The traditional class structure of doing a warmup, learning a couple of new techniques, and followed by sparring is NOT an efficient way to learn jiu-jitsu.  We can do much better if we use insights from research on coaching and learning. Today's guest is Cal MacDonald, a BJJ black belt and  competitor who has dedicated himself to developing his teaching and coaching skills to the highest possible level.   Cal is a longtime blackbelt under Rob Biernacki at Island Top Team. Rob and his team are at the cutting edge of teaching and training methodologies that make people amazingly good incredibly fast. Cal coached full time at Island Top Team for five years and is also a fierce competitor, having won Gold at NAGA, Pacific Northwest Open, and many other tournaments. He has travelled to top academies for Worlds and ADCC camps, training with top athletes like Yuri Simões, Mason Fowler, and Caio Terra, so he knows what works at the highest levels. His proudest accomplishments are the successes of his students, and he has spent thousands of hours coaching and cornering competitors as they fight their way to the podium. In this episode, we've got a legendary figure in the BJJ world, none other than 4th degree black belt Karel "The Silver Fox" Pravec! In addition to my home instructors, Karel "The Silver Fox" Pravec has been one of the most important figures in my personal development of my Jiu-Jitsu game. He's not just a coach; he's a mentor and friend who's helped guide me and a global tribe of others through the lockdowns with his wisdom and strategies that make up this amazing art. But that's not all. Karel played a pivotal role in getting this very podcast off the ground. He took a chance on an unknown host, agreeing to be my first guest in 2020 Karel's journey through martial arts is nothing short of awe-inspiring. In 1993 when BJJ finally made its way to the NJ/NY area, Karel Pravec embraced it with open arms. He became one of Renzo Gracie's first American students and dedicated his spare moments to mastering the gentle art. In 2006, after years of relentless practice, he proudly received his Black Belt from Renzo Gracie. In addition to his academies, Karel's expertise extends far beyond his own mats. He's become a sought-after instructor worldwide, constantly refining his skills and knowledge to benefit his students. He's shared his wisdom through his "Fluid BJJ" book and Digitsu video series, he has been featured on the Tristar Gym YouTube channel alongside the esteemed MMA coach, Firas Zahabi, and has several amazing offerings on BJJ Fanatics. Now, you might be wondering, how did Karel earn the nickname 'Silver Fox'? One of his training partners at the Renzo Gracie Academy couldn't help but notice Karel's remarkable ability to outfox him on the mat, despite being more athletic, bigger, and younger. With his distinguished gray hair and his cunning prowess, his partner began to affectionately call him the 'Silver Fox,' and the name simply stuck. In the episode we delve into leadership development in BJJ, explore Karel's upcoming JJ app, uncover the secrets of using the pool for BJJ training, and discover how to be the ultimate training partner. Excessive force issues may never be the same after the George Floyd death. Many states have enacted legislation now prohibited so-called "chokeholds," and Trump's Executive Order directed states to do so. In this livecast I'll discuss this, as well as the application of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training with my buddy, Adam Martin, who is not only former law enforcement, but a BJJ coach, practitioner, and competitor. Why? Because ever since the death of George Floyd, “chokehold” has been the word of the day. Trump brought them up in his June 16, 2020 Executive Order, and now many states have issued orders, or enacted legislation, banning the use of so-called “chokeholds” by police officers. The problem is, that the term doesn't mean what they think it means, and in doing so, they're changing the rules of self defense for police officers. As with other civil rights, if you allow it to be done to one group of people, it always grows like a virus to include groups of people who were not intended to be affected. In this video we discuss what that means. On June 16, 2020, President Donald Trump (R) issued an executive order, titled Executive Order on Safe Policing for Safe Communities, addressing changes to policing on June 16, 2020.The order directed the U.S. Department of Justice to create an independent credentialing body that would develop a set of criteria for state and local law enforcement agencies to meet in order to be awarded federal grants. The order stated that the criteria should address excessive use of force, include de-escalation training, and ban the use of chokeholds, except when the use of deadly force is lawful. https://thecivilrightslawyer.com/2020/08/07/bjj-and-police-use-of-force-freedom-is-scary-livecast-no-3/ Check out my blog at https://thecivilrightslawyer.com
