On February 22nd, 2024, there was a North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission meeting and false albacore was on the agenda. The item for discussion was guard rail management for albies. The three options were essentially do nothing, monitor the situation , or if landings exceed 200% of a five-year average, take action. That action would be implementing regulations including a 3500lb trip limit for commercial vessels and a 10 fish per person limit (max of 30 per vessel) for recreational vessels. The vote was close, but Option 3 (take action) passed. For the very first time, false albacore finally have some level of state management.#BetterBusinessThroughConservationPresented by Costa Sunglasses.
Basic guardrail management has been proposed for the false albacore fishery in North Carolina. In simplest terms, the rule established basic guardrails for false albacore if the state finds a significant increase in landings compared to a five-year average of landings. Editor's Note: In this episode of the GearJunkie Podcast, we sit down with Bureo Co-Founder & CEO David Stover. Bureo converts plastic ocean pollution into recycled fibers and consumer goods, with major partners like Patagonia, Trek Bikes, Costa Sunglasses, and more. Whether he was surfing, free-diving, swimming, you name it — David Stover kept finding plastic trash in the ocean. As someone who loves the water, it hit him really hard. “You might just drive by it on the road,” the Bureo Co-founder and CEO said. But as a surfer, Stover often received a daily reminder of the worsening problem. “You take it really personally,” he added. Founded in 2013, Bureo is known for its unique approach to recycling and repurposing discarded fishing nets — a major contributor to ocean plastic — into high-quality products. The company's proprietary material, NetPlus, is currently being leveraged by major brands like Patagonia, Trek Bikes, Costa Sunglasses, and more in a variety of product offerings. (Photo/Bureo) A Mission is Born Stover grew up surrounded by water, on Block Island, Rhode Island. He never considered himself an environmentalist — Being a good steward to the land was just the right thing to do. But as he and his co-founders noticed more and more debris in the water, they felt the need to take action. “Once you start seeing plastic in the ocean, you can’t not see it,” he emphasized. After consulting with leading experts and absorbing many firsthand, anecdotal experiences, it became obvious to Stover that a significant percentage of waste was coming from the fishing industry — especially netting. (Photo/Bureo) Years later, Bureo is converting this type of waste into consumer products, like jackets, sunglasses, hats, shorts, even skateboards. In fact, the brand's first product was the Minnow Cruiser Skateboard. “We were building a niche skateboard company, and to us, that was exciting!” Stover remembered. “One of the biggest takeaways from our first products was that people were more on board with the mission of converting these nets into a product that they were necessarily skateboarding.” Slow and Steady Growth Bureo is on a much more modest growth trajectory than other successful young companies. In its first year, when the brand was just making skateboards, it converted 10 tons of material, which amounts to roughly half a shipping container of nets. A promising start, but not enough to make a serious dent in reducing global waste. However, by 2023, the company was converting over 1650 tons of material, roughly 80 to 100 shipping containers of plastic netting. The scale of the operation is growing exponentially, but it’s still just a drop in the bucket. (Photo/Bureo) As Stover explained, recycling alone will not solve the plastic problem, and a multi-pronged approach is needed, including reducing plastic consumption and exploring alternative materials.“We have to stop making as much new plastic as we’ve been making every year in order to really start winning that battle,” he reiterated. “Once these producers of new plastic are really focusing their investments and facilities and equipment on regenerative materials or alternative materials, the real change will come.” What is NetPlus? Bureo’s focus is on collecting and recycling fishing nets, but they also aim to address the end-of-life disposal of products made from these materials. To that end, in 2014, the fledgling company caught the eye of Patagonia, which took interest in the brand's early technology and mission. With the investment of the much-larger outdoor apparel company, Bureo committed to a path of product-oriented R&D that has culminated in Bureo's proprietary NetPlus material. (Photo/Bureo) Found in some of Patagonia's most popular products (Baggies, anyone?), NetPlus is made from 100% post-consumer recycled fishing nets. And while that seems impressive, the company also partners directly with fishing communities to collect their end-of-life fishing net waste. These partnerships divert a large flow of pollution away from these coastal communities, ultimately preventing substantial amounts of plastic from reaching the open ocean. Working For Change Stover still surfs often, and despite the overwhelming odds against his endeavor, he still feels optimistic during those sessions that he's on the right course and others will take up the cause in the future. Over the years, Bureo has made significant strides in achieving its mission. The company has successfully established partnerships with fishing communities, incentivizing the proper disposal of fishing nets and preventing them from becoming ocean waste. (Photo/Bureo) Moreover, Bureo has expanded its product line to include a variety of sustainable goods, such as skateboards, sunglasses, and other lifestyle products, all made from recycled materials. But more than those things, Bureo’s innovative approach has positioned the company as a trailblazer in the fight against ocean plastic pollution and providing a template for other, future companies that seek to get involved in the mission. “When it’s only doom and gloom — it’s really hard to see what difference you can make,” Stover concluded. ”But when you look at the youth … I see that generation taking [pollution] really personally. … that gives me hope that we’re inspiring the next generation to be more responsible.” The post You Can Use Fishing Nets To Make Rad Gear appeared first on GearJunkie.

At the start of the winter season, the gap between striped bass managers and their constituents was akin to the Grand Canyon - and somehow ASMFC has found a way to continue to grow that gap. The public outcry for guardrails for conservation equivalency (CE) was deafening. Today we rise and CE lives on. We were told it would take an addendum to Amendment 7 to establish these guardrails but there was “no appetite for an immediate addendum”. Well, last week we were presented a Draft Addendum 1 to allow commercial quota transfers for striped bass. The ASGA team remains committed to being honest brokers when it comes to striped bass management. We are not “anti-commercial”. We continue to amplify discussions focused on fixing the issues within our own recreational community. That being said, this commercial quota transfer addendum is not good - nor should it go unaddressed by striped bass community stakeholders. This is not what YOU asked for in your fishery - and now the time has come to remind ASMFC exactly that. This podcast is presented by Costa Sunglasses.Follow ASGA on Social to stay up to date on current events!Instagram = @SaltwaterGuidesAssociationFacebook = American Saltwater Guides Association
The fight to reform striped bass management has been a long and arduous process. The number one issue for the voices involved has been putting guardrails on Conservation Equivalency (CE). Over 98% of public comments fully supported adding these guardrails. Yet, after the entire Amendment 7 process, CE stills sits on the table in front of us.This podcast is presented by Costa Sunglasses.Follow ASGA on Social to stay up to date on current events!Instagram = @SaltwaterGuidesAssociationFacebook = American Saltwater Guides Association

In this episode I sit down with Jeff Currier. Jeff has fished in over sixty countries and has landed over 430 species on a fly rod, I think I need to say that again just so it resonates with people, 60 countries and 430 species on a fly rod. Unreal… Jeff was born in Massachusetts and grew up fly fishing throughout New England. After graduating from High School, his search for new fly fishing adventures led him to Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. After four years of hardcore fly fishing for walleye, Northern pike and muskellunge, he graduated with a Naturalist Degree. After graduation he headed for Wyoming for a summer of trout bumming. This led to a fly shop management job in Jackson, Wyoming that for the next 23 years would guide him fly fishing around the world. Jeff's articles, photographs and artwork have graced the pages of magazines, catalogs, brochures and books. Jeff is the acclaimed author of Currier's Quick and Easy Guide to Saltwater Fly Fishing and Currier's Quick and Easy Guide to Warmwater Fly Fishing guide books. He is a well sought after expert for television and commentary on radio appearing on Fishing the West, Fly Fishing the World, In Search of Fly Water, Reel Adventures, Fly Fish TV, Fly Fish America and Ask About Fly Fishing Internet Radio. He was also a featured angler in the popular fly fishing movies Connect, Waypoints, Soulfish 2, Carpland Evolution, Kendjam and Atlanticus. One of Jeff's most recognized accomplishments was leading Team USA to its first ever top-ten finish in the World Flyfishing Championships in Jaca, Spain. During the competition Jeff managed to fool fish on every venue and placed third in the individual standings, becoming the first American ever to take home a medal in the thirty year history of the Championships. When the Fly Fishing Show season kicks off, Jeff can be found with crowds of people watching, listening and actively participating in his presentations. Jeff's programs entertain, inform and instruct through his stories and beautiful photography. Jeff is an active member of the R.L. Winston Rod Co, Simms Fishing Products, Scientific Anglers, Bauer Reels, Yeti, Costa Sunglasses, Kate's Real Foods, Fly Fishers International and Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures as well as a fly fishing lecturer and well known fish artist. I have been fortunate to know Jeff for over 20 years and we have been able to do some amazing trips together, the Amazon, Bhutan to name a few and all around the Rocky Mountain West. We were featured in the film Carpland together which was another adventure in itself locally. Jeff's sense of humor and authenticity follows him wherever he goes. He has a unique ability to be at ease in all situations (even when being smuggled in and out of India). Today Jeff resides in Hayward, Wisconsin with his wife Yvonne where he bases his globe-trotting career in fly fishing. Mike Holliday's spectrum in the fishing realm has been expansive and varied. He graduated with a degree in Marine Science but his adventurous mind pursued many facets, including time as an ocean lifeguard EMT, an extensive writer authoring six books, editor of two magazines and had bylines for ESPN, and The Miami Herald. He also worked as a marketing visionary for two major companies during their infancy, Maverick Boats and Costa Sunglasses, both became giants of our sport. He also authored seven books and was a highly sought after guide for close to 40 years. All along he's watched the slow decline of his beloved resource, which has ultimately lead him to his finest hour as a conservationist. He's driven to save the habitat and fish he loves so deeply. And his voice has incredible impact, inspiring fellow guides and anglers alike to join his army. Working with Captains For Clean Water, he and many others convinced Tallahassee, lawmakers, and Governor DeSantis to “Kill The Bill 2508” which was a success. Hell Yea! Holiday doesn't dabble with anything he puts his mind to. He engages, grows and refines his craft he's committed himself to. His energy is infectious. I know that whenever i'm going to be in his presence good things happen, just like on this compelling podcast with him. It's impossible to dislike the guy, because his attention to you is true to his core.... No bullshit with Mike Holliday. Sure we all like to joke around, but when Mexico is in town, just stand back, watch and listen, it's a hell of a ride! We dare you not to love HIM! Thanks so much for coming on, Mike!

There's a reason a strenuous outing makes you desire a greasy mound of meat: it has a lot of what your body needs. This we learned from talking to six Outside writers and editors about their greatest aprés-adventure burgers, and by unpacking their stories with the help of two registered dietitians. As it turns out, most of us are underfed when we head into the wild, and the result is a deep hunger for carbs, protein, and fat. Which means that, physiological speaking, a burger delivers. What she got, however, was a lot of whining and grief from troublemaking clients, including a deranged madman and a guy who kept peeing on another rider's tent. In this episode of our Summer Read series, she describes how her fantasy went so, so wrong. To portray the hero of the Thai cave rescue in the new film Thirteen Lives, the Hollywood star had to go deep—literally. Mortensen plays the part of Rick Stanton, the legendary British cave diver who helped lead the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from the far reaches of a flooded cavern in northern Thailand. The actor's preparation included months of conversations with Stanton and a harrowing cave-diving adventure of his own. In this episode, producer Paddy O'Connell talks with both men about what it takes to endure the mental and physical challenges of swimming through dark, tight spaces, where just one mistake can kill you. A group of high school sophomores set off on what was supposed to be a grand climb. Instead, it became one of the deadliest alpine disasters in North American history. It was 1986, and the Oregon students were seeking to complete an adventure program with the support of professional guides. As they made their way toward the 11,235-foot summit, a vicious storm hit. In this episode of our Summer Read series, we revisit a feature by writer Pauls Toutonghi that chronicles the tragedy and its enduring impact on a community that it changed forever. Can a relationship survive a grand adventure? That was the big question hanging over two novice sailors as they set out on a voyage off the coast of New England. It all began when Claire Antoszewski had the idea to refurbish an old boat with her partner Will Grant, a man who is most comfortable on a horse. With dreams of a leisurely cruise, they got to work—and soon found themselves at the helm of the Lower Goose in high seas and nasty weather. Not surprisingly, they have different takes on what happened. In this episode of our Summer Read series, we hear both sides of the story and learn some lessons about how to carefully mix romance and risk. When Cody Sheehy was six years old, he disappeared into the wilderness of northeast Oregon. Now, more than three decades later, he insists that the harrowing experience gave him an invaluable life lesson. In this second episode of our Summer Read series, we recount how he wandered into the forest and made his way back to safety some 18 hour later, all on his own. The story, written for Outside by environmental journalist Emma Marris, investigates what it takes to get through such an ordeal at a young age, and how it can stick with us forever. A father and son working a crab boat in Chesapeake Bay were caught in a rising storm when they realized that something was very wrong: water was coming up through the floor. They radioed for help and then did everything they could to save themselves, while the isolated community of Tangier Island quickly launched a desperate bid to rescue two of their own. So began the saga of the Henrietta C., a riveting story chronicled in Outside by Virginia-based writer Earl Swift. This is the first episode in a new six-episode summer weekend series for the podcast that presents reads of exceptional features, both new articles and gems from the Outside archives. Why are eyeglasses so expensive? The answer is simple, one company not only makes them, but they also own the stores where they are sold. The company is Essilor Luxottica, and they are the maker of Ray-Ban, Oakley, and now Costa Sunglasses. They also own LensCrafters and Sunglass Hut. Keri and Jeni discuss this and Jeni's recent experience, shopping for new glasses and why the price seems to be the same, with or without insurance.
