Blien joins us all the way from Kentucky and shares the beautiful story of how she formed a sisterhood with Zu over the years starting with Twitter. Billy shared in Zu's ambitious personality pursuing her degree in Computer Science while working, and advocating for Tigray. She has an absolutely beautiful and kind spirit in the way she cares for others, and constantly promotes positivity. Introducing our brother Heiyab to the platform this week, of course from TPN Tri-State, and as one of Zu's co-chairs. Heiyab has so beautifully shown up as a leader in his respective communities and is giving an example to all those that fall under him to lead with true compassion and integrity. Absolutely loved getting to know more about the journey to his becoming this great guy with the support of a loving family, and translating that into a career in consulting where he gets to help people grow further. There is no surprise that Zuher recommended him for the show, and I'm honored to bring this light to our larger Uprooted family. This week marks the end of one season and a transition into the next. As we reflected on how we spent our time last week in our Create Your Joy course, I noticed more anxiety and tension in my energy. I found myself needing to do a lot of deep breathing as I deal with the push and pull of the old me fighting the new me. We are hard-wired as humans to avoid too much change for our safety. So we can expect a level of resistance and need to have our toolkits stacked with love and support through the transition. For me, it's remembering my loved ones and filling my time with good books, music, food, and laughs. Anytime I start to get overwhelmed I remember I'm not alone and to reach out my hand for the love I need and count my breaths to remember who I am. For years I've battled putting together the scars of all the violence I witnessed and that my people are still enduring. It's been a lifetime of healing that, and facing the pain has not been easy. If this year has taught me nothing else it has taught me I am not in control of anything but myself. The quicker I accepted that the much easier the coping became and the better I felt. This month I wanted to highlight that the key to life is not to avoid every bad thing or feeling you have but instead learn to acknowledge it and move through it. We can't control everything around us but we can choose how we react. We can choose to have hope, to be kind, to speak up, and to care. That feeds an inner peace that nobody can take from you. Learning is a somewhat difficult process on its own but let alone during a global pandemic and #genocide. Today I talk to Sammy about navigating the world of academia through it all. Sammy is a first-time professor after completing his master's this past May 2021. He's experienced what it's been like as a student dealing with this stress and now as a professor so it is an interesting shift in perspective to share. He dropped some gems on the power of holding onto hope and asking for what you need. I love the way Sammy always shows up wanting to learn and be so positive and light in the spaces he occupies. I know we through this word 'triggered' around a lot nowadays, especially after Jhene made it popular again. Unfortunately, it still seems like there are misconceptions around what a trigger is, and how we go about managing them. Some people will try to completely eliminate them but in reality, there is no way we can go through life never being triggered internally or externally. In this episode, I am rejoined by my haftey (sister) Jerusalem! You've seen her on a previous episode, 'Women of the Movement', and she has continued her advocacy efforts for #Tigray through as CCO, chief communications officer, with Omna Tigray. Jerusalem shared her story of using her marketing background to carve out her lane of advocacy using educated awareness. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this episode kicks off a month-long series of conversations to unpack what DV is. Domestic Violence impacts 1 and 4 women, and 1 and 9 men in this country. If we ever want that to change we need to start discussing this as the crisis that it is and change future outcomes. Most people think of it in terms of romantic relationships but DV can happen in all intimate forms of relationships and they aren't always physical. October brings a lot of grief for me personally as it is Domestic Violence Awareness month, on top of losing loved ones the past week. In order to not let the pain of grief cloud our manifestations, I thought it best for us all to learn how to face it and create a path from 'Surviving to Thriving' this month. Starting with the first step of Facing our Grief. We can't heal what we don't face, so today I wanted to share the grief that I've been struggling with to be an example for those going through this now. Hint, we're in a pandemic and everyone is grieving some sort of loss. This week I wanted to share what grief can feel like, and the different ways it showed up in the passing of my grandmother, cousin, and aunt. They all passed in different ways, and each time the grief manifested differently. Perhaps the hardest part of it all is accepting that our new realities no longer look the same. It's hard to grieve the futures we thought we'd have especially when it changes in unexpected ways. This is a special episode to the Black Men in my life. An open letter, and declaration to you all that I'm committed to our collective healing and building the love again. Dear Black Man When did you realize you fell in love with me? When did you decide to stop? What hurt you so much that you don't want to be in love? That you run away with your heart? Why won't you let the tears fall? Who taught you to hide from it all? What about me scares you the most? How long will you let this go on? I wish you could see yourself like I do. Maybe then you'd know what's true And what lies you've been holding onto. You are a beautiful black man Don't believe the false narratives in your head. Or your goals will become old dreams you never lived. and in case you need to hear it again, "I love you and I'm proud of you." Dear Black Man, My heart is often conflicted but the one place it is resolute on is loving you. I think I've always thought it is revolutionary to love you because the world would have convinced us otherwise. My experiences have been filled with such dark lows and high peaks with you. I want nothing more than to love you and yet I find myself armoring up around you, and I know what that does to you. It makes you feel like the bad guy the world is trying to convince you that you are. I promise you that I don't feel that way about you, at least I don't want to. This month I am going on my toughest battle of grieving and releasing the pain of my past. This month is domestic violence awareness month and I've lost two beautiful sisters in my life to this. I know if I'm ever going to have a chance at really loving you the way you deserve I need to heal this wound. I'm doing this publicly with all of you so that we can become better and do this work to heal ourselves and our communities. We've been trapped in these cycles of grief and pain that we've been taking out on one another. Generations of ancestors were robbed of their innocence, and joy at every turn, and those traits were passed down. Patterns repeated and the cycle of harm passed again. But I want to be the change if you want to be with me. I want to do the work to make sure you feel seen, and free to be all of you. Life has required us to be hard and I believe we can radically change when we start with self-love, so I'll hold the light while I carve us a path back to one another. I love you black man. I know that you see me and think she's a superwoman. Look at how strong our mothers are, and how the women have the backbone. Well, I for one want to say that all superhero take their caps off, and I want to take mine off for you. Sometimes you tell me that I'm intimidating or that you don't have the capacity. Sometimes I can feel you waiting for criticism and that hurts me. You've learned to prepare for harsh words from women, and I've learned that men are capable of hurting me and so I armor up. Meanwhile, all of us just want to be loved and give love. So this is my declaration to you, I will heal and make more space for you. I'm going to keep fighting for my peace so that I can make a place for you to rest too. No matter how hard this is I will break this curse for us. I love you black man.
