Face aux meilleurs de la planète, quel rôle peuvent espérer jouer les coureurs et coureuses du continent ? De notre envoyé spécial à Kigali,Le classement final du 17ᵉ Tour du Rwanda laisse apparaître de belles promesses : 3 coureurs africains dans le top 10, un jeune Rwandais, Vainqueur Masengesho, est arrivé en 7ᵉ position. Mais aux Mondiaux, avec des Pogacar ou Vingegaard annoncés, la concurrence sera bien plus relevée. De plus, le parcours pourrait être un « mini Paris-Roubaix à l'africaine », selon David Louvet, l'entraîneur de l'équipe du Rwanda depuis 2023.Paris-Roubaix donc pour les pavés, la distance, 270 km, à cela s'ajoute l'altitude et de nombreuses ascensions. Un cocktail qui fait de ces Mondiaux les plus durs, peut-être, de l'Histoire. « Avoir un Africain à l'arrivée, c'est sûr que ça va être compliqué, juge David Louvet. Au niveau du classement, moi, je pense qu'on peut reprendre celui de l'année dernière et on aura les mêmes coureurs à l'arrivée. » C'est-à-dire Tadej Pogacar, loin devant et pas grand monde à l'arrivée.À Zurich, où s'est disputée la dernière édition, le parcours très vallonné avait eu raison des sprinteurs. Même Biniam Girmay, maillot vert du dernier Tour de France, avait jeté l'éponge en cours de route. Alors que fera l'Érythréen cette année ? Peut-il lui, le grand coureur que l'Afrique attendait, zapper les premiers Mondiaux sur le continent ? Tout est possible, disait-il à notre micro fin janvier. Aujourd'hui, l'hypothèse impasse semble la plus avancée. « On a discuté ensemble, la Fédération, le ministère des Sports et Biniam, explique Samson Solomon, sélectionneur de l'Érythrée. J'aimerais qu'il soit au départ de ces Mondiaux, le gouvernement, le peuple, tout le monde aimerait !  Mais c'est son choix. Cette course n'est pas adaptée à son profil, il n'a pas très envie de prendre le départ pour le principe, sans pouvoir terminer. Maintenant, au niveau des jeunes, surtout au niveau des dames, il y a encore des possibilités. Donc le message que moi, je vais lancer à votre micro, c'est de faire en sorte que les fédérations africaines fassent en sorte qu'il y ait beaucoup de dames qui viennent à ces Mondiaux-là. Ce sont nos Mondiaux. Ce n'est pas une affaire du Rwanda, c'est une affaire de toute l'Afrique. Il faut que l'Afrique soit présente. »Le président de la CAC dit espérer au moins 40 Fédérations africaines en septembre pour des chances de médaille minimes. De Tour de France 2024 gaat de boeken in als die van Biniam Girmay. De 24-jarige Eritreeër won donderdag zijn derde etappe in deze editie en maakt van klein duimpje Intermarché-Wanty een grote speler. Maar weer ging de sprint niet onopgemerkt voorbij. Luister mee in de WielerFlits Update! Dolle feestvreugde bij de Waalse formatie, waar een lachende Mike Teunissen zich afvraagt of er wel genoeg champagne is na de twee eerdere ritzeges. Performance manager Aike Visbeek verzekerde dat dit wel het geval was en legde voor onze camera uit waarom ze vanuit tactisch oogpunt in het begin van de koers de wedstrijd zo hard hebben gemaakt voor de vluchters. Ook Teunissen zag dat het haar vruchten afwierp en zodoende mogen beide Nederlanders met de Waalse ploeg én Greeniam Girmay aan de bubbels. Want dat puntenklassement is nu toch wel écht binnen handbereik. Of had Wout van Aert toch gewonnen als hij vrijuit kon sprinten? Arnaud Démare blokte hem en ook Mark Cavendish deed zaken in de sprint die de schoonheidsprijs niet verdienen. Maar helpt declasseren daar wel tegen? Beide mannen wonnen sowieso niet en in de strijd om groen doen ze niet mee. Vrijdag volgt een nieuwe sprint naar Pau, al is de finale – met de Pyreneeën in zicht – best lastig. Het kan ook zo maar zijn dat er vluchters wegblijven, want onder andere Intermarché-Wanty is daar wel bij gebaat. Als aanvallers het halen, snoepen die immers een sloot punten weg voor de concurrenten van Biniam Girmay. Biniam Girmay had a mixed season in 2023, winning a stage of the Tour de Suisse but crashing on his birthday at the Tour of Flanders and the Tour de France he came close to win a stage on a number of occasions. Adjusted to the pressure he now has his sights on the Classics and Tour de France again with another year and a stronger Girmay it could be his year once again.

Intermarché–Circus–Wanty did not have the same success as in 2022 but they had some decent performances for Rui Costa who won a stage at the Vuelta Espana and the Japan Cup in his final race for the team. There were big ambitions for Biniam Girmay in 2023 but he had bad luck crashing at Tour of Flanders, however bouncing back at the Tour de Suisse to win a stage in front of Wout van Aert and at the Tour de France he was in the pointy end of several stages but just a bit unlucky not to win a stage. Nevertheless with another year he will be stronger than ever.    

Jasper Philipsen took his third Tour de France stage of this year's edition however there were some controversial moments in the final moments as he seemed to block Biniam Girmay whilst they were battling for the wheel of Mark Cavendish. Should Jasper Philipsen be relegated or was it a sprinting incident?

Biniam Girmay stands on the brink of history as the first black African rider to win a stage of cycling's biggest race: the Tour de France. After a hard upbringing as one of six children in the Eritrean capital Asmara, he has become one of the most talented riders from the continent in the sport's history. More than a year into Ethiopia's brutal civil war, the country stands on the brink. The conflict has seen widespread violence against civilians and left millions at urgent risk of starvation. But a recent lull in the fighting has been hailed as an “opportunity for peace.” In this episode, New Lines' Faisal Al Yafai asks what comes next.
