Jacques talks with academic and peace and environmental activist Dr Marty Branagan who is Convenor of Peace Studies at the University of New England. Marty has been assisting the 'Bendigo Three' activists, protesting the ongoing investments by the NAB in fossil fuels exploitation; brought to court for 'trespassing'; he wrote a 'Defence of Duress' in their support (see the June issue of New Community journal for an account of this - ncq@borderlands.org.au). ReferenceMarty Branagan's new book 'The Cultural Dimensions of Peacebuilding' will be available from Anthempress in August this year. In the book, Marty details 'aspects of cultures, including language, films, journalism, political economics, museums, education, parenting, gender, artistic activism, and spirituality, which can contribute to either more violent societies or more peaceful ones. Solutions-oriented, it aims to inspire deep understanding and reflection, empowerment, and grassroots action in cultural spheres.'https://anthempress.com/humanities-literature-and-arts/the-cultural-dimensions-of-peacebuilding-epub

If we all do our part, we can grow this bigger than imaginable, thanks to the United Nations and UNESCO. Learn how you can make this a global reality. Charles F. “Chic” Dambach, Global Peacebuilder and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, has a wide ranging career that includes being the former President of the Alliance for Peacebuilding, former President of the National Peace Corps Association, and past Chief of Staff for Congressman John Garamendi of California. His memoir, Exhaust the Limits, the Life and Times of a Global Peacebuilder, features a lifetime of service and successful initiatives for peace. Mr. Dambach highlights how peacebuilding is the responsibility of everyone, especially for members of the U.S. Peace Corps, Rotary International and the United Nations. Previously, Mr. Dambach was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and he led a grassroots peacebuilding effort between Ethiopia and Eritrea in the 1990s. One hopeful trend today, as opposed to decades ago, is there are diverse educational programs on peacebuilding that are available to the general public so that people can learn helpful techniques to promote peace, and realize that there are no winners in a war.

“Every individual should be deliberately and consciously living their life in a peaceful and nonviolent way. And that is the basic self-transformation which is important for the Culture of Peace. And that is the thing that we have been telling again and again, that peace is something very individual to all of us. Yes, we create the communities. We create the nations. But individuals do it. Nations do not stand and communities do not stand without the individuals. So, that is the point. If we change – it is a painstaking, long-time effort, but we do that. We have to do one person at a time, and that is very important. ... So, that is a big, big challenge that we face all the time. But we cannot give up. Civil society cannot give up. We are the conscience of humanity, and we try our best to bring it out.” – Ambassador Anwarul ChowdhuryIn this week's episode of Nonviolence Radio, Stephanie and Michael speak with Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury about the UN Culture of Peace and Nonviolence, its history, and the challenges that it faces within the UN system. He rejects the framing of nonviolence as idealism, and instead embraces it as a practical plan of action that, over the long term, leads to the self-transformation of individuals and societies, and is thus fundamental to the realization of the UN's broader goals. At the same time, he warns that a UN consumed by bureaucracy, internal politics and putting out daily fires, is one which loses its capacity for this long-term vision. As the conscience of humanity, civil society must therefore continue pushing for peace and nonviolence as fundamental not only to preserving the UN's relevance, but also to bringing about peace for future generations.

In 2004, James Hillman published a difficult and though-provoking investigation of war titled A Terrible Love of War. He writes:"I believe that we can never speak sensibly of peace or disarmament unless we enter into this love of war. Unless we enter into the martial state of soul, we cannot comprehend its pull [...] To know war we must enter its love. No psychic phenomenon can be truly dislodged from its fixity unless we first move the imagination into its heart..." In this episode, I approach Hillman and "A Terrible Love of War" with these questions:What is "the terrible love of war?" How does Hillman ask us to imagine it?What can an archetypal perspective on the phenomenon of war tell us about its nature, and our own? Can this perspective help us, as citizens and mortal humans, to create a culture of peace?I welcome your comments and questions. Thanks for listening.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/mythmatterspodcast)

On today's episode I share some thoughts on the war in Ukraine and how we can move towards a global culture of peace

Ingeborg Breines was a director specializing in gender issues at UNESCO at the end of the Cold War – a time of optimism, when there was reason to hope that democracy would spread around the world and that the OSCE would be the paramount international organization for Europe and the other northern countries of the world. We talk about the impending war against Ukraine and the need for UN peacekeepers in the Donbas region and the possibility of the General Assembly reclaiming authority over issues now handled by the ineffectual Security Council. “Peace may seem an elusive concept in a world with horrific violence, brutal conflict, and exploitation, yet never in humanity’s history has such a comprehensive map of peace emerged as is now evident… What we call a culture of peace comes from a whole-systems perspective, which sees all things as interconnected and influencing each other. We are increasingly aware of our interconnectedness and interdependence, and we act accordingly.” These are the words of James O’Dea from the book, Our Moment of Choice. Today, we are going to explore how YOU can build a global community and create a culture of peace with Dr. Kurt Johnson and Rev. Deborah Moldow.
Colombia has always been an interesting case-study in the peacebuilding field. Since 2016, a lot of optimism exists after having reached a peace agreement with the FARC. However, the fragile peace faces many challenges. The COVID-19 outbreak has deepened the already existing problems, affecting disproportionately the rural areas. In the midst of a crisis, there are always opportunities. La Paz Querida is a group of citizens convinced that a peaceful future is possible for Colombia. In this episode, Carlos from UNOY Peacebuilders sat with Dr. Carlos Lemoine and Dr. Gabriel Murillo, members of LPQ, to discuss their work in promoting a culture of peace and a new ethic based on human dignity. They are making this happen by promoting dialogue and advocating for sustainable social policies to protect the most vulnerable. Tune in to listen to their stories and learn about their efforts to build a culture of peace in Colombia.

This is a powerful discussion reinforcing the importance of The Culture of Peace : what is truly important in life, bringing out the best in human beings and our work as a society and our humanity to come together to face tomorrow’s challenges. But we need to do this together... we hear this over and over again but this discussion truly inspires great depth and understanding of how we can transform our intentions, find greater compassion and examine our excessive consumption of “things”. This pandemic has been an awakening. And has brought out the best in humanity, to discover what is asked of us; to learn together how to survive these difficult times. The Culture of Peace seeks to change our mind set to inculcate peace and caring into how we live our daily lives. We are global citizens. We must start to think as a connected world. This episode is a milestone conversation that will indeed nourish how you move forward to protect the essence of what is vital in life.

Dealing with conflict is not just a matter for individuals but a group activity that should be a marker of the church community. Jesus prays for unity and love in the church and our community should be counter-cultural in the way that we deal with conflict: not ignoring it but being willing to repent and forgive and to move forward with reconciliation and love. What a powerful witness this would be if we did it!

Global activist and author James O'Dea joins Julie Ann to explore the cultural, spiritual, and scientific dimensions of just this question - at a critical time on our planet. The guidance Julie Ann and James will explore - drawn from James's latest book, "Cultivating Peace: Becoming a 21st-Century Peace Ambassador," is relevant for us all - even those who have never considered themselves peacebuilders - not just for peace activists, mediators, and negotiators, but for psychologists, educators, businesspeople, and clergy - and for us, as everyday citizens. At an individual level, we may play a role as activators of peace through energy mastery - we can we can transform the energy that triggers us and model how to successfully transform unhealthy conflict in our families, workplaces, and local communities. On a community and societal level, peacebuilding creates space for healthy, deep introspection, dialogue, healing - and new vision.Peace work is about expanding the capacity of a society to embrace multifaceted identities. Democracy is the best tool we have to align individual and collective freedom, as it is nurtured and allowed to slowly and authentically evolve.James O’Dea is a renowned figure in international social healing, who integrates personal experience in the world’s violent conflict zones with insights gathered from decades of work in social healing, human rights advocacy, and consciousness studies.
