera with his trunk made an alarming noise hoping to frighten him. But Rahula was unmoved. The Buddha, from his chamber, knew what was happening, and said, "O wicked Mara! Even a thousand such as you would not be able to frighten my son. My son has no fear, he is free from craving, he is vigilant, he is wise." Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows: Verse 351: He who has attained arahatship [Buddhahood] is free from fear, free from craving, and free from moral defilements. He has cut off the thorns of existence (such as lust). This is the last existence (for him). Verse 352: He who is free from craving and from attachment, who is skilled in the knowledge of the significance of terms, who knows the grouping of letters and their sequence is indeed called "one who has lived his last, a man of great wisdom, a great man." This is a guided meditation based on the famous teaching of Tilopa - the 6 words of Advice. Tilopa is one of the most authoritative and renowned Indian mahasiddhas and masters of mahamudra and tantra. He received various tantric teachings, unified them, and transmitted them to his disciple, Naropa. Tilopa (988–1069) was born in Bengal in India. He was a tantric practitioner and mahasiddha. He practised Anuttarayoga Tantra, a set of spiritual practices intended to accelerate the process of attaining Buddhahood.
