38. New Horizons in Geoscience Communication

Discovery to Recovery

In the evolving world of communication in geology and geoscience,  the importance of dialogue leads the way to deal with some of society's grand challenges. Iain Stewart is at the forefront, helping build effective communication strategies to advance the global geoscience mission. We also explore an example of empathetic, community centred dialogue with Kate Moore.  A two-way conversation is critical to building the mines of the future, supplying the energy transition and supporting a broad range of geology-related societal challenges.  Iain Stewart is the El Hassan bin Talal Research Chair in Sustainability at the Royal Scientific Society (Jordan) and Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth (UK). Iain has spent decades honing his communication skills, including a 15-year partnership with the BBC, but his thinking around communication continues to evolve.  We talked to him about how he arrived at an approach of seeking to understand what people want to know, ultimately summed up by the question ‘how can we help?'.  Importantly, he recently published a paper , Three Horizons for Future Geoscience, that uses the dialogic tool of the three horizons as a framework for thinking about systemic change and what pathways we can use to move away from the ‘business as usual' approach.  The paper evaluates the current state of geoscience, particularly in advanced economies, and poses one narrative that can be used to reimagine the global geoscientific mission.  There aren't easy answers, but there are ways in which we can build dialogue and seek solutions together.  Dialogue and asking the question ‘how can we help you?' was fundamental to Kate Moore's team on the large EU Horizon 2020 project, IMPaCT.  Kathryn Moore, Senior Lecturer in Critical and Green Technology Metals, Cambourne School of Mines, was part of the team that worked with Mineco, a small mining company operating in Bosnia. Success in the project required multidisciplinary dialogue, across all technical disciplines and with the local community.  One of their big challenges was also to create enduring and effective public outreach.  Through both creative thinking and a series of fortuitous and challenging events, the final product was a thoughtful and provocative book entitled ‘Of Earth, For Earth.'   The book was published by the University of Exeter and is available from a variety of sources. Our theme music is Confluence by Eastwinds.

Women of the World's Religions Interview Series from the first-ever Women's Village at the Parliament of the World's Religions Short Interviews Served Up Weekly I was honored to be a part of a special project for the Parliament of the World's Religions Women's Task Force: conducting interviews inside the first-ever Women's Village. The invitation put forth at the Interview Suite was: Let Your Voice be Heard! In total, I interviewed 71 women, and I will share all of them. Each interview packs a powerful dose of inspiration in a few short minutes. I was truly fortunate to sit with women as they spoke so profoundly from their hearts about their love-in-action toward the Parliament's themes of: a call to conscience, the support of the human rights and dignity of women, and the care of the next generations of children (which, of course includes care of our earth).  ••• This episode features Hanna Yaffe.  Hanna Yaffe was born in London to a Rabbinic family. She has lived in Plymouth (UK) and Sunderland, studied in Gateshead, lived in Johannesburg, South Africa during the height of apartheid, an experience which shaped her into a humanist and spiritual activist by the age of 19. She moved to Jerusalem in 1975, where she is deeply involved with arts and culture as a means to Peacework.Hanna has frequently shared forums with Muslim and Christian storyteller, touring around the UK on the "Spirit Of Peace Tour" with Sheik Hassan Manasra and she is the Jerusalem Coordinator of Spirit of Peace UK based charity. She is an active member of Shira Hadasha, a Feminist Orthodox Synagogue. She regularly leads prayers there and for women's groups around the country. She defines herself as an unorthodox orthodox Rabbinic Jew(ess) Hanna has produced three CD's:"Birth in a Time of Bloodshed", a collection of lullabies from around the world written in time of war, exile and slavery."Lullabies from Jerusalem" a collection of folk lullabies sung by artists who belong to different faiths.  The disc was acclaimed by Martha Stewart as "Lullaby CD of the Year 2000"."Return Again" is an anthology of Hassidic stories and melodies. •••This series of interviews gives me a sense of peace and reassurance. The women are activated, and their love cannot be stopped. And I believe that you will find, as I did, that listening to women speak from their fierce hearts, empowers us as women to find our own voices and to take action from our hearts as well. Find your place among these women… You can participate in Brecia's Women's Woven Voices project. Please Subscribe and help me to share these women! With love, Dale YouTubehttps://m.youtube.com/@daleallen-womenoftheworld Podcast https://daleallenpodcast.buzzsprout.com Websiteshttps://www.daleallen.nethttps://www.inourrightminds.net “Woman Shine” song by Dale Allen on all music platformshttps://youtu.be/-nsvL9JjMc4  Hanna Yaffehttps://www.lullabies-of-loss.org/aboutwww.spiritofpeace.co.uk    YouTubehttps://m.youtube.com/@daleallen-womenoftheworld Podcasthttps://daleallenpodcast.buzzsprout.com WSupport the show

This episode with award-winning photographer Jamie House is truly fascinating. Jamie has an incredible practice which melds research, process and diverse disciplines to explore the intersections of art, science and nature through the lens of posthumanism (simply put, the decentralising of humans and accounting for nonhumans). Our conversation goes from an 11-year-old Jamie discovering the joy of experimentation through pinhole photography to his recent creation, GHY-3 an immersive sound installation exploring insect communication and satellites at Goonhilly, Cornwall. There's talk of what inspires Jamie from hidden histories to different realms and new ways of seeing and attentive listening to the world around us. Plus an upcoming book in progress. Jamie is a British Photography Award recipient, and associate lecturer on MA Photography course University of Plymouth UK. In this episode, Iain Stewart, an expert in geoscience and sustainability, highlights the need for the scientific community to communicate differently to engage communities in developing sustainable climate solutions, learning to move away from the 'tell and sell' approach, to one of 'sense and respond' in order to build trust.Iain explains to host, Sue Stockdale about his latest project in northeastern Jordan, where a wetland has dried up due to climate change, and what he has learned in getting the project off the ground in the desert landscape.About Iain StewartIain Stewart is the El Hassan bin Talal Research Chair in Sustainability at the Royal Scientific Society (Jordan) and Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth (UK). The founding director of the University of Plymouth's ‘Sustainable Earth Institute', Iain's long-standing research interests are in disaster risk reduction, climate change, and Earth science communication. His Earth science communication work has built on a 15-year partnership with BBC Science television presenting popular documentary series, such as ‘Earth: The Power of the Planet', ‘Earth: The Climate Wars', ‘How Earth Made Us', ‘How To Grow A Planet', ‘The Rise of the Continents' and ‘Planet Oil'.Iain was also academic advisor on David Attenborough's acclaimed BBC series ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet'. Awarded an MBE for his services to geography and geology education, he was President of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, was the Communications Lead and Evidence Chair for the Scottish Government's Climate Citizen's Assembly, and is the UNESCO Chair for Geoscience and Society.Connect with Iain Stewart on Twitter and find out more at the Royal Scientific Society (Jordan).Key Quotes"Water scarcity is the number one problem here in Jordan. And I think you can't really be a geoscientist working on sustainability here and not have a project on that.""One of the solutions is empowering communities to be able to make their own adaptations.""To be able to cope with the effects of climate change I think adaptability and flexibility will be absolutely the key""Authentic listening, where you're genuinely shutting up, is something that scientists and experts don't do very well.""Some people would argue from a sustainability perspective that we should effectively stop traveling.""The worst people for traveling in terms of flights are academics and the worst academics are climate scientists.""We need to show leadership here. We need to show the motivation, the sense of purpose to be doing this.""One of the unpalatable messages is that the low carbon green energy economy is going to need more stuff. And that stuff is going to have to come from somewhere, and the place it's going to come from is the ground. And therefore, a future with less carbon in it is a future that's going to have a lot more mining in it."Partners and SupportersWe partnered with the Royal Scottish Geographical Society to bring you this series. This is our last episode before a summer break, and we have the last of the three episodes looking at the development of autonomous ships and autonomous vessel systems. We have heard about the commercial projects and the development of international regulations earlier, but not all the technologies on autonomous vessel systems are bound for vessels that need to company with the international regulations that have been written by the International Maritime Organisation. There are many drones, and autonomous systems that have, and still are being developed for research and military space. So in this episode we will look at the startup market, and what is happening to create the link between innovation and commercial reality.I also have the second half of my interview with Brett Phaneuf, the American behind the Mayflower project that will send an IBM powered autonomous ship to resail the route of the original Mayflower, which sailed from Plymouth UK to Plymouth, USA 400 years ago. Now, autonomous systems seem to eb growing in popularity, and certainly have captured the public imagination. So, what do we mean about autonomous technology? Nick Chubb, founder and CEO at the research consultancy Thetius in the UK recently published a report on the autonomous vessel market. So I asked him to explain the potential market and where the growth will come. We also talked which countries are taking the lead in autonomous start-up systems for research and developmentHe talked about the US and Israel, and it is to Israel that we look. The country has an extremely buoyant startup market where backing is available for business to business solutions, and one nexus for shipping and maritime startups in the country is the Dock Innovation Hub, a startup accelerator that has now become a venture capital fund, backing the maritime startups that it bringing into its ecosystem. In June the Dock launched a call to find some autonomous system startups to meet the demands of two of its corporate clients. These two clients are ThyssenKrupp’s marine systems division, and a subsidiary of the same company called Atlas Elektronik. Both are based in Germany. These companies are already well now military and maritime systems developers, with a history in warfare and naval technologies, remote sensing and increasingly automation. Atlas Elektronik has already developed autonomous minesweeping which it now supplies to the British Royal Navy. They have teamed up with the Dock to find new technologies and startups that address a range of challenges. They launched the call in June this year, and hopeful startups have until August to send in applications based on a range of different technology needs that are being sought. This then is a good chance to get a feel for the autonomous systems market, and where the ideas are coming from.I spoke to Nir Gartzman, which is the chief Operating Office at the Dock in Israel to find out how many startups he thinks there are and why large corporates with existing expertise in developing innovative systems would go looking for startups? And the episode ends with the second half of my recent chat with Brett Phaneuf. Brett is in charge of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship Project which has built an autonomous unmanned trimaran style vessel that will use IBM software – algorithms. Artificial intelligence. As well as sensing technologies to sail later this year from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth USA. Yes, the same two ports that the Mayflower vessel sailed between with the mostly Dutch and English pilgrims 400 years earlier. My interview with him went beyond the actual voyage and to what he thinks the voyage will achieve and change things both for science and the technology and use of autonomous systems.
