Live from the wild, eclectic, art-riddled halls of Stitch and Staple at the illustrious 21C hotel, we're diving into the deep blue—conceptually, at least—with this episode. We chat with the incredibly thoughtful Dawit L. Petros and Art History powerhouse Onur Öztürk about their work in the exhibition Prospetto a Mare at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP). What's it about? Well, think: migration, colonial histories, and the ever-shifting geopolitical sea. No big deal, right? Petros' breathtaking, multi-layered visual narratives bring the past and present of migration into view, while Öztürk's sharp, historically-grounded insights connect the dots across time and space. Together, they turn the exhibition into a thought-provoking journey across borders—geographical, historical, and artistic. Also, we recorded this episode at 21C's luxurious digs, so enjoy the ambiance of clinking glasses and gallery buzz in the background. Join us as we unpack how art and history collide in one of the most important conversations about displacement and identity today. Links & Mentions: Dawit L. In this episode of Living Decoloniality, we sit down with Dawit Taddele Dessie. Dawit considers himself a person who works to promote sustainable change. Currently, his interest is mainly focused on the intersection between technology and development. Dawit shares insights on how he is engaging in reshaping philanthropy in East Africa. We'll dive into his work at Project Tech for Development, the role of tech-enabled solutions in nonprofit work, and his vision for decolonizing philanthropy through long-term sustainability, data-driven insights, and strategic partnerships. He emphasizes that true decolonization must begin with a shift in mindset, transforming the way we think before we can reshape systems and institutionsSources: 3 ways to decolonize philanthropy right now, Geoffrey Thige, Jailan AdlyFunders must reckon with the true motivations of philanthropy if they want to decolonise, Laura Somoggi and Shivani Guptahttps://www.wildeganzen.org/https://kcdf.or.ke/Opinion: To truly walk the talk is to decolonize philanthropyDawit Taddele Dessie is a seasoned changemaker with over 15 years of experience driving transformative impact across diverse sectors. Currently, he is at the forefront of integrating technology into development through his role at Project Tech for Development, where he builds scalable and sustainable solutions, strengthens nonprofit tech capacity, and leverages open-source technology for the public good. Simultaneously, he serves as a strategic advisor to the East Africa Philanthropy Network, architecting an integrated ecosystem centered around three key pillars:Endowment/Pool Fund: Fostering long-term organizational sustainability through strategic fundraising and partnerships.Tech-Enabled Data Mapping Platform: Creating a comprehensive data-driven landscape of the East African philanthropic ecosystem.Technology Integration and Custom Tech Products: Empowering network members with innovative technology solutions to maximize impact.A skilled collaborator, Dawit excels at building bridges between diverse stakeholders to drive systemic change. With a keen ability to identify opportunities and translate vision into action. Having a conversation about the artworks and important issues such as climate change is everywhere in the globe. It's important for us also in the Horn of Africa region to talk about it through art, not politics necessarily. I feel like it opens a little bit of a door, a little bit more than the politics.Dawit Seto is an Ethiopian performing artist specializing in contemporary dance and choreography who is currently based in Switzerland and whose artistic work intricately weaves together the stories of migrant histories from East Africa and engages in vigorous advocacy for climate justice in all of his artistic pursuits. And you'll hear him talk with passion about the role of art in his life and for his communities. Through his dedication to storytelling via movement, Dawit transcends physical borders, amalgamating diverse influences and social consciousness into his creations, rendering them both captivating and socially impactful. And I experienced this when I saw his videos. Immersing in the intricate exploration of movement language within Ethiopia's vibrant traditional dance heritage, Dawit infuses his artistic works with an authentic cultural richness that resonates with global audiences. It certainly resonated with me when I first heard Dawit at a creative climate leadership alumni meeting on February 18th, 2024 where he spoke about the impact of climate change in eastern Africa.I spoke with Dawit on June 12th, 2024 by Zoom. Here's an excerpt from our conversation that positions why he participates in meeting like the creative climate network: I have witnessed the disaster of what climate change can do. I see it in my age and it was also in my grandfather's age. For me, whenever international seminars or meetings are happening to talk about a future, it just makes me scared. And because I saw it in my age. It was not for future for me, climate. Climate was about yesterday. It was about today. Because of that I want to be a part of any conversation as much as I can handle because of resources. We are working on mobilizing and having a conversation and witnessing the disaster that we face. Our conversation helped me understand the impact of the climate crisis in the Horn of Africa and how artists, such as Dawit, are engaging with these issues through artistic creation and cultural leadership. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). מי אני Qui suis-je ? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- מי אני Who am I? What is my own Jewish identity? What is Jewish education really about? Ultimately, the goal of Jewish education, whether it's Jewish Day School, Camp, Synagogue, or youth groups - or even the home - is to help our youth answer that very question - מי אני - who am I? What is my Jewish identity? Who is the Jewish person I aspire to be? That's where this podcast comes in. As part of a project funded by the Legacy Heritage Fund, Herzliah students from Secondary 3 were challenged to think deeply about their own conceptions of Jewish identity. Students interviewed local Jewish community members about their own identity and ultimately interviewed each other - all surrounding the question of finding and defining Jewish identity. This episode features an interview between students Liel Dawit and Tali Warshawsky, and Zakay Levy and Gabriel Fhima. We hope you enjoy!

Race isn't derogatory, it's descriptive, unless the fascists get to promote the narrative. In this episode Michaela and Dawit talk candidly about the notion of race as derogatory and the burial of the historic truth of Ethiopia as a nation. Prepare to be triggered as they scrape the surface on topics like human rights and medical testing the slave trade and how it originated (hint they intelligently bartered). Deacon Dawit Muluneh is the author of Hopeless Romantic: The Untold History of Ethiopia, I Need Answers and is a Ph.D. student of Ethiopian and Arabic Studies. He grew up in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Chuch and at age seven, his family immigrated to the US from Ethiopia. Muluneh graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon completing his education at Virginia Tech, he worked at a patent and trademark office for three years. At age 27 he sold his house and car and traveled to a monastery in Ethiopia - Debris Libanos - to learn the traditional teachings of the church. Afterward, he was ordained a deacon in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. After a year and a half, Muluneh returned to the States to join a graduate program at the Catholic University of America, where he currently studies Ethiopian and Arabic Studies. He has been trained in Ge'ez, Arabic, Coptic, and Greek, and is currently preparing to take his Ph.D. comprehension exams. He lives in Washington, DC. Over the weekend, Saturday July 10, I had the opportunity to chat with Dawit Abraham, the Founder and CEO of Qene Games. He was the youngest guest on the show. He is a developer of the game called Kukulu, first of its kind in Ethiopia. His company is also know for a game called Gebeta, which is based on Ethiopian local game played for centuries on hole engraved flat stones/wood. He came from Electrical Engineering background. Dawit wasn't limited by his classroom activities rather he pushed himself to learn to code and develop apps/games. He was able to start developing his famous game - Kukulu while attending his class. He was fortunate to utilize resources from Icoglabs and Gebeya. His stay at both companies also helped him to transform his career in to becoming a successful Game Developer and founder of Qene Games. Dawit's success story wasn't an easy one, he shared us the challenges Qene Games faced. Thank you Dawit for sharing us your journey and respond to audience's question. We have recorded the session, please have a listen on our podcast.

While Ethiopia had thrived under Zara Yaqob, it had dark days ahead. Ethiopia, always surrounded by hostile nations, would have to fight for its life as their neighbors grew stronger. Its very existence hung in the balance. But thanks to some new allies, and two kings who would spend their lives defending their nation and the church, Ethiopia, and the Ethiopian church, were saved from total annihilation.

We talk about the very similarly named Live albums from 1964 and 1973, but just be prepared for things to get weird this episode. We don't really do a track by track, and PJ and Dawit genuinely upset Peter. Plus we are now the most diverse Beach Boys Podcast on the internet, so we've got that going for us,
