New Episodes every Sunday.Train Hard. Pray Harder.Join the brotherhood today: https://catholicwarrior.com/I made a post this week that lit the comments on fire. Apparently saying the Catholic Church is the one true faith is enough to get every Protestant on the internet in their feelings. So on this episode I'm addressing all of it.I'm also going deep on a part of history most people never learned. The British versus the French. The Spanish Empire. The incredible era of Catholic civilization that built the western world while Protestant nations were busy tearing it apart. I talk about movies I watched recently that brought this whole period to life and why understanding Catholic history matters if you want to understand where we are right now.If you call yourself a Christian but you reject the Church that Christ built, this episode is going to challenge you. If you're Catholic and you've never studied the history of your own Faith, this one's going to fire you up.Download The Catholic Warrior App Today and start your 7-day trial: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/catholic-warrior/id6761282461

If you train four to five days a week and still feel out of control around food, this is not a mindset problem. It is a fueling problem. And nobody in the fitness space is telling you that.In this video we break down why the standard advice around having a healthy relationship with food completely fails athletes. The fitness industry has been selling discipline and guilt removal as nutrition strategy. It is not. The real issue is that most hard training athletes are chronically under-fueled and their body is responding exactly the way it is supposed to.What we cover in this video:Why chasing perfect eating is destroying your relationship with foodWhat a healthy relationship with food actually looks like for someone training hardWhy discipline alone will never fix an under-fueling problemHow diet culture is the single biggest reason athletes look the same year after yearWhat changes when you start eating in a way that actually matches your trainingBook a free call with the CBG team: https://cbgonlinenutritioncoaching.com/application-ytFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cbgnutritionIf this is the way you want to approach your nutrition, subscribe so you never miss what we put out every week.#athletenutrition #functionalfitness #nutritioncoaching #bodyrecomp #healthyrelationshipwithfood #nomacrotracking #underfueling #cbgnutrition #consistencybreedsgrowth #eatforperformance

New Episodes every Sunday.Train Hard. Pray Harder. Join the brotherhood today: https://catholicwarrior.com/Nobody told you that you had to be a traddie in a cassock to be Catholic. Nobody told you that you had to fit inside someone else's box.The truth is — the Church is big enough for all of us. The hunter. The fighter. The guy who's still figuring it out. The man who's been away and is finding his way back. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to show up.In this episode I'm talking about the niche Catholic gatekeeping that drives men away from the Faith instead of drawing them in. The cliques. The purity spirals. The guys who make you feel like you're not Catholic enough. That's not the Church. That's pride wearing a rosary. We are all on the same team. We are all fighting the same enemy. In this episode, strength coach, educator, and IFAST co-founder Mike Robertson joins Doug Larson, Dr. Mike Lane, and Coach Travis Mash to talk about how serious lifters and athletes can train hard without destroying their bodies in the process. Mike shares his path from early T-Nation contributor to gym owner and longtime coach, explaining how his background in biomechanics shaped the way he evaluates movement, manages athletes, and builds training systems that support long-term performance. The crew also reflects on the early 2000s strength culture, the lessons learned from powerlifting, and why the best athletes often need a coach who can pull them back before ego, pain, or poor recovery catches up with them. The conversation gets into the practical side of staying healthy while still pushing performance: using force plate data and velocity-based training to make better decisions, watching for early signs of breakdown, and creating different exercise "buckets" for days when the body feels great, okay, or beat up. Mike explains why loss of hip internal rotation, lack of movement variability, and constantly chasing load can eventually lead to back, hip, or knee issues, even if the athlete feels fine for years. The team also breaks down how to train around pain and injury, when to adjust instead of quit, and why smart movement, mobility, isometrics, sled work, and lower-stress training days can keep athletes moving forward without digging a deeper recovery hole. Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels! We have three dogs, Thunder, Doc, and Trix, running NAVHDA Utility Tests this season, and we're breaking down the exact training plan for each one over the next ten weeks.Thunder is a Utility Prize 1 dog qualified for this year's Invitational. His main issue is duck search confidence. He pops, checks in, and runs the shore instead of expanding independently. We're using lining drills, duck launchers, and heavy salting to build his independence before his September run.Doc has a similar confidence hang-up in the duck search. His prep mirrors Thunder's, with an emphasis on challenging field work and duck work twice a week. He's targeting a Prize 1 at the June test.Trix is a titled Master Hunter who has never run Utility, and for good reason. Her issue is unique: she finds ducks, but won't retrieve them independently when we can't influence her. The plan is high-volume marking drills with dead ducks to condition the same retrieve expectation she has with every other bird.We also cover: how to structure weekly training schedules, when to run mock test days, the "train hard, test easy" principle and where it gets misconstrued, why ducks and quail cause the most retrieving problems, and how much field work experienced dogs actually need.If you're prepping a dog for their first utility test or trying to requalify, this episode gives you a real-world blueprint.Chapters0:00 Intro — Three Dogs, One Test Season1:28 Meet Thunder, Doc, and Trix3:12 Thunder's Duck Search Hang-Up: Popping and Checking In7:48 How Thunder's Invitational Prep Affects His Utility Training12:31 Building Independent Duck Search Confidence15:21 Using Duck Launchers to Build Confidence in the Water17:42 Heavy Salting — What It Is and When to Use It19:21 Reviewing the Training Pond and Setup28:21 Thunder's Weekly Training Schedule Breakdown35:39 Field Work: Quality Over Quantity38:51 Train Hard, Test Easy — and Where It Gets Misconstrued43:29 Running Mock Test Days: How and When45:44 Doc — His Hang-Ups and Training Approach54:08 Doc's Plan: Similar Path, Slightly Different Wrinkles58:59 Trix — Her Story and the Duck Retrieve Problem1:00:06 Trix's Ten-Week Plan: High-Volume Duck Marking Drills1:05:15 Conditioning the Right Response When You Can't See Your Dog1:09:04 What Makes Trix Special in the Field1:11:56 Wrapping Up — Three Dogs, Three Plans, One GoalSend Us Mail5919 W Pleasant Valley RdPretty Prairie, KS 67570LinksStep-By-Step Dog Training Course: https://www.standingstonesupply.com/coursesJoin our Patreon Community - https://bit.ly/SSK-PatreonOur Store - https://bit.ly/SSK-StoreSocial MediaFacebook: www.facebook.com/StandingStoneKennelsInstagram: www.instagram.com/standingstonekennels/Website: www.standingstonekennels.comEthan and Kat Pippitt are the proud owners of Standing Stone Kennels. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: Thinking about the end game from the beginning of your training.  Creating neutrality through all kinds of distractions.  Look at me, look at me while, look at that, and look at that while commands for your dog.  Balancing draw to fight against drift.    Key Takeaways: Attention is the dog's anchor. Give them a point to focus on that allows them to be neutral to everything else around.  You have to control a dog's eyes to control their behavior.  You want to lay the foundation for sending on command, not sending on agitation and discriminating between the two early on in your training.  Create neutrality through time on the field.  No matter how advanced your dog is, keep working on your fundamentals. That is where the strength lies when you are in actual scenarios.    "One of the most important fundamental exercises of attention is teaching the dog to look at me, then look at that, and then look back to me, and then look back to that and change it up for the dog where I point the dog at different things that might be of concern to him." —  Jerry Bradshaw   Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training:  www.tarheelcanine.com Youtube:  tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon:   patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine  Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/    Sponsors:  ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: thedriveco.com  The Drive Company Instagram: instagram.com/thedrive.co  Dog Armour: dogarmour.com  Dog Armour Instagram: instagram.com/dogarmourpro  Rogue Arsenal: roguearsenal.com  Rogue Arsenal Instagram: instagram.com/rogue_arsenal_official    Train Hard, train smart, be safe.     Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Continuing with part 2 of this series, Alison goes deeper into her ongoing journey within the health and fitness realm, specifically reflecting on her training regimen and its evolution over time. In this episode Alison aims to provide a behind-the-scenes look at her practices while remaining transparent about her process. As the fitness landscape shifts, the traditional notions of intense workout regimens are being challenged by a variety of new trends, particularly in boutique fitness. Although traditional workouts undeniably deliver results, the current consumer environment can be overwhelming, leading many to start and stop various programs—a pattern Alison repeatedly sees as "yo-yo exercising." The essence of this episode emphasizes a return to basics and how maintaining consistency with fundamental movements can yield better long-term results.Alison candidly discusses the internal struggles we all face regarding motivation and the misconception that workouts should always be enjoyable or entertaining. As someone who has dedicated her career to health and fitness, she confesses that even on days when her enthusiasm wanes, she recognizes the importance of her fitness routine as a non-negotiable component of her life.Alison shares her personal commitments, particularly since entering her 50s, and how her mindset toward training has changed. Embracing the reality of aging, she's become increasingly aware of how her routines need to adapt. Factors like recovery, intensity, and structured training are now fundamental aspects of her fitness approach. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing our body's capability to become more efficient through strength training and how intensity can significantly impact our metabolic processes.Alison also touches on the significance of finding a training program conducive to longevity and overall health—as well as the common misconception that comfortable exercise suffices as an adequate fitness strategy. Instead, she challenges listeners to consider the necessity of both intense workouts and moderate activities to achieve a holistic approach to fitness.HIGHLIGHTS:1:44 The Changing Landscape of Fitness6:24 My Personal Fitness Journey16:04 The Importance of Structure16:57 Navigating Age and Fitness28:56 Hormonal Balance and Exercise30:55 The Myth of Busy Schedules34:18 Finding Balance in Training37:23 Key Tips for Effective Trainingmentioned in episodeDr. Jade Teta: https://www.jadeteta.comDr. Stacy Sims: https://www.drstacysims.comSam Miller: https://sammillerscience.comMADabolic fitness: https://madabolic.comSPONSOR:Cellev8Discount code: THEALISONK2024 ALISON'S LINKS:Website | Facebook | Twitter | InstagramGET MY FREE 4 part Pop-up Podcast SeriesJOIN Borderless Hybrid Innovators FB GroupINNOVATION AVENUE: Fitness and Self-Care Revolution

Life rarely warns us before it throws its hardest challenges. One moment everything feels normal—and the next, you are facing circumstances that test your strength, leadership, and resilience. How prepared are you when life changes overnight? Are you building the mental, physical, and emotional capacity to handle those moments? In this powerful episode, Jason Khalipa shares the mindset that helped him navigate one of the most difficult experiences a parent can face—his daughter Ava's leukemia diagnosis. A CrossFit Games Champion, entrepreneur, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and founder of NCFIT, Jason has spent decades pushing physical limits. However, he explains that the greatest lessons from fitness are not about trophies or performance—they are about developing the mental frameworks that prepare you for life's toughest moments.Jason introduces the AMRAP mentality, the power of positive self-talk, and the importance of focusing only on what is within your control. These principles became essential tools when his family spent months in the hospital fighting for Ava's life. Through that experience, Jason discovered that the habits built in the gym can create powerful “hedges” that prepare you physically, emotionally, and financially for life's unexpected curveballs. You will also hear why Jason believes men need community, why shared hardship builds stronger leaders, and how fitness can become a training ground for fatherhood, leadership, and resilience. If you want to become a stronger leader, husband, father, or man—this conversation will challenge how you think about preparation, discipline, and the way you show up in life.Quotes:“You never know when life is going to throw you a curveball. It's not if—it's when.”“The greatest gift fitness ever gave me wasn't the medals. It was what happened in my mind.”“Focus on what you can control. Everything else will drain your energy.”Takeaways:1. Build your hedges before the storm. Physical fitness, financial stability, and strong relationships create resilience when life becomes difficult.2. Your internal dialogue matters. Learning to replace negative self-talk with coaching-style encouragement can transform how you handle stress and adversity.3. Focus only on what you control. Separating controllable and uncontrollable factors reduces anxiety and helps you act with clarity. Conclusion:Jason Khalipa's story is a powerful reminder that the habits we build today shape how we respond to tomorrow's challenges. Fitness is not just about strength or endurance—it is about developing the mental toughness, leadership, and resilience needed for life's most difficult moments.By training the body and the mind, we become better fathers, leaders, and teammates. The discipline developed through small daily choices ultimately determines how we show up when life demands the most from us.Jason Khalipa is a CrossFit Games Champion (2008), multi-year Games competitor, and the founder of NCFIT, a global fitness community with gyms, digital programming, and training resources used worldwide. He is also:Founder of Train Hard, a men's movement focused on fitness, leadership, and brotherhoodAuthor of As Many Reps As PossibleHost of The Jason Khalipa PodcastCo-founder of Ava's Kitchen & Kids, inspired by his daughter's cancer journeySpeaker on leadership, fatherhood, and resilienceA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black beltJason's mission centers on one simple idea:Train hard in the gym so you can show up harder for life.About Jason Khalipa

If a dog can't be satisfied with the bite they are getting on a suit, they may look for the human underneath and bite outside of the typical areas, such as ankles, which can cause more harm.  Use training techniques like equipment shredding drills to improve the dog's ability to find and get a successful bite.   "When we're introducing the hidden equipment, usually we want to introduce it in such a way that we can maximize the dog's experience, including having them in the right mood that we want them in when they're experiencing this hidden equipment. We also want to have decoy safety." —  Jerry Bradshaw   Episode References:  Josh Kirby at Kirby K9 / Demanet: www.k9irby.com Thad Peterson at Seynaeve US: www.seynaeve.us & www.ringsuits.com Dog Armour: www.DogArmour.com   More information on the Kynology Seminar with Dr. Stewart Hilliard: https://kynology.org/    Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training:  www.tarheelcanine.com YouTube:  tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon:   patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine  Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/  Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/    Sponsors:  ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/  The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co  Dog Armour: http://www.dogarmour.com/  Rogue Arsenal: https://roguearsenal.com/    Find out more about Hold The Line Conference 2026 at https://htlk9.com/    Train Hard, train smart, be safe.     Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. SISTERHOOD OF SWEAT - Motivation, Inspiration, Health, Wealth, Fitness, Authenticity, Confidence and Empowerment

In this powerful and practical episode of The Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T., Linda Mitchell sits down with Dan Kachtik, owner of King William District CrossFit in San Antonio, Texas, to break down what it really takes to build strength, longevity, and confidence at any age. With more than 15 years of experience coaching everyday athletes, Dan shares honest insights on sustainable training, smart nutrition, aging well, and why consistency matters far more than perfection. Together, Linda and Dan dive into how to train smarter after 40, how women should approach fitness during menopause, and why mindset—not motivation—is the real game changer. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone who wants to feel stronger, move better, and live with energy and purpose for decades to come. Questions Linda Asked Dan Why do so many people unknowingly undo their workouts through nutrition choices? Why is increasing protein so important for body composition and longevity? How does eating out sabotage even "healthy" diets? What role does food prep really play in achieving results? What type of training best supports longevity for people over 40 and 50? How should intensity change as we age—without taking it too easy? What do women need to consider during menopause when it comes to training? Why is lifting heavy essential for women's long-term health? How does walking support longevity and recovery? What has 15 years of gym ownership taught you about leadership and community? What separates people who transform their bodies from those who quit? What is the most important mindset shift in a fitness journey? Where can listeners learn more about you and your work? Main Themes from This Episode Strength Is a Longevity Tool Muscle is not about aesthetics—it's about independence, metabolism, brain health, and aging with confidence. Lifting weights is non-negotiable as we get older. Train Hard, But Train Smart Intensity still matters, but volume must be personalized. Strategic heavy lifting and occasional high heart-rate work preserve power, strength, and vitality. Nutrition Can Undo or Multiply Results Post-workout "rewards," restaurant meals, and hidden sugars often cancel out hard work. Real food, protein-forward meals, and preparation are key. Menopause Requires Strategy, Not Fear Women can and should train hard—but with intelligence. Managing cortisol, avoiding excessive HIIT, lifting weights, and supporting muscle retention are critical. Consistency Beats Motivation Results come from showing up repeatedly—not from willpower bursts. Small, daily commitments create lasting change. Mindset Determines Success The difference between people who succeed and those who don't comes down to ownership, positivity, and asking "How can I?" instead of "Why can't I?" Community Fuels Sustainability Longevity thrives in connection. Training with like-minded people keeps motivation high and loneliness low. Memorable Quotes "You're not rewarding yourself when you eat junk after a workout—you're undoing the work you just did." "Consistency becomes even more important as we age." "You don't stop training hard—you train smarter." "Muscle is the hardest thing for women to maintain over 50, and it's the most important." "What makes you feel old is saying you're old." "Just come tomorrow. That's it." "You have to stop asking why you can't and start asking how you can." "Your body isn't meant to get smaller—it's meant to get stronger." How to Get a BLACKBELT.....from Me.

The Hickory Academy Leadership Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2025 10:39

#1) Be consistent. That means training two to three classes a week. Your house does not count, coming in and assistant instructing does not count. You should be on the mat training twice a week if your intention is to get a black belt. If not….you can still get an enormous benefit of training once a week, or twice a week every other week, etc…..you just aren't going to earn a black belt until you get serious about your attendance. Just like you can get very knowledgeable about medicine and surgery at the library and attending some classes at college…..but until you commit to medical school and graduate….you will not be a doctor. #2) Train Hard, Train Smart. You can come in and give a halfhearted effort, you can come in and train like every fight is personal…..neither will earn you a black belt. The lukewarm person will not gain the real skills to pass, and definitely not survive the test, the overzealous person will end up hurting themselves or getting too injured to train frequently enough to test, or have the finesse required to become a black belt. #3) Know the Curriculum.  We have had many world champions and amazing athletes at the Academy, all of them that received black belts know the curriculum and are able to teach it. You don't have to love all of it, and in fact most gravitate to one of the big four: Fighting, Forms, Self Defense, or Pad Work…but you have to know it all and be able to demonstrate it. #4) Be a Good Ambassador. In some fields your talent can make up for your personality, in martial arts it cannot. You have to be a good role model….not a perfect person, but a person in pursuit of perfection. #5) Be in Shape. You do not have to be an Olympian, D1 athlete or on the cover of Muscle and Fitness….but you should be in good cardiovascular shape, be strong, and have healthy habits. That means making sacrifices outside of the Dojo for your health and fitness and should reflect a life long goal of longevity and good overall health. #6) Be Motivated. You should come to class ready to learn and your passion for training and improving should be evident. Everyone has tough days and we are here to support your through those….but not every day. You are responsible for being passionate about growth, getting better, and being the best version of you! #7) Be Positive. Very similar to number 6, and maybe even more important. “Where attention goes, energy flows.” especially when we are talking about having a positive or negative mindset. What to find the good in your life…start looking for it, what to find the bad…..start looking for it. Find the good in martial arts, and training hard! #8) Be ok with walking alone. Walking with friends is always more fun, it just is. Training with friends is too. Understand however some of your training partners are going to break your heart. Everyone does not make it to black belt, and even some of the ones that do will quit. They are really quitting on themselves….but it feels like they are quitting on you and the Academy. That's difficult to deal with, but it's a part of high level success at anything. Sometimes we have to be ok with walking alone. #9) Bring Someone with you. The antidote for #8! Invite people to train, encourage them to stay, invest in their success and watch your success skyrocket. #10) Have a White Belt Attitude, with a Black belt Brain. White belts are so excited and grateful to train, they give it 100 percent and desperately want to improve…..their only hindrance is the lack of repetition and knowledge. As people increase in rank that fire can diminish. The saddest thing I see is a Green/Brown belt that has gone lukewarm, cynical, or thinks they know everything. Have a white belt mentality, upgraded with the reps and knowledge of a black belt. It truly is the best of both worlds.

In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw and Dr. Stewart Hilliard discuss: The debate between purely positive training and balanced training.  How Kynology goes deeper than just basic dog training.  Ways in which the scientific process in research can go wrong.  The role of a canine trainer to teach their dog to handle stress.  Stewart's two answers to the question "Why do you need aggression?"   Key Takeaways: While there are about 25 research studies that create the canon of dog training, a lot of them are based on pure science or theory alone and do not actually understand the practicality of dog training.  Research is often not replicated enough to know if the original model and data were structured and analyzed properly.  Punishing behaviors into existence is not really a thing that happens in real life, human, ethical training.  Good practitioners don't teach with adversives. They use aversives to facilitate generalization of behaviors that are established using positive reinforcement and generalization of those behaviors to different physiological and emotional states.   "You and I, in February, are going to run a seminar under the aegis of kynology. It's an effort…to provide really good, solid, formal education to other kynologists - which means people who are really, really interested in dogs, dog behavior, and learning. Not in a casual way, but those who want to know everything they can." —  Dr. Stewart Hilliard   Episode References:  Go to Kynology.org now and start an account to stay up to date on Kynology events, upcoming resources, and products!   Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Contact Stewart:  Website: https://www.caninetrainingsystems.com/  Book:  Schutzhund, Theory and Training Methods - A Book by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hilliard, Ph.D. - https://www.caninetrainingsystems.com/product/B-SCH-BAR/Schutzhund-Theory-and-Training-Methods-A-Book-by-Susan-Barwig-and-Stewart-Hilliard-PhD      Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training: www.tarheelcanine.com Youtube:  tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon:   patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine  Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/  Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/    Sponsors:  ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/  The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co    Find out more about Hold The Line Conference 2024 at https://htlk9.com/    Train Hard, train smart, be safe.     Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw and Cameron Ford discuss: The creation of PSA and evolution of dog sport. How the rigidity in traditional dog sports has led to innovation and creativity. Being open to adaptation not fighting against it. Increasing complexity in training detection.  The responsibility of having an online platform for your dog training.  Training based on experience and on research.    Key Takeaways: PSA exploded in popularity the last decade due to the prevalence of younger trainers and social media.  A lot of traditional dog sport is built around breeding programs and registering your dogs. PSA allows for dogs of any breed and age as long as they can handle the training.  If you're interested in your dogs learning detection, teach your puppies to track and hunt. It is key for police work.  Training detection dogs is about more than odor, no matter what changes have occurred over the years.  Adjusting to what the dog is doing during training when they aren't following your progressions is where the fun and intrigue comes in.  Training is not a race. Do it right from the beginning and it will create a stronger, better dog than if you try and do it all in just a few weeks.    "Unfortunately, a lot of dog trainers get married to doing something because it's the way they've always done and they feel comfortable with it. In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw and Brad Gillespie discuss: Positive and negative punishment in police dog training.  Pros, cons, and balancing the use of punishment markers.  Intentional and unintentional markers. The importance of consistency in punishment.  Marking for clearer communication. Biting through the muzzle.  Changing one variable at a time and reducing the number of variables in training.   Key Takeaways: In some cases, marking punishment may be more important than marking with positive reinforcement. Following the punishment marker with the punishment allows the dogs to understand what is happening. Be careful about the overuse of those punishment markers. They can oftentimes create a drift where the marker itself becomes the signal for the dog to rectify the behavior, rather than when you give that command. You need to be consistent in your timing and ready with the punishment. Dogs are great at recognizing when things are consistent or not.  Communication is the problem with most issues we have with dogs. Marking punishment is a way that can help us to have clearer communication. Train the dog (and the handler) in a way that makes it look and feel real.   "I really think that using a marker can allow us, both on negative reinforcement and on positive punishment, to use much higher levels of stimulation, and the dogs are able to better process what's happening. We have a system, or at least a way of communicating with the dog. And I think that the marker helps them understand that a little bit better on both ends of the spectrum." —  Brad Gillespie   Contact Brad:  Website: CanadianPoliceCanine.com   Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training:  www.tarheelcanine.com YouTube:  tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon: patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine  Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/  Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/    Sponsors:  ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/  The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co    Find out more about Hold The Line Conference 2024 at https://htlk9.com/    Train Hard, train smart, be safe.   Show notes by Podcastologist Chelsea Taylor-Sturkie   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
