Diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's are devastating neurological conditions that typically occur at old age and lead to systematic dementia and debilitating symptoms. The underlying mechanisms of these diseases are poorly understood. Yet, a striking feature of these conditions is the characteristic pattern of invasion throughout the brain, leading to well-codified disease stages associated with various cognitive deficits and pathologies. This lecture shows how mathematical modelling can be used to predict dementia's progression by unravelling some of its universal features. This lecture was recorded by Alain Goriely on 13th May 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Alain is Gresham Professor of Geometry. He is currently the Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2022.The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/troubled-brain-ageing-and-dementiaGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. From Olympic training to injury prevention, Luxembourg hosts the world's brightest minds to prove why maths might just be sport's secret superpower. After a round-up of mid-week news with Sasha Kehoe, my guests this week are: - Prof. Christophe Ley – Main organiser of MathSport International; leads the Modelling, Interdisciplinary Research, Data Science, Applied Mathematics and Statistics group at the University of Luxembourg. - Prof. Romain Seil – World-renowned orthopaedic knee surgeon, IOC advisor, Director of the Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal Diseases Division at Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg; co-founder of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, knee Surgery and Arthroscopy - ESSKA's Pediatric ACL registry and previous President of ESSKA, amongst many other organisations. - Prof. Thorben Hülsdünker – Professor in Performance Neuroscience and Sport Neurophysiology, Head of the Neurophysiology and Motor Control Research Area at LUNEX. - Alwin de Prins – Former Olympian and Managing Director at the Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sports (LIHPS) - Katarzyna Szczerba – PhD student with Prof. Ley, using machine learning with medical data to best use this data for injury prevention, and much more. This week on The Lisa Burke Show, we dive deep into a blend of brain and brawn as Luxembourg hosts the 11th International MathSport Conference. While it may sound niche, what's unfolding here could revolutionise how athletes train, recover—and even avoid career-ending injuries. And not just athletes as many injuries are caused by people unprepared for activities they undertake once a year, such as skiing. Held from June 4–6 in the Coque and LUNEX University, the conference unites elite athletes, data scientists, surgeons and policymakers to explore how mathematics, data science and AI are transforming global sport. A Surgeon's Warning Professor Romain Seil, Luxembourg's globally celebrated knee specialist, put it bluntly: "If I could ban two sports for injury prevention, it would be football and alpine skiing." His data from years in the operating room is compelling. ACL injuries are devastating, often leading to early joint replacements. Professor Seil hopes we can increasingly pool real data to reform training, and embed prevention strategies from grass-roots to Olympic levels. “Coaches often don't realise the long-term damage until multiple players are injured. Data is how we change that.” Brains Behind the Brawn Professor Thorben Hülsdünker of LUNEX added another dimension with a focus on the connection of our body with our brain. He studies the neurophysiology of elite performance, from how athletes see and react, and how training can rewire the brain. “The brain is the next frontier of sports training,” he said. “Understanding it will define the next generation of champions.” Prof Hülsdünker knows that the best training targets both muscles and minds, combining sport science with neuroscience. AI Gets Personal PhD student AI-enhanced Cox Model blends machine learning with statistical models to predict runner injuries, and other medical issues, before they happen. “We're building tools that doctors and coaches can understand: simple, interpretable, but powerful enough to prevent injury.” Her AI-enhanced Cox Model is one of the standout presentations at MathSport 2025. From Pool to Policy Alwin de Prins, a three-time Olympic swimmer and now Director of LIHPS, reflects on what's changed since his competitive days: “I never had this level of support as an athlete. Now, our goal is to optimise not just performance, but well-being and life after sport.” His mission includes dual career planning, athlete health, and placing Luxembourg firmly on the map as a sporting—and scientific—nation. Why Luxembourg? Why Now? Professor Christophe Ley, the heart of this year's conference, pulled it all together: “Sport is full of data. We want to extract meaning from it—not just for medals, but for health, safety, and strategy.” With keynote talks ranging from sports analytics to injury prevention and economics, MathSport 2025 puts Luxembourg at the centre of a growing global movement: data-driven sport. https://www.linkedin.com/in/alwindeprins/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophe-ley-b71607166/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/romain-seil-9952172a/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/thorbenhuelsduenker/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/katarzyna-szczerba-4402b9192/ Get in touch Tune in to The Lisa Burke Show on Today Radio Saturdays at 11am, Sundays at noon, and Tuesdays at 11am. The fidelity and reliability of climate models has been limited by computing capabilities. These limitations lead to inaccurate representations of key processes such as convection, cloud, or mixing or restrict the ensemble size of climate predictions. Therefore, these issues are a significant hurdle in enhancing climate simulations and their predictions. Here, I will discuss a new generation of climate models with AI representations of unresolved ocean physics, learned from high-fidelity simulations, and their impact on reducing biases in climate simulations. The simulations are performed with operational ocean model components. I will further demonstrate the potential of AI to accelerate climate predictions and increase their reliability through the generation of fully AI-driven emulators, which can reproduce decades of climate model output in seconds with high accuracy.Laure ZannaProfessor Zanna is a climate physicist in the Department of Mathematics at the Courant Institute, and the Center for Data Science, NYU. She holds the Joseph B. Keller and Herbert B. Keller Professorship in Applied Mathematics. Her research focuses on understanding, simulating and predicting the role of the ocean in climate on local and global scales. She combines theory, numerical simulations, statistics, and machine learning to tackle a wide range of problems in fluid dynamics and climate, including turbulence, multiscale modeling, ocean heat and carbon uptake, and sea level rise. Since 2020, she is leading M²LInES, an international collaboration sponsored by Schmidt Sciences dedicated to improving climate models using scientific machine learning. In 2020, Prof Zanna received the Nicholas P. Fofonoff Award from the American Meteorological Society "for exceptional creativity in the development and application of new concepts in ocean and climate dynamics", and was the 2022 WHOI Geophysical Fluid Dynamics principal lecturer.
This week we present two stories from people who stood up against a system eager to tear them down. Part 1: After a car crash alters Emily Winn's life forever, she must relive the trauma when she testifies in a deposition. Part 2: Geneticist C. Brandon Ogbunu contemplates the role race has played in his academic career after he is confronted by the police. Dr. Emily Winn-Nuñez is a data scientist based in Brooklyn, NY where she lives with her husband and adorable pug. She received her AB in mathematics from the College of the Holy Cross, spent a year in the Visiting Students Programme at St. Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford, and earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. She's still a Sox fan, still ergs at the gym, and still enjoys comedy - but she'll also happily discuss the New York Liberty or the Love Island multiverse. C. Brandon Ogbunu is a Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, and an Assistant Professor at Yale University. His research focuses on evolutionary genetics and the ecology of disease. A New York City native, Brandon enjoys film, hip-hop, jazz and science fiction. He's an ex-very mediocre light heavy weight boxer, and slightly less mediocre experimental virologist. He has higher hopes for humanity than he does the New York Knicks. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Despite its quiet appearance, the brain is the seat of complicated wave dynamics. Indeed, cognitive processes are carried out through communications between neurons, leading to synchronisation and oscillations at different frequencies that can be recorded. Together, these oscillations also create waves that propagate through different regions. Apart from this electrical activity, the brain is also the siege of slow chemical waves that can cause migraine and mechanical waves arising from trauma. In this lecture, we will study the influence of all these waves on brain function. This lecture was recorded by Alain Goriely on 18th March 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Alain is Gresham Professor of Geometry. He is currently the Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2022.The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/turbulent-brain-rhythms-and-wavesGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. The UK government has recently pledged to put around £14 billion into supporting the development of artificial intelligence over the next few years. But because AI comes with perils as well as promises, careful policy decision are going to be crucial. In order to make such decision in an informed way, politicians need to interact with the mathematicians and scientist who develop AI. In this episode of Maths on the Move we talk to mathematician Chris Budd who recently went to Parliament for something called Evidence Week, where he and other AI researchers talked with MPs and Peers from the House of Lords. Chris tells us about the discussions he had with politicians — about the worrying issue of bias in AI, its promising applications, for example in the medical arena, and also about the fact that AI is built on mathematics. A strong maths education, starting at primary school, is therefore essential if we're going to make the best of AI in the future. Chris is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bath, co-lead of the research project Maths4DL, and Director of Knowledge Exchange for the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation. He attended Evidence week with a team of researchers which included Yolanne Lee, a Maths4DL PhD student who recently featured in another Maths on the Move episode. Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/bKMV8i9Mq40The brain is mostly organised in small modular regions connected to each other. Typically, each region performs different cognitive tasks, from image processing to language. This organisation leads us to model the brain as a network, the ‘brain connectome'. This fundamental view of the brain has become a central paradigm for neurosciences linking topological properties of networks to brain functions. This lecture presents ideas from graph theory to study this network and understand the way that the brain learns and operates. This lecture was recorded by Alain Goriely on 4th February 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Alain is Gresham Professor of Geometry. He is currently the Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2022.The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/connected-brainGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. In today's polarized society, the role of education leaders has never been more critical. As the landscape of communities becomes increasingly divided, the challenge of fostering unity within schools and districts grows more complex. Education leaders are not just administrators; they are role models, guiding students, staff, and families toward a shared vision of collaboration and respect. Schools are microcosms of society, reflecting the diversity and challenges of the larger world. Education leaders play a pivotal role in creating environments where students feel valued, staff feel supported, and communities feel heard. This responsibility goes beyond managing resources or enforcing policies—it's about inspiring trust, building bridges, and fostering a culture of inclusion. Leading in a polarized society is no small task, but the rewards are profound. By prioritizing unity and modeling inclusive leadership, education leaders can create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the walls of their schools. Together, we can transform division into understanding and build communities where every individual feels empowered to contribute. Are you ready to take the next step in fostering unity within your educational community? Takeaways: Promoting Active Listening: Encourage open dialogue where all voices are heard, ensuring that diverse perspectives are respected and valued. Leading by Example: Demonstrate behaviors that reflect empathy, respect, and a commitment to unity, setting a tone for others to follow. Building Collaborative Relationships: Strengthen partnerships with families, community members, and local organizations to foster a sense of shared responsibility and purpose. Focusing on Shared Goals: Highlight common aspirations, such as student success and well-being, to bring stakeholders together despite differing viewpoints. About Erin Kane: Prior to serving as Superintendent, guest speaker Erin Kane was serving as the Executive Director of Schools for American Academy, a charter public school in the Douglas County School District that serves almost 3,000 students across three campuses in preschool through eighth grade. Ms. Kane led the effort to found American Academy back in 2004. Under her leadership, American Academy expanded to include additional campuses and a preschool program. In 2016, she led the Douglas County School District as the Interim Superintendent. Ms. Kane returned to the leadership role at American Academy in the fall of 2018. Under her leadership, the district's academic scores increased, employee morale improved, turnover decreased and the annual spending deficit was eliminated. Prior to joining American Academy, Ms. Kane spent nearly a decade in the high technology industry in project development, project management, education, consulting and practice management. She holds a Master's degree in Public Administration, along with an engineering degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, from the University of Colorado. Before, earning a verification on social media, you had to be a celebrity, a politician or someone in the public eye such as a journalist, however, since Elon Musk's introduced verification for sale on X, it's now easier than ever to buy credibility that was once hard earned. This creates an issue where users can share divisive content online with unearned credibility to unsuspecting readers. As the general election approaches where parties and users alike share content in the attempt to win votes and spread ideologies, new research “Echo Chamber Formation Sharpened by Priority Users” from Munster Technological University suggests that X's verification model can intensify the polarisation on people's opinions and create echo chambers online. One of the Co-Author's of the research is Kleber Andrade and I spoke to him. Kleber talks about his background, verification on social media, the research he Co-Authored, the recent American election, the upcoming Irish election, AI ,and more. More about Kleber Andrade: Kleber recently started as an Assistant Lecturer at Munster Technological University, Ireland. Previously, he was a researcher at the CENTAI Institute in Turin, Italy. He completed a PhD in Applied Mathematics supervised by Prof. James Gleeson, at the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) of the University of Limerick, Ireland. His research interests are in the space of online social networks, information diffusion and nonlinear dynamics.

Turbocharged by the internet and mobile technology, legalized gambling has exploded across the globe, leaving behind ruined lives, broken families and financial hardships, and should now be classified as a major public health concern. A four-year study by a public health commission on gambling convened by The Lancet, the respected British journal of medicine, found that net global losses by gamblers could exceed $700 billion by the year 2028, and that 80% of countries now allow some form of legal gambling. But HKS Professor Malcolm Sparrow, a leading scholar on regulating societal harms, says that in reality the percentage of countries where gambling is practiced is closer to 100% because internet- and mobile-based gambling—often using cryptocurrencies—can easily circumvent borders. Among the commission's more concerning findings is that a significant portion of virtual gamblers are teenagers, and that more than 1 in 4 teens are at risk of becoming compulsive or problem gamblers. Sparrow tells PolicyCast host Ralph Ranalli that the harms are also widespread, since the suffering from each problem gambler also affects on average six to eight people around them—ranging from spouses to relatives to friends to employers and co-workers. Sparrow says the commission has identified a number of policy solutions to mitigate the growing fallout from gambling expansion, ranging from limiting the speed and intensity of virtual gambling products to prohibiting gambling with credit cards and banning gaming companies from offering loans. Policy Recommendations from The Lancet Public Health Commission on Gambling:Push governments to define gambling as primarily a public health issue, and prioritize health and wellbeing over economic gains when crafting gambling policies.Adopt effective regulation in all countries—regardless of whether or not they have legalized gambling—including limiting promotion and marketing, providing accessible support for betting-related harms, and denormalizing gambling through public awareness campaigns.Create independent regulators in jurisdictions where gambling is legal to enforce protections including safeguards for young people, consumer protections, and mandatory limits on gambling activities.Shield development of gambling policies, research, and treatment from industry influence through a shift to independent funding sources. At the international level, require UN entities and intergovernmental organizations to address gambling harms as part of broader health and wellbeing strategies.Create an international alliance of stakeholders to lead advocacy, research, and collaboration on gambling-related issues.Adopt a resolution recognizing the public health impacts of gambling at the World Health Assembly.Episode Notes:Malcolm K. Sparrow is professor of the practice of public management at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is faculty chair of the school's executive education program on strategic management of regulatory and enforcement agencies. He is the offer of several books, including “The Regulatory Craft: Controlling Risks, Solving Problems, and Managing Compliance,” and “License to Steal: How Fraud Bleeds America's Health Care System.” An expert in regulatory management, his research interests include regulatory and enforcement strategy, fraud control, corruption control, and operational risk management. Before coming to HKS, he served 10 years with the British Police Service, where he rose to the rank of detective chief inspector and conducted internal affairs investigations, commanded a tactical firearms unit, and gained extensive experience with criminal investigation. A mathematician and patent-holding inventor in the area of computerized fingerprint analysis, he earned an MA in mathematics from Cambridge University, an MPA from the Kennedy School, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Kent.Ralph Ranalli of the HKS Office of Communications and Public Affairs is the host, producer, and editor of HKS PolicyCast. Underground Leviathan: Corporate Sovereignty and Mining in the Americas (U Nevada Press, 2024) explores the emergence, dynamics, and lasting impacts of a mining firm, the United States Company. Through its exercise of sovereign power across the borders of North America in the early twentieth century, the transnational US Company shaped the business, environmental, political, and scientific landscape. Between its initial incorporation in Maine in 1906 and its final demise in the 1980s, the mining company held properties in Utah, Colorado, California, Nevada, Alaska, Mexico, and Canada. The firm was a prototypical management-ruled corporation, which strategically planned and manipulated the technological, production, economic, urban, environmental, political, and cultural activities wherever it operated, all while shaping social actors internationally, including managers, engineers, workers, neighbours, and farmers. In this study, he aims to unearth the hidden relationships between communities that transcend national states. Throughout the book, the author points out how modern corporations are run by a kaleidoscope of interests and groups, and many of the issues they face are relevant today. Israel García Solares was born and raised in the Xochimilco neighbourhood of Mexico City. I studied for an undergraduate and master's in economics at Mexico's National University (UNAM) and a PhD in History at El Colegio de México. García Solares is currently an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems at UNAM, and his research focuses on the global history of technological actors in the 20th century. Venture Unlocked: The playbook for venture capital managers.
Follow me @samirkaji for my thoughts on the venture market, with a focus on the continued evolution of the VC landscape. This week we welcome the three co-founders of Saga Ventures: Ben Braverman, Thomson Nguyen, and Max Altman. Saga Ventures is a seed-stage investment firm that recently closed its first fund of $125M.The conversation dives into their experiences in raising their first fund, building a team, and navigating a competitive seed-stage market. The co-founders bring unique skill sets from their previous roles in operating and investing, and this episode sheds light on how they strategically combine those skills to differentiate themselves from other firms.About Ben BravermanBen Braverman is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Saga Ventures, a $125M venture capital fund he co-launched in March 2024 alongside Max Altman and Thomson Nguyen. At Saga, Ben focuses on early-stage investments, working with pre-seed and seed-stage companies across various sectors. His background in scaling companies' go-to-market strategies provides valuable insight into helping startups grow efficiently and sustainably. Before founding Saga Ventures, Ben spent nearly nine years at Flexport, a major player in the logistics space. Starting as Chief Revenue Officer in 2014, he was instrumental in building and scaling Flexport's global sales and go-to-market teams. Later, as Chief Customer Officer, Ben oversaw customer relationships and corporate development, ensuring the company's growth aligned with customer needs. His final role at Flexport saw him leading Flexport Ventures and Corporate Development, where he focused on the company's strategic investments.Earlier in his career, Ben held growth and sales leadership positions at startups like URX, which was acquired by Pinterest, and Heyzap, acquired by RNTS Media. He holds a degree from Vassar College and has spent his career helping innovative companies grow through a hands-on approach to business development and customer engagement.About Thomson NguyenThomson Nguyen is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Saga Ventures, where he has been since March 2024. Before that, he was an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kleiner Perkins and the Head of Capital Data Science at Square, where he managed the data science team responsible for critical business areas like default risk, marketing optimization, and product innovation. His career in fintech is rooted in his work at Framed Data, a startup he founded and later sold to Square.Thomson started his career as a data scientist at tech companies like Lookout and Causes, where he applied his expertise to user segmentation and predictive analytics. He also has a longstanding academic affiliation with New York University's Courant Institute, where he continues to contribute to research in machine learning and cybersecurity. Thomson holds degrees in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.About Max AltmanMax Altman is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Saga Ventures, a venture capital fund he helped establish in March 2024. Max focuses on investing in pre-seed and seed-stage companies, working closely with his co-founders to identify and support high-potential startups. His experience as both an investor and operator allows him to bridge the gap between capital and company-building.Before co-founding Saga Ventures, Max was a Partner at Alt Capital from 2021 to 2024, where he invested in early-stage companies. Prior to that, he held a similar role at Apollo Projects, another investment firm focused on startups. His career as an investor began at Hydrazine Capital, where he worked from 2016 to 2019. During his time there, Max honed his skills in evaluating high-growth tech companies and building meaningful relationships with founders.Earlier in his career, Max gained operating experience at Zenefits, where he worked in product management, and at Allston Trading as a trader. As wind and solar become ubiquitous, the value of hydropower goes up. Hydropower is becoming the ultimate clean energy, as it is flexible and easily dispatchable.Hydropower is concentrated in certain geographies (China, Brazil, Canada) and is almost entirely developed by State-Owned Utilities that can stomach and support the very long construction time. Bost costs and value should be measured in decades, not in years.Unfortunately, Climate Change is impacting the reliability of hydro; we have recently witnessed a succession of dry years and wet years, which have created stresses in the American West, Brazil and China… So, how to make the best of it? How to optimize this valuable resource? That is the life's mission of Janice Goodenough, CEO of HYDROGRID. With a master's degree in Applied Mathematics and over 15 years of experience in the hydropower sector, Janice Goodenough is a dedicated advocate for leveraging the complete potential of hydropower amidst the evolving energy landscape. HYDROGRID Insight is an integrated water management & production planning platform for proactive hydro teams, providing comprehensive, predictive capabilities such as plant monitoring, predictive production planning, optimal trading, as well as constraint and maintenance management under a single hood.We love hydro, but they need to stop snoozing. With the rapid growth of new evidence from astronomy, space science and biology that supports the theory of life as a cosmic rather than terrestrial phenomenon, this book discusses a set of crucial data and pictures showing that life is still arriving at our planet. Although it could spark controversy among the most hardened sceptics this book will have an important role in shaping future science in this area.We are led to believe that modern science is free of all forms of irrational prejudice that plagued science over the centuries. In this book we document an instance when this is far from true in relation to the most fundamental aspects of biology — the question of the origin of life and its cosmic provenance. From the early 1980's evidence in favour of the theory of cosmic life and a version of panspermia, developed by Fred Hoyle and CW has grown to the point that its continued marginalisation, or even outright rejection, is a cause for serious concern. We present here the story of panspermia in which we ourselves have been directly involved…Milton Wainwright, BSc, PhD, FRAS was born in 1950 in the mining village of Fitzwilliam in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He obtained his BSc and PhD from Nottingham University, and after a short period as a National Research Council of Canada Research Fellow became lecturer in Environmental Microbiology at the University of Sheffield. Here, he taught and researched for forty-two years in the Departments of Microbiology and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. He is an Honorary Professor at the Universities of Cardiff and Buckingham, UK, the University of Ruhuna, Sri, Lanka, and the Slavic University of North Macedonia; he is also a Visiting Professor of King Saud University, Riyadh, and one of the few biologists to be made a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He has published widely on the history of science, particularly on the germ theory, the history of antibiotics (notably penicillin) and alternative accounts of the history of natural selection and evolution. Nalin Chandra Wickramasinghe, MBE, BSc (Ceylon), MA, PhD, ScD (Cantab), Hon DSc (Sri Lanka, Ruhuna), Hon DLitt (Tokyo, Soka), FRAS, FRSA was born in 1939 in Sri Lanka.
