In this episode of The Absolute Strength Podcast, I sit down with Eugene from USA Streetlifting. Streetlifting is a competitive strength sport that blends weighted calisthenics with max-effort lifting. Athletes compete in four movements—pull-up, dip, muscle-up, and squat—each tested for a one-rep max similar to powerlifting. Competitors are divided by sex and body weight, with three attempts per lift to achieve their heaviest successful rep. The highest lift in each movement contributes to their total, and the highest combined score wins. It was a fascinating discussion that I think you guys will enjoy! In this episode of The Absolute Strength Podcast, Derek and I tackle a loaded Q&A covering everything from avoiding breaking down during meet prep to optimizing caffeine intake on meet day. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! Questions on the show: Hey Kyle, can you and Derek cover gaining strength without burning yourself out and stalling progress? I've done one meet, and I'm roughly four weeks out from my next. Both times, I've started strong, making great strength gains, and then 8ish weeks into meet prep, all progress stalls, and I just feel physically exhausted. What am I doing wrong? This was a long question. He provided some background and his workout routine, but the gist is that he is following an upper/lower-power-building routine and is experiencing lower back pain. Since this is a common issue, let's just talk about ways to mitigate lower back pain when training for strength. Hey guys, would there ever be a good reason to take a competition lift completely out of training for a while? My squat has been stuck at the same weight forever, and I'm wondering if I'd benefit from replacing it with variations for a couple of months. If someone can only train three days a week, how would you set up a powerlifting program to maximize progress? Is there a specific split that works best? I always feel like I lose tightness in the hole when I squat heavy. Are there any specific cues or drills you recommend to fix this? I've tried slowing down my descent, but it doesn't seem to help much. I lift first thing in the morning, and if I don't eat, I feel weak, but if I do eat, I feel sluggish. What's the best pre-workout meal or drink that won't slow me down? When should a powerlifter go through a hypertrophy block? Is it something that should only be done in the offseason, or do you think there's value in keeping some hypertrophy work year-round, even close to a meet? If someone pulls conventional and sumo about the same weight, is there a reason to specialize in one? Or would training both be more beneficial in the long run? On meet day, is caffeine timing more important than total intake? Should I be spreading out smaller doses throughout the day, or is it better to take a big hit of caffeine before each lift? Imagine you both compete at the same meet at the end of the year in your preferred weight class. How would each of you structure the training and nutrition to coach each other into the meet? Although the stereotype has changed, quality nutrition is probably the last thing you associate with powerlifting. For decades, the image of a 300-pound overweight behemoth was the face and body of the sport. Bodybuilders used to even joke during their offseason that they might as well get fat and become powerlifters. However, powerlifting has weight classes, which makes nutrition uniquely important. It's hard to be competitive at a high level if you have a lot of extra body fat. Look at the best powerlifters in the sport today - John Haack, Russel Orhii, Taylor Atwood, they are all jacked. To maximize your potential on the platform, you want to carry as much lean body mass as possible while staying within the weight-class parameters. The strongest athlete isn't always the most muscular one, but having more muscle mass is going to equal a stronger version of you. So, nutrition is a great place to start if you want to improve your powerlifting game. The trouble is, what does that even mean? In this podcast, we cover what eating for strength is all about. Do you recommend a specific macro split for fat loss, or is it just about protein and calories? For example, I love carbs. Can I still eat a lot of them and lose fat? How do you feel about cheat meals during a cut? Do they actually help, or just slow down fat loss? Hey Kyle, how do you stay consistent with fat loss when life gets crazy with work, kids, social events, etc.? What do you guys think is the biggest mistake bodybuilders make when trying to get stage-lean? I know there are no real health benefits to alcohol, but how bad is it for fat loss? If you've ever felt guilty about eating eggs, red meat, white bread, or chocolate, this episode is for you. The truth is, no single food will make or break your progress. It all comes down to context, portion control, and your overall diet. We'll break down why labeling foods as off-limits can actually do more harm than good and go over some of the most commonly demonized foods that you can absolutely include in your diet while still making gains. In this episode of the Absolute Strength Podcast, Derek and I answer a variety of listener questions. We dive into topics like workout efficiency, balancing intensity and volume, the benefits of saunas and steam rooms, the role of genetics in strength and muscle building, and the recent pushback against evidence-based lifting. Tune in for practical advice, and stay for the endless banter. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! Questions on the show: If a routine calls for four sets of 10 reps on something like an Incline press or cable chest flies, and instead, since you want to make your workout shorter, you do one set of 10, then wait 15 to 30 seconds and do three sets of whatever you can get but still around failure, is that as effective for muscle growth as doing one set of 10, then waiting two minutes and repeating until all four sets are done? I know you guys talk a lot about training close to failure, but how do you balance pushing hard on big compound lifts, lifts, specifically squats and deadlifts, staying safe and avoiding injury? What's your take on saunas and steam rooms? Do you think the cardiovascular and respiratory health benefits make them a valuable addition to a routine? How much do genetics really matter for building muscle and gaining strength? I hear mixed opinions - some people say they're everything, while others say hard work beats genetics every time. Why do you think there has been more pushback lately to evidence-based lifting and the scientific lifting community? I've been searching high and low for nutrition secrets for decades. At first, it was a selfish pursuit. I was Ponce de Leon looking for the Fountain of Youth, except my quest was for the fountain of muscle gains and performance. Then, my search evolved. Over the years, as I coached hundreds of clients, one question emerged: Why is nutrition so difficult for most people? Exercise is not the biggest struggle; it's diet, by far. There has to be a solution. It turns out there is only one nutrition secret—consistency. You can follow any diet you want—flexible dieting, low carb, low fat, intermittent fasting, paleo, Mediterranean—it doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is your ability to stick to it. If you stick to it, it will work. If you can't, it won't. So, what's the solution? It's not perfect, but The Consistency Diet is my best answer. https://kylehuntfitness.com/the-consistency-diet-a-simple-way-to-always-be-on-the-plan/ Sign up for the newsletter: The FREE Essential Strength Program The FREE Hunt Fitness Flexible Dieting Manual Hire Kyle as your coach: http://www.kylehuntfitness.com/services/ Connect with Kyle: KyleHuntFitness@gmail.com http://www.kylehuntfitness.com/ Programs: Powerbuilding: Absolute Progress 2.0 Powerlifting: Absolute Strength 3.0 Bodybuilding: Absolute Muscle Get 10% OFF PR Breaker Supplements: DISCOUNT CODE: "HUNT" at https://www.prbreaker.com/discount/HUNT

In this episode of the Absolute Strength Podcast, Derek and I answer listeners' questions. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! Questions on the show: I've been lifting heavy and focusing on powerlifting for a while now—do I need to mix in lighter phases either for better strength gains or for longevity, or can I keep pushing low reps year-round? What's the easiest way to start tracking macros when you're new to flexible dieting? When it comes to the deadlift, would you classify it more as a back exercise or a leg movement? Or, does it depend on your goals? What's one mistake you've made as a coach or in your own training that really taught you something important? Hey guys, love the show. My girlfriend wants me to help her get into lifting. However, she has never set foot in a gym before. My question is, how can I help a beginner start their fitness journey without making it feel too overwhelming? I'm 43, and have been training pretty consistently for twenty years. I still enjoy going to the gym, but I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere. When progress slows down or feels nonexistent, how do you stay motivated and stick with it? In regards to supplements for building muscle, what basics would you recommend? I already take a pre workout, protein powder, and creatine. Is there anything else I should look into? I have trouble feeling my lats in pull-ups. I know they are a great exercise so I want to do them. Do you have any tips to improve my mind-muscle connection? I just started training at home and I'm limited on equipment, with only a barbell and a few plates. How would you structure my workout to keep things challenging and progressive? I love reading. It's one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. But, when you get deep into reading, one of the first issues you run into is what to read next. So, I find myself perusing “best book” lists quite frequently. Here is my attempt to throw my hat into the ring. My goal is to create a well-rounded list. Of course, I'm limited to only books I've read. Admittedly, I have yet to read all the classics, but lists filled with those are a little pretentious anyway. I mean, come on, who has actually read The Wealth of Nations, War and Peace, or Ulysses? Since my audience is primarily men, the list includes 51 books every man should read. I divided them into five categories: fiction, money, personal development, biographies, and fitness. Sit back, relax, and enjoy! My birthday message - 33 lessons from 33 years of living and learning. Nobody likes you when you're twenty-three. Why? Because as I sit down to write this, I'm actually surprised I didn't write it ten years ago. I had a lot to say in my early twenties. The problem is, who wants to get life advice from a 23-year-old? Hopefully, no one. Well, what about thirty-three? It's a weird spot. Not old, but not exactly youthful either. I guess age is relative. Interestingly, regardless of age, most people believe who they are right now is who they'll be in the future. Research shows that for groups aged 18 to 68, people describe more change occurring in the past decade than they would have predicted ten years ago [1]. For example, researchers asked 33-year-olds how much they believed they would change in the next ten years and compared their responses with the changes 43-year-olds reported having made in the past ten years. Young, middle-aged, and older people believed they had changed a lot in the past but would change relatively little in the future. We don't think our personalities, values, and choices will change much, but they often do. And that makes sense. You shouldn't be the same person you were ten years ago. You shouldn't even be the same person you were one year ago. Life is about progress. It's why every year, on my birthday, I take inventory of the previous twelve months. What have I accomplished? How much have I grown and changed? What have I learned? I want to expand that further this year. What do I have to say after 33 years? Here are 33 lessons. Enjoy. In this episode of the Absolute Strength Podcast, Derek and I answer your questions! Sit back, relax, and enjoy! Questions on the show: Hey Kyle and Derek! I love the show. I'm 60 years old and have been lifting for 30 years. The first 10 years or so I lifted for strength and the last 20 have been more hypertrophy style lifting. ( I also moved furniture for a living) I've taken breaks here and there for other life events but it's been 4 or 5 days a week for most of that time. Ive gone back to some strength training but I've had to reduce the weight of my squats and deadlifts a bit lately because of a twinge I keep getting in my back and I believe I've maxed my genetic potential. Any advice to an older lifter that just wants to maintain my strength and fitness but doesn't want to wreck his back? Lighter weights or should I do alternative lifts I've been following a couple of generic strength programs for the past year, but I feel like I need something tailored to my weaknesses. How do I know when it's time to adjust my programming, and what changes should I prioritize? Hey guys, I want to get stronger, but I also don't want to lose my conditioning. I guess you could say I want to do hybrid-style training. How do you recommend balancing strength work with cardio without sacrificing gains? I've been lifting for a while now, but I'm not sure if I should invest in a belt, knee sleeves, or wrist wraps. At what point should I start using lifting equipment, and how do I know what's best for me? I just bought a new house, and I'm looking to build a home gym, but I have limited space and budget. What are the essential pieces of equipment you'd recommend to cover all my strength training needs? I'm considering moving up a weight class for my next powerlifting meet. How should I approach gaining weight without sacrificing my strength-to-weight ratio?
