What makes someone an expert or Master at a skill? In my opinion the only way you can become an expert at a skill is by teaching it. Can you truly consider yourself a master/expert if you are incapable of teaching a class or imparting your knowledge onto someone else? I have come to the conclusion that your skill level and the ability to teach are two different things. It is possible to be really good at something but incapable of effectively teaching someone your skill. In fact I would argue that if you never have taught said skill, you do not truly have a deep understanding and knowledge of the underlying fundamentals. Example: We have Two Salsa Instructors, Both have been taught by the same Master Level Instructor. After 10 years. Dancer A goes on to become a Full time professional Salsa Performer. Dancer B goes on to open a dance school and become a full time instructor. Now we can make the argument that Yes, Dancer A is going to be a more proficient Performance Dancer. But If I were to ask you who is the better overall dancer? Dancer A or Dancer B? Who do you think would be able to have a better dance with a completer beginner? Who do you think has a better understanding of the fundamentals? Who would be the better social dancer overall? Who do you think would be more empathetic and patient with new dancers? If I were given the option of who I would want take a class with, I would say both Dancers Honestly. But I do believe that the Dancer with 10 years' experience will be able to more effectively teach me and correct me on my dancing style. I would love to know what you all think? Who would you rather take a class from The Performer or the Teacher? Who do you think would be the better dancer? Let me know in the comments down below. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.faceb
Why should you spend $ to attend a Dance Congress? Yes, Yes, I know, I can already here some people say. “ But Two Left Feet” I can spend $10/$20 to go to my local dance social on any day of the week, and dance my heart out”. Or “… But Two Left Feet, I can spend $10-$20 and take a dance class locally in my city. Or I can Spend $50 for a private lesson with my local instructor”. All of these are valid reasons, please, just hear me out. Have you ever been to a legit Dance Congress or Festival ??? Have you felt the energy in the air, as you arrive on that Thursday/Friday Night and the anticipation of this weekend is absolutely overwhelming you. Do you remember the last day of school before summer break? Do you remember that feeling of riding the bus home, in anticipation of the summer time? Whether you stayed indoors all summer, or played outside with your friends. Summer Break was the greatest time of the year. And as we get older and become adults, and take on more responsibilities, that sensation of being a Child/Teenager and not having a care in the world is not often replicated / or experienced In my opinion, Dance Congresses are a way of reliving that childhood feeling of anticipation. Side Note – Anticipation is why I believe that Friday Nights are the best day of the week. Just think about. It's Friday and its 5pm, You are driving home from work, and you have a free weekend. No major plans, just you and your free time. Your anticipation for the weekend is what gives you that major adrenaline and serotonin rush. Anything is possible, You can do anything over the next few days. This same feeling is what occurs when you first arrive at a Dance Festival. You are seeing new people, fresh faces, beautiful people, ugly people, weird people. But everyone there, is there for the same reason, We all Love Social Dancing. Humans are social beings with a powerful psychological need to belong. membership and identification with—some group is critically important for our happiness. We have a need for friends, and a romantic relationship. We join social clubs, fraternities, and sororities; participate in community events. People often wear shirts and Hats proclaiming their associations, which makes us feel accepted, valuable, and important. The Need to belong is usually found within families, friendships, membership in associations, and within our community. That is why when you first arrive to the Dance Congress, it's like coming home. You are around your people, You can let your hair down and enjoy it because everyone there is just like you. We all have hopes/dreams/aspirations - we all want to become the best dancers we can be. We all are eager to share our joy and enthusiasm with other like-minded people. There is something about taking a road trip to a foreign city, booking a hotel, and then taking some amazing dance workshops during the day and attending dance socials in the evenings. It is legit one of my favorite things to do, and I implore you, if you have never gone, please please go! #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
Recently I uploaded a video about how Social Dancing is a Second Form of Practice. For anyone who may be a beginner to Partner Dancing this is a very important step to the learning process. Now you may ask yourself Why is that? In the classroom, you are learning in a controlled environment. Both the lead and follow understand what is being taught, and what is expected of each person. This can lead to a false sense of competency and understanding, due to the fact that your partner knows what to expect and what to do. This leads directly into the possibility of back leading or even Leader Expectancy Syndrome – LES for short. Backleading can be defined as the act or the habit of some followers to lead themselves through dance moves the leader has nothing to do with. An Example would be a partner following what the teacher is doing, and NOT following what their dance partner is leading. Leader Expectancy Syndrome can be defined as a leader expecting a follower to understand and anticipate their signals. A key factor in LES is mixed or confusing signals from the Lead. An Example could be a leader failing to properly signal a turn for the follower, and becoming upset. LES is more often experienced during socials, while backleading is more often experienced during Dance class. This leads us back to the original question – How can a Dance Social be a second form of practice? As a leader, when you dance with someone, this is the ultimate test of your leading ability. You can increase the difficulty level by dancing with a complete stranger or You can lower the difficulty by dancing with someone from your dance class. I encourage you to do both. Dancing with a stranger will force you to lead with clear and precise signals. As a leader not having clear signals leads to confusion, which leads to hesitancy, which can lead to doubt, which ultimately can lead to a bad dancing experience. The dance will never exceed the skill level of the lead. Always remember that It is always the leads fault. This mindset will take you far, because you always hold yourself accountable, and you always wonder how can you do something better. For my followers, it is the almost the same. You can increase the difficulty level by dancing with a complete stranger. You can lower the difficulty by dancing with someone from your dance class. As a follower during a social, you will not have the luxury of anticipating what your partner wants to lead, so you truly have to be in the moment and listen/feel for the leaders cues. And if you do find yourself trying to anticipate what the leader is going to do, you will quickly find that this can ultimately kill a dance. As in life, so on the dance floor, you cannot have two leaders. A follower who anticipates or does not follow signals, is not a good follow. A leader who cannot lead clearly and safely, is not a good lead. Social Dancing is trial by fire and one that every dancer will have to overcome. It is also the most fun you will have. Dance Classes are fun, but they limit creativity. Dance Socials are where you can truly open your mind as to what is possible. Especially by witnessing what other dancers are capable of accomplishing. Drawing inspiration and motivation from those around you. The only way you will become a great dancer is by social dancing. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers
How to improve Posture while dancing? You have to constantly be mindful of it until it becomes a habit. So when you're dancing or practicing, keep posture in mind and correct yourself when you notice a slip. Do this over the next few weeks and it should resolve itself. posture practice is about awareness of the different elements of how we organize our bodies while we dance, and then monitoring those doing movement practice. Good movements flow from good posture, and the best time to start learning and practicing good posture is right now - every minute you spend dancing with poor posture is time you spend training yourself to dance with poor posture. Stop looking down, at your feet or your partners feet. Be mindful that where the eyes/head goes the body goes. Keep your head/eyes high. Especially for leads as you need to be cognizant of the surrounding dance floor and those around you. Looking down at your partner's feet: bends the neck, causing a natural bend in the back and hunched over look. It REDUCES space between you and your partner because your head fills the space that should actually be clear Makes you look less confident and ruins the image Teaches the bad habit of focusing on unimportant details (if you've lead it, assume they've done it or watch where their BODY goes, not where their feet go. If you want to improve your posture, start going to the gym. Good posture is a key for body leading, things like sensual bachata. But try not to be stiff, there is a good middle ground. Outside of dance something I always like to keep in mind when walking around, is to think about Superman walking with is cape on. In practice focus on not leaning forward at the waist, aim for leveling hips and minimize pelvic tilt. And shoulders rounded forward affects your balance. A good dance teacher can help you with exercises and drills that will help you take your Dancing to the next level. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
When to do shines? You can break apart for a shine whenever, but paying attention to the music - shows your musicality skills and that's one mark of becoming a better dance Usually a good time to do shines is when the lyrics/vocals stop during the bridge of the song. This can be indicated by particularly interesting instrumentation or solos where you can really hear drums doing something unusual, for example. Sometimes you can shadow your partner and mimic the shine they are doing, or you can do your own thing. A shine is an opportunity for you to show off on the dance floor, Leads or follows. The best part of dancing is when the dancers play off each other. You add your own little flavor into a technique/lead, or a body movement or expression. Your follow does some nice styling, or adds some spice of their own. For my leads: There are some follows that are a bit dangerous to dance with - they turn themselves randomly, they're forcefully offbeat, they hold onto your hand tightly, and many other examples. In these rare instances, you can throw in some extra shines, and just smile for large portions of the song with them. As a final Note / A word of Caution: You must tailor your shines to the level of your partner. Some follows LOVE to shine, so give them more shine time than others. Some follows will look absolutely terrified and just repeat their basic step if you leave them alone for too long. In that case do partnerwork with them instead. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
How do you politely but firmly decline dancing with someone? What's the best way to politely decline when they ask? And if they keep asking after that, how do you make it clear that you're not interested? It is very Simple: Just say: no, thank you. If they ask again say the same and repeat the process until they get tired of asking. If they ask for an explanation just say you don't want to dance with them and that's it. No further explanation necessary. if they are persistent go make small-talk with anyone nearby, or at least stand next to someone else. The person is more likely to be embarrassed and leave if you're with someone else when you repeatedly say no. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
Social dancing with social anxiety. I will say this, in my youth, I would definitely take a shot or two before a class and also before a dance social. And I would also take another shot maybe midway through the night. I would keep a bottle of warm liquor In my trunk at all times. Say/Think what you will. If you dance class has a social after the class, if you are not comfortable with socializing you can just dance. You don't HAVE to socialize if you don't feel up to that. You can keep it simple as "Do you want to Dance?" And "thank you!" after the dance is done. If you hate small talk, dancing gives you a way to socialize without forcing you into conversations with people. You can also talk to people during the classes themselves. Introduce yourself and ask how they are doing, nothing else is necessary. Do that with everyone you dance with, and you will start to become more comfortable with everyone. Your ultimate goal is to build a friendship with your dance classmates. You can make every social event a game: Make it a goal to ask x number of people to dance per night. And at least 1 new person every social. This challenges you to meet a stranger, while also challenging you to dance with somebody new. This is a win/win because you level up your social skills and dancing skills. Also keep in mind, that you are not forced to dance. You can just hang around and watch people dance. Just being in the atmosphere can be a learning environment. You start to pick up on social cues, see new patterns, see whos the experienced dancer's vs beginners. Watch the Dancers who you like and look at their timing and styling you'll be surprised how much you can pick up. Understand that if you are a lead you are expected to ask followers to dance. But that does not mean, followers cannot ask leads. I have never seen a lead tell a follower no. Try to think of it like this, You are not approaching a stranger, you are approaching someone who came to a dance social because they want to dance. That's the whole point. They are there because they want to be asked to dance. Remember you do not have to be Mr. Sauvé or give your life story. Just give simple eye contact and say, would you like to dance? I have been dancing for close to 9-10 years, and I still get anxious nervous asking someone to dance. More so the first time. The first time asking someone to dance that night, is the most nerve wrecking, but after that it becomes easier. When in doubt, ask the teacher to dance, they should always be in a good mood and eager to dance with their students. Also ask the Instructor about other dance events throughout the week. The more you go to dance events, the better you become and the more comfortable you become. Social dancing is a skill like any other. You're going to have to push through the awkward experiences in order to build a proper skill set. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
What can you do as a lead when the follow continues to have super wide steps? don't let her lead, you are the lead if you were the lead at the beginning. if you two are in standard orientation position, then the space between you two should be approximately constant throughout the dance. the only time that space will contract or expand is when one of you take a step/stride that's not the same length as the other. Doing very small steps in regular basic. Doing very small side basic. Using a closed hold in addition to small steps to limit with frame. Using just right hand on the back with small steps and seeing if they notice that they are losing contact because they step out. Leading a cross body that moves a lot and fast (wide steps are impossible). quitting the floor is always an option If my partner is not respecting me, or the floor, or other people on the floor; I quit the floor as quietly and as gracefully as I can for all parties. It's not my job to make up the difference, I'm trying to have a good time too, and I don't have to contribute to a situation that ruins so many people's evening. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
Advice and Tips for Going to a Dance Congress/Festival. Before you even go – look at the schedule of events and circle the workshops you want to do, and figure out where the rooms are. Make sure to bring enough clothes, you'll be sweating a lot. Also, make sure your shoes are up to the task, dance heels might be good for a 2-hour party, but not necessarily for a 3-day weekend festival. So bring maybe 2-3 different dance shoes. If this is your first congress - don't go 100% on the first day, or you may feel burned out by the end of it, Choose your classes wisely, you are not going to have full energy for every single class so if there's a very intense class you want to be able to keep up then consider either taking more relaxed classes prior or skipping a few. Keep in mind that Footwork classes are more intense / more of a workout than partner work classes. Try to be at the front of classes no matter your level. The important thing is to be able to see. Lastly, don't forget to stretch and take some ibuprofen with you because your legs and possibly knees will suffer. If you do get sore, Try to spend lots of time in the hotel hot tub, or bring some Epsom salts or a bath bomb for the bath to give your feet and legs some relief. This is best done right before any nap times. I always bring earplugs and an eye mask just in case your roommates or the neighbors are loud. If you are in a new city and you have free time go out and explore the city. Also, dance with people you don't know, is a great opportunity to meet new people, and experience new leads and follows. Miscellaneous items: mints, water bottle, a few cans of soda water, drinks with electrolytes, a travel-sized perfume, bring snacks, fruits, etc. to sustain your energy level, small towels, hand sanitizer, More clothes than you think you'll need - If you're in the Congress hotel, you can always run up and change or grab something, If you are afraid of oversleeping - Don't rely on your alarm, get the front desk to give you a wakeup call, #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
Difficulty remembering Dance patterns. #socialdancing How can I better remember the moves I learn as a lead in Salsa? This person was having difficulty remembering the more complicated patterns from class. ___________________________________________________ I think we all encounter this at some point as a lead. When you are in dance class learning a new pattern, instead of trying to learn the pattern in a specific order and detail. Your goal should be to understand the building blocks and how they can be connected. I would suggest thinking of it like a math problem. X+Y= Z but we can also say Z-Y=X. What I mean is, find the parts of the pattern you like / or you are able to execute and find ways to put those into what you already know. If the teacher is teaching a hammerlock pattern, think about the patterns you already know, and contemplate where you can throw a hammerlock into it. And if you are dead set on learning a full/complete pattern from beginning to end, here is what you can do. Break the pattern down into blocks/segments. Maybe (2-3) 8 counts. The next time you go out dancing or have a practice partner, memorize that one segment and practice it the whole time. Yes, it's going to be boring and repetitive but by focusing on that one you are going to anchor it in your memory If you practice one new block per week that's a lot of progress. If you can manage that consistently, you will know a lot of blocks in no time. Next up, you should already know this answer – You need to practice more! You want to create some muscle memory where you always have a glimpse of an idea of what you can lead in a certain position. On the subject of being scared to try something new and making mistakes. Do not be so hard on yourself, and stop holding yourself to such high standards. We all make mistakes, your ultimate goal as a leader is to just make sure you do not hurt your partner. Everybody makes mistakes on the dance floor. How you react to them is what matters--you just got to move on and keep dancing and having fun. It's ok to only execute patterns that you are confident in, but it's also ok to try and experiment, and see what works. The key is repetition and understanding of how blocks fit together. Visualization is a great technique that works well for social dancing as well. Watch videos of classes to refresh your memory, and then when you are driving, walking, washing dishes, whatever mindless task - play salsa and imagine doing the sequences in time with the music, try imagining mixing it with other combos you know and adding musicality. Visualize what you are trying to accomplish and the body will remember. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

How much should my hands/arms move when leading? How much arm and hand movement is too much? ______________________________________________________________ If an arm movement supports the body movement, then it can be fine or even recommended. But body movement should come first. You do not want washing machine arms, wax-on wax-off hands. This is a No-No. Arm movement originates from your body movement, As long as you're not 'leading' anything, you can keep relaxed arms, elbows next to your body, just in front of your ribcage, with the forearms horizontally. Your body/shoulders are moving with the music, your arms follow this movement, they shouldn't move too much independently. When you ARE leading something, you might have to stiffen up the frame a bit. Even then, it will largely depend on what you're trying to lead. You should not dance with your arms. It's almost always confusing and It doesn't help. Your Arms are for leading, In a handhold position - if you move them you are asking the follow to do something. If you are moving them around too much it's confusing for the follow. Give the follow some tension in your arms but don't be rigid, have some flexibility. There is a middle ground that you must find. If you can imagine this, your arms are never in one state, they are always in this transitory state between fluid and tense. They are never 100% loose (think noodle arms) or 100% strict and tense. It is best when motion in your upper body is natural, not deliberately added in. The problem with some leads is that they start to perform, to other leads, and forget what they should be doing – Dancing WITH their partner. Or they forget to dance at their dance partner's level. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers
Saying Hurtful Things Today I was informed that I hurt someone's feelings, and It does not make me feel good about myself. In an effort to be funny, I came off as harsh, mean, unsympathetic, emotionless, an idiot, just overall not a kind and good person. And thus I am paying for it now. And so what must I do, I must apologize, and this apology very well may fall upon deaf ears. But I have to do it, this may be more so for myself. Because I am unsure what else I could do to rectify this problem? I honestly do not know, It does not make me feel good about myself. I am not proud of my words nor my actions. Like I said I am now paying for it, because I am not unable to think about too many other things. My thoughts are dominated on how careless I was with my words, and how mean I was. This person actually started crying. WOW, right. I made someone cry, with my words. Shows you how impactful your words can be, and how they can cut like a sword. And all of this was from an attempt at humor. I guess I am not very funny, just a mean spirited person. Hmmmm. A lot to think about. Hurt people , hurt people. I do not want to be mean to people, I do want to make people laugh, but there has to be others ways to accomplish this without coming off so mean and harsh and unkind and unsympathetic. I am better than that. I deserved every bit of that situation today at work. I deserved it 100% Is all of this an attempt to help cover up my own insecurities. I think that might be a hard yes.
Advice for tall leaders Having difficulty spinning shorter partners. He is also having issues with rhythm. He has been dancing for 3 months, so he's still a beginner. Spinning people is less about height and more about technique. Spinning a partner is not about force but rather guiding the spin and allowing your follow to complete the turn using her own energy. If you ever find yourself forcing a move rather than it being a smooth transfer of energy, focus on using the least amount of movement and force to communicate what you intend to lead. This is not a problem unique to tall leads, its unique to beginner leads. For turning her, you go just over her head at the highest. Think about making a halo above your partners head. You may be under the mindset that because you are tall, that makes you a bad dancer. This is COMPLETELY FALSe. You just need to practice more. Do not look at your height as an excuse, but instead look at it as your unique factor. Certain Things you can do, I will not be able to do as a 5'7 dancer. 0 #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
Sweaty Palms This individual stated when they get nervous/anxious, their palms tend to sweat a lot. And they were looking for advice. _______________________________ I've seen people with a handtowel or handkerchief hanging out of their back pocket. A lot of moves you lead with the tips of your fingers, so your palms are not always involved. So As a lead you can pretty much avoid touching anything with your palm, unless your fingers also get sweaty, you can probably manage with advice from your teacher. There are also some products that you can use to help with sweating. Ill leave the links in the description below. But please, do your own research. https://www.rhinoskinsolutions.com/store/p5/Dry_Skin_Antiperspirant.html https://www.amazon.com/antihydral/s?k=antihydral&pldnSite=1&sa-no-redirect=1
Musicality / Creativity – How Does one become creative on the dance floor. I think creativity comes from your comfort level. It is very hard to be creative when you are in a state of tension/anxiety/nervous. So how does one become comfortable on the dance floor? Extended and prolonged exposure to dancing and social dancing/ dancing with partners. I would argue that you will never see a beginner dancer do something creative on the dance floor. Why is that? Because they are still learning the rules. When a baby draws you a picture is it creative or is it just scribbles on a piece of paper? Better question is it an inspiring level of creativity? Do you feel inspired when you see a baby draw? No. But when you see a professional do something on a whim, just instantly creative something beautiful. That is creativity and this is inspiring. How does Musicality play into creativity. Same way, it's hard for beginners to display musicality. Why? Because they are so focused on executing the proper rules (Timing/leading-following/connection). #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers
Eye contact and smiling? They want learn how to maintain eye contact and smiling during dancing. Are you a leader or a follower? It makes a bit of a difference: a leader should look around a bit to keep an overview of available space around, so they don't bump their follower into other couples, or maybe save their follower from another inattentive dancer. A follower can look around to accentuate their movements and styling. When you're in an open position you can definitely look at your partner, give 'em a smile. The best moment for a smile is when you or they mess something up. I would refrain from constant eye contact, it can come off weird. If you are nervous about looking into someones eyes, you can look at their nose, forehead, ears, in between their eyes. It gives off the same impression. Just do what it feels right. Vibe w the person you're dancing with in a way that feels natural and comfortable to you. That's the biggest takeaway, just be natural about this, Like having a conversation with a stranger. You are not holding complete eye contact for the entire conversation. Please do not think too hard about this. It is not that big of an issue. But I will say if the dance is shit, you are in no obligation to smile. If the leader is being inappropriate, or the follow just awkward, you are in no obligation to look at no one's eyes. try an exercise, record a dance with you not making eye contact, and one with you making eye contact. See which one looks better! To close out this video: For both the eye contact and the smiling, I'd say do what feels natural and think of how it'll help your partner understand that you're having a good time. Empathy will take you a long way. eye contact and smiling are good manners and improve the connection/communication. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
How to ask for feedback from fellow dancers? This individual wants to ask for feedback, but feels too awkward after the dance to ask. I think asking right after one dance would put someone on the spot. It can be tricky to come up with helpful advice so quickly. I would recommend asking someone after a few dances with them. You can say something like “Hey that was fun! I'm trying to get better; do you have any feedback for me?” Or "Hey, I'm looking to improve. Do you have any constructive feedback for me about how I dance? Don't worry I won't be offended by anything you say. I'll just use it to improve for next time" Of if you want an opinion on something specific ask about that, “How was my Tension/frame/styling?” I would put value of opinion in this order. 1st: My Instructor / Teacher. They should be the ones who are guiding you on your path. 2nd: I would video record myself dancing, and value what my eyes deem good vs. bad. 3rd: The opinion/feedback from others. ESPECIALLY in the beginner stage. Asking another beginner what they think can have its merits, but it's like asking a baby what they think about politics. It doesn't know enough to give you a valid opinion. Now if the dancer is proficient and you actually value their opinion, then definitely ask. But I would take feedback from beginners with a grain of salt / skepticism. I think it's best to ask feedback in the class setting. If after the class there may be 15 mins of social dancing time. Like I said earlier get someone to record you, and then you can analyze what you see. Mistakes are glaring in video. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

Should you dance with an Injury? This person sprained their ankle but does not want to wait few weeks for the injury to heal. I am of the mindset that you should not. I understand not dancing for a few weeks is rough! But not dancing for longer because you keep on hurting yourself is even worse! You could possible make the injury worse. If you do not give the injury time to heal, it will heal badly and you'll be massively at risk of developing long term problems. If the injury is serious enough go see a medical professional. Rest the injured area, and after the swelling subsides - you can do some light exercises with resistance bands. Make sure you ice, a heat pad and elevate to reduce inflammation. (cold reduces swelling and pain, heat aids recovery). If you must practice, try and work out the areas that are not injured. If you injured your ankle, sit down and practice your upper body isolations. If you injured your upper body, work on your basic step. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

Followers - Finding it difficult to execute lady's styling while dancing with a partner. This Follower who has been taking ladies styling both in-person and online is able to execute ladies styling solo. However, whenever she dances with a partner she finds it very challenging to incorporate the steps she's learning in the lady's styling courses Thoughts? / Help? The majority of styling classes will only teach you solo styling. And while some of that can be incorporated into partner work, don't expect heaps of wiggle room. When dancing with a leader you're pretty stuck to what they want to do first, and styling comes second. Lady's styling can be completely inhibited by the leader. Lady's styling is somewhat dependent on the leader's skill level. If the leader gives you the freedom to move, perfect. If the leader has a vice grip on your hands? Not perfect. In salsa there are more 'solo' parts where leaders and followers break apart and start doing shines, in bachata/Kizomba/B-Zouk, to my experience, this is extremely rare. So, where DO you use it? More when dancing with experienced leaders, since they won't mind when you take 4-8 counts longer to grab their hand when they present it. When the leader frees up one arm because he's doing a turn or somebody movement for himself, you can swing away, or do some footwork for a few counts. On that rare occasion where the leader DOES give you more space and invites you to go wild on a solo part. So just keep in mind, styling classes are most useful to learn to use your body and the energy you'll get in partner work, but will very rarely be used as actual complete combinations to use on the dance floor. I believe that it's a lot easier to incorporate hand styling than foot styling. Both are largely dependent on leads BUT I do believe it's easier to style with hands. I would practice one kind of styling at a time until it becomes second nature and then introduce something else / learn a new styling technique. I would also like to throw in that, Styling is something to be added in small touches where it's needed and where it works. I am not trying to limit the follows, but I believe that styling is of the nature where “Less is More”. Styling is something that's done where it's musically relevant, there's space, and when it doesn't take any effort to do. Try to find a lead that's willing to let you experiment or one that wants to experiment with you. If you can find a good dance partner, they can give you tips on what feels natural and what doesn't. I find a lot of styling can be obtrusive to the flow of dance if not timed correctly. Of course, paying attention to your lead is number 1 priority but working on styling can make it look even more fresh. Try to work on quick styling techniques that aren't too fancy and try to incorporate in different basic moves like a right turn or left turn. Eventually, it will become muscle memory. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

Some ways to recover after a night of dancing? Muscles are still sore days after This individual went to a festival and danced for 3 days straight, and is now sore from all the dancing. They wanted to know what can they do before and after to help minimize the soreness? In the exercise and weightlifting community, we call this DOMS. Delayed onset muscle soreness. It means you're pushing yourself and getting stronger! The best thing to do is to eat well, rest, and continue training. DOMS should stop occurring as your body gets used to the level of work. So stay hydrated, massage the sore areas, and stay active. Spending a couple of hours a couple of times a week social dancing shouldn't be too much for your body to get used to. Try drinking water before, during, and after dancing. You might be sweating your hydration away. You could also bring electrolyte water or Gatorade to drink throughout the night. One of the best things you can do is light exercise the day after. Legs are easy because you can just go for a walk. For arms and shoulders, you can do some stretching and simple calisthenics. Stretching will increase your blood flow, decrease soreness, and actually increase your flexibility and range of motion over time. After a couple of weeks, your body should get used to the dancing Go walking on a daily basis and if possible implement a weekly weight training program. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

Insecurities on the Dance Floor? I am not good enough I will never be as good as X person How to deal with your insecurities? 1.Why I made this video? TO discuss Insecurities This is something we all deal with in all facets of our lives. I will tailor this to the dancing scene. 2. I have often found myself thinking: I am not good enough I will never be as good as X person 3. How I would aim to resolve these issues: Ask yourself what is In your control? What do you have power over? Your Actions. Also understand that comparison is the thief of joy. I would also like to say that, your insecurities are something you will always deal with. But as you become more confident and as you put the time and effort into your craft, you build up this level of trust & confidence within yourself. And I also think you start to build this sense of abudance mentality versus scarcity. For me I had this sense of scarcity mindset, thinking The more you do this, the better you become, and the more positive experiences you can draw upon. As a beginner, you may not have as many positive experiences to remember and think about. But after you reach a certain level of skill you can understand that and comprehend that just because this one person may not enjoy dancing with you does not mean someone else wont. You have experienced it firsthand. To sum this video up: YOU will always deal with your insecurities. I deal with them now on the dance floor. But as with anything in life, the better you become at this skill the more confidence you have in yourself. The more trust you have in your capabilities. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Rueda #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #Ginga #Forro #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
What do followers look for in a good lead ? As a leader it is your job to protect the follow. People on the sideline see everything, so you want to be more protective in a crowded dance floor. When people see that you are safe to dance with, you get more dances. I do believe that when surveying a dance floor people can recognize with someone is smiling politely, vs. actually and truly having an amazing time. A genuine smile vs a fake smile. If a lead can make a follower truly smile and have fun, then hes probably a good lead. Understand that as a lead when you are dancing you are visually showing everyone your dance resume. People on the sidelines are watching: your moves - are you leading an advanced move at the intro with a new dancer, or are you paying attention to musicality and trying out basic moves first to test the connection and her skill level? Are you leading three double spins in a row? Does the follower look like she's anticipating and/or backleading? If so, how is the lead handling that? Is the lead paying attention to space? How's his frame? Is the follower compensating for a lack of frame by grabbing him? Understand this: Followers DO talk about leads. A LOT. They talk about us in the bathroom, in group chats with their other follow friends, as well with their leader friends. they swoon over amazingly smooth and fun new dancers at a social and offer eager recommendations. And they also warn their friends of the leaders to avoid. Followers also understand that sometimes two of them can have different levels of success with the same leader. However, generally, a great lead gives clear, not jerky signals, and leaves very little open to confusion. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #Socialdance #Socialdancing #Partnerdance #Partnerdancing #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast
I am Conscious to go social dancing due to being overweight This person was conscious because they believe that only the skinny and good looking followers get asked to dance. Being Overweight, does not mean you cannot be a good dancer. I know plenty of plus sized dancers who are absolutely fabulous on the dance floor. I also know plenty of in shape people who are terrible dancers. Your weight should not hinder your desire to learn if you are feeling insecure that also brings your energy down and makes you retreat into yourself so you end up not enjoying the dance as much and perhaps giving off nervous and uncomfortable energy. Giving off that energy can make people hesitant to approach you and ask you to dance. And this can turn into a vicious feedback loop. The good news, perhaps, is that it's something you can change over time. The key is being a fun partner, and that has nothing to do with your weight and more to do with your attitude. It is all about attitude. It does not matter how hot/fit/pretty you are, if you have a shit attitude you are not going to get asked to dance often and you will definitely not get a second dance with anyone. When on the dancing scene. Look like you are having fun. Smile. Nothing worse than dancing with a partner who looks like they hate dancing. People will much more enjoy dancing with others who show they enjoy the dance and themselves. Also, when you do go to socials.....don't sit in the furthest corner. Stand/ sit in an area where you will be seen! For the Follows - Ask the guys for a dance. I have never seen a guy reject a dance offer from a woman, no matter the looks. Something I've noticed is that if you are new to a location. The more you show up, the more people become comfortable seeing you, and asking you to dance more often. People would rather dance with people they know are good dancers, so they don't bother with people they're not familiar with. Start taking group classes where partners rotate. It's a good way to get to know other people. People will want to go to social dances as well and will look for other's to join. That way you won't be alone at a social and it'll be easier to get asked to dance by leads of your group. If your physical appearance and health is important to you, you definitely should continue dancing as much as possible. Not only is it a great workout but it releases so many good chemicals in your brain! You'll end up feeling better inside and out. If you are anxious about talking to people, relax. You don't have to. People are there to dance, not talk. Just smile and nod, ask the usual “how are you what's your name” questions, and relax and enjoy the dance. From a leads perspective - I'd much rather dance with someone who is enjoying themselves and knows how to dance than someone who is gorgeous but not a good dancer or in a sour mood. If you are just a little heavy/overweight - I wouldn't worry much about it but past some point your weight will unfortunately limit your dancing in several ways. Some patterns like hammer lock become problematic. This is not a criticism of heavier people, it's just physics. This doesn't keep me from dancing with them but it requires me adjusting my dancing style and patterns. In my last dance scene in New Orleans, there are girls (and guys) who are overweight and are definitely considered to be excellent and sought-after dancers. So if your sole reason to stop dancing is because you think you first need to lose weight, then I don't think that you should. Continue improving your dancing! Side Note: Also learn to switch roles. Leads that learn to follow are better leads. Follows that learn to lead are better follows. Being a more rounded dancer ensures you will always have someone who would enjoy a dance with you.
