This is a podcast meant to bring about meaningful conversations on fly fishing, creativity, business, and everything in between. The goal of this podcast is to highlight the importance of how creativity and outdoor recreation can lead to a better life. In some episodes, we will strictly talk about fly fishing-related topics but we want to dive deeper than that. We want to better understand why people do what they do and bring about tangible information that our audience can take and apply to their next adventure. I don't claim to be a professional in any of the fields above, but I hope to learn as we go and learn from the guests that we bring onto the show. This podcast is designed for you--the audience--and I hope that we can bring about conversations that will help elevate your game in whatever field that may be. Listeners of The Wild Fly Podcast that love the show mention: tight lines,The Wild Fly Podcast is a unique combination of fly fishing, creativity, and business, hosted by Scottie. As a long-time follower of their YouTube channel, I was thrilled when they announced their foray into the podcasting world. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! This podcast is a great listen for anyone interested in fly fishing or even just the outdoors in general.
One of the best aspects of The Wild Fly Podcast is how Scottie manages to seamlessly blend his love for fly fishing with his creativity and business mindset. It's not just about casting a line and catching fish; it's about the artistry and passion that goes into it. Scottie brings on guests who share their own unique perspectives on fly fishing, providing listeners with a well-rounded experience. The conversations are honest, genuine, and incredibly relatable. You feel like you're in the room talking with them.
Another highlight of this podcast is its educational value. As someone who started fly fishing without a mentor, I appreciate that The Wild Fly Podcast serves as a learning resource for beginners like myself. Whether it's discussing fishing techniques or sharing insights into the filmmaking process behind their videos, there's always something new to learn from each episode. It gives beginners hope and motivation to keep going and pursue their passion for fly fishing.
If I had to nitpick, one minor drawback of this podcast is that episodes can sometimes be on the shorter side. Although they pack a lot of valuable content into each episode, I find myself wanting more once it's over. However, this is purely subjective as some listeners may prefer shorter episodes.
In conclusion, The Wild Fly Podcast is an incredible addition to the already amazing content produced by Scottie and his team. It offers a unique blend of fly fishing knowledge, creative insight, and business inspiration that appeals to both beginners and experienced anglers alike. If you're a fan of the YouTube channel or simply have an interest in the outdoors, I highly recommend giving this podcast a listen. Happy tight lines!

This past summer, we teamed up with talented filmmakers Will Phelps, as well as, Chase & Aimee Bartee of Tight Loops to document and produce a collaborative film "Hope & High Water." The film chronicles our quest to find the Yellowstone Cutthroat trout deep in the heart of their native range. After premiering the film to over 500 people in Salt Lake City and Denver, the crew sat down to relive their August trip and explore the inner workings of the film and the logic behind using the "Pay what you think is fair" model.Order "HOPE & HIGH WATER" HERE.Subscribe to Will's channel : https://www.youtube.com/@PhelpsontheFlySubscribe to Tight Loops' channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TightLoopsShop the Wild Fly X Tight Loops "Hope & High Water" Apparel collection HERE.
My buddy Will Phelps & I spent 4 days fly fishing & living out of his van in Canada this summer. We explored old & new creeks and stumbled on some of the best fishing of the summer. Like any fishing trip, many things did not go as planned and we had our fair share of sketchy events including a massive hail storm while mid-way through our float trip. We dive into the whole trip and share a lot that wasn't covered in the full episodes. Sit back and enjoy! Just a few weeks ago, I didn't even own a bike. But here we were, climbing up an old service road in the middle of nowhere Idaho and I was starting to feel the reality of my inexperience. We were here to fish, but truthfully it was hard to even think about fishing with what was ahead of us. We were deep in bear country with no cell service, no support vehicle, and no option of turning around. It was just us, our bikes, and hopefully everything we needed to survive for the next six days. This is the full story of that trip.Wild Fly Apparel http://www.wild-fly.com/shop
Today is a special episode featuring none other than my Mom. My mom was the first one to introduce me to fly fishing and she's been my number 1 supporter of Wild Fly since Day 1. Just last year, she left her job to come work for me full time to handle our merch fulfillment operations. So anytime one of you orders a piece of gear from us, she is the one handling it. In this episode, we talk about what it's been like for her to step into this position, especially with me living in Utah now. We also dive into our family lineage in fly fishing, her upbringing in the outdoors and what the early days of Wild Fly looked like. I have always wanted to have a conversation like this with her and I'm excited to share it with all of you. For Free Shipping on Wild Fly gear use code WILDFLYPODCAST

In October, I was able to sit down with one of my favorite bands ONA. Ona is a 5 piece band from West Virginia who all grew up in the same hometown. They released their first album in 2016 and have since released their second album in 2019. They have toured with artists such as Tyler Childers, Caamp & Houndmouth. A few days before this recording they had played their first-ever Red Rocks show. We talked about what that experience was like and how they formed as a band. 2 of the band members, 'Jeeter' and Zach, are actually big fly fishermen and we got to hear all about the fly fishing in their hometown. They also talked about the realities of being on tour and how they have been able to find time to fly fish while on the road. It's an awesome conversation and was really fun to hear the parallels that fly fishing and music shared with one another. I hope you enjoy it!Check out our brand-new 'Early Riser' Merch drop: https://wild-fly.com/
In August, we spent 5 days exploring the backcountry of Idaho in search of Bull Trout. It was a jam-packed week and we learned a ton about Bull Trout. In this episode, we give you an exclusive in-depth look into that trip. Watch the film here:
Karson Decker, Shane Hines, and Paco Eby from Due South Outfitters join the podcast to talk summer fishing in the high country, the 17 year Brood X Cicada Hatch, and the Dangers of Social Media on fly fishing. We go into depth about summer fishing tactics and how to find fish when the weather starts heating up. These guys spend every day on the water and have picked up some pretty crafty techniques that they share throughout. We also talk about the 17-year Brood X Cicada Hatch and stories from fishing it earlier this summer. Also, we discuss situations that have come up recently in the fishing world, and how social media has played a role in them. It's the first episode we have done in the Due South fly shop and the boys bring out the vices throughout to spin up some bugs and streamers. Make sure to stop by Due South Outfitters the next time you swing into Boone, NC. Cheers!https://www.duesouthoutfitters.com/
Chase and Aimee Bartee are Award-Winning Adventure Filmmakers and owners of Tight Loops. They have produced some of the best fly fishing films out there and have recently released, their award-winning film, BIG LAND on YouTube. If you haven't seen BIG LAND, you need to stop reading this and go watch it ASAP. They recently ditched their apartment in New England and took to the road to live full time in their VW van "Bullwinkle." With this move, they have been able to simplify their lives and explore some of the best fisheries the Western United States has to offer. It was a pleasure sitting down with them to talk about the early days of Tight Loops. To talk about filmmaking and the lessons they've learned over the years. We also talk about their latest project BIG LAND and what went into planning such a massive expedition. Being 100 + miles away from the closest road and spending 2 weeks living off of the land is an incredible feat and in this episode, you'll get to hear first-hand what that experience looked like. It's a jam-packed episode that could have been 4 hours long if we didn't lose light and I can't wait to have these guys back on. Enjoy!
Adam, Bryant, & Steve join the podcast this week after our recent shoot down in Alabama. We spent 6 days chasing smallmouth around Northern Alabama & Middle Tennessee. In doing so, we took a night to talk through why we all have gravitated towards smallmouth fishing. We share some of our top secrets for finding smallmouth streams and then how to actually target them. Gear also comes up in the discussion and we all share our go-to setups when it comes to smallmouth fishing. It's an action-packed episode that will surely provide you with some insightful information on smallmouth so you can get out and start targeting them yourself. We go on a few minor tangents (like any podcast), but they all land on points that we hope you guys can learn from and apply to your fishing game. If you've been looking for a place to start learning about smallmouth, this is where you need to be. Enjoy, my friends!Make sure to check out http://www.bluelineflies.com
Bryant Patterson joins the podcast again for the second time. This time, we talked about our ideal camera setup for shooting fly fishing. We get so many questions about gear so we figured it would be fun to go over some of what we use for run and gun scenarios. We also talk about specific filming techniques we use and how we use those shots throughout a video. Another thing we go over is the importance of organizing your footage and Bryant breaks down how he keeps his hard drives organized. It’s a really fun conversation and for anyone interested in filming, I think you’ll really enjoy it.Follow Bryant on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/brpatt/Wild Fly apparel is available at https://www.wild-fly.com/shop
In today’s episode, our guest is my good friend CJ Lord. CJ is an incredible fisherman and probably most well-known for his ability to consistently target big brown trout. He has spent the last few years dedicated to exploring new water and testing out different streamer techniques that best trigger predatory fish. In this conversation, we talk about those techniques but more importantly, we talk about why he is using them and how he changes up tactics in different situations. We also talk about the type of water you should look for when targeting big browns and how they move around throughout the year. So if you’re anyone who is looking to target bigger fish or you want to have a better grip on streamer fishing, I think you’re gonna really enjoy this conversation. Cj's Instagram https://www.instagram.com/cjlord/ Also, I wanted to let you guys know that we just dropped our Spring Apparel line on our website. In this episode, I got the chance to sit down with my friend Cory Brick. Cory is an ex-marine and the owner of New Life Farms just outside of Boone, North Carolina. Cory and I met through 2 of my best friends, who have worked for him over the years. I would always hear them talking about Cory and how he had made such a big impact on their lives. I finally had the chance to meet him—a few weeks back—and we hit it off. He’s an extremely driven, hardworking, and caring person who has learned almost everything he knows through trial and error. In our conversation, we talk about realistic goal setting and what it really takes to achieve those goals. We also talk about how to deal with the uncertainties that life, business and fly fishing bring us. I was honestly surprised with how much of what Cory has learned through his Farming business applies to what I do and really just life in general. He’s an extraordinary guy and shares a ton of valuable wisdom that I hope can benefit all of you. I really enjoyed this talk and I know you will too. Will Phelps is a Georgia native, residing in the northern parts of Montana. He moved out west, a few years back, because of his love for fly fishing and the outdoors. While getting into fly fishing, he started bringing a camera along to document his trips. He produced short films that he shared on YouTube and eventually found an opportunity to work with the photographer, Bryan Gregson. Since then, Will has sharpened his skills behind the lens and has produced some incredible videos for some of the biggest brands in the industry. In this episode, we talk about how he has been able to make a career out of producing fly fishing content and the realities of what that really looks like. Will shares some of his filming secrets and his biggest mistakes that he made early on. We go into depth about what our processes' look like when producing a film and the biggest lessons we've learned through filming fly fishing. Josh Brady of Brady's Handmade Nets joins us to talk fishing, entrepreneurship, and the art of net making. We get to hear about the story of Brady's Handmade Nets and how it has come to be what it is today. After a scary injury, a few years back, Josh had the option to get back into welding or pursue a career in craftsmanship. He talks us through that time and how he was able to turn a side-hobby of craftsmanship into a career in the fly fishing industry. Josh is one of the most genuine people I know and it was a pleasure talking with him. Griff Washburn (aka Goth Babe) is a musician, avid outdoorsman, and overall badass. He started out his music career recording songs in his Truck camper while traveling out west. He now lives in a tiny home—that he built—and has over 1.6 Million monthly listeners on Spotify. His recording process is simple yet unique as he’s able to create such a full sound with limited resources and space. When he’s not recording music, you can find him surfing, climbing, snowboarding, or riding motorcycles and probably somewhere out of service. I enjoyed getting to talk with him about his story, his process, and what drives him as an artist. If you haven’t already, go check out Goth Babe on any music platform, I promise you won’t regret it. Karson Decker is a Boone, North Carolina Native and knows just about everything you need to know about Small Stream fishing. He started working at Due South Outfitters when he was 14 and took his first guided trip at 15. He's only 20 now but he's one of the best fly fishermen that I know. We are also joined by, Max Beck, the owner of Due South Outfitters (who was on EP #03). Being that we all reside in Boone, NC, small stream fishing is our jam. So, I took to Instagram and had you guys send in questions about Small Stream fishing. We received hundreds of questions and in this episode, we got to tackle some of those. Karson & Max offer a lot of tangible advice for anyone interested in upping their small stream game and anyone trying to find new places to fish. We talk about local privatization issues we face in North Carolina and how you can get away from pressured fisheries. Our hope, with this episode, is that you can take some of these tools away and apply them to your own fly fishing game. This isn't about the places we have fished, the flies we use, or the gear we like but rather a conversation that can be a catalyst. A catalyst to help you take initiative in getting out and growing as an angler, yourself. We hope you enjoy it and please share this with anyone else who could benefit from this conversation. To book a trip with Due South Outfitters, go to www.duesouthoutfitters.comSocial Media pages @kdecker25 @maxbeckflyfishing @duesouthoutfitters

In this conversation, we got to talk about how she was introduced to the world of design, the challenges she's dealt with, and the valuable lessons she's learned as a freelancer. We talk about the importance of branding and what the process looks like when working with a client. This is a great conversation for you creators out there. This episode is a special one. My cousins Adam, David, & Charlie joined me on the podcast for our Christmas Edition episode. These are the guys I grew up with, started fly fishing with, & started filming Wild Fly videos with. They have been here since Day 1 of Wild Fly and have seen it mature at almost every step. In this episode, Max Beck joins me to talk about guiding in college, lessons he's learned from fly fishing, and taking over Due South Outfitters. 2020 has been an amazing year for Max as he graduated college, became the owner of Due South Outfitters, and even got married! He's a stand-up guy and one badass guide. I had a lot of fun hearing about his upbringing and what lead him to fishing and eventually how he landed at App State. In his college years, he spent almost more time on the water than he did in class while still maintaining a top tier GPA. His growth as an angler happened quite exponentially during college which truly exemplifies the importance of Time On the Water. There are a lot of valuable nuggets of wisdom to take away from this conversation and I hope you guys enjoy it!If you'd like to learn more about Due South Outfitters or book a trip with Max, visit https://www.duesouthoutfitters.com/To shop Wild Fly apparel, visit https://www.wild-fly.com/shop
In this episode, my friend Bryant Patterson joins me to talk all about filmmaking, fishing, and working with the Googan Squad. Bryant is an extremely talented filmmaker, photographer, and just overall creative. He grew up in Northern Alabama chasing smallmouth bass in the surrounding areas. He started bringing a camera along on his trips and documenting his time fishing. His passion for filmmaking and fly fishing grew together as he went into college and by the end of school, he was on his way to making a career for himself in the filmmaking world. Bryant now works for the well-known Fishing company "The Googan Squad" and has worked with some of the biggest fishing brands in the industry. Over the last few years, he has really dialed in his production process and we talk about that in the conversation. He also shares some valuable advice for filmmakers, especially in the fishing world. With Bryant always behind the camera, it was fun getting to sit down and pick his brain on his process and what lead him down this career path. Hope you enjoy it!To check out Bryant's work you can go to bryantpatterson.com or follow him on Instagram @brpatt
To kick the podcast off on the right foot, I had my friends Adam & Steve from Blue Line Flies on to talk. Adam and Steve are lifelong best friends from Northern Alabama who grew up chasing smallmouth on their local rivers. With no fly shop in their area, they were left having to get their hands dirty and figure out how this whole fly fishing thing was done, on their own. Fly tying became a necessity for them with a lack of accessibility to flies & outfitters. This all played into the formation of Blue Line Flies and what it is today. Adam & Steve offer some great lessons for anglers--of all levels--as they had to figure out much of what they know on their own. They highlight their shortcomings when growing up and how other anglers can excel quicker than they did. We also talk about the Short Bus Diaries, Northern Natives and other film projects we are working on. You'll get to hear more about how we met and how we started making trips together. This was an awesome conversation and I hope you all enjoy. Check out Blue Line Flies here to support https://www.bluelineflies.com/Wild Fly apparel is available at www.wild-fly.com/shop
