Whenever possible Jennifer Caroline Campbell obsessively cultivates a shifting bag of mixed fragments, recombining, contaminating and navigating without a map. Textures and stories build up like minerals. The crystal bundles snowball and scatter into multicoloured slices, oscillating shiftily between slathered picture and lumpy thing. Through reckless and rhythmic process new thoughts are shaped and multiple characters are inhabited. They exchange gossip stumblingly while glancing and clutching at the surrounding terrain. This process is both childish play and serious questioning. It is honed in order to expose unseen power cloggings, weave silken nets, nourish unsolved shadows and side-step claustrophobic categorisations.

Ross Taylor was born in 1982 in Harrow, London, where he continues to live and work. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Painting, he was awarded the Abbey Scholarship at the British School at Rome and was artist in residence at the Edward James Foundation. Taylor's work is concerned with an emergent space; a swilling and churning dual sphere of production and consumption where all that enters is incessantly gnawed, singed and regurgitated. He sees the studio as a restless stomach-cave which rages, and correspondingly pacifies. A place wherein each stain, drip, blob, and smear, can appear to congeal, much like grammar. And, through the contemplation of this surface, each idea, word or moment running through his head has space to intensify, making it conceivable to take control of chaotic ideas, order the subconscious and attempt to model thoughts that are somewhat impossible. Luke Burton (b.1983, London) lives and works in London. He studied at Chelsea College of Art for a BA in Painting and the Royal College of Art for an MA in Sculpture. He works across media including painting, vitreous enamel, collage and installation. He has an ongoing interest in the relation of ambivalence to aesthetics and politics, especially as to how it may pertain to the decorative. He is also interested in the sticky concept of style and its relationship to ideas around language in painting. You can get in touch with us with opinions and suggestions at:Email - tothestudio@gmail.comInstagram - instagram.com/tothestudioThis podcast features an edited version of the song "RSPN" by Blank & Kytt, available under a Creative Commons Attribution license. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Blank__Kytt/Heavy_Crazy_Serious/Blank__Kytt_-_Heavy_Crazy_Serious_-_08_RSPN

His paintings embody the joy of looking and the space of self-reflection that such elation might bring. Jessie Makinson's work is darkly erotic and draws from influences including Ursula Le Guin, British folklore, stories of travelers, myths of pre-agricultural societies, 17th and 18th-century erotica, Flemish kitchen scenes, science fiction, and early Renaissance altarpieces. Makinson readdresses a patriarchal past from a female perspective. Plucking themes and narratives from historical precedent, she creates a bold new context for the motifs she selects. Vivid colors describe tense, erotic scenes in which women are dangerous active participants, not passive permission givers. Makinson's characters practice rituals, they embrace, plot, and conspire. They hold sexual power and disrupt expectations, inhabiting a universe that surprises, delights, and tests its audience. . . Ben Edmunds is a London-based painter, whose deconstructionist approach takes him into sculpture, branding, useful objects and wearable equipment. He is best known for his large scale paintings that combine tropes of modernist abstraction with stylised accents of extreme sports. Drawing on his background in sailing, windsurfing and cycling, his work explores the transcendental possibilities of painting as well as these outdoor leisure pursuits, all the time questioning the assumed anti-utilitarianism of painting and asking “what can an artwork do?”. . . Underwritten into his dyed canvases, handmade carbon fibre components and short incidents of text is the sense that we are unsatisfied, in a perpetual state of wanting and desire. We live in a world of seductive adverts, property ladders, job promotions and romantics affairs, all the while searching in the dark as the clock is ticking. His paintings evoke a distant horizon, something you can never reach or obtain, framed by the equipment you might need for the journey. . . Alongside his painting practice, in 2019 Ben set up Aspirational Equipment. A pseudo sports and lifestyle brand for romantics, it provides tools for explorers and dreamers. It recognises the act of searching as a fundamental human driving force, and the state of being on the way somewhere as a part of the human condition.. . . Tamu Nkiwane is a London-based artist whose work examines his surrounding environment and considers the way value – as a fiscal and cultural consideration – is accumulated and transferred within it. . . John Strutton is an artist, musician and academic based in London. John's work ranges across painting, drawing, installation, moving image, sound and performance. The work often uses the strategy of accrual to deal with a visual form of veneration and cultural reclamation. The resulting installations of paintings, drawings and objects become a kind of makeshift memorial, an ex–voto offering where nostalgia becomes a form of revenge. The sedimentary process creates a convoluted cosmos of effigies, mandalas, portraits and trophies, a graveyard whose architecture is sustained by anxiety. Sometimes brutal, often absurd, his approach to figuration is fractured, automatic and schizophrenic. . . Karolina Albricht (b. 1983 in Krakow) is a London based artist and curator. Karolina graduated with an MA from The Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 2008. Prior to that she completed Socrates-Erasmus at ArtEZ Institute of Fine Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands in 2007. Karolina Albricht thinks of painting as an opening, a stretching beyond dimensionality and optical perception. Its process is driven by curiosity, a desire to see what is possible by negotiating new configurations of form, colour and surface. It is her attempt to generate an active space, an environment which can be perceived and responded to through our intellectual and physical faculties. It is rich, paradoxical, and flexible, embracing a reality in all its multiplicity, its continuous mutation- a state of becoming and a state of exchange. Albricht is interested in the relationship of the body and the space; the way a body corresponds to the space it occupies, how it recalibrates as it moves through it. What she is searching for in painting is a kind of a gap, a dislocation- a glimpse of a possibility. . . Scott McCracken (b. 1987 in Falkirk) is a painter and occasional writer and curator living and working in London. Scott's recent paintings bring together modelled, volumetric forms - spheres, cones, and cylinders are assembled into a configuration that points towards a type of imaginary still life. The geometric substructure within these paintings exists as a binding, yet elastic force, where elements are held in position, suspended in a field of shallow depth. The motifs are pushed together, juxtaposed and conjoined, fluctuating between the diagrammatic and the corporeal, never fully settling as either. . . Mark Selby’s practice mainly revolves around sculpture, installation and film, using an engineering approach to materials, computation and mechanics in order to explore how images, objects and human agency are affected by technological rationality. Creating and collaborating with machines to develop often complex and elongated processes of making, his work asks questions of access to information from both their aesthetics and function; asking what the potential and limits of programming, rules and instructions can offer. . . Jordan Baseman’s work is best described as a synthesis of reportage, portraiture, documentary, creative non-fiction, narrative practices, that are combined with experimental filmmaking techniques. . . We were invited to Jordans Studio for our chat, which is based in East London. Tahmina Negmat is currently on a year-long residency at the Carpenters Wharf Studios in Hackney Wick and making paintings about Joe Exotic from Tiger King in her quarantine flat in Moscow. Tahmina treats her studio as a spectacle arena where she wants to throw a real celebration for the anti-hero the Trickster ("A demonic-comic double of a cultural hero, endowed with the features of a naughty dodger”. For her The Trickster is the main protagonist of today and takes a lot of inspiration from cinema and books. . . As a way into this thinking Tahmina explains that her painting ‘Endless Infatuations with Malcolm Mcdowell', which you can see over on our instagram page is a tribute towards my obsession over the portrait of the antihero. Sh says ‘I have a real antagonistic reaction to pitch-perfect moralism, as I think I see most things that are perfect and clean-cut as a nice antisocial package where the whole investment goes towards oneself. However the anti-heroes are raw, and they are rare. They have this weird self conflicted duality going on. Similarly like looking at the rock in Goya’s painting and never quite seeing just the rock, but the tripled eyed devil, ongoing mutating faces, a depiction of the birth of something and the whole mortality is in that rock. So I see the same rawness and wrongness in the rounded and enlarged facial features of Malcolm McDowell who played a lead role in Kubrick’s “Clockwork Orange”. And Malcolm’s face is round and beautiful like it’s been sat on by the birth of Venus. . . He studied as an undergraduate at Birmingham School of Art in 1990-93 and graduated with a Master's Degree in painting from the Royal College of Art London in 1995. . . Matthew's studio, on the site of an old windmill, is perched on a ridge between valleys. Despite the beautiful views and clear vistas his sense of place is far from sentimental. His relationship with habitat is not one of description or nostalgia, but one of dwelling and ritual. It is a process of mythologising, of drawing meaning from the particularities of the environment, of realising its wilderness and ours. . . I caught up with Matt a week or so after he set up his most recent initiative - The Artist Support Pledge. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many artists have found themselves without work, teaching, technical support, gallery work. The initiative aims to alleviate some of the stress the pandemic has caused, as many artists around the world have now found themselves without work. . . The concept is a simple one. Artists post images of their work, on Instagram which they are willing to sell for no more than £200 each (not including shipping). Anyone can buy the work. Every time an artist reaches £1000 of sales, they pledge to spend £200 on another artist/s work. . . As well as this initiative we talk about his other project -The ABC Projects Atelier that aims to support, create and maintain critical engagement and networks for artists, his interest in wilderness, the importance of support structures and breaking down hierachies, the power of generosity and how artists might readdress their roles with our current systems. . . Ben Jamie’s oil paintings attempt to explore the boundaries between the incongruous and the sentimental, turning the ordinary into the unfamiliar. . . Inspiration comes from many sources, be it studio detritus, fly tipping, trans humanism, conspiracy theories or fast food, and although based somewhere in reality, the paintings are fairly undisturbed by the real world. The paintings depict notional, metamorphic spaces containing their own logic, including shapes that have associations; something in a state of metamorphosis; something responding to an external force or inherent forms discovered in something exposed to an extreme event. . . Open drawing is very important in the construction of the work – paintings are worked over many times, with the final image only being discovered over time. . . Welcome to Episode 8 of To The Studio. This weeks guest is Beatrice Lettice Boyle . . Beatrice Lettice Boyle is interested in Shelley Duvall, bumper stickers, witches/hags, choosing fabric and the seam between things. Recent work has appropriated imagery from 18th century Shunsho woodblock prints, a 16th century painting of the crucifixion attributed to Bosch, 16th century Brueghel landscapes and Disney’s 1937 Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. In Boyle’s installations the references which span eras and hi/lo culture exist on a simultaneous plane. . . Welcome to Episode 7 of To The Studio. This weeks guest is Francesca Blomfield. . . The atmosphere of night creates the condition from which Francesca synthesises drawing, painting and writing. This temporality of night allows for multiplicity of space that has potential for different transgressions, contained rubbing of different varieties; in delirium, in fatigue, physically moving through darkness in new sensory spaces, in the conjuring of what wants to be forgotten or what can only be forgotten led by a desire to extend new possibilities and actions. Transformation enacts descent into the subconscious, into the repressed, concerned with areas of extremity to form a type of psychic self surgery. Francesca generates automated internal subject matter for the paintings and drawings, forming a mutual relationship and feeding each other by means of content and material limitation. In both the paintings and the drawings the language is formed of text/image panoramas. The way Francesca works is concerned with the slowness of painting and drawing whilst never forgetting the urgency inherent to the experience of thoughts and feelings. The paintings render her designs in a baroque and excessive texture that compress the figure and ground of the graphic in a rapid and laboured exchange. The compositions become subverted friezes, expanding horizontally. The process of applying paint in multiple layers both hides and redefines the text/image objects in the paintings. Painting becomes a dissonant activity where there is a continual action of creation and destruction of surface and content. Drawing becomes a place where Francesca reverses the physical build up of paint in the paintings. Drawing reduces the graphic and she can deconstruct the joy and pleasure available to her through the creation of perverse, volumized marks in the paintings. Francesca considers the drawings, which are created from modular parts, to be like musical scores or architectural diagrams. . .
