In this thought-provoking episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we delve into the powerful narratives and innovative soundscapes of Mos Def's debut solo album, "Black on Both Sides," released in 1999. A cornerstone of hip-hop, this album not only solidified Mos Def's place as a lyrical virtuoso but also as a visionary artist deeply engaged with social, political, and cultural themes. "Black on Both Sides" is revered for its lyrical depth, musical diversity, and Mos Def's ability to seamlessly blend jazz, soul, and funk elements with hip-hop. Standout tracks like "Mathematics," a masterful commentary on societal issues underscored by DJ Premier's precise production, and "Ms. Fat Booty," which showcases Mos Def's storytelling prowess over an infectious beat, are testaments to the album's enduring appeal. Other highlights include "Umi Says," an anthem of self-expression and hope, which resonates as much today as it did at the time of its release. Throughout this episode, we dissect the significance of these songs and the album's impact on the hip-hop genre and beyond. We reflect on the era of its release, a time when hip-hop was navigating its identity amidst commercial pressures and the search for artistic authenticity. Mos Def's "Black on Both Sides" stands as a beacon of integrity, pushing the boundaries of what rap music could be. Join us on Dem Vinyl Boyz as we celebrate the legacy of "Black on Both Sides," exploring its themes, dissecting its complex lyrics, and reveling in the genius of Mos Def. This episode is a tribute to an album that continues to inspire and challenge listeners, reminding us of the power of music to provoke thought and drive change.

Black On Both Sides Episode #143 Kunta took a visit of the new Tupac museum in LA.From what he is saying this is a definite place to visit if you ever make it to LA. Contrary to most people's belief, I am a Tupac fan when it comes to culture and impact. Just imagine what Pac had in store for us had he survived his twenties. Sadly, you have to exit through the gift shop. Leave your wallet in the car. RICO comes to visit a new gang of Atlanta rappers. Everyone knows, you don't beat the RICO. A draft was leaked stating that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade. States will get the right to choose how they handle abortions. Kunta feels like this is already sewn up. I believe that we should support our justices or burn the whole thing down. If there is no objectivity left in the halls...The halls must go! How often does the Supreme Court overturn a decision??? Black On Both Sides Episode #142 I am fresh off of a Jamaican vacation. Kunta's favorite getaway is Jamaica, but I didn't get the same vibes. On this trip I had an epiphany of all inclusive resorts. Kunta spent the weekend inebriate adjacent and still managed to pull off a headache. He defeated this with his Sunday brunch of items that would normally contribute to a heart attack all on their own being grouped together in a Frankenstein' Burger. Justice Brown was accepted and is most likely the most qualified justice of all time. This didn't sway the Republicans from not supporting her. One after one they spoke of her greatness and qualifications just before they mentioned that they would not be supporting her. Black On Both Sides Episode #141 Who goes to Golden Corral? I know someone. It may or may not be the other half of this show. At least they aren't in a burger beef like Arby's is. For that matter, who goes to Arby's Yuck and Yuck. The NCAA doesn't care about naturally born women as evidenced by them crowning a swimming champion 1st place in a recent swim meet. This person was born a man and placed in the low 400s. Then transitioned to a woman and is smashing records. Please tell me you don't agree with this? What about my daughter? What about your daughters? The Ukrainian invasion barrels on and now a few Russian generals have been killed. This did not slow the attacks and the atrocities continue. So Joe goes on record as saying that Putin has to go. Wait, what? Can you say that publicly about a super power president and not reap any consequences? Joe clearly doesn't speak for us all. Black On Both Sides Episode #138 Kunta has done the unthinkable. He has put down his breaded chicken favorite for the plant based Beyond Chicken. Not really because who in the world that would eat a fried meat would care that it is meat? No one. My advice is that you have to enjoy some things in life and chicken should be one of them. I almost forgot it was Black History Month. and we need to celebrate by shouting out someone who starred in one of the greatest black movies of all time...The Color Purple. Whoopi got no support from her people when she made a statement that the powers that be deemed inappropriate. Which is it? Believe all women or I'm rooting for everybody black? Neither I guess. Is her career over? Finally there is talk in the NFL of games being thrown to the price of 100k per game. Black On Both Sides Episode #137 Kunta needed a "Me" day and decided to take it on the southwest side of LA. Compton, Crenshaw, Little Ethiopia, etc. The Marathon Store was looking more like a swap meet, so he decided to get some soul food. Nothing like some Turkey and Mac 'n' Cheese to reset the soul. Kunta is well on his way to being a better version of himself. You can even hear it in his voice. His self help books and new wake-up regimen has show results. Kunta wants to let the world know. I, on the other hand, do not subscribe to letting the gurus in to my brain to assist in my "Self" improvement. Self-help is for nothing if you don't come prepared to finish the race. Black On Both Sides Episode #135 Thanksgiving has passed and Kunta went to someone else's house for the event. Where was the mac n cheese? I also went to an in-law's house and Kunta is offended for them that I didn't eat. I do not eat at other people's houses. Please don't be offended. And please do still invite me. I want to be there and break bread with you and your family. However, I don't want to eat the bread. Kunta reports back on his 5 am Club findings. Is this arbitrary number really responsible for the titans of business? Can you force yourself to get up at 5 am everyday? Kyle Rittnehouse getting off with no charges had Black America on edge that the Arbery trial was not going to go the way of justice. Much to everyone's surprise the defendants were convicted on all counts. The country takes a loud and intentional exhale. Whether or not you are part of the crypto gang doesn't mean that crypto isn't happening all around you. If you have not invested a penny into crypto, you aren't alone. Black On Both Sides Episode #134 Kunta takes his opportunity to drag me over the Cowboys v Falcons matchup. True fans do not bail on their team when they are in the dumps. Atlanta fans have gotten used to the inconsistencies of our teams. So there will be no bailing. But let's all think back to when "Them Boys" were not so good and Kunta didn't even want to say their names on this podcast. Kunta is on a journey to find daily balance. He plans to wake up early and sort his day before most of us are even considering hitting snooze. How do you feel about all of the VIPs of the world having a strict up at 5 am method to life? Is this what is necessary to become highly successful? Two trials are currently in session. The Arbury murder trial and the Rittnehouse trial. I believe these are both open and shut cases and it shouldn't require much to end them. Kunta disagrees. I have been missing all of the coverage due to tuning out most of the news, but it seems as though we are going to need to address this on a future show. I can't remember a time when two high level trials were going on at the same time. Black On Both Sides Episode #133 This week's episode was short by BOBS standards. When you hear the Milwaukee Bucks, do you think of Big Black Bucks? Kunta does. In fact, he agrees that the recent World Champion Atlanta Braves are wrongfully using a derogatory word as their team name. The SJWs have successfully convinced The Washington Football Team to have no name at all. Hopefully this country will soon atone for its sins and we can move on to a happy cohesive healthy get-along community. Do we care that Will Smith is playing Venus and Serena's dad in a movie? Black On Both Sides Episode #132 How many of you know Superman's motto? I certainly don't. But leave it to our resident comic book junkie to tell us that Life, Justice, and America...or something like that is the motto. Well, all of that is changing. Why? Because we have convinced ourselves that America is evil. We need to exorcise our demons and beg for forgiveness. You see it as a simple modification to a comic book motto. I see it as the end of the fabric upon which we stand. Maybe Condi Rice can push back the hoard with some white apologist talk. Black On Both Sides Episode #130 Kunta learns of a man that has his nether channels mixed up. Pee comes out the back and poop comes out the front. If you are as confused as I am, you are at least in a company of two. Apparently, a fistula between his rectum and his penis causes the juices to flow from wherever they choose. Lil Nas X wants back in the closet and I knew it would happen. I can't blame him considering he is arguably the biggest rapper of current time. Kunta admits that his kids love Lil Nas and that he knows and supports Billy Ray's lyrics on Old Town Road. R Kelly is going to be behind bars for a long time. We both agree that it is about time. However, there are detractors and Bill Cosby is one of them. Kunta wants to give Ja Rule his flowers and apologize for the way he was ousted from the culture. We compare his hits to 50 cent's hits. Can you guess who has more? Kunta goes on a rant about why he supported the new Marvel movie. I will probably not see it, but Kunta recommends if only to show that Asian stereotypes are very far from how Asian people really are. Kunta's old pastor succumbed to Covid recently. RIP. The issue he has is that his pastor was not vaccinated nor masked. This is normal as there are many people who do not trust the vaccination for Covid. The issue here is that his pastor most likely didn't get the vaccine for fear of microchips. No matter where you line up when it comes to the Covid vaccine, fearing a microchip puts you on the fringe of it all. Black On Both Sides Episode #129 Both Kanye's and Drake's albums have been released. I am assuming you have had time to get through them. I didn't. actually. I listened to Donda, but CLB only got half a listen. Which album is AOY? Or do either of them qualify? We all know K.Dot is gearing up for a release. Do either of them stand a chance? Kunta finally comes to the realization that the legend of Aaliyah is mostly just a legend. I do not say that lightly, but I do say it in jest. You would have to be a member of the old Slack room to fully understand. We battled more than once about how important her voice was to R&B. Either way, he revisited some of the recently re-released albums and has a new take. Neon Deion is bringing attention to HBCUs by being head coach of Jackson State. We look forward to seeing his rise as a coach. If nothing else, we appreciate his commitment to attempting to put HBCU sports on the map. Black Lives Matter is a distant echo in the halls of last summer. Finally some form of justice begins for a couple of the victims of brutality on black people. Black On Both Sides Episode #126 Lebron has made it to millionaire status and we want to congratulate him on his past and future success. How about that high school player that is about to get an endorsement deal before he even plays a down of college football? Is there no limit to booster and agent BS? By 1999 Mos Def had already made a name for himself as a freestyle wizard in New York, a gifted MC that held crowds captive with Lyricist Lounge, and as one half of Black Star. Still he crafted a solo debut that seemed to ignore the hype yet managed to blow us away with its genre bending optimism at a time when hip hop was losing its golden luster. Black On Both Sides delivered a love letter to Blackness that is just as excellent and relevant 20 years later.

Well unless you consider a Bizzy pulling out a rifle reminiscnet of Maw and Paw. In other Kunta news, Gucci Mane Lemonade turns 10 today and Kunta can't hold back his excitement. Clone or no clone, Kunta is a fan. Trump is retracting his ownership of the wall debacle. Now he is blaming the Dems for the shutdown of the government. Honestly, what is 5 billion dollars to this country? We spend so much money on other things. I blame the Dems as much as I blame him. Even beyond that Kunta exposes Trump for lying to the forward deployed military about their 10% raise which ended up being 2%. I actually agree with this. The last thing we want is those troops out there to know the truth and pack it up. Happy New Year!

Please forgive our audio this week. I wasn’t able to record and KingKunta saved us by recording on his own. KingKunta has had enough of the “woke” crowd. Consistency has always been an issue when it comes to this agenda. This is a classic case of killing the messenger. But this messenger is delivering the right news. How then can we pretend we are “woke” if we don’t have eyes that can see that?

I miss the old Kanye, I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye The always rude Kanye I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye I even had the pink polo, I thought I was Kanye KingKunta and B-Honest break apart the Kanye debacle on the first ever Black On Both Sides show. Sure you have heard us type-argue in the Slack Room. But now you get to hear it all unfold before your ears. No matter which one of us you agree or disagree with, we are still black on both sides. And yes…We know that someone’s imaginary balls are itching.
