Send us a textToday's episode is by request from my friend Vix, who asks:"As someone who has been creating their own one-woman show, how do you show your work-in-progress if you've only got one act or partial act? I'm specifically referring to residencies that ask for works to be shown as part of their program (ex. “one night performance open to the public to show WIP,” “two nights of shows that the venue will help promote,” etc.). Do I just put on my 4-5 min aerial piece and then talk everyone to go home? What if I intend to create a much longer show (be it one person or multiple people), but I just haven't gotten that far in the process? I love the idea of a WIP showing but is this what these residencies are really asking for?"Let's talk about it!The "danger" of coming to an artist residency from the context of a gig worker, and how that can derail your experience during the residency by focusing solely on the end-of-residency showingHow does your context influence how you view the opportunity to share a WIP? 5:11How I totally forgot this in real life 7:00IF YOU LISTEN TO NOTHING ELSE IN THIS EPISODE, LISTEN TO THIS 8:40How it COULD get sticky 11:00For further listening about artist residencies, please see Episode 31: Artist Residencies, wth is that? and Episode 37: Artist Residencies for AerialistsDon't go back to sleep.xoRachelSign up here for monthly blasts and functional wooFind me on InstagramSupport this podcast on Patreon
Hannah Bays (b. 1982) is a London based painter who graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in London, 2015.Through painting, Hannah Bays explores psychological terrain associated with the sacred, the profane and the transformational. Familiar objects are used symbolically to convey existential meaning, whilst gesturing towards broader philosophical, social, and global concerns. These objects within the paintings echo the ritualistic potency of ceremonial vessels that hold our deepest desires, memories, and fears. Drawing upon mythological and folkloric references, Bays often anthropomorphises animals and everyday objects, playing with scale to shuffle hierarchical relations. Colour is employed emotively, with line and form expressive of a bold desire - the sensual properties of paint a vehicle for meaning. Recent exhibitions include: I'm Not Afraid of Ghosts, Palazzo Tiepolo Passi in Venice, Italy, Confessions, which was a solo exhibition at Jack's House, London, and ABG Emerging, Alice Black Gallery, London which were all in 2024 as well as Muscle Beach, two-person exhibition with Ana Kazaroff, Kupfer Project, London in 2021 Residencies include the Malevich Residency, Lake Como, 2021; Dover Arts Club Drawing Room Residency, 2020; Eton College Artist in Residence, 2018 and RRU Artist in Residence, Liverpool, also in 2018.

We are joined with Emma Golden, executive director of the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts. The Golden Foundation was conceived as a way to thank the community of artists for their support, encouragement and friendship. For the Golden family and friends, the Golden Foundation is also a means of celebrating the legacy of Sam and Adele.Emma paints a story in this episode that honors that legacy by sharing stories of her grandparents, Sam and Adele Golden and her parents, Mark and Barbara Golden as they all embarked on the founding of Golden Artist Colors. From the rich experience that Sam had as a paintmaker working along his uncle Leonard Bocour producing hand-ground oil colors for artists in 1936, she reveals that in retirement Sam and Adele returned to the arts materials world joined by Emma's parents, Mark and Barbara. That was 1980 and the company Golden Artist Colors now manufactures GOLDEN Artist Acrylics, Williamsburg Artist Oil Colors, QoR Watercolors, and PanPastels and is a respected leader in the paintmaking industry. In 2012, Golden Foundation opened its doors to a one-of-a-kind residency experience to artists around the world. Across the road from the Golden manufacturing factory in New Berlin, New York, a 19th century barn was renovated into spacious studio and living space for artists chosen through an application process. The artists during their four-week residency have multiple opportunities to meet with paintmakers and experienced material application specialists to learn more about the paints they work with. It is a unique experience that is often not taught or is not accessible to artists and advances each artist's expertise in their field. Emma explains the application process and informs our listeners on the logistics and timetable of the process. She also lays out the day to day living arrangements for the artists. Artists with curiosity and a quest for learning are encouraged to apply. The application will become available in June so keep an eye out for the announcement on Goldenfoundation. org. Thank you, Emma, for this inside look into your foundations opportunities for artists. We are looking forward to staying in touch with you and your residents. Have you ever wondered what exactly an artist residency is and whether it might be the missing piece in your creative journey? In this comprehensive guide, Ty Nathan Clark takes you through everything you need to know about these transformative opportunities.Artist residencies aren't just retreats—they're powerful creative accelerators that provide dedicated time, space, and freedom to focus exclusively on your work. From rural sanctuaries nestled in nature to dynamic urban studios, these programs offer artists the chance to step away from daily distractions and immerse themselves in their practice. The benefits extend far beyond a change of scenery. Residencies foster creative growth through uninterrupted studio time, expose you to new perspectives in unfamiliar environments, build valuable professional networks, provide access to specialized equipment and mentorship, and can significantly enhance your artistic credibility. As one resident reflected, "I left with the certainty that I'm an artist with a commitment to the creative life that I've never since questioned."Finding the right residency requires understanding what you need. Do you crave rural peace or urban energy? Are you seeking community or solitude? Can you self-fund, or do you need financial support? From fully-funded career-makers like Skowhegan and MacDowell to self-directed retreats, there's something for every artist at every career stage—you just need to know where to look and how to successfully apply.Ty shares insider tips for crafting winning applications: be specific about your plans, showcase your strongest recent work, explain why this moment and this particular residency are right for you, and always follow application guidelines meticulously. For those who secure a residency, he offers practical advice on preparing materials, absorbing your surroundings before diving into work, and documenting your experience.Whether you're considering your first residency application or looking to elevate your approach, this episode provides the knowledge and inspiration to take this meaningful step in your artistic journey.
